Neshek leaves game with elbow injury
Posted on May 8th, 2008 – 4:02 PMBy Joe Christensen
CHICAGO — Twins reliever Pat Neshek left today’s game in the eighth inning with an apparent arm injury. Brian Bass has taken his place.
Neshek delivered a pitch to Chicago’s Joe Crede and then grimaced. When trainer Rick McWane and third base coach Scott Ullger came to the mound to check on Neshek, he appeared to point to his right forearm.
Stay tuned for updates.
Update (4:12 p.m.): Neshek was diagnosed with a right elbow strain. He will be re-evaluated on Friday.

Hope he’s alright…
injury situation is starting to get out of hand..has to stop now or???……..
BASS FISHING TIME
Didn’t see it, but does anyone think we’re looking at Neshek to DL and Perkins coming up instead of Korecky heading down?
What about Mulvey coming up
korecky who was heading down may now just stay up….not a good situation……
mulvey has been awful lately not the time to bring him up
error should be on morneau for gods sake not on tolbert….morneau just looked lazy- he definately needs a day off on the bench…
Straight error on Morneau. But they give it to Tolbert for now. Ball never touched the ground.
Again, FSN reports that Neshek felt a pop in his elbow. Looks to me like it radiated down his arm.
oh no thats not good
Of course the crappy game like this has to go over 3 hours…….
Interesting factoid:
Twins record with Nicky starting: 14-6;
If we lose today:
Twins record with Nicky not starting: 3-10
Perkins is coming up to pitch on Sunday, I believe.
well at least they will go home still in 1st place and cleveland lost today too- so all is not totally bad—but the injury situation could become critical if neshek is out for some time and rincon not sharp
Weird Twins pitching today. They struggled but remained competitive, getting out of a lot of jams. But there were a lot of balls thrown right down the middle.
Probably a manic-depression thing for the whole team after last night’s high.
Man, hope Sideshow is ok!
OK, I apologize. I did the factoid a little too quickly. Those were games in which Nicky played, not necessarily started.
Are we desperate enough to take a flyer on Turnbow?
this mornings happy face turned down suddenly.
with rincon bad and tin man maybe hurt who is looking good in aaa?
“Are we desperate enough to take a flyer on Turnbow?”
No, a lot of our guys in the minors are doing ok. we can try any of them (gomez, lahey, korecky,).
Punto doesn’t play and we’re 5 rbi’s short. He’s the real person we need to be concerned about being injured. He was just hitting his stride!
Those Nick Punto appearance records are obvious. He was often inserted into the lineup at near the end of games as a defensive replacement, which is a good role for him, so of course the record with him in the lineup is going to be good. He still sucks as an overall player regardless.
I think Mariano Gomez would be a nice addition to the pen. He’s pitched very well so far this season at Rochester. Ricky Barrett and Casey Daigle could also be decent candidates to be recalled.
Sounds like someone is judging Punto on last years numbers instead of this years reality. What is he batting, around .265? Better than our “starters” that he’s replacing late in innings. But I forgot, there will be no stating “I was wrong” on this blog. Or better yet, let’s bash Punto because “he won’t keep playing decent. He’ll return to the crappy player we all know he is”. I know, he probably faked his injury today so he wouldn’t screw up today!!
as long as casey brings his wife, saw her throw a few pitchs on tv and she was throwing harder than livan a few times.
do we have what it takes to be in these talks if they happen?
ESPN’s Buster Olney makes a point to say that this trade idea is pure speculation rather than anything he’s heard. Still worth discussing. Here it is:
If Colorado eventually turns the page on 2008, the Indians and the Rockies could match up well in a deal built around Garrett Atkins. The Rockies have a third baseman waiting in the wings, in Ian Stewart — although he is not faring well so far — and the Indians, as they look for ways to improve their offense, are flexible at first and third base.
I judge Punto on his career pro baseball numbers, which suck. He had an outlier season two years ago and even then he had no power. He isn’t as bad a hitter as he was last year, but he is by no means a good hitter and he isn’t as good defensively as many think. He has a decent batting average this year so far in fairly few plate appearances. It means nothing.
Greg well said!
as a utility guy he is fine as a starter not so much.
Sorry for the earlier misleading post. Here is the real factoid on Nicky:
His role in Twins wins is obvious:
Nicky starts: Twins 9-5
Nicky doesn’t start: Twins 8-11
Projected:
Nicky starts the rest of the year and Twins end up with 100 wins (65% of remaining 129 games)
Nicky doesn’t start the rest of the year and Twins end up with 71 wins (42% of remaining games)
If you seriously want a playoff team, there is only one answer… start Nicky every day.
(Appropriate and correct use of statistics for blog world, imo.)
Carlos kind of small sample how do those numbers look from last year?
I don’t live in the past.
funny all the vavra supporters are still living in 2006. nice to pick which stats (time frame) to use,
if you ask the question right you can get the answer you want.
UPDATE on Neshek. Gardy said something “rolled over” in his elbow, whatever that means.
Still not good, but not necessarily catastrophic. You tell me, a ligament strain?
I am neither a Vavra supporter or hater. I think it is relatively easy to blame failure on someone else and claim success as your own. Doesn’t make it true and doesn’t make it false. Just an easy way to go. You know it is entirely possible that Vavra is the smartest hitting coach on earth. And, it is equally possible he can’t teach or communicate squat.
Vavra-bashers give no credit to him in a 13 run game and blame him for shutouts. I do neither. Vavra-bashers would show consistency if they gave both credit and blame to the same guy for success and failure for all the Twins hitting; not just in their losses.
I can’t wait until Punto is off the team so we don’t have to discuss whether he is good or bad anymore.
That was a bad day offensively! What were there…11 strike outs? The Twins have been holding their head above water without any power what so ever. I was amazed at where the Twins batting average rated with the rest of the American League teams though (3rd)!
Pinch hitting Lamb was a worthless cause; geez, he’s bad!
Maybe the herky jerky pitching style that Neshek has puts a lot of strain on his arm (especially in cold weather)! Is it ever going to warm up? I don’t even think most trees have their leaves out yet; by the time they come out, they will turn colors and fall off for fall!
Bring up the Aussie! He plays third and outfield!
OBP SLG AVG
.308 .304 .264 - Young
.314 .358 .248 - Harris
.254 .385 .239 - Kubel
.224 .272 .207 - Lamb
.321 .347 .265 - Punto
Punto hasn’t played much, but he has done a respectable job, so far.
