Gomez sick for series finale against Toronto
Posted on May 15th, 2008 – 10:13 AMBy Joe Christensen
Carlos Gomez, Joe Mauer and Mike Lamb are not in the Twins’ starting lineup for today’s matinee against Toronto.
Updates to come…
Update (11:15 a.m.): Gomez has the flu. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Gomez might be available as a late-game defensive replacement, but he was throwing up and didn’t sleep well last night.
Mauer and Lamb are getting routine days off with a day game after a night game.
Scott Baker’s bullpen session went well, and he will leave Friday for Fort Myers, Fla., where he’ll throw two bullpen sessions and likely pitch in an extended spring training game next Thursday. He has been on the DL with a strained right groin.
Update (2:15 p.m.): The Twins have acquired Blue Jays minor league infielder Sergio Santos and sent him to Class AAA Rochester. Santos fills the spot opened when Alexi Casilla was promoted to the big leagues. Santos, 24, was Arizona’s first-round pick (No. 27 overall) in the 2002 draft. He batted .186 in in 26 games for Class AAA Syracuse this year.
Update (2:45 p.m.): Gomez replaced Craig Monroe as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning. It’s 2-2.
Blue Jays (20-22)
1. Brad Wilkerson, RF
2. Aaron Hill, 2B
3. Alex Rios, CF
4. Scott Rolen, 3B
5. Kevin Mench, LF
6. Shannon Stewart, DH
7. Lyle Overbay, 1B
8. Rod Barajas, C
9. Marco Scutaro, SS
Starting pitcher: RH Dustin McGowan
Twins (20-19)
1. Matt Tolbert, 3B
2. Brendan Harris, 2B
3. Jason Kubel, DH
4. Justin Morneau, 1B
5. Michael Cuddyer, RF
6. Craig Monroe, CF
7. Delmon Young, LF
8. Mike Redmond, C
9. Adam Everett, SS
Starting pitcher: LH Glen Perkins
Metrodome. First pitch: 12:10 p.m.

I’d rather have seen Young sit if they were going to get Kubel and Monroe both in today.
Nice to see they left Stairs out.
can somebody please relay the message to gomez that when he has 2 strikes, he’s not going to get anything remotely close to the strike zone? therefore it’s pointless to swing. it’ll be nice for him to get a day off…
please don’t get swept by the jays. to take 3 of 4 from boston and then lay a turd against toronto will be demoralizing
i agree on young
In an article I read in the PPress about a recent interaction between Young and Joe Vavra, Young comes across as an arrogant jerk. His hitting performance doesn’t warrant a consecutive-game streak. Sit his ass and let him think about it for a day.
Hope Perkins has his good stuff again!
This is a team that it would be OK to leave Perkins out their for 7-8 innings if he’s having a good game. Leaving him in to face the Redsox in the 7th was just stupid!
Had Gardy made the switch we MAY have swept the commysox!
I like giving Gomez a day to sit (2 strikeouts each in the last two games). I would have given it to Delmon too. Why hasn’t Gardy done with Delmon what he has done with everyone else (if you mess up really bad, you sit the next day)?
I said I wouldn’t be one of these guys but I can’t help it anymore. The hitting is just too terrible to watch.
EVERETT AND PUNTO SUCK AND MUST GO!!
ps VAVRA TOO( I BLAME YOUNGS TRYING TO TAKE EVERYTHING THE OTHERWAY AND CONSEQUENTLY NO HOMERS ON THE HITTING COACH….THIS IS THE SAME PROBLEM BIG POPPY HAD WITH THE TWINS….JUST LET SOME GUYS TRY TO PULL THE BALL PLEASE!!WE NEED HOMERS NOW!
This is exactly what people have been clamoring for Gardy to do with all of his young players, play them and let play through their struggles. Now we want Gardy to sit them? Let him hit his way out of this. By the way, with Monroe in CF do you really want Kubel in LF? that would be some dog crap Defense.
Nice to see Kubel get a shot in the #3 spot.
cool… though gomez is doing fine he should have walked if it wasnt for the ump changed his strike zone….
young is doing fine… went 2-4 i believe and just made a running mistake… otherwise he’s fine…
lamb has to go…. he ruined 3 rally trys yesterday….
and casilla should only be a pinch runner .. he looks lost at the plate…
(nice arm though) (though still too many mental errors.. like not catching that ball in the first…)

Vomit with great force. Tear off the T-Shirt and take a restroom break
liondragon - Young is last among all LFers in all of MLB in OPS. He is not doing fine.
Casilla is 1 year older than Young, not sure why Young keeps getting a pass and Casilla is the worst thing ever.
If Young was not recently traded for, I think he might be sent down and Span would be given a chance. But, from a PR perspective, it just can’t happen.
Why is everyone so obsessed with the long ball? Don’t get me wrong, everybody likes a home run now and then, but watching Kubel hitting ropes to the gap in left center is great too.
Oddly, I like this lineup…let’s hope Kubes and Monroe BOTH produce.
Did anyone hear Bert last night say that Lamb has the 5th best fielding percentage in the AL at 3rd base. When he is not hitting that great he has a great glove. I think his hitting will turn around soon.
Matt Lawton,
Are you trying to call the ghost of Joey Jo Jo Shabadu?

Matt Lawton,

Got to eat a bucket of chicken on the throan and tear off the shirt every time I hear Kubel
I would have to say Gomez is getting a better eye at the plate with each and every AB. I really loved Morneau’ HR last night off of Roy. I really did not realize just how tall Roy was. Both Lackey from the Angels and Roy from Toronto are huge. Also Lamb’ defense is really Better than I expected.
Wow Gardy must have read Howards blog today i mentioned earlier that they should give Kubes a shot in Mauers spot. I like this lineup but they should have saved Casilla for this game and started Everett last night.
Hey BC hows it going over there? I can’t wait till 12:10. Hopefully the Twins can pull this one out and avoid the sweep. Gooooo Twins
when I was 22 I used to get the “flu” sometimes and be up all night and end up throwing up…………
Goooooo CharlieMurphy. Goooo Twins
hi ya jimmy lets hope we can get at least this one today.
Charlie i haven’t had the flu since i was in 3rd grade. I think a lot of these “flu” type symptoms might be self induced.
Prediction: Twins will sent CarGo to Arizona League and he will Kubel his knee.
BC have you ever heard of a ball player named Walter Young who played for the Orioles. If not look him up. I am trying to look for the heaviest, tallest, shortest and ugliest ball players ever…..
Since Brendan Harris has trouble turning the double play but bats okay and Lamb continues to struggle at the plate, which is the only reason he’s on the team, what about putting Tolbert at 2B and switching Harris to 3B. Wasn’t the original thinking on Harris that he was going to play 3B?
Holy crap thats a big boy jimmy. I’m going to say he’s easly the heaviest and Randy Johnson is the Tallest and ugliest hands down.
I like this line-up too. Hope Perkins is on today.
The tallest bb player ever is Jon Rauch at 6′11 just one inch taller then Randy Johnson.
charlie reliford already making up for brian runge last night…
Don Mossi might just be the ugliest player ever edging out you know who? Yes, uglier then Randy Johnson
wow…way to charlie reliford!
Ah. Gomez is sick. Well, that would pretty much make it impossible to bench Young today.
Hopefully Gomez gets better in time for the Rockies series.
Wow, according to Gameday, Perkins threw 19 pitches that inning and only one was a change up.
The other 18 were fastballs.
Interesting, I don’t normally follow pitch selection…so I’ll ask if that’s normal.
Getting back to ugly now. If Don Mossi and Otis Nixon were to get into a steel cage fight I can’t even think of first how ugly it would be and second off who would win.
Lamb needs to get a day off ANY game after a night game.
Umpire is HORRIBLE!!!!!
T do you know what ever happened to Chris Sabo and all that potential that never panned out. I remember he was at one time supposed to be one of the great ones playing with the Reds
“Don Mossi might just be the ugliest player ever edging out you know who? Yes, uglier then Randy Johnson”
Check the mirror.
Does anyone remember Chris Sabo forgetting to zip up his fly. I think his career ended after that event
That is not very nice matt lawton. I would have to say I am just a split hair nicer looking then Don Mossi
jimmy check out this link and scroll down to the pic of Ezequiel Astacio.
Why do baseball get the flu so much? Can’t they take flu shots before Opening day?
football players get the “flu” too. They just dont do it the night before a game
“Why do baseball get the flu so much? Can’t they take flu shots before Opening day?”
Why do pro athletes have so many illegitimate children? Have they never heard of Trojan?
Flu? You try drinking a bottle of Patron and see if you can avoid the “flu”.
Mickey Mantle played with the “flu” his whole career.
Mickey had a particularly contagious strand of the flu, as it got teammate Billy Martin as well.
I’m guessing based on Gameday that was Everett being unable to turn a DP. I can’t imagine Rolen is that quick…
Twins fans are catching up to me on Delmon Young. He doesn’t represent what the Twins stand for.Tom Kelly wouldn’t have him on his team. Delmon has no discipline, he misses the cut off man, and he is a arrogant person, Why put him in the locker room? no power at the plate, and he struggles to pull the ball, and i blame Bill Smith for putting Young on this team, bad move, even if Young starts hitting, why put him in the locker room????
Chances are looking good that the “B” Squad is going to get shutout today. Every once in a while they suprise me but Im not feeling it today.
BC good gosh what happened to Ezequiel Astacio’ face. Ishi, ishi, ish.
BC that is even worse of a complexion then Benito Santiago. I just got back from lunch and almost lost my turkey and cheese sandwich with your link
That’s one way to score a run…
I know that’s a face that only a mother could love but then again.
haha…one run without even getting a hit yet.
God a hate when Gordo does that.
I have a feeling thats going to be the story line for this season. Swing and a drive to deep right field and it hooks foul. Dirty words, dirty words and more dirty words.
GRRR. Morneau with a drawn out AB and Cuddy goes out on two pitches.
Cuddy killing another rally for us
Cuddyer needs to be moved…he doesn’t do a good job protecting Morneau.
TK also wouldn’t have a Ortiz, do we really need a TK
Monroe could probably do it if he stays hitting like he has the last series or so.
Young is SUPPOSED to be doing that. But neither he or Cuddy wants to step up at the moment.
So I had to pick a hair style to improve my look using should I try the Anthony Lapanta look or the Roy Smalley look
If a guy ain’t got it by May 15th, ol’ TK says ship em out
Oh, the LaPanta is a classic, jimmy bee. Can’t go wrong there. I can sell you an old squirrel
This team could use a Randy Bush or Gene Larkin in left instead of Delmon Young. That Randy Bush could play.
Now that the doctors have adjusted my medication, I can see things more clearly. While we are struggling to score runs in today’s contest, that’s no reason to have some sort of knee-jerk reaction. It’s a marathon, not a sprint, and I expect Cuddy and D-Young to reward our faith in them by campaign’s end.

Hillarious lolololol TDM but did you taxidermy it yourself and kill it on a frontage rd
I always thought Rich Becker had some real skills
I threw it on my roof 2 weeks ago, some birds were trying to eat it, but it’s still mostly there. Just curl the tail around
That Darn Manny - Sold!!!! High five me in the bleachers and I will slip you the $$$ then
Gardenhire is always pulling this on Thursday day games. A waste of a line up. The Blue Jays have a rusted, tired bunch of has-beens, and this would’ve been a great opportunity to win.
There must be a stat available to see just how poorly the Twins have done in the last five years when hosting early Thursday games. Regardless of resting the prime players for the approaching inter-league play. It isn’t as if Denver is a long flight. Nonsense. This should be evaluated more thoroughly.
I guess Mauer will have to pinch hit in the ninth to break up the non shutout no hitter again.
It’s just Gardy being Gardy Frank V. Since he is a god, who are we to question what he does.
He’s walked 5 batters now and we still only have one run to show for it. I think the whole team has the “flu” today.
Maybe we can score another run without getting a hit.
nice lineup … getting no-no’ed through 5 innings. i think people here just have to be patient with this team, they’re like the youngest in the league…. THERE IS NO QUICK FIX LINEUP!
It’s official: Mauer can now take the rest of the day off. We got a hit!
Just scored another run, with two hits!!
Hey ESPN, it’s “Justin Morneau and the Minnesota Twins” (not Joe Mauer and the Minnesota Twins)
Wonder how close the play was at home?
Danimals,
so let me get this right, you’re advocating being patient with a team where Cuddyer is our experience veteren who actually plays?? That just doesn’t seem right. Too logical
jimmy bee,
for that saturday out on the town, I can also hook you up with a nice striped gopher. Really schnazzy
Nice job by Perkins today. He should be considered for Boof’s spot when Baker comes back.
Hernandez
Baker
Blackburn
Perkins
Slowey
Boof banished to bullpen for Korecky.

Awesome TDM!!! could you quote me a price on some dark grey chipmunk but only in shotty condition. Remember I can taxidermy those myself to save money and I have lots of practice.
Remember TDM to take the eyes out or I will have eyeballs staring from the top of my head at people and it looks different.
I wonder if I can get Aaron Gleeman to come up with one of those catchy campaigns to make Craig Monroe our No. 3 hitter….
“Three, Craig Monroe” maybe
C-Mo3?
I would have the flu too looking at Runge’s strike zone last night.
How bout C’mon
bud did he high five a fan??
I think commenting on Adam Everett inept ability to hit a ball is beating a dead horse…
…but lets take a few more swings. CUT THIS JOKE!!!
I’d give at least two full rehab starts to Baker before calling him up. No hurry, get that injury COMPLETELY healed.
Perkins with a quality start.
And I’m resigned to the fact that this is a rebuilding/replacement/development year. If you’re gonna string out Harris/Tolbert, Young, and Lamb to see what they’ll do, you might as well string out Boof some too to see once and for all if he’ll straighten out.
That Darn Manny says:

Everett did just hit a homerun a few days ago… Isn’t that what everyone in here is screaming for? More homerun hitters?
kubels nickname should be wheels
how ’bout speed racer? Go, speed racer, go!
Nuts. 2 guys out at the plate. Harris and Kubes not known for their wheels. Wonder how close the plays were?

TDM, didnt really understand what you meant or maybe i missed a comment about Cuddy further up. Do you think i’m wrong about letting this team have some slack b/c of their overal age? I think we have pretty high standards for the Twins to be always successful b/c how they’ve done the last 6 yrs… but come on! THEY WERE IN FIRST PLACE … until yesterday. i mean … i love the mental masturbation just as much as the next guy … but at least understand some players have slumps etc.
the only person i’m really pissed off about is Lamb. he needs to work out or soemthing i guess…… oh yeah and Kubel too… he just seems unhappy all the time. some players at least try to lift their teamates like gogomez and cuddy. so ranting too long and randomly….
Now here comes an ERA that you gotta love: 27.00 (That’s a HR in 1/3 of an inning for Benito)

Sorry T that will be my only Kubel joke all day, but I was entrapped by the urge
Strange substitution. I would think Gomez has more value to Gardy as a pinch runner at this point in the game than to take C-Mo’s spot in CF.
Danimals,
I was agreeing with you
Morneau needs to be DH. He is mobile as a sloth.
Cuddy is our most experienced everyday player and he’s what, 28. that’s what i’m saying. But patience has no place on these blogs.
Cleatus Davidson was my kind of player
Kaci, you’re a moron.
“Morneau needs to be DH. He is mobile as a sloth.”
So far this season Morneau has saved a lot of errors at 1b his defensive skills are underrated.
ok I like Mike Redmond but there is no way I would have had him lead off the 9th for us right there.
I KNOW IT IS REALLY EARLY TO GIVE UP ON DY BUT ANYONE CAN SEE HE HAS A HORRIBLE SWING AND SEEMS TO BE LATE ON EVERYTHING. I THOUGHT THIS GUY WOULD DRIVE THE BALL AND BRING SOME POWER TO THIS LINEUP. IT IS HORRIBLE TO SAY BUT I WOULD RATHER HAVE PUNTO UP IN A RBI SPOT OVER DY. GOTTA PINCH HIT MAUER HERE!

How bout Tyner instead of Young that would be great seriously. I would do this in an instant. Tyner can hit for a higher avg and he is faster on the basepaths. Plus to this point they bothh have the same amount of HR’s
you know who had a beautiful swing Butch Husky
jimmy i like that from now on instead of slamming someone just use a baseball player refrance. Like when you rip Kubes again T can say “That was like a first inning for Bonser”
Midre Cummings knew his way around the batters box
Awesome BC. I don’t like foul wording on the blog’s. How bout this one,” You blew it like a Nathan fastball striking out Pierzinski”
How about “that was as smooth as harris turning a double play”?
Gotta feel sorry for all the scouts that blew it on Delmon Young and his horrid swing. they should have gotten senddelmonback on the phone. He could have clued them in,.
how about the sound the bat makes when DY hits the ball ….. sweeeeeet….

Great. Crain is pitching. We are in trouble.
Is there a reason Nathan can’t go 2 innings?
Hurry up and get your comments in.
As soon as the Blue Jays win,

I am sure with them playing so many days in a row they do not want to tax Nathan and that is why they do not have him throw 2 innings
I would like to know that too. He should be abkle to go at least 2.
Morneau= Slow/Average fielder at best. His job is to scoop the ball.
Crain Sucks!
Yikes! Bases loaded…

Of course David there saving him for the next game were ahead by five runs.
First pitch single, sigh…
The Drain blows 2 games in a row. He sucks!
Isn’t the object to win a game in this series. They did a bad job of trying to do that leaving Crain in.
Joe Inglet with a hit-nice
I think they should have let Nathan at least pitch to Rolan, you know use your best pitcher against 1 of their best hitters.
Sure get the out AFTER the run scores. Grrr.
“Is there a reason Nathan can’t go 2 innings?”
Its because closers are overrated and we have to prepare Crain, Neshek and Rincon to replace Nathan when we trade him at the deadline.
Hell, anyone can be a closer!
I hope week can come back and at least tie it up. There goes Gardy using the Twins hand book it says ” your closer can only be used for 1 inning” at least he follows the hand book.
They have to “save” Nathan for the next series, apparently while conceding this series.
Yucko. Taking 3 of 4 from the BoSox is meaningless if you immediately turn around and get swept by the mighty Blue Jays.
The twins have absolutley no shot at the playoffs this year with crain and rincon in the line up.
sy, we don’t even have to wait for the blue jays to win, the haters came early…
There are certain teams (and no I will not get you any stats) that I remember the Twins not doing very good against and Toronto is one of them. The others I remember them not doing good against in the past include Cleveland, Toronto, KC, Angels, Oakland
Wait! Mauer swung at the first pitch!!! WOW! Mark it on your calendar!
The Haters are coming!
The Haters are coming!

Just because you don’t say “aw shucks, golly, gee whiz we’ll get em next time skipper,” does not mean you “hate” the team. Being a fan does not mean you are not allowed to be critical of an abysmal performance.

Not to nitpick, but it’s actually “All hope abandon, ye who enter here”.
Perhaps a more appropriate Dante quote would be “No greater grief than to remember days of joy when misery is at hand.”

SY if Punto would have played we would have won. If Kubel and T go out to eat more often we would have won. If Monroe were the full time DH we would have won. Last but not least if we still had Tyner he would have been on base and he would have scored and we would have won.
Critical is fine.
They played poorly this series.
But if I end any sentence with the word sucks!

Matt Holiday’s name on the trade block according to Ken Rosenthal.
http://msn.foxsports.com/mlb/story/8143654?MSNHPHMA
Though another name in that article interests me…
Garret Atkins
With Lamb struggling, and considerably older, could this be a lead worth following?
The Twins need to decide between Monroe and Kubel, and use the other as potential pieces to get something.
The way I look at it, there are several options. Not many are popular.
Morneau, Mauer, Young, Gomez, Tolbert, Harris are all untouchable.
Moving Cuddyer (though it’d be viewed as a likely cheapskate move) would still allow for an OF of Young (RF), Gomez, Monroe/Kubel (LF).
There’s also Lamb, and Everett, though I doubt they could be anything but a toss in at this point.
Could the Twins realistically put something together to get Holiday? No. But I think Atkins could be within reach with the right pieces.
If I’m dreaming, the Twins find a way to bring in both Atkins and Holiday. But that’s just dreaming.
But still, Atkins would be an upgrade to Lamb as well as a young player that could still fit in the rebuilding plans.
I know I’m starting the trade talks early…and will likely get panned for suggesting the Twins trade a guy they JUST resigned long term. But hey, nobody expected the Delmon Young trade…and it shook things up. I could see Smith during something surprising if he sees an opportunity.
Anybody want any action on Delmon finishing the year with 36 doubles and in the teens for home runs??
Atkins would be a perfect fit for our team and maybe a combo of pitching and span could bring him in. Tavarez and Podsednik aren’t impressing this year and the Rockies could be looking for a replacement.
TDM: I didn’t think of Span or Pridie, good call on suggesting either of those two.
They’d be especially helpful in trade talks considering that the Rox would likely be trading Holiday somewhere at the same time.
I wonder if the Twins could call about Atkins and perhaps *suggest* a team that could be brought in to also take Holiday.
The Rox will likely be looking young, which the Twins could help with. Meanwhile, a team looking for a guy like Holiday would less likely have minor leaguers ready, so the Twins could supplment the trade as needed to get Atkins over.
Any chance we could still get that Santana guy from ya? Turns out that Kennedy and Hughes aren’t as good as we thought and we desperately need an Ace. What’s that, you traded him to the Mets and he’s starting against us. Damn that Cashman!! F@#@ing Sh@# F#$#
Timing is poor here cuz of the losses, but at this point, is this team better without Santana or worse?
Considering the greater problem this season has been the offense, I’d say the team is just as well off.
Joe/LaVelle,
Please get Bill Smith’s thoughts on Ben Revere, since he was watching the Snappers this week.
The Twins, for some reason, kept him in extended spring training until injuries at Beloit…now up over .400 with a couple hits tonight, in his 16th game, 7 xbh and 10 stolen bases. Please find out why they actually were going to send him to Elizabethton. He’s already showing more polish than Benson.
Bill Smith made a bad trade for Delmon Young. And any talk of future trades for pitching is crazy. What good could come of any trade if a hitter is not involved in a trade. The Twins have good pitching but they lack run support and that is the bottom line cause I said so….
“Bill Smith made a bad trade for Delmon Young.”
I can’t think of a single person who protested the trade. It’s only now when he’s struggling that suddenly everybody always knew that it was a bad trade.
Just a heads up, Jason Bartlett isn’t exactly tearing it up. And Garza only recently came off the DL.
No one protested that trade harder than me. Losing a pitcher like Garza for a corner OF? Ridiculous.
No sense crying about it. The deal is done. Delmon is playing exactly like Delmon plays. No surprises at all. It’s not Delmon’s fault people ascribed superstar status to him. He is who he is.
Can’t figure out who the Twins lost with .238 Jason Kubel hitting in the 3 whole.
Unreal.
…3 hole that is…
From MLB.com: “We’ve definitely had better defensive teams here,” Gardenhire said. “You are going to have to live with a few mistakes here and there. Sometimes you give away a little defense for offense. I have a hard time living with that, but sometimes you have to.”
Craig’s Interpretation: “I used to have guys who could catch the ball” Gardenhire narbled. “I’m stuck now, with guys who screw up constantly. Bill Smith replaced my good fielders with a bunch of hacks he said could hit. I can’t stand watching these bums stink the place up, but I don’t have any choice.”
Six weeks in and I’m the biggest bum in the MLB. Thanks Twins fan for showing the support. Who’d of thought I’d be better off in Tampa where no one cares.
I wonder if we could trade Delmon for Tyner. That guy could play ball. And when is Punto getting back We need that guy, better tell Billy to extend him another 3 years.
Who are these guys?? I’ve never seen Lamb, Everett, Gomez, Young, Harris, Tolbert, Blackburn or Hernandez before. This looks like a whole new team they just put together.
The Delmon Young trade hasn’t quite blossomed out yet, however I wouldn’t be so quick to judge. Delmon will take off and repeat or improve on his year last year… we need him for the future more and we should support him, because if we get rid of him Billy will sign some guy to fill the roster spot… like me…
The Tampa Bay Rays have just won their 3rd consecutive World Series led by 3 time Cy Young award winner and Series MVP Matt Garza. Garza pitched a 12 inning shutout bringing back memories of Jack Morris. Meanwhile in other news, Delmon Young appears headed to Japan after a lackluster career with the Minnesota Twins
Dear Shameless, Please, please stop with the David Ortiz analysis and why he did not succeed here at Minnesota. 1)Ortiz was injured much of his time here. 2)I remember him looking at called 3rd strikes so many times I wanted to pull my hair out. Yes , he showed flashs of talent , but he was never even remotely close to what he has become in Boston and lastly when the Twins let him go-NO ONE IN BASEBALL WANTED HIM-THE SOX PICKED HIM AND SAID WHAT THE HECK AND THEN HE WENT COMPLETELY NUTS AND IS NOW A LEGEND-NO ONE COULD HAVE EVER PREDICTED HIS SUCCESS AND IT HAD VERY LITTLE TO DO WITH THE TWINS HITTING PHILOSOPHY-HE GOT A CHANCE AND GOT HEALTHY AND RARELY PLAYS FIRTST BASE AND HAS BLOSSOMED. THE TWINS DONT HIT HOME RUNS BECAUSE THEY DONT GET PLAYERS WHO CAN HIT THEM-DO YOU THINK IF WE(DREAMING)GOT A GUY LIKE JIM THOME A FEW YEARS AGO IN HIS PRIME WE WOULD MAKE HIM GO THE OTHER WAY-NO!! WE got wimpy hitters because the organization refuses to go after some guys who got some bop in their swing. Frank thomas would have been nice, Sheffield would have been nice, the twins will never win another world series because they refust to go after the big boppers and keep getting the adam everetts of the world.
Craig, it’s Young’s sophomore year is it not? I seem to recall Morneau and Mauer running into some problems coming off of their breakout 2006.
Anyone catch Liriano’s line last night?
8 IP 7H 3R 3ER 1W 4 K
93 pitches, 61 strikes.
Not to shabby…
T: I disagreed with the trade, though only mildly. I thought (and still think) Garza was the only Twins’ pitching prospect with number 1 stuff. I’d have not dealt him at all, if he could have gotten along with the coaching staff. However, he did not gel well with the coaches, which is the reason I only mildly protested the trade.
As for whether or not it was a bad trade, I think it is too early to judge the trade, though this year does count, so this year does not to be considered when assessing the deal (i.e., it isn’t just about the future).
Were Mauer or Morneau the worst hitters at their position in all of MLB in their second year?
141g 490AB 62R 117H 23 2B 4 3B 22HR 79RBI 44BB 94SO .239AVE .304OBP .437SLG
I don’t think anyone was jumping up and down for Morneau’s 2005 numbers. But I seem to remember him rebounding the next year. Can you imagine a guy hitting .239 for this years team, wow, he’d have to be cut
So I got out my calculator and did some figuring.
Delmon is on pace for 12 doubles no homers 48 RBI’s and 28 steals. I fully expect the power numbers to come around and the steals to taper off a little.
What a great article by Souhan. Some one needs to take that guy out back and do what needs to be done. It doesn’t surprise me though. These are the same guys who 2 weeks ago wanted Gomez down in the minors. Just a bunch of idiots.
Through 24 games last season, they drew 652,612 fans, an average of 27,192 per game. They played their 24th home game of 2008 on Thursday, losing 3-2 to the Blue Jays in 11 innings in front of an announced 18,701. That put their attendance this year at 592,249, an average of 24,677.
That is a sign of the Twins fan base being upset at the budget and the team that the Twins brought to the table this year. I really think that the budget will go down even greater. Pohlad will try to sell the concept of come see the new stadium and not the team. The fans I think are just sick and tired of having a mediocre team this year and have pretty much given up and called it a wash. I know we are in second place. I will keep a possitive attitude regarding the team.
If you want to see something disgusting, look at the splits from 2005 for Morneau. Look at the monthly ones and see him with a .204 ave in August with 7 XBH’s. and most of the rest aren’t any better. Second half .211 hitter with 13 doubles and 11 homers after the break. Get that bum out of here
People aren’t supposed to remember that year, don’t bring it up Hawk
The Hawk - Is it just me or does it seem like they are hitting a far greater amount of Home runs in the NL as opposed to the AL
The NL may just have the AL’s number this year. I don’t think they have beaten us in interleague since it has started. The best part about the HR is that it’s unknown guys like Uggla.
The Hawk I would like it to either be the Dodger’s year or Phillie’s if it has to be the NL’ year
I would love to see Hank the Yank just croak over getting rid of Torre and then he wins it with the Dodgers. Even better if the Yank’s finish behind the Ray’s in there division and then the Dodger’s win it this year.
