Game begins and Gomez homers after 1 hour, 44-minute delay
Posted on May 7th, 2008 – 6:46 PMBy Joe Christensen
CHICAGO — The White Sox announced that a rain storm is moving into the area, and they expect this game to be delayed until about 7:45 p.m. They expect a 30-45 minute delay.
It’s cloudy and dark here, but there is no rain yet. They are rolling out the tarp now. I blame Brackin.
Stay tuned for updates…
Update (7:20 p.m.): It hasn’t started raining yet, but the game is officially being delayed by rain. Go figure. The head ground keeper here, Roger Bossard, is the one who makes the recommendation. And, to be fair, the skies are getting darker.
I’m sure the teams appreciate not having to get their pitchers warmed up twice.
Update (7:30 p.m.): OK, raining now. Skies are pitch-black.
Update (7:48 p.m.): Absolutely pouring. Haven’t heard any new predictions, but I don’t see this one starting until 8:30 at the earliest.
Update (8:04 p.m.): White Sox just announced another Roger Bossard update. He thinks the rain will stop in about 20 minutes and is hoping to get the game started within the hour. So, the hope is 9 p.m., I guess.
Update (8:30 p.m.): The crowd just cheered. The rain has pretty much stopped.
Update (8:36 p.m.): They are taking off the tarp.
Update (8:51 p.m.): They are exchanging lineup cards. This is going to start in about five minutes.
Update (8:57 p.m.): First pitch was at 8:55. The delay was 1 hour, 44 minutes. They announced that it’s 56 degrees, with winds gusting 16-25 mph. Carlos Gomez homered on the third pitch.

Oh Goodie.
But this is exactly how it’s going to be when we get an outside stadium.
Someone who blogs on such things should keep a running total this year of how many home games would be affected by an open-air stadium. It would be a little more substantive to look back and say if we had an open air stadium last year, there would have been X games affected. It’d also be interesting to compare that tally to other cities with open air stadiums. Surely such data exists. The internet has to be good for something….
Nice! Way to wait until Brackin leaves the office to make it rain!
So with the game delayed until 7:45, do they have to give some of that sponsorship money back to 7-11?
I hope they play. That’s almost my preferred lineup except mauer at #3 and monroe/kubel at #7. Tough defense, speed, and… oh well two out of three ain’t bad! Enjoy the night off Joe, until the eigth inning.
Just updating my name…
I bet I make you Twins fans miss Tony Batista.
I suck.
oops I hate when I speel wrong, eighth.
Mike Lamb
Actually feels like you never left ![]()

I’m going to go out on a limb and say it would have an effect on 81 home games. A dozen or so would be negatively impacted while the remainder would most assuredly be positive.
How many games with nice weather have been ruined by that dome?
snepp is absolutely, spot on, hitting the nail on the head, dead center target with that one…
I am tired of all the sissy comments about not having a roof. Get over it already. You are Minnesota fans, not San Diego (I’ve lived both places). Tough’n up a little bit. Sounds like a bunch of pansies for crying out loud.
Most of the games will be beautiful. If you are worried about melting, just go in July. it doesn’t rain then.
When we were kids, we were chucking it around when snow was still on the ground. When it hits forty in march/april it’s a heat wave. The snow birds should just stay south.
This delay has got to be hurting buehrle more than hernandez, but it’s killing me.
anybody know why Luke Hughes came out of the game tonight for New Britain in a close game is he hurt?
“The crowd just cheered. ”
Why did the White Sox fans finally get AC in their trailer parks?
YES!!!
No Everett!! The Twins upgrade their defense and offense when he’s not in there…
Dustin
No Houston tonight!
Gogo Gone!!!!
Holy Crap!!!!!!!!! Did anyone elses cable just send it to an effing NBA game instead of the twins!!!!???!?!? I AM FREAKKING OUT!!
Brock- yup. NBA playoffs for me, too. What gives?!?!
I am getting TNT too I am a getting a little irritated
SOMEONE CALL!!!!!!!!
Still TNT for me. Comcast is screwing up.
I’M TOO LAZY TO CALL SOMEONE ELSE DO IT!!!!
I wait two hours for this game and this is what I get??
Not only is it basketball, it looks like it’s being broadcast in, like, low-def. Like it’s on tape delay from 1988.
Urge to kill…rising…
They just switched to a commercial. We’ll get the 2nd inning.
This is ridiculous.
What the hell comcast is an effing joke
FINALLY!
Finally comcast is an effing joke aholes
Alright we’re good
Did I just miss a Gomez homer because Comcast decided I’d like to watch basketball instead?
TV bull crap has made me not be able to see either of gogo’s homeruns this year. The first one cuz it wasnt on tv and the blackout rules are horrible
Terrible AB for Young.
why wasn’t young sacrifice bunting?
I can’t think of anything else I hate more than the NBA.
I don’t think the twins envisioned Young being 181/194 for OPS for the entire MLB when they traded for him
“why wasn’t young sacrifice bunting?”
because it’s the second inning.
T-
That was a great comment on 7-11.
I just got in, reshingling the roof today. So I missed everything. So far.
How slow was that pitch, and how fast did Konerko trudge back to the dugout?
a runs a run. remember last night?
Jimmy Jam.
Nascar is way worse than the NBA.
because it’s the second inning.
With the way Young is hitting, him sacrificing probably would have worked out better for the Twins.
NBA>NASCAR>WNBA
Sorry, i gotta go with soccer as the worst. I once watched 2 high school soccer games. They both were tied 0-0 after 80 minutes of playing time. Then, they played another 10 of overtime. And, of course, they ended at 0-0. ughhh! Watching guys run up and down the field kicking a ball and never scoring… not so much fun IMO.
If Young’s AB was terrible, what was Redmond’s?
Brendan Harris had a very good AB. Way to work the count.
Has anyone else noticed Ozzie screaming at Twins players when they are out on the field from the dugout? He is such a clown show.
I don’t have tv…can someone explain how it is possible for mike redmond to get an infield hit?
LNP you suck, there is ABSOLUTELY no excuse for you to not run out a bunt!
sweet Punto. Great. I thought hustling was your only skill? RUN OUT EVERY BALL.
idiot.
what did punto do?
Way to pick your teammates up Gomez, thatta boy!
could’ve been 3-0 right now if Punto had run out his bunt.
No excuse. Bench him tomorrow.
Does Smith have the balls to cup Punto? That was the worse pro ball play ever. Double play on a bunt with no outs!
jmart… the redmond infield single was a ground ball over the 3rd base bag. The throw was a “jump throw” from about 5 feet behind the bag and in foul territory with not much on it… and off target.
Can we start thinking cycle for Gomez? He just completed the hardest part.
So, not watching the game — how is it physically possible to ground into a DP on a bunt?
That was “cut” above ![]()
Nicky, no excuse for that one. The one thing I can’t figure out about Nicky is his inability to bunt. With his small game, he has to work on that every day. It’s a simple sac bunt we need.
….or we can start thinking Penn Cycle, since there was just a commercial for them.
GBG,
Punto bunts one off the plate and stands there. It was fair. Throw to 3rd, runner out, throw to 1st Punto out. No run, no effort.
Smart play by AJ.
A couple of years ago Castillo bunted into a triple play against chicago on Mother’s day
GBG - he bunted it almost straight down and stood there and watched AJ throw to third and didn’t start running until after AJ threw. He was out by a good five steps.
jmart, Punto tried a sac bunt with runners on 1st and 2nd. He bunted it straight down, might have hit the plate or next to it, bounced up over his head. AJ fielded it in the air, threw to 3rd while nicky stood at the plate and got thrown out at first. He thought it was foul, and it might have been, but he has to be running.
To send a message to the youngsters they need to sit Punto immediately!
Carlos, Nicky’s the king of the swinging bunt. Didn’t you see that seven-hopper to third base earlier? That’s Nick bunting.
F*** Nick Punto! It’s obvious Gardy’s back. You know, it’s too bad Gardy and Nick aren’t members of the Angles or A’s. That way, they could get married.
Very few balls have been hit past the pitcher’s mound tonight.
Tolbert looks very comfortable and confident at 3b.
Razz,
bench him because he is terrible…. not just as an example.
To be fair that bunt would have probably gone foul if AJ hadn’t jumped at it. He knew he had a play on Redmond at 3rd.
That doesn’t excuse Punto not running though.
Punto needs to be on the bench… cut everret and bring up buscher and put him at third and tolbert at short and make lamb a ph/dh/1b
Well with Tolbert already playing third we don’t have any options at short that aren’t terrible…
Cuddy jacks the three-run bomb here.
Exactly, Drunken!!
Dumb move to walk Young.
I agree with you DWD I’d like to see Buscher and Tolbert man the left side for a while to see how it works out.
I call this a BIG mistake to walk DY for Red Dog. Make ‘em pay.
damn tigers bot 9th two runs for win
Nice throw swisher. HAHA
You could slide Tolbert to Short and bring in Mikey Punto NEEDS to be benched(obviously its too late) but that is INEXCUSEBALE POOR BASEBALL
it is a pleasure watching livan. this game anyway, he is truly in control. i’m so glad he’s on our team. this kind of pitcher is so frustrating when he’s on the other team.
Come on Punto let’s see some redemption!
you hear the chisox fans and prob twinky fans jeer punto lol excellent stuff
Why is not Punto pinch hit for with bases loaded and 2 outs?
There get off the guys back
PUNTO!!!!!!!!!
well he does redeem himself
and folks - adam everetts days are starting to dwindle as a twin
Hooray for Punto!
A little redemption for LNP!
redemption of the punto
Gomez is looking for the cycle!
My jaw just broke from hitting the floor!! Way to make up for it Nicky!
Thatta boy LNP. You had to redeem yourself and you certainly did. Another knock by Gomez. Let the boo-birds come out in Chi-town.
GOMEZ CYCLE!!!! ONE MORE SINGLE!!!! LOL
Lets get him a few more abs to go for the single.
all Gomez needs is a single
I don’t care that Punto just drov ein 3, he still needs to sit on the bench tomorrow. You don’t hustle something out, you sit the next day.
Gomez for the cycle?
Quentin and Swisher looked like a couple of clowns out there.
I wonder if Punto feels a little vindication right now?
Way to go making up for your dumbass mistake
OK!!! I’m going to go ahead and say it. PUNTO IS BACK!
That Gomez, let’s send him to Rochester, or at least bat him 9th…
Gomez driving up that OPS
No way is this happening. What is comcast doing
You gotta be kidding me. Now we have more NBA playoffs on FSN.
Ack! Not the NBA again!
TNT NBA…..sweet.
Burls was pissed
No way, Kobe Bryant just transformed into Harris.
Looks like we didn’t miss much
f’ing comcast and nba
Wait a second, Kobe wouldn’t K.
I think Dotel is wearing Chuck Taylors
glad i have Directv
Does Buehrle have anger management issues? LOL
Does Buehrle have anger management issues?
Yes, he can’t stand his manager.
Buerhle should be mad that they had him walk Delmon Young.
I’m surprised Delmon didn’t swing at any of those pitches.
Buerhle should be mad at Comcast.
Does anybody remember who played centerfield last year…its on the tip of my tongue but I can’t come up with it…I don’t think it was Gomez, but who???
its too high
Nice outing tonight by Livan. Don’t think it is a coincidence that if the Twins can hold on tonight they will be 4-1 when Gardy is away from the team.
was it Matt Lawton? did he play CF last year?
Bobby Kielty was it??
I think it was Jason Tyner.
Nope had to be Rich Becker.
I think Tyner played a couple games in CF
Dotel’s spikes are just ridiculous. I thought these guys care about how they look?
Comcast sucks tonight
I know. I wish they would at least give us a split screen with the NBA game on the other half.
Just tonight? How’s the BigTen network treating ya?
That’s funny. Can’t remember who played CF last year…
yeah…
c’mon, it was, er…
When did Jaques Jones leave?
Big Ten Network has been great. ![]()
Alex Cole for sure
Oh wait, Tyner was our regular DH.
Otis Nixon
Richard Nixon
Hey, did you know Livan was a control-type pitcher?
Gomez reminded me of somebody with that dive.
Well who ever the CF was I wish he would have gone to the sux so he could witness this performance tonight!
Whatever happened to Otis? he was a good looking young player.
No I didn’t play CF for the Twins last year.
Jimmy Jam says:
May 7th, 2008 at 10:34 pm
Richard Nixon
otis nixon looked as old as richard nixon
Otis Nixon was/is on the “All Ugly Team”
Swisher’s going to need some more blow-up dolls.
Hernandez 12 consecutive scoreless innings
I think that Buerhle took care of the dolls tonight.
nice rebound game from last nite ….good nite for just about everyone…maybe gomez gets the cycle..lol…gotta like those lead off homeruns………..great outing for livan, as he is becoming the ace, as hard as that is to imagine but hes been great….close this one out and get another one tomorrow…then 4 tough ones at home with the $$$$red sox…..should be fun…there will be no rain outs..
who else is on the all ugly team? I would nominate scottie pippen
dirk nowitzski
my favorite old time twins from the ole black and white era #7 lenny green cf leadoff hitter…anyone remember him??
wish those fsn classic twins replays would go back and pick up some of those games from the 60s ..damn that would be fun to watch more so than these games from 2 years ago …who cares about them…
patrick ewing
So if Gomez hits a ball to the gap does he stop at first?
Gomez will bunt for a single…
sam cassell
what a nite if gomez can get the cycle and livan a shutout….
i always thought sam cassell looked like an alien
Hooray for Gomez!
CYCLE!!!!! Nice Job GOGO
CYCLE!
HR-3B-2B-1B
Weird order!
good job kid!
cycle
Latest Strib report — Slowey is ready to go.
Strib reporters bored?
What about Sir Gomez’s cycle!?
And THeRE IT IS!!!!!!!!!!
sam casell looks like ET
I wonder if Joe C still wants Gomez sent down?
nice, is he the first since puckett?
ugley, but what the hell its good enuf–good job
gomez needs a stolen base
Who was the last Twin to get the cycle?
Wow! Cycle is pretty cool. The trade is looking better and better.
Where’s the baseball?
Gomez is in some pretty impressive company now with that cycle.
Let’s see Gomez keep his OBP about .330 at the ASB. If it’s below .300….I don’t know.
Twins are up by 7 in the 9th - sending Gomez would be bad form.
too bad gardy wasnt back to witness this from gomez ….
Nice job Carlos. It was great to see how excited the Twins’ bench was for the kid. That tells you a lot too. What a fun kid. Hopefully, somebody to watch for about 15 years.
gomez needs a stolen base
Yeah, and then he’ll get a fastball in the rib cage tomorrow afternoon.
Mike Cubbage, Gary Ward, et al.
Move it on ove’r
Say move it on ove’r
Move it on ove’r
Cuz the the Big Go’s….BACK IN TOWN!!!
i have no cable. all i see is “infield single to shortstop.”
so was it a clean hit?
Way to Go Carlos keep up the good work, lots of potential in this kid
Okay MVP. PAD THE STATS!!!!!!
once this kid gets some discipline and grows up a bit, look out…there is no ceiling…..
It was a clean “Gomez” hit, mickey mental. He was gonna beat it out, but a bad, hurried throw almost made it “dirty”.
So if any dirt, it was Chisox dirt.
EEeeeeeYESSSSSSS!!!!!!
that damn vavra is a helluva coach dont you all think ….tip your hat to vavra
Vavra pads the stats
Ooooooo, here comes the clown-dufoss.
mickey, it was clean. probably headed up the middle, but pitcher slows it down and then ss can’t make the play.
Can somebody please make an out? I need to get some work done.
textbook redmond
Redmond scats to 2nd.
He got the Gomez fever………!!!!!
thx all. fun time to follow the twins, even long distance without cable.
hahaha weren’t you guys calling for gomez’ head here a few weeks ago??
Okay Biggie Nic Punto — a little single to make it the lucky 13-0.
Punto 5 rbi
5 RBIS for LNP - like i said…adam everett will be designated for assignment sooner than later (Not saying I agree) but you heard it here first!
You ain’t listenin’ Punto-Bird. Just a frickin’ single!!! Can’t you do anything right!!??!!!!
5 RBI’s for Punto??? I don’t know what to say. I really don’t.
crazy as hell.
i dont think most of us was calling for gomez’s head but merely a couple of days off which he got,im with the same people that agree even though punto has 5 rbi’s tonight he still has to start on the bench……
When’s the free Nick Punto blog going to start up!?!
keep those left handers coming …i like this lineup the next few days……
Punto as a bench player works the best
Gomez starts and Gomez finishes the inning. He just wants to be the center of everything. ![]()
Hey Austin — have you ever been a f**k-up and a hero at the same time?
Pretty damned hard to do, compadre….
Ee-Sheeeezzzza!!
Pray to God this isn’t the peak of the Twins season.
How about some love for Livan? Especially if he finishes off the CGSO.
Ok. My bad. Jinxed him.
1 run. Keep those blow-up dolls working, Guinius.
I don’t think I’ve ever heard the Baseball tonight guy so sarcastic. They were just going over the game so far, and he finished it off with “And the Sox have closed it to within 12…”
WTF, Guerrier warming up? Where’s Rincon?
I’m watching the game on the internet so i have to watch it with the sox announcers. When Dye hit the solo home run they still did the “you can put it on the board, YES” thing even though they were still losing by 12 runs. hilarious.
The sox announcers are @$$ clowns…
Gooodnight!
Twins 13
Dufus-Clowns 1
Thanks for the report, Isaac.
I’ve despised The Hawk for at least 15 years. He’s a pathological liar.
Actually, the Sox announcers are much better than other away announcers (I watch the games through mlb.tv so I get exposed to all of them.) Through out the game they were practically deifying Hernandez and Gomez and didn’t have a bad thing to say about any of the Twins’ players. They actually seem to like the Twins’ players and their chances to win the division more some of the local sportswriters… They even went as far as to say that Gomez will win a gold glove one of these days and that he makes the Santana trade justified.
Go(go) figure…
as much hate as there is for punto, is it really that bad having him in there over everett? i mean, at least punto has SOME pop, and can get the rare 5 rbi game. i haven’t seen everett get a nice hit all year. also, with this win, the twins are even now on runs scored and runs allowed for the year (138/138). first place by 1.5 games!
Poont Dogg!!!!!! 5 rbi’s? i cant believe i just saw that! great game by Livan too.
But the star of the nite…. GOMEZ! way to go Carlos.
I’ve got to agree with Thrylos98. I lived in Chicago for a few years back in the early 90s and at first I could not stand the Hawk. However, he won me over with his constant praising of the Twins and the organization. He has a lot of respect for the Twins, which I appreciate. I still hate to hear him say “put in the board, YES,” when it’s against the Twins, but otherwise, I think he is pretty entertaining to listen to. Great win tonight! Hope we can win the series tomorrow.
I got back in the game, you can too, look alive Marino…
Great game… The season’s success depends on us having a winning record against every central division opponent… 13-7 (.650) so far this season against the division… good start and improvement on last year.
Did the twins end the Alexi Casilla project or did Alexi end the Alexi Casilla Project?
Last I knew a day or two ago, Casilla had a dead-even .400 OBP with a low BA and 5 errors. So I suppose you could still classify him as having maddening potential.
Who knows, maybe when he comes up to the “Big Leagues” again, Gomez can be to him what Livan has been to Gomez — kind of an anchor to show him the way of calmness and stability.
Well, I confess my impression and opinion of The Hawk comes from back in the day of Wimpy and him. Always entertaining……unTIL his uncontrollable dis-objectivity would take over. More than a homer, he would become an irrational mouthpiece at the drop of a hat. (And it wasn’t necessarily anything to do with the Twins.)
If he’s changed, I’m glad about that.
Maybe he’s mellowed since the Sox WS win.
Does this mean I can take a day off from defending Vavra?
I actually have opinions on other subjects that no one wants to read.
