JohanSI.jpgThe crowd was on its feet at the Metrodome. Carlos Silva got the final out at 9:20 p.m. (a deadline writer’s dream, so La Velle thanks him.) Silva, a proud new papa, twirled his second career shutout. The other came Aug. 3, 2004. Home runs tonight by Justin Morneau (No. 18), Torii Hunter (No. 14), and Lew Ford (No. 1).

FYI — Johan is on this week’s cover of SI for Kids, according to an e-mail we received from the publicist. He pitches Thursday, so watch for the SI for Kids cover jinx, if there is such a thing. Maybe it’s a junior jinx.

A-Rod hit his 25th HR tonight. Cleveland was winning, but Milwaukee came back to defeat Detroit.

And anyone remember, this game? I just wrote a retrospective of the Jack Morris/John Smoltz battle in Game 7 of the 1991 World Series. Until tonight, Morris and Smoltz hadn’t spoken to each other since. Had a lot of fun talking to people for the story, especially Smoltz. What a classy guy.
