Torii Hunter will make $12 million this year, and some people probably bristle when he says anything about free agency as he did yesterday. But let me say this: Hunter is simply an honest guy, answering reporters’ questions.

I wrote a story on him earlier this month that talked about how Hunter’s wealth has helped raise an entire family out of poverty. Interesting epilogue: Before coming to Fort Myers, Hunter made one more trip back to Pine Bluff, Ark., to visit his mother. He walked into Indiana Street Elementary School, where she still teaches second grade, and paid an unannounced visit to all the classrooms.

Imagine when little Tommy went home from Indiana Street that day. His mother asks: “Anything unusual happen in school today?”

“Nah, just a visit from the teacher’s son.”
