Baker to be re-evaluated Sunday

Posted on May 3rd, 2008 – 9:30 PM
By Joe Christensen

Twins pitcher Scott Baker will have his strained right groin re-evaluated Sunday. General Manager Bill Smith was in the clubhouse for several minutes after the game, suggesting a roster move was coming, but the team put any decision on hold until Sunday.

Baker’s next scheduled start is Thursday. Asked if he thought he could make that start, Baker said he would know more Sunday.

He did say the injury wasn’t quite as severe as the last time, one week earlier in Texas. He said he felt it on his final pitch, to Curtis Granderson, which ended the third inning.

Easy decision(s) Slowey then Perkins. Next question.

Baker needs two weeks rest and get it healed. These are like high ankle sprains and Eveready bunnies. They go on and on.

Bonser
Blackburn
Levon
Slowey
Perkins

If by Perkins you mean Kevin Mulvey, I’d agree.

And we have no “Levon”

Sorry, bad joke. I’m old and remember Elton John. Look it up.

And Perkins has outpitched Mulvey lately and actually has pitched in the ML. Mulvey will get his chance but why burn ML time?

Mulvey pitched today, so he is in the same schedule as Baker. Perkins pitched yesterday so he can do it with an extra day of rest. Perkins projects as a spot reliever in the majors; Mulvey projects as a 4-5 starter. Neither have pitched deep into games yet, so it might be a toss up. I would have guessed that Bass might be into the equation, but the Twins seem reluctant to give him a start. I guess we’ll see :)

Perkins first, as the team needs a lefthander starter. Plus he has some major league experience. When Slowey is ready, he moves up, Korecky back to AAA, and Perkins pitches out of the pen until Baker comes back.

JDW says:

It’ll either be Bass or Perkins for the start. Perkins has ML service time Mulvey does not. Bass could start since there are more choices to fill a reliever spot short tim, like a Cali orsomeone else.

You’re all overlooking the obvious solution.

Joe… could you please post a blog entry headed, “Baker’s groin won’t heal” and explain to everyone that he’s simply injury prone and can’t possibly be ready to pitch Thursday?

That should solve the problem. Baker will throw a complete game shutout that night.

andrew says:

May 3rd, 2008 at 11:33 pm

Let Punto pitch. He’s been put in center randomly over Monroe, so why not?

Joe says:

May 4th, 2008 at 12:31 am

You give it to Perkins….. since there is only 3 starters right now you need a guy to be 100%, Mulvey isn’t ready and I don’t think that we should bring back Slowey until he is 100%…. Perkins has pitched good the last 2 outings and deserves it…. Slowey didn’t pitch great in ST and then had a bad outing before getting hurt….

twinsfan32 says:

May 4th, 2008 at 12:34 am

thats too bad. Baker is the Twins best pitcher by far.

T says:

May 4th, 2008 at 9:21 am

Joe, Slowey had a bad outing…but that could be attributed to his injury.

I would say put Baker on the DL if he’s not going to be 100% by Thursday, he’s shown he can pitch very well when healthy. Why hurry him back and risk further injury?

flatblade says:

May 4th, 2008 at 9:49 am

Yes, if there is any doubt they should disable Baker and get him healthy. It is a reall buzzkill to have him make a short start, especially when the bullpen is already taxed.

I believe the two pitchers coming up would be Perkins and Slowey. Perkins did have a complete game a couple starts ago, and Slowey sounds like he is almost all the way back, as well.

bufftwins says:

May 4th, 2008 at 10:03 am

I hope Baker can stay healthy. He is becoming a very solid pitcher when he avoids the long ball. First place on May 3rd! Not sure how long we can stay there, but the bats are starting to come alive. Nice to see hitters starting to hit the ball the other way more often. Just think if we would have not blown the two late innings leads in Detroit, the one in Chicago, and the 5-0 lead in Texas, the Twins would be 19-10! I know..coulda, woulda, shoulda.

I seem to think that every time Perkins stands on a major league mound he takes extreme pleasure in giving up dingers.

I’d be nervous about handing him a slot in the rotation.

Fry Dog says:

May 4th, 2008 at 11:12 am

Perkins and Guerrier would be better long term starters on this team than some others that have been in/out of the rotation so far this year. They are not perfect and would likely be 4-5 starters on most teams, but over the long haul would be statistically serviceable in those roles. No doubt the Twins will need another lefthanded reliever so I think that’s where Perkins ends up and Guerrier is already in the bullpen. Both guys throw up to 92 mph, which is a high velocity for this team unfortunately. Too many of our starters throw too soft…its just a matter of time until the big bats in Detroit and Chicago wake up. Could be much tougher each time we see them as the season goes on. Teams will learn to sit back and wait for the fat one against Livan, Slowey, even Boof.

big day today…new lineup should be out soon i hope…im sure monroe will stay in the lineup today - cant say enough about his nite …the more he plays the better he will become, as he has a nice approach at the plate-very intlligent kid, if you listen to his interviews…i just hope the very best for him…and if i were kubel, i would be looking at all my at bats very seriously, because if monroe gets a real chance, you wont take him out of the lineup

MartinP says:

Today´s lineup:
Gomez
Harris
Mauer
Morneau
Cuddyer
Monroe
Young
Tolbert
Punto

May 4th, 2008 at 11:56 am

would you all quit getting pansie injuries that set back the team for crissake and could we please have mauer and young, both big strong guys and talented players in the middle of the order hit the damn ball with some authority geez no homers that aint right for those two big boys lets go

mj1 says:

May 4th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

martin, is that official…i like it stacked with rt handers against rodgers, except im not sure i would start any platoon thing at 3rd base, at least start lamb and lets see what he can do….

sid says:

May 4th, 2008 at 12:01 pm

jimbo,
I’d rather have pansies that win baseball games than WWF losers on the team.
If Mauer NEVER hits another HR, but hits .325-.347 and Young can do the same (plus play good defense),I’d save the testosterone injections for the guys who can’t play worth a crap.

mj1 says:

May 4th, 2008 at 12:08 pm

as long as mauer is hitting for very high average and driving balls into the gap and off the walls, so be it..let the man be, thats all you can expect from anyone, in fact if you had nine guys doing what mauer can do, you wouldnt have any offensive worries at all, and alot of w.s. rings….as for young, leave him alone as he is very young and new to this team, and learing to play one of the toughest left field positions in the game….he will hit a ton in time and will also hit the long ball, but please have some patience with these guys…you wont be disappointed

T says:

May 4th, 2008 at 12:08 pm

I don’t agree with sitting Lamb after his day yesterday, but I like Monroe over Kubel considering one’s been cold and the other had a big hit last night.

Everett sits for Punto, which is a wash…and Tolbert gets a chance to hit today.

sploorp says:

May 4th, 2008 at 12:14 pm

Move Bass into the starter’s role and promote someone for the pen. Oh, and let Gomez play already! If he says he’s ready, then he’s ready. It’s a bruise, not a concussion.

BC Beneke says:

May 4th, 2008 at 12:46 pm

T-

If you don’t mind, since you are always correcting(?) my opinion… I just wanted to say TOLD YOU SO on Craig Monroe vs. the Tigers.

And as for Tolbert over Lamb… Lamb is a lefty, Rogers is a lefty, and there may very well have a ton of stats that say he’s not good against Rogers, he may just be sore, and Tolbert needs at bats.

Why don’t you complain more about the idea that Punto’s taking away major league atbats? When he was taking 14.5% of the plate appearances I wasn’t too upset… (playing once a week), but no way he deserves this many at bats.

Bill Smith just said that they are bringing up Slowey, for Thursday’s game, giving them 4 healthy starters… I think the Twins would be smart to play it safe with Baker because Anderson ahs proved himself to be the MVP of this team, and bringing up one of the prospects as a 5th starter for a couple of starts would be great. I like Bass staying in the bullpen.

sid says:

May 4th, 2008 at 2:59 pm

“Why don’t you complain more about the idea that Punto’s taking away major league atbats?”

As long as he hits .256 (like he is now) he deserves the AB’s.
When his BA drops significantly, I will resume squawking, but no one will hear me above the screaming of the other bitchers.

I am trying to come up with a cute little name for Delmon Young, but nothing is coming to mind. Any help?

BC Beneke says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

We have LNP, and as I refer to him as Punterrible.

Booflet, Baby Jesus, Cuddy-duddy, Livon on a prayer, Slee-stack Neshak, Sacrificial Lamb, Go-go,

I call Span “flush”

they have Red-dog
Kubes

What the hell goes with Delmon? because Forever Young is lame as anything ever…

Very frustrating

coco says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:19 pm

Happy birthday Matt Tolbert, he gave himself a double down the 3rd base line!

sane says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

BC,
Appropriate nicknames for Delmon will be difficult to create until he starts to hit like he can.
When he starts to hit some shots and throw bullets from LF, some type of firearm would fit. (ie., cannon, howitzer, rifle, etc.)

coco says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:25 pm

How about, ” Ireallyamyoung”, since he is only 22 also. GoGO is 22 & raw & learning. Shouldn’t Delmon have same excuse/crutch?

coco says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:26 pm

How about “batflip”, although that would be more nasty than cute.

coco says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

The boys are trying to make a game of it in the 7th. Too bad the clear plexi-glass extension no longer on top of left field, GoGo would have tied the game.

coco says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Or, “Imyoungtoo”.

BC Beneke says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

remember that old Christian Guzman promo commercial about him being bionic?

He had NOTHING on Gomez. My god is he fast.

BC Beneke says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:30 pm

Mauer in the clutch??????

No way!

coco says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:34 pm

The boys have taken the lead. All you doom & gloomers in the 1st inning said you now could go do something. WRONG. That’s the beauty of baseball. Even if we end up losing, we made a game of it. Oh, Jim Leyland will have to have a “2-pack” night after the game tonight. He will have to come out smokin’ since the bullpen poured gas on the game.

sy says:

May 4th, 2008 at 3:35 pm

Nickname for Delmon.
“The Demon”

baker looks like one of the best young pitchers in the game.
let’s allow the twins brass to decide who steps in if he has to sit. fair to say they are very smart about the moves they make. they will start the pitcher that gives them the best chance to win.
as for punto, looks like he gives it 100% every day. how many of you do that at work every day? so next time you are doing your usual slack job, think of punto!

BC Beneke says:

May 5th, 2008 at 7:25 am

hew,

We can’t call baker one of the best young pitchers in the game because of the first 3 seasons of coming up, looking like crap, and being sent down, coming back up teasing for a start, looking like crap, and getting sent down…

He seems to have found his niche, but this is now his 5th season of being in and out of the rotation I believe, and from the time his child was born seems to really get it now as to what it takes to be a major league pitcher, but he was very close to being ADAM JOHNSON, Willie Banks, Pat Mahomes, or even more so Pete Filson.
……………….

SY - I love it! Delmon - demon. As in he has demons, and that’s why he is our Pedro Sorronto… “he no hit curveball, bats afraid.”

Mulvey over Perkins
Perkins needs some more time look at his numbers this year.

Lets see if this kids got anything

We already know that Perkins will be good

Original Kevin says:

May 5th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

if Carl was not such a cheapskate, Baker would not be having these groin problems.

Jason says:

May 5th, 2008 at 4:27 pm

Slowey’s rehab has gone well and he’s ready. Perkins is ready, even though he’s yet to go deep into games. Mulvey has struggled of late and he is not on the 40-man roster, unless he starts dominating his only chance is a Sept call-up.

Barney says:

May 5th, 2008 at 5:24 pm

Delmon Young–”Del” of course. And if he doesn’t do well, the farmer in the Del(l) or the cheese stands alone (which you would if you happen to be in your sucking time.

I have hope for the young lad.

And, of course, 5 game winning streak–exceptional.

Yours, Barney

Kelly Kapowski says:

May 6th, 2008 at 1:19 pm

I’ve heard people say that Perkins has yet to pitch deep into games. In his last two starts he pitched into the sixth inning and also threw a complete game 2 hitter in his last start. That’s pretty deep.

shameless says:

May 6th, 2008 at 3:45 pm

I didn’t know that perkins had done that well in his last two starts!

Bring on Glenny!!

Hope he can stay healthy and live up to his potential.

Hopefully he’ll give us something to think about!
