Young doesn’t expect to miss a game

Posted on May 12th, 2008 – 8:54 PM
By Joe Christensen

Twins left fielder Delmon Young left tonight’s game against Boston in the ninth inning after rolling his left foot on the basepaths in the eighth.

Young took his position for warmups before the ninth inning, but Jason Kubel took his place. Young did run off the field briskly, not showing any signs of pain.

Updates to come…

Update: Young said he expects to play Tuesday against Toronto. He said he had most of his weight on his other leg, so rolling his left foot didn’t hurt as much as it might have looked. He did have the left ankle wrapped however, and the Twins will see how he feels before Tuesday’s game.

Was it his foot, or ankle?

JP says:

looked like his ankle got twisted up. cleats got caught in the turf.

lamb with three double plays and no hits. ouch.

like the move by gardy getting Nathan up and warming up.

Delmon Should Be ok, being that he was running off the field not showing any pain, hell be alright, good call by Gardy to take him out as a precaution

We need Delmon and Mauer both healthy.

If we didnt have both of them in the lineup, where would we get all our singles from?

nothing wrong with singles. in fact, a person has to look pretty hard to find fault. been quite a 1/4 of a season for the twins. who woulda thunk?

Young will be sore tomorrow. Gardy says he does NOT like to sit on the bench. I think he should to lite a little fire under him. This would be a good opportunity.

It happens to every athlete, he’ll be fine.

Jason says:

I believe the odds are heavily in favor of Young not playing tomorrow for two reasons:

1. Look at the Twins’ history in these types of situations–they always err on the side of caution

2. Jason Kubel has sat since Saturday…

JDW says:

May 12th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Also, I believe Young is 1st or 2nd in consecutive games started among active players.

Jason says:

May 12th, 2008 at 10:08 pm

Is that right JDW? Should Cal Ripken, Jr. start to get nervous?

Well, I think he was going to be borderline on playing tomorrow regardless until he came up with 2 hits….you have to figure he’s going to sit during this stretch at some point so Kubel can get some playing time…you cannot sit Craig Monroe, who is emerging as a real everyday DH possibility.

Hey guys, 3 of 4 from Boston is a BIG deal. The Twins have enough depth to rest DY for one day, its not the end of the world.

RyanW says:

While Young is experiancing his sophomore slump, I do have to give the guy a lot of credit for his desire to play every day. I think that he is a gamer, and we will see that more of that when he starts to mature a little as a man.

Nice series twins.

The Twins will reach and surpass the quarter-season mark on Thursday. Let’s see if they’re still in 1st place.

Young has needed a sitting for a few games now. I think it’d do him good for multiple reasons.

Sit him for a game, get Kubel a few ABs in LF and let Monroe keep DHing for now.

Joe says:

dude, why can’t we just sit him for a game, though he is hitting singles up the middle he hadn’t done much until lately even with that, he has been average at best in LF and Kubel needs to get at-bats…. Give him a day off, I think he needs it….

I woke up, couldn’t sleep. I realized it was May 13th, and we have a 1&1/2 game lead. That means we’ll still be in sole possesion of 1st place on May 14th. How’s that for Minnesota math Bert?
HAVE FUN!!! GO TWINS!!!

It’s in the Twins best interest to rest Young for the next game and allow Kubel to shake some rust off. Toronto is terrible, and Young needs to get his head on straight.

I feel horrible saying this, but he needs to start listening to the coaches (vavra included), and stop listening to his old man. Just because he could create two major league hitters doesn’t mean he knows a damn thing about facing a major league pitcher!

T says:

May 13th, 2008 at 7:06 am

If they can’t sit Young, would it be beneficial to juggle the lineup a bit so he DHs? I don’t know how Monroe looks in LF…

GENO says:

May 13th, 2008 at 7:57 am

bc-You are actually giving Vavra some credit!Of course scoring 7 runs a game will do that. When they are back to scoring 3 runs a game, you will be calling for his head again.

BC,

“I feel horrible saying this, but he needs to start listening to the coaches (vavra included)”

AMAZING!!
However,in the spirit of rebirth and admission of past mistakes, I must admit that I thought the signing of Livan was nuts based on his steadily deteriorating stats and ballooning ERA.

I admit was wrong and obviously, I did not have a clue.

Holy crap, that felt good!!!

Why don’t the Twins try using Redmond at DH for a game or two. Redmond is great and much better then Kubel. Another thing last night was that a Cuddy magic trick catch

Anthony Lapanta says:

Last night as I was heading in the direction of home after the game I noticed a squirrel that with just a huge tuft of hair. I was driving down a frontage road at the time of the incident. Well since it was in the middle of the road and my old dead squirrel was getting a bit ragged. I decided to run over the squirrel and take it home to taxidermy and wear atop my head. I needed to get rid of oldie the previous dead squirrel that I wore.

gobbledygookguy says:

smoke and mirrors! i think cuddy maybe gave livan some magic tricks to use before the season started. if he can hang in there and not revert back to what he was the last couple years he should be worth a decent prospect this summer, assuming the indians continue to move up and past. of course we could hang in there if the tigers, sox and royals continue to play bad.
feel real bad with how the yannkees are playing, wonder if hank would like to re-think his trade offers now?

Carlos G says:

hey, JimmyBee, it’s Tuesday and the Twins are still in 1st place. I think you wanted someone to let you know after the Boston series where we were.

Carlos G says:

May 13th, 2008 at 9:18 am

That was a sweet game last night. I was at the game, next to Redmond. He is starting to look and sound bored. Before he streaks the clubhouse again, or worse, the field… we need to get him some playing time. I think the new “iron-man” Mauer needs to get out of the crouch position for a game. My ideal lineup has Mauer DH and Redmond Catching tonight. I think I will play the hot hand Monroe in LF.

Carlos G I was completely underestimating the Twins and I am a man of my word. I was wrong and thank you for bringing that to my attention. I still think Kubel should go go go

Great tidbit from Charley Walters “DON’T PRINT THAT” today..

“Twins catcher Joe Mauer probably could hit 30 home runs a season with a minor swing adjustment, but that also could result in 100 strikeouts a season.”

Wow. You’re right Chuck. You shouldn’t have printed that. That has to be one of the dumbest things I’ve ever read in a sports column outside of Sid’s work.

Thanks for the laugh Chucky!!!

JimCrikket says:

May 13th, 2008 at 9:55 am

wow… all that with a “minor” swing adjustment, huh?

You simply don’t go from a
“gap to gap” hitter to a “turn on it” pull-hitting HR hitter (which is almost required to get 30 HRs) with a “minor swing adjustment”.

I’m fine with Mauer hitting the ball to all fields and hitting .330 without the HRs. Do I think he’s more suited to the #2 spot, than hitting 3rd? Yeah, probably. But until someone else steps up and demonstrates they’re a more consistent option for #3, I’m ok with things as they are… without that “minor swing adjustment”. Sheesh.

The New and Improved Craig says:

Although I would still send Young, Pridie, and Harris, back to the Rays for Garza in a heartbeat, I have really come to like Delmon Young.

It is interesting to note that LF has not provided a single HR this year. Ditto, 3B and catcher. Considered power positions by some, they have contributed zero to the HR totals, which, in reality, is all you need.

You just gotta be happy for Livan - I loved it when he stabbed that line drive and then spiked it! I think we should stop complaining about Mauer not hitting home runs and applaude his batting average and superb defense. We’ve got other guys to hit home runs and it looks like we’re starting to see some dividends from the Craig Monroe acquisition. Go Twins!

That sounds credible coming from a poster that never stops complaining.
The weather, the job, the state, the Twins and all their players stink.
But WTF, Mauer misses games when he’s injured - WTF with that?

Yes indeed. Also, the great job he’s done batting third, where he truly belongs.
