Everett:

88-89 will be a 'joke' if that's all Cisco has. Thus far, there's no reason to believe it is.

I recall people getting concerned during a recent spring training when Joe Nathan's fastball was high 80's, very low 90's. Later we heard from Joe himself that that's pretty normal for him that time of the year, that it always takes him a while to get his arm to where he hits 95. Sure enough, he was eventually throwing 95, just like always.

"It doesn't hurt" is a BIG deal. Step 2 is "velocity & quality of pitches picks up." Step 3 will be stretching the pitch count.

As I see it, Cisco hasn't really even started on step 2 yet, that all we're seeing thus far is stretching out of "it doesn't hurt." I just don't want to see step 2 rushed.

As for his delivery - if the choice is use it & become Mark Prior or Kerry Wood or change it & become durable if not completely dominating, I'll take #2.

Granted, those aren't the only options ...

For a power strikeout type pitcher, people got a lot more wood on his pitches than they should have.

sock_puppet (I love that name!) -

About Garza, keep in mind that he gave up 96 hits in 83 innings with a WHIP of 1.54. Combine that with the five wins, and it's silly to say that our rotation is worse than last year because Garza's gone. It's possibly worse than it would be THIS year, assuming he at least partly lives up to potential. But replacing what he did last year will be extremely easy.

This Liriano thing is more serious than they are letting on. In addition to the injury they have altered his delivery, that also hampers his ability to throw the same pitches as before. 88-89 mph is a joke. If this were Carmen Cali throwing that speed people would have given up on him. It isn't enough for him to feel good. This is the majors. In order to pitch well again he needs to find some of his old stuff. 17 months and we are still trying to be optimistic just because he feels ok? yikes.

Regarding the Brendan Harris one-year-wonder theory:
YR LEVEL AVG HR RBI
'02 HI-A .328 15 65
'03 AA .280 5 52
'04 AAA-MLB .284 18 62
'05 AAA-MLB .271 14 84
'06 AAA-MLB .293 11 63
'07 MLB .286 12 59
Compare those numbers with LNP, Luis Rodriguez, Luis Rivas and Luis Castillo.
Harris is not tearing up ST, but if he has a bad season, then 2008 will be the glich, not 2007.
