Scoreboard takes over the planet

Photo_04.jpgKANSAS CITY — OK, that’s an exaggeration. But I am staring at the biggest video scoreboard in the world, according to the Royals.

I had been reading about it, but you have to see it to believe it. This thing is 8,900 square feet. It’s 105 feet tall, 85 feet wide. In other words, it’s almost as big as the baseball diamond itself. (That’s another photo from my trusty camera phone. Doesn’t do it justice, of course. You will notice that the press box windows are closed. It’s freezing out there.)

The Kansas City Star ran this quote from Art Stewart, a longtime scout, who was one of the first to be shown on the new board: “Boy, you could see birthmarks and everything there, huh? It picks up everything.”

WEATHER UPDATE: I think they’ll play ball tonight, but it’s going to be miserable for the players. It’s about 43 degrees and feels like it’s in the 20s, with winds whipping at about 25-mph.

I’ve spent time on this blog criticizing airlines, though, and the good folks at Northwest managed to get me from Chicago to Kansas City through Minneapolis this morning. I didn’t like my chances last night, considering there was a flood warning for Chicago and a winter storm warning for Minnesota.

Stay tuned for lineups.
