Postgame update

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Well, the Scott Baker Show was pretty amazing. I’ll have lots more on that in the game story. Just wanted to pass along some news. The Twins have promoted Luis Rodriguez from Class AAA Rochester, and he’s supposed to be here in time for Saturday’s 11 a.m. start.

The word from Rochester is that Lew Ford fouled a ball off his foot and had to leave tonight’s game in the fifth inning. Kevin Slowey will be here for Tuesday’s start. So much to talk about regarding Baker, but I need to finish my stories first.

Game 2 lineups

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Spoke to Terry Ryan again briefly before Game 2, and he didn’t think there would be a roster move after tonight’s game. Any September callups could wait until Class AAA Rochester’s fate is determined. … Also, Joe Mauer was headed to play catch and take some swings in the batting cage. He stretched his hamstring before Game 1 and didn’t do any running, so it seems like he’s still a ways away from returning. … As La Velle pointed out in his blog, Francisco Liriano was in the clubhouse. Always good to see “Franchise.”

Note to Erik: Matt Macri isn’t on the 40-man. My bad. But Chris Basak is, and that put them at 38.

Royals lineup: David DeJesus CF, Mark Grudzielanek 2B, Ross Gload 1B, Billy Butler DH, Alex Gordon 3B, Shane Costa RF, John Buck C, Joey Gathright LF, Tony Pena SS. Starting pitcher: RH Gil Meche.

Twins lineup: Alexi Casilla 2B, Jason Bartlett SS, Torii Hunter CF, Justin Morneau 1B, Michael Cuddyer RF, Jason Kubel DH, Mike Redmond C, Rondell White LF, Nick Punto. Starting pitcher: RH Scott Baker.

Metrodome. Scheduled first pitch: 7:10 p.m.

Game 1 final: Royals 9, Twins 4

Friday, August 31st, 2007

The good: Julio DePaula pitched two innings of scoreless relief. That’s his fourth consecutive scoreless appearance since being recalled from Class AAA Rochester, and he’s lowered his ERA from 31.50 to 7.56. … Torii Hunter also connected for his 27th home run.

The bad: Kyle Davies held the Twins to three runs (two earned) on four hits in five innings. Since being traded from Atlanta to Kansas City, Davies is 2-0 with a 1.54 ERA (corrected) against the Twins and 0-3 with a 9.72 ERA in his other starts. After the game, the Royals actually sent Davies to Class AAA Omaha to make room on the roster for Mike Sweeney. Now, that is a slap in the face.
The ugly: Matt Garza took the loss after giving up eight runs (four earned) on nine hits in 5 1/3 innings. He didn’t pitch particularly well, and his fielding was worse. Alexi Casilla had to make a diving stop to prevent one error, and Garza’s wild throw to third base on Joey Gathright’s bunt broke open the game. … Hunter and Brian Buscher also committed errors for the Twins.

Stay tuned here for Game 2 lineups and other notes.

In-game update: No trades expected

Friday, August 31st, 2007

I spoke to Terry Ryan before the game, and he reiterated what he said to La Velle yesterday: He doesn’t expect to make any trades before tonight’s 11 p.m. deadline for teams to set playoff rosters. One Twin we were curious about was Carlos Silva, but it doesn’t appear he’s getting moved.

Update: The Twins just announced that LHP Jason Miller has been outrighted off the 40-man roster and assigned to the Class AAA Rochester roster. They now have 38 players on the 40 man, counting Matt Macri, who came in the trade for Ramon Ortiz. This means they could add up to two players currently not on the roster (RHP Nick Blackburn? C Jose Morales? INF Matt Tolbert?) for September callups.

Royals lineup: David DeJesus CF, Esteban German 2B, Ross Gload 1B, Billy Butler DH, Alex Gordon 3B, Emil Brown RF, Tony Pena SS, Joey Gathright, Jason La Rue C. Starting pitcher: RH Kyle Davies.

Twins lineup: Jason Tyner LF, Jason Bartlett SS, Torii Hunter CF, Justin Morneau 1B, Michael Cuddyer RF, Jason Kubel DH, Chris Heintz C, Brian Buscher 3B, Alexi Casilla 2B. Starting pitcher: RH Matt Garza.

Metrodome. First pitch: 1:11 p.m.

Game 1 lineups

Friday, August 31st, 2007

Still no lineups, last I looked. I got here about 9:40 a.m., and you’d barely know they played a Vikings game the night before. Updates to come.

Update: No huge revelations in Gardy’s pregame media session. Sounds like they’re hoping Jason Bartlett, Torii Hunter, Justin Morneau and Michael Cuddyer can play both ends of the doubleheader. Interesting to note the Twins will have three games within a 24-hour span, since tomorrow starts at 11 a.m.

Asked about the team’s Sept. 1 callups, and Gardy said beyond Kevin Slowey, Luis Rodriguez and Lew Ford, there probably wouldn’t be too many new faces. Perhaps one more pitcher. Though no names were mentioned, I think one to keep an eye on is Nick Blackburn, who would need to be added to the 40-man roster.
Royals lineup: David DeJesus CF, Esteban German 2B, Ross Gload 1B, Billy Butler DH, Alex Gordon 3B, Emil Brown RF, Tony Pena SS, Joey Gathright, Jason La Rue C. Starting pitcher: RH Kyle Davies.
