Twins rained out in Chicago
Posted on April 10th, 2008 – 1:38 PMBy Joe Christensen
CHICAGO — Tonight’s game between the Twins and White Sox has been postponed because of rain. The Twins are leaving for Kansas City, where they are scheduled to begin a three-game series on Friday.
The starting pitchers have simply been pushed back, so the Twins will send Livan Hernandez, Boof Bonser and Nick Blackburn up against the Royals. Scott Baker is scheduled to pitch in Detroit on Monday, and Tuesday is TBA.
UPDATE: The Twins and White Sox will make up today’s postponement on June 9, at 2:05 p.m. That was a scheduled off day in a three-city trip to Chicago, Cleveland and Milwaukee, which now becomes a 10-game trip.

thanks joe….damn i hate rainouts…sometimes having a dome isnt so bad…
i was anxious to see if those twins bats were going to stay alive or if this was a one game blowout…lets hope the weather is better in kc…
Oh well, i guess there is still new episodes of the office and scrubs on tonight that are worth watching.
Two days in a row without the Twins on TV…
Bummer.
I know T……
no game sunday, tues-thurs
T
make that 3 days in a row since Friday’s game was bumped for the Wild Playoff game.
watching a re-run of last nites game now
kubels grannie coming up shortly
Why, with the concern over the starters (now, dare I say, “washed away”), is the conversation limited to whether or not Slowey’s healthy or Liriano’s injured? Seems to me we had a few other pitchers competing for the starting rotation this spring. Why box ourselves in vs. give a shot to Perkins or Humber, for example?!?! If anyone has a good guess or actual knowledge for that reasoning, I’d love to hear it.
Thank God. I smelled injuries coming.
Chance of rain is a little less in KC tomorrow night. But just as windy. And there’ll be that wet field there too.
I hope they postpone tomorrow night too.
And I’d slightly disagree with Joe’s headline “Chilly Night”. It was cold last night (wind chills in lower 30’s).
Dean, Perkins and Humber haven’t done all that well in AAA yet.
Just saw the best part of Kubel’s slam……it emptied the stadium.
All the whiners go home now!
thoughts on if monroe continues to struggle; would dmiti young or sammy sosa be real options to upgrade our dh spot and o-f bench options?
Dean, I’d guess the biggest reason was just that Liriano was on the right schedule so it seemed like a pretty simple move to make. The discussion probably didn’t get much beyond that because they didn’t have to actually make a decision — but if it came down to it, perhaps more people would have been considered (and may still be, with Tuesday’s starter up in the air).
i dont think they are too worried about monroe…between kubel and monroe and the bench they have it covered…monroe just a bit slow starting - a month from now, i would start thinking differently - and they have a couple possibilities in ruiz and knott, who were late cuts this spring….
The only bad thing about this rain out is that the Twins will not face Contreras… oh well
Bad news for those of us who were looking forward to not seeing Booooooof Saturday in KC.
gobble i wouldn’t mind Dimitri but i doubt the Nats would part with him didn’t they just resign him? Sosa is too much of a head case IMO.
Think the Nats are looking to trade Nick Johnson instead
Dimitri gets paid too much to be a bench player. We already got a DH.
Can Sosa hit? Or just strike out?
nick johnson has been playing every day, maybe dmitri is hurt? just thinking down the road a ways.

You’ve got a fever, and the only prescription is more Kubel.

grrrr, i hate off days!
Not much you can though Between when there is a driving rain coming down with the wind. No way they can play here.
T: Try 3 days with no Twins on the tube. The Twins-Royals game on Friday is not on TV because of the Wild playoff game. FSN is adding a game against the Yankees later this summer. Thank god I have MLBTV on the computer.
looking for options to improve our hitting we won’t run into bad pitching like last night to often. would be nice to have someone decent to come off the bench on occasion or pinch hit. of course if you think monroe is the answer ….. i guess punto can pinch hit.
How can a game be rained out four hours before it starts?
I believe the Twins control their own destiny, right? If we win out, we’ll make the playoffs.
fema issued a flood warning!
It’s right they didn’t reschedule the game for May 5th. Woulda meant a month without an off day.
To start the season, the Twins were scheduled to play 20 of 21 days.
Even worse in May, they have to play 20 straight days.
I was at the Shamrocks in St Paul. I watched the whole game. It wasn’t on last night? That place doesn’t seem like the type of place to have MLB Extra Innings.
romer,
Also, the couldn’t schedule it for May 5th, from a Chicago standpoint as they already have a game on that day.
Well said, Can’t Catch 22. I can now watch Office, Scrubs, and 30 Rock uniterrupted at their scheduled time… of course I will still have to flip over quick to see who got voted off Idol…
I just noticed that the replacement game for tomorrow nights FSN bump is currently scheduled to be a day game (Aug. 13 vs. NYY).
Great the replace a night game with a day game so most people won’t be able to watch it anyway, smart move FSN.
what’s len3 been doing chasing his old girlfirends around chicago all week?
how’s the weather up there it’s raining/sleet and windy in so. mn.
Zach Johnson is in first right now at 3 under can the little kid from Iowa do it again? Sorry looking for something else on a rainy day.
Tonight’s rainout is a good thing. Morneau and Kubel are battling the flu, Lamb has a sore foot after fouling a ball off of it, and the weather in June will no doubt be warmer and hopefully drier in Chicago. Plus, Bass gets an extra day after 4 innings of work last night and now Sunday’s starter in KC is no longer in question. I think the
re-scheduled game in June is 1:05 CST.
I hope we can get Nathan into the game tomorrow night. He hasn’t pitched since last Saturday.
I think it was on MY29 in the cities…. was not on MLB extra innings
bufftwins- i have MLBTV too but I dont think i can watch twins games on there because they get blacked out. Do you know how that works??
I’d like to see them start Liriano when they get back to the Metrodome- especially on a weekend. You think that would be a near-capacity crowd?
here’s a link to a story from tampa on the rays possibly loooking for compensation from the twins for garza’s injury:
http://www.raysindex.com/2008/04/matt-garza-rays-could-seek-compensation.html
twinsfan32,
Last night’s game shouldn’t have been blacked out on MLB.TV unless you live in the White Sox broadcast territory.
Also, MLB.TV doesn’t have to worry about certain broadcast rights for games. FSN North isn’t going to broadcast a game that’s on channel 29 since they don’t have the rights to it. They might show it later, but not at the same time.
Shaun,
What you say is true for the Twin Cities Metro Area, but not for outstate MN.
FSN has simultaneously broadcast MY29 games and ESPN games in outstate MN, as many outstate fans may not get MY29 through their cable/satellite providers.
So far this season they have be broadcast on an Alternate Channel instead of the main FSN channel.
Ahh thanks for the info Sweetone. Last night though some Twins fans I talk to during the games talked about it being blacked out on FSN North. Also someone in CA said it was blacked out on Extra Innings.
Well i live in Minny so im on the twins market. But my question is when the game isn’t on FSN north or MY29 like tomorrow’s game, would i get to watch the Royals tv broadcast or would i get blacked out?
FSN had the Wolves game on last night, so it was on My29 which is a local channel. Outstate viewers did not have access to it. Tomorrow night’s game has been bumped from FSN because of the Wild game. So no local TV there either.
FSN shows sunday My29 games outstate, but didnt last night becasue they had a secheduled Wolves game… so outstaters were screwed last night.
re Rays and compensation: That’s a great idea. They can get Nick Punto or Craig Monroe.
We need time off it will allow Liriano another start at AAA and give the ailing flu crew time to convalesce.
That is assuming we get rained out in KC too. The weather calls for rain the next 4 days in KC MO.
Double-headers anyone?
The way I read the rule, the Rays are not entitled to compensation. In every case where a team has received compensation after a trade, the compensating team had treated an injury and then hid it from the other team. For example, in the Gary Majiewski case, the Nationals had treated the injury with a cortisone shot and then hid the injury from the Reds prior to the trade. Treatment implies foreknowledge. In the absence of treatment, there is no proof of foreknowledge.
The Twins never treated this injury because they didn’t know about it. Hence there was no deception and no compensation.
would be nice to have someone decent to come off the bench on occasion or pinch hit.
You don’t aquire Dmitri Young to be a bench option.
Monroe will work off the bench and Kubel will start at DH everyday. There’s no place in the lineup for Dmitri Young as DH.
Interseting D-Ray article on Garza. However…
Garza was one of the top pitching prospects in baseball and the Rays were forced to give up a potential all-star and former #1 overall pick, Delmon Young, in order to secure his services.
Wrong. The Twins inquired about Young and were told Garza was required or there would be no talks.
cmath, let’s assume you’re right and no proof can be shown that the Twins hid an injury.
But what if they did hide the “injury”, or injury concern? What if Garza did complain about it to the Twins, and now he tells the Rays that the Twins knew something was up?
That would be the end of Bill Smith’s good relationship with the Rays, right? And would it hurt his reputation in MLB?
So the pertinent question becomes, did Bill Smith have any inkling about Garza’s condition, and did the Rays ask for any such information about the players they got?
Caveat emptor works here too.
I don’t know if there are official forms or records requests teams use in these trades. What are the requirements there? Just the medical records?
To finish, it’s been reported that Garza had this slight nagging condition in college. The Rays must have known this, or at least, they SHOULD have known this.
If I were the Rays GM, I damn well would have asked the Twins in writing about it.
Presuming the Rays GM did just that, the Twins could have said they knew about it, but that it didn’t blossum, and just look at the guy with his 96 mph capability and the fact that he’s not needed any medical attention, etc.
So,
A) If the Rays didn’t inquire about the condition going back to college, they should have — and the Twins are off the hook. Or
B) If they did inquire and the Twins told them the truth, then the Rays took the caveat emptor chance and it’s tough luck for them. Or
C) The Rays asked and the Twins lied or demurred, the Rays will be pissed off and probably can’t prove anything.
SweetOne, chances are the Aug 13th game will be rebroadcast during the evening like this past Monday’s was.
I have to believe if the Twins had any inkling of an injury, they would have shut Garza down immediately. The way they’ve babied Baker and Slowey is typical, and those are mild muscle strains. The last time the Twins dealt with a nerve problem, they nearly lost a top-five pitching prospect (Rainville). Garza was their top pitching prospect not named Francisco. If they knew about this, they would have dealt with it right away. But Garza kept pitching (and actually pitched better in September).
Thanks, cmath.
Dead issue.
Wow, the Tigers got 2 SB’s, 10 hits, and 6 runs tonight…….and their pitching staff got creamed again.
These guys are turning into laughers.
Ya the Tigers pitching is getting crushed so far this year….. and i love it!!
This team reminds me of 01-02 in the youth and enthusiasm department.
I can picture Gomez on the steps with a rally cap ala Mient, he seems like a very quirky personality.
I’m going to enjoy watching this team, they have more talent than the 01-02 Twins, now it just needs to blossom.
MC,
Great post and I agree 100%. This is a fun team to watch; young and talented. I look forward to seeing what they can do throughout the year.
