Michael Cuddyer is headed to the disabled list with ligament damage in his right thumb, and the Twins have promoted Darnell McDonald from Class AAA Rochester to take his place on the roster, Manager Ron Gardenhire told KSTP AM-1500 this morning.

La Velle spoke to GM Terry Ryan, who declined to confirm the roster move but said Cuddyer was seeing hand specialist Dr. Tom Varecka today. I called KSTP, and they played me a tape of Gardenhire’s morning interview.

Gardenhire said Cuddyer had “some kind of ligament damage in his thumb. … I don’t think it’s a surgery-type thing, but it’s definitely going to take a couple weeks.” Gardenhire said he spoke to Ryan last night and discussed the roster move — Cuddyer to the DL with McDonald called up to take his place.

We’ll have more on this later today.

Update: The team made the move official this afternoon, calling Cuddyer’s injury a sprained thumb.
