I know the Cleveland Indians are the trendy pick to win the AL Central and possibly even the World Series this year. But this is why I can’t see it. A story in today’s Cleveland Plain Dealer talks about Manager Eric Wedge’s frustration with his team’s infield play.
Cleveland’s biggest problem last year was its bullpen. But the defense was awful, too. It seemed like the Indians kicked away several games defensively against the Twins, with shortstop Johnny Peralta a real disappointment. Victor Martinez is not a good defensive catcher at all. And third baseman Andy Marte’s bat made him a big-name prospect, but his glove is definitely suspect.
Interesting to note from this story that former Twin Luis Rivas is the lone utility infield candidate who has been impressive.
