Game begins and Gomez homers after 1 hour, 44-minute delay

Posted on May 7th, 2008 – 6:46 PM
By Joe Christensen

CHICAGO — The White Sox announced that a rain storm is moving into the area, and they expect this game to be delayed until about 7:45 p.m. They expect a 30-45 minute delay.

It’s cloudy and dark here, but there is no rain yet. They are rolling out the tarp now. I blame Brackin.

Stay tuned for updates…

Update (7:20 p.m.): It hasn’t started raining yet, but the game is officially being delayed by rain. Go figure. The head ground keeper here, Roger Bossard, is the one who makes the recommendation. And, to be fair, the skies are getting darker.

I’m sure the teams appreciate not having to get their pitchers warmed up twice.

Update (7:30 p.m.): OK, raining now. Skies are pitch-black.

Update (7:48 p.m.): Absolutely pouring. Haven’t heard any new predictions, but I don’t see this one starting until 8:30 at the earliest.

Update (8:04 p.m.): White Sox just announced another Roger Bossard update. He thinks the rain will stop in about 20 minutes and is hoping to get the game started within the hour. So, the hope is 9 p.m., I guess.

Update (8:30 p.m.): The crowd just cheered. The rain has pretty much stopped.

Update (8:36 p.m.): They are taking off the tarp.

Update (8:51 p.m.): They are exchanging lineup cards. This is going to start in about five minutes.

Update (8:57 p.m.): First pitch was at 8:55. The delay was 1 hour, 44 minutes. They announced that it’s 56 degrees, with winds gusting 16-25 mph. Carlos Gomez homered on the third pitch.

Twins (16-15)

1. Carlos Gomez, CF

2. Brendan Harris, 2B

3. Craig Monroe, DH

4. Justin Morneau, 1B

5. Michael Cuddyer, RF

6. Delmon Young, LF

7. Mike Redmond, C

8. Matt Tolbert, 3B

9. Nick Punto, SS

Starting pitcher: RH Livan Hernandez

White Sox (15-16)

1. Orlando Cabrera, SS

2. Carlos Quentin, LF

3. Jim Thome, DH

4. Paul Konerko, 1B

5. Jermaine Dye, RF

6. A.J. Pierzynski, C

7. Nick Swisher, CF

8. Joe Crede, 3B

9. Juan Uribe, 2B

Starting pitcher: LH Mark Buehrle

U.S. Cellular Field. Scheduled first pitch: 7:11 p.m.

Oh Goodie.
But this is exactly how it’s going to be when we get an outside stadium.

Mike says:

May 7th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

Someone who blogs on such things should keep a running total this year of how many home games would be affected by an open-air stadium. It would be a little more substantive to look back and say if we had an open air stadium last year, there would have been X games affected. It’d also be interesting to compare that tally to other cities with open air stadiums. Surely such data exists. The internet has to be good for something….

La Velle says:

May 7th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Nice! Way to wait until Brackin leaves the office to make it rain!

T says:

May 7th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

So with the game delayed until 7:45, do they have to give some of that sponsorship money back to 7-11?

trinitwin says:

May 7th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

I hope they play. That’s almost my preferred lineup except mauer at #3 and monroe/kubel at #7. Tough defense, speed, and… oh well two out of three ain’t bad! Enjoy the night off Joe, until the eigth inning.

Just updating my name…

Mike Lamb says:

I bet I make you Twins fans miss Tony Batista.

I suck.

TriniTwin says:

May 7th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

oops I hate when I speel wrong, eighth.

Actually feels like you never left :)

snepp says:

May 7th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Someone who blogs on such things should keep a running total this year of how many home games would be affected by an open-air stadium.

I’m going to go out on a limb and say it would have an effect on 81 home games. A dozen or so would be negatively impacted while the remainder would most assuredly be positive.

How many games with nice weather have been ruined by that dome?

Carlos G says:

May 7th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

snepp is absolutely, spot on, hitting the nail on the head, dead center target with that one…

I am tired of all the sissy comments about not having a roof. Get over it already. You are Minnesota fans, not San Diego (I’ve lived both places). Tough’n up a little bit. Sounds like a bunch of pansies for crying out loud.

Most of the games will be beautiful. If you are worried about melting, just go in July. it doesn’t rain then.

TriniTwin says:

May 7th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

When we were kids, we were chucking it around when snow was still on the ground. When it hits forty in march/april it’s a heat wave. The snow birds should just stay south.

TriniTwin says:

May 7th, 2008 at 8:33 pm

This delay has got to be hurting buehrle more than hernandez, but it’s killing me.

Travis Aune says:

May 7th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

anybody know why Luke Hughes came out of the game tonight for New Britain in a close game is he hurt?

Anne says:

May 7th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

“The crowd just cheered. ”

Why did the White Sox fans finally get AC in their trailer parks?

Dustin F says:

May 7th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

YES!!!

No Everett!! The Twins upgrade their defense and offense when he’s not in there…

TriniTwin says:

May 7th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Dustin
No Houston tonight!

I’M TOO LAZY TO CALL SOMEONE ELSE DO IT!!!!

Brock says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:04 pm

I wait two hours for this game and this is what I get??

The Hootie says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Not only is it basketball, it looks like it’s being broadcast in, like, low-def. Like it’s on tape delay from 1988.

Urge to kill…rising…

ML says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:06 pm

They just switched to a commercial. We’ll get the 2nd inning.

Toby says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Finally comcast is an effing joke aholes

Toby says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Alright we’re good

T says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:08 pm

Did I just miss a Gomez homer because Comcast decided I’d like to watch basketball instead?

Brock says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

TV bull crap has made me not be able to see either of gogo’s homeruns this year. The first one cuz it wasnt on tv and the blackout rules are horrible

Erik says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Terrible AB for Young.

TriniTwin says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

why wasn’t young sacrifice bunting?

Jimmy Jam says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:13 pm

I can’t think of anything else I hate more than the NBA.

Jmart says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:14 pm

I don’t think the twins envisioned Young being 181/194 for OPS for the entire MLB when they traded for him

SethSpeaks says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:14 pm

“why wasn’t young sacrifice bunting?”

because it’s the second inning.

BC Beneke says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

T-

That was a great comment on 7-11.

I just got in, reshingling the roof today. So I missed everything. So far.

Jimmy Jam says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

How slow was that pitch, and how fast did Konerko trudge back to the dugout?

TriniTwin says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

a runs a run. remember last night?

BC Beneke says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:17 pm

Jimmy Jam.

Nascar is way worse than the NBA.

Erik says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

because it’s the second inning.

With the way Young is hitting, him sacrificing probably would have worked out better for the Twins.

Jmart says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

NBA>NASCAR>WNBA

Carlos G says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

Sorry, i gotta go with soccer as the worst. I once watched 2 high school soccer games. They both were tied 0-0 after 80 minutes of playing time. Then, they played another 10 of overtime. And, of course, they ended at 0-0. ughhh! Watching guys run up and down the field kicking a ball and never scoring… not so much fun IMO.

thrylos98 says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

If Young’s AB was terrible, what was Redmond’s?

Jimmy Jam says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Brendan Harris had a very good AB. Way to work the count.

DJB says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Has anyone else noticed Ozzie screaming at Twins players when they are out on the field from the dugout? He is such a clown show.

Jmart says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

I don’t have tv…can someone explain how it is possible for mike redmond to get an infield hit?

Austin says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

LNP you suck, there is ABSOLUTELY no excuse for you to not run out a bunt!

LocalHardwareStoreOwner says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

sweet Punto. Great. I thought hustling was your only skill? RUN OUT EVERY BALL.

idiot.

Jmart says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

what did punto do?

Austin says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

Way to pick your teammates up Gomez, thatta boy!

LocalHardwareStoreOwner says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

could’ve been 3-0 right now if Punto had run out his bunt.

No excuse. Bench him tomorrow.

thrylos98 says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Does Smith have the balls to cup Punto? That was the worse pro ball play ever. Double play on a bunt with no outs!

Carlos G says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

jmart… the redmond infield single was a ground ball over the 3rd base bag. The throw was a “jump throw” from about 5 feet behind the bag and in foul territory with not much on it… and off target.

Razz says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Can we start thinking cycle for Gomez? He just completed the hardest part.

GBG says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

So, not watching the game — how is it physically possible to ground into a DP on a bunt?

thrylos98 says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

That was “cut” above :)

Carlos G says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Nicky, no excuse for that one. The one thing I can’t figure out about Nicky is his inability to bunt. With his small game, he has to work on that every day. It’s a simple sac bunt we need.

Jimmy Jam says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

….or we can start thinking Penn Cycle, since there was just a commercial for them.

thrylos98 says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

GBG,

Punto bunts one off the plate and stands there. It was fair. Throw to 3rd, runner out, throw to 1st Punto out. No run, no effort.

Ben says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

Smart play by AJ.

bc twins fan says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

A couple of years ago Castillo bunted into a triple play against chicago on Mother’s day

rebeldream says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

GBG - he bunted it almost straight down and stood there and watched AJ throw to third and didn’t start running until after AJ threw. He was out by a good five steps.

Carlos G says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

jmart, Punto tried a sac bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd. He bunted it straight down, might have hit the plate or next to it, bounced up over his head. AJ fielded it in the air, threw to 3rd while nicky stood at the plate and got thrown out at first. He thought it was foul, and it might have been, but he has to be running.

Razz says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

To send a message to the youngsters they need to sit Punto immediately!

Lala72 says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Carlos, Nicky’s the king of the swinging bunt. Didn’t you see that seven-hopper to third base earlier? That’s Nick bunting.

F*** Nick Punto! It’s obvious Gardy’s back. You know, it’s too bad Gardy and Nick aren’t members of the Angles or A’s. That way, they could get married.

Jimmy Jam says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Very few balls have been hit past the pitcher’s mound tonight.

Carlos G says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Tolbert looks very comfortable and confident at 3b.

Shawn says:

May 7th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

Razz,

bench him because he is terrible…. not just as an example.

Ben says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:00 pm

To be fair that bunt would have probably gone foul if AJ hadn’t jumped at it. He knew he had a play on Redmond at 3rd.

That doesn’t excuse Punto not running though.

DrunkenWildDude says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:00 pm

Punto needs to be on the bench… cut everret and bring up buscher and put him at third and tolbert at short and make lamb a ph/dh/1b

Razz says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:00 pm

Well with Tolbert already playing third we don’t have any options at short that aren’t terrible…

Lala72 says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Cuddy jacks the three-run bomb here.

Lala72 says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Exactly, Drunken!!

Ben says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:02 pm

Dumb move to walk Young.

Razz says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

I agree with you DWD I’d like to see Buscher and Tolbert man the left side for a while to see how it works out.

Carlos G says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

I call this a BIG mistake to walk DY for Red Dog. Make ‘em pay.

DrunkenWildDude says:

dan says:

Isaac says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

it is a pleasure watching livan. this game anyway, he is truly in control. i’m so glad he’s on our team. this kind of pitcher is so frustrating when he’s on the other team.

Razz says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

Come on Punto let’s see some redemption!

DrunkenWildDude says:

Austin says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Thatta boy LNP. You had to redeem yourself and you certainly did. Another knock by Gomez. Let the boo-birds come out in Chi-town.

DrunkenWildDude says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

GOMEZ CYCLE!!!! ONE MORE SINGLE!!!! LOL

Toby says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Lets get him a few more abs to go for the single.

Shawn says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

all Gomez needs is a single

LocalHardwareStoreOwner says:

May 7th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

I don’t care that Punto just drov ein 3, he still needs to sit on the bench tomorrow. You don’t hustle something out, you sit the next day.

Gomez for the cycle?

Gomez is in some pretty impressive company now with that cycle.

LocalHardwareStoreOwner says:

Let’s see Gomez keep his OBP about .330 at the ASB. If it’s below .300….I don’t know.

rebeldream says:

I don’t think I’ve ever heard the Baseball tonight guy so sarcastic. They were just going over the game so far, and he finished it off with “And the Sox have closed it to within 12…”

romer says:

May 7th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

WTF, Guerrier warming up? Where’s Rincon?

Isaac says:

May 7th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

I’m watching the game on the internet so i have to watch it with the sox announcers. When Dye hit the solo home run they still did the “you can put it on the board, YES” thing even though they were still losing by 12 runs. hilarious.

Razz says:

May 7th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

The sox announcers are @$$ clowns…

romer says:

May 7th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

Thanks for the report, Isaac.

I’ve despised The Hawk for at least 15 years. He’s a pathological liar.

thrylos98 says:

May 7th, 2008 at 11:39 pm

Actually, the Sox announcers are much better than other away announcers (I watch the games through mlb.tv so I get exposed to all of them.) Through out the game they were practically deifying Hernandez and Gomez and didn’t have a bad thing to say about any of the Twins’ players. They actually seem to like the Twins’ players and their chances to win the division more some of the local sportswriters… They even went as far as to say that Gomez will win a gold glove one of these days and that he makes the Santana trade justified.

Go(go) figure…

frankie says:

May 7th, 2008 at 11:39 pm

as much hate as there is for punto, is it really that bad having him in there over everett? i mean, at least punto has SOME pop, and can get the rare 5 rbi game. i haven’t seen everett get a nice hit all year. also, with this win, the twins are even now on runs scored and runs allowed for the year (138/138). first place by 1.5 games!

twinsfan32 says:

May 7th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

Poont Dogg!!!!!! 5 rbi’s? i cant believe i just saw that! great game by Livan too.

But the star of the nite…. GOMEZ! way to go Carlos.

Randy says:

May 7th, 2008 at 11:44 pm

I’ve got to agree with Thrylos98. I lived in Chicago for a few years back in the early 90s and at first I could not stand the Hawk. However, he won me over with his constant praising of the Twins and the organization. He has a lot of respect for the Twins, which I appreciate. I still hate to hear him say “put in the board, YES,” when it’s against the Twins, but otherwise, I think he is pretty entertaining to listen to. Great win tonight! Hope we can win the series tomorrow.

Boof@NutriSystem.com says:

May 7th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

I got back in the game, you can too, look alive Marino…

Great game… The season’s success depends on us having a winning record against every central division opponent… 13-7 (.650) so far this season against the division… good start and improvement on last year.

Boof@NutriSystem.com says:

May 7th, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Did the twins end the Alexi Casilla project or did Alexi end the Alexi Casilla Project?

romer says:

May 8th, 2008 at 12:34 am

Last I knew a day or two ago, Casilla had a dead-even .400 OBP with a low BA and 5 errors. So I suppose you could still classify him as having maddening potential.

Who knows, maybe when he comes up to the “Big Leagues” again, Gomez can be to him what Livan has been to Gomez — kind of an anchor to show him the way of calmness and stability.

romer says:

May 8th, 2008 at 12:40 am

Well, I confess my impression and opinion of The Hawk comes from back in the day of Wimpy and him. Always entertaining……unTIL his uncontrollable dis-objectivity would take over. More than a homer, he would become an irrational mouthpiece at the drop of a hat. (And it wasn’t necessarily anything to do with the Twins.)

If he’s changed, I’m glad about that.

Maybe he’s mellowed since the Sox WS win.
