FORT MYERS — The Twins made two more cuts this morning, outrighting LHP Carmen Cali to Class AAA Rochester and assigning RHP Kevin Mulvey to minor-league camp.

Cali is out of options, but he cleared waivers, allowing the Twins to keep him in their system.

Mulvey, one of four players the Twins obtained from the Mets for Johan Santana, made a good impression on Manager Ron Gardenhire and staff, going 0-1 with a 6.00 ERA in three appearances.

Everett leading off and Punto as DH - Gardy should save this lineup for April 1st.

This is worse then a get away day lineup. The game is on TV to get fans excited about the upcoming season. Punto as a DH and Everett leading off will turn people off, not on.

Does outrighting Cali mean that Perkins will be the second lefty out of the pen?

Oh, boo-hoo, the line-up isnt optimal. Get over it. At least you have the chance to watch. Fans out of the area would just be happy to have the opportunity. Nice fan.

Anyway, I’ve been wondering lately, whats up with Pridie? Hows he doing?

KB says:

March 16th, 2008 at 10:04 am

I would be really disappointed in Gardy if he adjusted his line-up based on if the game was on TV or not.

I do wonder why Everett and Gomez are flipped. Gomez does have a significant lead on AB’s for the Spring. Maybe this is like a semi-day off.

Max says:

FYI: kb you don’t have to live in MN to see the game today. With DirecTV you can get the Sports Pack allowing access to all the regional sports networks and every single MLB Spring Training game that is being televised by each regional sports network. I’ve seen Yankees, Mets, Red Sox, Astros, Indians, Cubs, White Sox, Tigers, Dodgers, Cardinals, Orioles, etc. multiple times already.

That being said…that is quite possibly the weakest lineup I’ve ever seen a team bring to Ft. Myers. Expect a fine Gibbons. There is no way on God’s green earth you have 4 “regulars” in that lineup. Jeez louise that is pathetic. Joe please inquire/press the Jays pre/postgame about this. They are clearly not following the rules of the road for ST.

coco says:

March 16th, 2008 at 10:15 am

After seeing the 4 “regulars minimum” in the Blue Jays line-up, Gardy obviously put LNP as DH to “be fair”. :)

why is Go-Go batting 9th?????

Bobby says:

DH - Nick Punto
Miss America - Rosie O’Donnell

halfchest says:

March 16th, 2008 at 10:40 am

I wonder if they’re thinking let Gomez bat 9th see if he hits better there. Although he’s done well the last few days. I’m agreeing with the idea that it’s sort of a “half day” for him. Even then though I wish they would start him, have him bat leadoff then take him out after 2 or 3 at bats.

kb: Pridie seems like he’s doing good. I’ve heard he’s been the most consistent of the 3 in CF offensively and defensively but lacks the upside to make the Twins consider him. From what I’ve read he’s basically going to be the Twins 4 outfielder of the future. A better version of Tyner or Ford, with ability to play all three outfield positions decently just like those two could.

cm says:

March 16th, 2008 at 10:53 am

Geez, you guys. Chill out. Granted, you get to see a game and you want it to be the best, but it’s SPRING TRAINING. Know what that means? Yes, it’s a weak line up, so what? Say it with me this time … it’s SPRING TRAINING.

halfchest says:

March 16th, 2008 at 10:56 am

I agree cm,

I understand though too, I was a bit dissapointed as there’s been a few games where the Twins have put out a lineup where at least 1-6 it was pretty much what we should be seeing in the regular season. But saying F*ck Gardy is just ridiculous.

bufftwins says:

March 16th, 2008 at 10:57 am

What the heck is this? After his play yesterday, why is Gomez batting 9th? I thought they were trying to make him a lead off man. I understand Punto might need some at bats, so I can live with that today, but I hope this is the last game in Twins history where LNP is the D-H. I thought there was a rule where
visiting teams had to dress at least
4 regulars? There’s only 4 players in the Toronto lineup that will make the roster and 3 of them are backups.

Dylan says:

March 16th, 2008 at 11:03 am

Perhaps Gardy just wants to get Everett and Punto more ABs. Big freaking deal. It’s spring training. Are you people also going to complain if he pulls Livan after 4 innings if he has a shutout going? No, because IT’S SPRING TRAINING. Take a deep breath. Repeat after me. “It’s. Spring. Training.”

Next, try this one: “I will try very, very hard not to forget my medication anymore.”

AJ Pesh says:

March 16th, 2008 at 11:05 am

KB. I am going to kick you in the teeth. Get over it.

Punto at DH??? Shouldn’t the Twins be giving at-bats to younger players so they can develop yet? And the Span/Gomez/Pridie doesn’t seem to be over. Why not DH Span or Pridie?

Nick Punto is the worst player in the major leagues. Anybody that replies he plays good defense blah blah blah. Heard that story a million times. Bottom-line: Twins = 12th in offense last year = losing record.

halfchest says:

March 16th, 2008 at 11:13 am

So enough whining about the lineup and getting mad at those whining about the lineup. How about those Twins yesterday. Slowey looked great lots of movement on his fastball, making people stand still thinking it was going to miss then it slid right in there. I’m really excited to see if this guy can pitch as good as he did last Fall during his second call up.

T says:

March 16th, 2008 at 11:16 am

Perhaps Gardy just wants to get Everett and Punto more ABs. Big freaking deal. It’s spring training.

No kidding. The moment I saw Everett leading off I knew what 90% of the posts here were going to be.

Notice also that Gardy has Monroe in left and Gomez batting ninth. It looks like he’s trying other players in various lineup spots, and then filling in other guys who need ABs around it. In that case it’s Everett and Punto.

Maybe he could’ve tried Harris leading off, with Everett and Punto hitting low in the order, but that’d be the only thing I’d say could be different.

Shouldn’t the Twins be giving at-bats to younger players so they can develop yet?

Only if those young guys are going to be with the big team this season. The team’s lineup is essentially set with 2B and CF the only big question marks. However the bench still needs to get tuned up a bit.

JMAN says:

BC Beneke says:

Gardenhire should be fired for putting Punto in at DH. That is one of the worst sins in baseball history. HGH is nothing compared to Punto as a DH! Ty Cobb pistol whipping a man? NOTHING compared to Punto being a DH! That man dying… ok, that’s probably a bit worse than Punto being a DH, but if we pistol Whip Gardy into a coma… I think we are on equal terms. This is disgusting, and I don’t care that it’s preseason… Gardy should be fired for this crime against baseball morality.

Send Nick Punto to Siberia to play baseball… He is the worst major league baseball player in the game, and to have him as a DH is a crime! When he plays I would DH for him, and let the pitcher hit for christ sake!

I’ve not been this upset about something so meaningless for quite some time, but this is just an abomination against GOD, and Baseball. Gardy’s parents should be slapped for having given birth to such a moron!

hasy 9187 says:

Just sit back and enjoy the game on t.v. It is spring training and thats when you should be tinkering with lineups and trying different combinations, not during the regular season. Gardy knows what he is doing…

BC Beneke says:

March 16th, 2008 at 11:25 am

holy crap, this game is on tv, and punto is the DH. I change my mind… Ty Cobb Pistol Whipping the guy to death was not worse than this. This is a slap in the face to every single Twins fan, and I think it’s time to take Gardy out back, and put the old horse out of his misery… maybe we can make glue out of him so he has some value?

Shep says:

March 16th, 2008 at 11:28 am

Punto can’t hit and should only be in the lineup for his defense. I know this is spring training, but I’d rather have Neshek DH than Punto!

Shaun says:

March 16th, 2008 at 11:29 am

While I think it’s ironic Punto is the “designated hitter,” since this is only a ST game it’s not worth raising your blood pressure about.

If this was the lineup on March 31st against Torii’s Angels, then bash away.

I do not understand all the angst over a spring training game. I do not know the rationale behind this particular lineup. Maybe some guys need a day off, maybe another is dinged up, maybe Gardenhire simply wanted to look at a few guys in different spots in the batting order.

As another mentioned, if Gardenhire trots this lineup out for the home opener, then I would be right in there with the rest of you complaining.

mj1 says:

March 16th, 2008 at 12:07 pm

BC Beneke says:

BC Beneke, I read these blogs frequently. You often post interesting thoughts, yet you also wonder out loud why people pick on you. Your posts this weekend really should answer that for you - yesterday being VERY negative about the lineup and predicting the Twins would score no runs (you looked like a real genius after the game, didn’t you?). Today you are ready to crucify Gardy for DHing Punto… I’m not a huge Punto fan but he is valuable as a reserve infielder and he’s clearly working on hitting, although not very successfully, apparently. Maybe Gardy thought letting him DH will focus on just hitting for one day? Will you eat your keyboard if he’s 3 for 4 today?

My point is - THANK YOU for your frequent insightful posts, but if you really care what others think about you, QUIT being such a WHINER.

scott says:

March 16th, 2008 at 12:49 pm

BC, you’re not getting my point (but you sure are proving it).

From anyone else it would obviously be sarcasm, but you’re sincere with some of the rediculous things you say, so it’s hard to say. Case in point, when you explained that you were being sarcastic, you went on to say that DH’ing Punto is a sin agains God and man.

And it’s a fact that Punto is the worst player in MLB? Really? Maybe he’s the worst player in MLB by matter of opinion of a hyperbolic fan who demonstrates on a regular basis that he has no idea what he’s talking about… but fact? Where can I look that fact up?

Burning Bush says:

March 16th, 2008 at 12:50 pm

Are you people mad for real. Its a baseball game on TV. Its March the season is around the corner. I can almost smell the green grass the leaves and flowers will be blooming in no time. You all need to sit back and relax watch a little baseball. Listen to the bats hit the balls watch Gomez launch a ball to 3rd and stop a runner from tagging up see Mauer lead my example and run out a short pop fly. Its baseball people how can you complian. If your that mad about it go seed the lawn.

Everett_Fan says:

We all must prioritize life’s issues as large, small and meaningless.
Some people have their priorities totally out of whack. (at least in the eyes of the rest of us)
Spring Training lineups are somewhere between meaningless and diddley.

sane says:

March 16th, 2008 at 1:05 pm

What Gomez showed yesterday and today, that wasn’t evident previously, was baserunning intuition.
There are many fast (but clueless) baserunners.
If Gomez is the fastest runner in MLB AND aggressive-smart as a baserunner, his value and excitement level will be off the charts.

Karlee says:

March 16th, 2008 at 1:13 pm

Idiots.
It’s SPRING TRAINING.
Yesteday he got a two rbi triple, single, stolen base, walk and run scored.
Im guessing they want to see if it just wasn’t out of luck.

This is the time where you can mess and tinker with your line up and get away with it. SO breathe, you really think gardy would actually think punto as a DH a good thing? Thats like saying Sindey Ponson is an amazing pitcher, and he should be number two in the rotation.

mj1 says:

March 16th, 2008 at 1:14 pm

as much as gomez has to learn, and gain some humility, stop pickin his nose and biting his fingernails, lol, its going to be very hard to keep him off the major league roster this year…hell, if all he did was bunt, its almost a run or two a game….im not sure in all my years, ive seen anything like this kid…from a sheer speed point that is…..i feel for span, who is actually more prepared to play and leadoff.. just what do ya do….

BC Beneke says:

March 16th, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Scott. I got your point. I’m showing you how much it matters. I am on here to talk about baseball, and compared Nick Punto’s Batting Average, onbase percentage, and slugging percentage to everyone else in baseball last year. There were 28.8% of the American League Pitchers that took a swing last year that were better than he was… these are pitchers that get to bat maybe 7 times a season, and they looked more comfortable at the plate.

Take a look at his fielding percentages at 3rd base, SS, and 2nd Base over his career, and he’s not a top fielder. He makes some spectacular plays, but he is not consistant, and is barely a 25th player.

Gardenhire loves him, and for that I believe that Gardenhire is a FOOL!

I don’t care if the twins score 30 runs, and Punto hits 4 homers today… the fact that he is in the DH spot today is just wrong minor league game, spring training game, 3rd grade girls softball game… either way he is not qualified to be a DH.

So relax… and you can make snide comments about me it’s cool. I’ve earned them, and I will continue to earn them because I will never stop voicing my opinion.

Nick Punto is worthless, you prove me wrong. Explain how he is qualified to be a DH even in a preseason game? Could they not have called up a minor leaguer today to play? Wasn’t there a celeb in the crowd like the yankees did with Billy Crystal the other day? When Nick Punto is your best option at DH… forfit the game. The fact that this is on TV, and we pay money for cable tv, direct tv, or Dishnetwork… it is a slap in the face to fans to have to watch Nick Punto play baseball. It’s about as stupid as watching Nascar.

sy says:

March 16th, 2008 at 1:16 pm

Livan is just getting out the kinks and getting ready for the regular season.
Once he is fine-tuned, he will have another brutal 4.93 ERA again this year unless he continues to deteriorate as he has for the past four years.

Jerry D says:

March 16th, 2008 at 1:18 pm

I think it is time to contact the Angels and see whom they will give us to take Livan off our hands. With Lackey and Escobar out for a while they are in need of a veteran more than the Twins are. Maybe we can weasel another JC Romero for Alexi Casilla deal with them.

Yes some of the things I say are dead serious, and you don’t have to like them, but this is about the baseball, not about me… so thank you for the entertainment. I’m going to take my dog for a walk. It’s far more meaningful than any Atbat that Punto has had in 2 years…

blah blah blah… he’s still worthless… if he gets more than 150 atbats in the real season Gardenhire failed his job.

Everett_Fan says:

March 16th, 2008 at 1:24 pm

T says:

Nick Punto is worthless, you prove me wrong. Explain how he is qualified to be a DH even in a preseason game?

Because Punto is going to be the super-util guy come March 31st, and the best way to get him some ABs to see if he can get his bat back is when the game don’t mean anything.

And boy, if you think Punto isn’t going to take an AB in all of 08 you’re fooling yourself. Unless you think that the Twins infield will be blessed to have not one single injury through all of 2008.

BC Beneke says:

March 16th, 2008 at 1:33 pm

Karlee… Hating Nick Punto is a full time job as a twins fan. There is no offseason to his inability to be a major league ball player. Broken Clocks are right twice a day, and Nick Punto got a bunt down in preseason… how many did he fail at last season? So many that even his guardian Gardenhire threw up his hands and said that punto needed to learn how to bunt, and quit putting the ball in the air.

This is fun for me… the twins have 50 players more qualified than Punto to be and I’m guessing at least 30 fans in attendence that could out hit him.

thrylos98 says:

March 16th, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Ok, it is spring training. And the single issue with Punto at DH is that he is taking bats away from people who need to be evaluated & there are on the cusp of making the roaster. He apparently earned a roaster spot. He does not to be in a role where he will not be in the season.

It is just irritating to see and it is simple bad management of a team

T- I watched a few hundred games last year just like every year, and Nick Punto looked worse at bat than most pitchers do, and I was trying to state that there were pitchers with as few as 7 atbats who had nicer swings than punto. I didn’t type that correctly.

Punto doesn’t deserve more than 150 atbats in the bigs in 2008… I would keep both Buscher and Tolbert ahead of him.

T I would keep you over him.

Wasting ST atbats for a player on the cusp is just wrong… and any time you give atbats to Punto it’s just wrong. WE already know that Gardy’s “boy” will make the roster. So why waste atbats?

A lot of baseball players have deals with bat companies where they get their bats cheap, or even free. Nick Punto should have to pay twice for each bat that is given to him as it’s a waste of WOOD to be in his hands!

Its a depressing day because Punto was the DH? I think you need something else in life. There is no way the a spring training game would make me feel depressed. I don’t know maybe its something other than the ball game but it you make it sound as if it is because of the game. Its just a game its not that big of a deal. Get over it its almost over. If the day is make you feel that sad maybe you should be better off finding a nice high bridge and taking that faithful leap because you can’t seem to get your priorities straight.

I think I said it about 9 times so far today that I’m just playing around, but I absolutely hate Nick Punto, and I think he’s a pretty worthless ball player, and I cannot stand Denard Span so seeing Gomez get hurt isn’t so great.

I’m talking about baseball, and having fun with it, and you are coming after me personally. I think you are the one that needs to get a grip pal.

Either way I’m bored with this place. no senses of humor, and/or worse… punto and span fans which I’d rather not waste my time with.

There are way more better ways to prioritize a line-up with many more number of people to be looked at and given a chance to see what they can offer at the plate!!

thrylos98,
If the only purpose of ST was to determine who makes the team, than Morneau, Mauer, Cuddyer, Everett, Harris, etc. also shouldn’t get AB.
And everyone you mentioned except Ruiz did get AB. (probably because Ruiz has already proved he can hit)
The other purpose of ST is to get regulars prepared (in a groove if possible) for regular season. Punto has nothing to prove defensively, but desperately needs to fix his hitting.
That is why he was DH ahead of maybe four-six guys who will be in Rochester.

Buddy Grant says:

“Are you people also going to complain if he pulls Livan after 4 innings if he has a shutout going? ”
Oops:-)

ST game or not, I find it depressing that Gardy would even consider using historically bad hitters in the lead off and DH slots. Hernandez basically throwing batting practise is not a real exciting opening day prospect either. I’m very happy Gomez is hitting the ball though (and that he’s okay after the wall crash).

BC,
By the way, I think Punto could go to your myspace page and have a field day critiquing you’re “professional” writing. Are you a “professional” writer because you have work published on myspace? I’ve held my tongue for a long time, but you think WAY too highly of yourself.
And don’t complain about my post, cause I’m just having fun, and I’m about to walk my dog.

BC Beneke says:

Scott-

I’m a professional writer because I’ve been published, recorded, and featured in books, magazines, and cds… so thank you for allowing me to plug my work.

http://www.myspace.com/collsliteraryspot
I just finished a radio interview about 10 minutes ago… and you can find it on Colleen’s page. So you can attack me after actually hearing my work.

So don’t hold your tongue… spit your fire at me anytime you like.

Disliking my work is not that important to me. The fact that you are defending Nick Punto says more about your lack of knowledge about baseball than it does anything else now doesn’t it?

BC Beneke says:

Burning Bush… no such chance. I’m going to be here for another 30-40-50 years, and I’m going to drive the nails in for you pal.

I do like your name because I’d like to see Bush burned as well. However I’m not a big fan of you. I don’t really think of myself as much of a girl, but coming from a Btch like you I can see where you could get that mixed up.

This started out as a joke, and you missed it completely, and then came after me. Well, go through my website, and we can talk there, and if you’d like to do something… run me over, push me off a cliff or whatever silly notion you’ve got… may I suggest a restaurant you stop at first because you’re going to need to get your energy up darlin.

scott says:

You’re welcome for the opportunity to plug your work. I set ‘em up, you knock ‘em down.

It reminds me of 12 year olds on youtube who make their username ABC Productions, and then they think that makes them a production company. You were interviewed by another myspace member, and you talked about how you wrote a bunch of poems you’d like to publish, but the only problem is that you don’t have a publisher. That’s an annoying detail, isn’t it?

Anyway, I’ll leave you alone now. I’m starting to feel a bit mean, and this has nothing to do with baseball.

The word is that Punto is hitting well in BP, but isn’t taking his good swing into the game. Gardy just wants him to concentrate on his hitting. He’s trying to help him get his bat going a little. The manager’s job is to get his players prepared for the season.

Gardy wants Everett to get an extra AB today. That’s why he is leading off. He’s probably also trying to get Adam fired up a little. He has to get the players who will be on the team, prepared to play.

Thanks Scott. My novels have not been published.

My poetry has been published.

Voices for Carmen a book dedicated to raising money for a victim of horrible spousal abuse. I am a featured poet in that book.

David E. Navarro is publishing a book of poetry in June in which I’m a featured poet.

Miriam Jacobs has released several books and I’m featured in a couple of them.

This interview was about my music. So thanks again Scott, I will keep your opinions right where they belong next to my heart, and bless you for again bringing up me.

It still does not excuse you for being a Nick Punto fan.

scott says:

March 16th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Who says I’m a Nick Punto fan? I’m just annoyed by people who spout the same over the top dramatic punto/gardy crap. I hope he does what Silva did last year and shuts people up. He probably won’t, but even though he’s one of my least favorite players, nothing would make me happier.

PS, even though I think your writing is pseudointellectual BS - based on your playlist, you have pretty good taste in music.

PPS, I was published in a book of poetry when I was in 2nd grade. Did the publisher ask you to buy the book when it was done?

Punto as DH? Is Gardy trying to get fired?

Buddy Grant says:

March 16th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

“this is spring training … get over the lineup … geez”
This is Gardy we’re talking about, he likes to use .200 hitters on the top of the batting order during the regular season as well. At least Punto was not hitting clean up today because he hit some high flies in BP.

T says:

March 16th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

The fact that you are defending Nick Punto says more about your lack of knowledge about baseball than it does anything else now doesn’t it?

Oh my god! There’s somebody who doesn’t wish Punto were dead? And they had the audacity to disagree with your claims that Punto is the worst player ever and Gardy should be killed for putting him in the lineup for a Spring Training game?

Oh that monster! How DARE they challenge the almight BC, renowned author and esteemed overexaggerator.

Yeah, if you want to talk baseball here GBG you’re best bet is to check early in the mornings when the entries are first written.

By about noon, they’ve degraded to the usual batch of whines and moans.

Howard’s is probably the best bet. You can talk baseball and get some haiku.
