In-game update: Twins make a deal

Sunday, June 24th, 2007

If you’re having a hard time recognizing today’s lineup, believe me, it could have looked stranger. Gardy just said he thought about putting Joe Mauer at first base. It would have been a one-time thing, just to get his bat in the lineup for the final game of interleague play. But Mauer came out after seven innings last night and said he wanted to catch again today. … Then, Luis Castillo came to the clubhouse saying his leg was sore. Twins are used to this now. Castillo really struggles to play day games after night games. … The Justin Morneau update was a little more disconcerting this morning. He’s going to have more tests late this afternoon and likely won’t take the team flight. Gardenhire said the doctors are reluctant to let Morneau fly with his bruised right lung. The chest X-Ray he’s having today is also important. Though Friday night’s X-Ray showed no broken bones those things sometimes show up later. I hope to have an update for you on Morneau later today, so stay tuned.

Update: Hey, the Twins just made a trade! OK, not a big one. The Washington Nationals sent them minor-league outfielder Darnell McDonald for the rights to keep RHP Levale Speigner, whom they chose in the Rule 5 draft. The Nationals had to keep Speigner on their major league roster or offer him back to the Twins for $25,000. This way, the Nats can send Speigner (Johan’s arch-rival) to the minors. McDonald, a former No. 1 draft pick with the Orioles, will report to Class AAA Rochester on Tuesday at Durham.

Twins lineup: Jason Bartlett SS, Jeff Cirillo 1B, Joe Mauer C, Michael Cuddyer RF, Torii Hunter CF, Jason Kubel LF, Luis Rodriguez 3B, Nick Punto 2B, Johan Santana P.

Marlins lineup: Brett Carroll CF, Dan Uggla 2B, Hanley Ramirez SS, Daniel Cabrera 3B, Josh Willingham LF, Aaron Boone 1B, Jeremy Hermida, Matt Treanor C, Byung-Hyun Kim RHP.

Postgame Morneau update

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

It sounds like Justin Morneau was in good spirits tonight. Watching the Twins’ 11-1 victory from his hospital bed, he sent a text message to the team’s baseball communications manager Mike Herman: “Wally Pipp.”

“So it’s a good night,” Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said, relaying that anecdote. “Mourny’s feeling better.”

Gardenhire called the decision to have Morneau stay in the hospital a second night, “just precautionary stuff.”

The Twins continue to use the words “couple days” when asked how long Morneau will be out of action. With a positive checkup tomorrow, it seems reasonable that he’d return sometime during the next series against Toronto, but nobody will be sure until Morneau leaves the hospital.

Morneau remains hospitalized; Saturday lineups

Saturday, June 23rd, 2007

Twins first baseman Justin Morneau remained at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, Fla., as of 3 p.m. (Central) Saturday afternoon. According to the team, he was waiting to be seen by a doctor and there was hope he would be out of the hospital soon. One player who talked to Morneau by cell phone said the first baseman’s spirits were up but that he was “sore.” Morneau has played 191 consecutive games, but that streak will obviously end tonight.

Update: The reason Morneau remained in the hospital was to see a specialist. Afterward, he’ll be released and is expected to spend the night at the team hotel resting. When asked about long-term replacements should Morneau need to go on the DL, Manager Ron Gardenhire mentioned Garrett Jones but said the team still hopes Morneau will only be out a couple days. The current diagnosis is a bruised right lung.

Update: The specialist decided Morneau should stay another night in the hospital. He will have blood tests Sunday morning and another X-Ray, but the team fully expects him to be released from the hospital in the morning and then fly to Minnesota on the team flight following Sunday’s game. For now the diagnosis is still a bruised right lung.

Twins lineup: Luis Castillo 2B, Nick Punto 3B, Joe Mauer C, Michael Cuddyer, Torii Hunter CF, Jason Kubel LF, Jeff Cirillo 1B, Jason Bartlett SS, Carlos Silva P.

Marlins lineup: Amezaga CF, Uggla 2B, Ramirez SS, Cabrera 3B, Jacobs 1B, Willingham LF, Hermida RF, Olivo C, Johnson P.

Twins get good news on Morneau

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Twins first baseman Justin Morneau has a bruised lung and is being held overnight at Memorial Hospital West in Pembroke Pines, Fla.

But X-Rays were negative, meaning they showed no broken bones, and a CT-Scan came back normal, according to Mike Herman, the team’s manager of baseball communications, who received updates from Twins assistant trainer Dave Pruemer.

Morneau is not expected to play the rest of this series against the Florida Marlins and will be re-evaluated Sunday by a Marlins team doctor.

Morneau was wheeled from Dolphins Stadium in a stretcher, while wearing an oxygen mask after a home plate collision with Marlins catcher Miguel Olivo in the eighth inning.

Morneau coughed up blood while sitting on the bench, and appeared to have a rib-cage or sternum injury. He was taken to a local hospital for X-rays and scans.

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire blamed himself for the team’s 5-4 loss, saying he should have had Pat Neshek ready to replace Juan Rincon, who gave up the game-winning home run to Hanley Ramirez in the eighth inning. The clubhouse was very quiet, as teammates expressed their concern for the reigning American League Most Valuable Player.

That’s the final update of the night on this blog, but we’ll be tracking the story tomorrow.

Breaking news: Morneau heads to hospital

Friday, June 22nd, 2007

Justin Morneau left Friday’s Twins game after colliding with Marlins catcher Miguel Olivo in the eighth inning. Morneau appeared to catch his sternum on Olivo’s left shoulder and the impact stopped Morneau to a halt. The ball scooted past Olivo, and Morneau was able to touch home plate for a run, but he stayed hunched over as Manager Ron Gardenhire came to check on him.

Luis Rodriguez took Morneau’s place at first base for the bottom of the eighth. Updates to come.

UPDATE: Morneau was taken to a hospital for X-rays and scans on his chest. The game just ended with a 5-4 Florida victory. I’ll head down to get the news and get updates here ASAP.

Pregame: Dontrelle Willis will not face the Twins on Sunday. He’s throwing, but the team pushed back his start because of a forearm strain. Byung-Hyun Kim is expected to take his place.

Twins lineup: Luis Castillo 2B, Joe Mauer C, Michael Cuddyer RF, Justin Morneau 1B, Torii Hunter CF, Jeff Cirillo 3B, Lew Ford LF, Jason Bartlett SS, Boof Bonser P.

Marlins lineup: Amazega CF, Ugglua 2B, Ramirez SS, Cabrera 3B, Willingham LF, Hermida RF, Olivo C, Boone 1B, Olsen P.
