Get ready for Red Wings fever

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

RochRedWing.jpgYou’re furious. We can tell. The Twins will head north this week with Johan Santana, Boof Bonser and three guys who combined to go 26-36 last year. But something struck me yesterday, as I was watching Joe Mauer play a scrimmage for Class AAA Rochester: That Rochester team is going to be phenomenal.

No disrespect to Mr. Santana, but scouts have said that Rochester’s rotation could be better — or, at least more promising — than Minnesota’s. Rochester opens its season April 6 against Ottawa, and as beat writers, we’ll be following the action at http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/ every single night.

The Red Wings rotation will include Matt Garza, Glen Perkins, Kevin Slowey, Scott Baker. The lineup will have speedsters Denard Span and Alexi Casilla at the top. It appears the trimmed down Matt Moses will be playing third. Garrett Jones will be there, honing his power stroke. Assuming he’s one of the last cuts of the spring, Triple-A veteran Josh Rabe will be back to anchor the lineup. And Matthew LeCroy will be on the squad, offering a Crash Davis presence.

I remember the disappointment Jason Bartlett felt last year when the Twins sent him to Rochester at the end of spring training. On getaway day, that Rochester team pummelled the Twins 15-3, with Bartlett going 4-for-5 with a home run and three runs scored. That sent a message for the entire season. The Twins won the AL Central, and Rochester played for the International League championship, losing the fifth and deciding game to Detroit’s Toledo affiliate.

By season’s end, several members of that Rochester team became integral pieces for the Twins during their 71-33 finish: Bartlett, Jason Tyner, Dennys Reyes, Rabe, etc. I spoke to a member of last year’s Rochester squad recently, and he playfully noted how the Twins/Rochester game isn’t on this year’s schedule. But those packing their bags this week, shouldn’t fret. Those of us who follow the Twins, will be following every Red Wings game.

Garza sent to minors, rotation set

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

The Twins reassigned Matt Garza to Class AAA Rochester today, leaving their starting rotation set. It’ll be Johan Santana and some order of Boof Bonser, Ramon Ortiz, Sidney Ponson and Carlos Silva.

We’ll have much more for early editions, but with regard to Garza, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said, “We’ve been thinking about it over and over again, a long time here, obviously trying to make a decision that’s right for this young man and our ballclub, and we decided that he moved really quick through the organization last year. We all know he’s got a great fastball. He needs to locate his pitches, and throw them over a little bit more. We’re going to give him a little more time here. We know where he’s at. If we need him we can go get him.”

What stress? Mauer can still hit

Wednesday, March 28th, 2007

Joe Mauer put on a show this morning in a minor-league scrimmage between Class AAA Rochester and Class AA New Britain. He’d been out a week with a stress reaction in his left fibula, remember. But facing Anthony Swarzak, one of the Twins’ younger pitching prospects, Mauer smashed a run-scoring double in his first at-bat, and then crushed a home run to center field.

Mauer finished 2-for-3 after grounding out to first in his final at-bat. He also caught Glen Perkins for three innings, looking as smooth as ever behind the plate. Afterward, Mauer said his leg felt fine. His only concern seemed to be getting his entire body back into playing shape after missing the week. The plan is to have him play in another minor-league game tomorrow in Fort Myers, and he’ll likely return to the Twins lineup by the weekend. “I should be fine heading into the season,” Mauer said.

Jeter takes MVP vote in stride

Tuesday, March 27th, 2007

It’s Twins/Yankees today in Fort Myers, and you can catch the game on ESPN at 12:05 p.m. (Central). With that in mind, here’s a story from Newsday on Derek Jeter’s thoughts about losing last year’s MVP award to Justin Morneau. Yankees fans might have been outraged, but Jeter handled it with class. “It was disappointing,” he told Newsday, “but I didn’t really lose too much sleep over it.” But the Yankees’ first-round exit from last year’s playoffs? That was a different story.
