Cuddyer to start in center field against Rangers

Posted on May 19th, 2008 – 3:44 PM
By Joe Christensen

As La Velle speculated for today’s editions, Michael Cuddyer is getting the start in center field tonight.

Updates to come…

Update (6:00 p.m.): Carlos Gomez took batting practice and said he’d like to be back in the lineup by tomorrow.

Matt Tolbert’s appointment with the hand specialist was pushed to tomorrow, so there was no update on his status.

Scott Baker continued to feel a slight issue with his right groin in a bullpen session today in Fort Myers, Fla. So instead of throwing live batting practice in his next session he will probably throw another bullpen.

Oh, and Rangers slugger Josh Hamilton hit a ball off the curtain — high off the panel with the division winners — during early batting practice. Manager Ron Washington was still marveling about it during his pregame media session.

Rangers (22-23)

1. Ian Kinsler, 2B

2. Michael Young, SS

3. Josh Hamilton, CF

4. Milton Bradley, DH

5. David Murphy, RF

6. Brandon Boggs, LF

7. Frank Catalanotto, 1B

8. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C

9. Ramon Vazquez, 3B

Starting pitcher: RH Scott Feldman

Twins (21-22)

1. Alexi Casilla, 2B

2. Brendan Harris, DH

3. Joe Mauer, C

4. Justin Morneau, 1B

5. Michael Cuddyer, CF (corrected from earlier)

6. Jason Kubel, RF

7. Delmon Young, LF

8. Mike Lamb, 3B

9. Adam Everett, SS

Starting pitcher: RH Boof Bonser

Metrodome. First pitch: 7:10 p.m.

Considering the circumstances, I guess this is the best we get. I personally would have DH’d Lamb, and played Harris at 3rd to see what he looks like over there, but it is probably a wash. Maybe a good way for Harris to rest up the hammy a little bit too

CharlieMurphy says:

I still think we should have Livan DH on the days he isn’t pitching.

harris as DH? can we get brent gates out of retirement?

jdiko says:

Why have harris DH, lets let monroe get more swings.

jdiko says:

May 19th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

where is rondell when we need him… lol

fcmlefty says:

May 19th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Livan at DH today wouldn’t have been a bad choice, considering that Monroe was going to get today off almost no matter what.

Another idea to explore might be a 3rd catcher if Gomez has to go to the DL. Redmond could catch, and Mauer could DH more often, and would be like a little mini-break for him, and hopefully get Red Dog going too. The problem, of course, is Monroe would have to play alot of CF. Too bad Punto isn’t healthy enough to play a few games out there.

romer says:

Hope Cuddy has fun tonight in CF.

If he does, why not try him at 3B? After all this is a tryout year……..a development/replacement/rebuilding year.

BoogieNeedsAGoal says:

Should have just let the Boofster swing for himself…

David says:

Im assuming Kubel’s DH’ing not in RF?

Kubelfan says:

May 19th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Whaaaaaaaat? Cuddyer’s weakness is his range. CF requires the most range of any OF position. Oh well, maybe this isn’t a big deal if it only happens once. But why are we worried about Monroe wearing out after just a few games at CF? Shouldn’t we be more worried about Young wearing out? As usual, Gardy probable knows something I don’t…it’s just confusing to me who lacks said information.

David says:

May 19th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

Oh, I misread.

romer says:

Joe, you’ve got Cuddy listed as starting in RF.

No doubt when Punto gets back he can play center field full time and send Gomez down to save service time and work on his eye at the plate.

jimmy bee says:

Anthony LaPanta should be the DH. I want to see him hold onto that horrible hair pice while he is rounding first.

Dane says:

May 19th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

Yea why don’t we put Monroe in, he has been fairly solid and he is a HR threat to put in our line-up.

TJ...S says:

May 19th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

I think we have to look at the situation we are in. A lot of guys on the DL make it hard to field a team that will make everyone happy. I am not pumped about the line up but it is the best we can do right now.

The biggest question is: “How long will Gomez be out for?”

If he is going to be out for sometime then we need to bring Span up, let him have a little try out in the OF.

As for Cuddy and where to put him, I read that someone thinks he should try out at 3B. Do you not remember that failure a few years ago?

Our lineup in the future will be great, we just have to put up with the bumps now. Young will be the hitter we want he just needs to settle down and get used to his new surroundings.

Enjoy the ball game boys! and girls too! Sorry

Doug Munson says:

May 19th, 2008 at 4:26 pm

I think Gardy rode the Monroe hot streak for about as long as he should have.Monroe had some horrid ABS in Colorado. A lefty/righty DH platoon with Kubel and Monroe sounds about right to me.Each of them can pick up a few extra ABS in the outfield once a week or so.

gobbledygookguy says:

May 19th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

not sure i get this cuddy in cf thing. he has been far from good in rf miss playing several balls and having no range at all. i think monroe isn’t ready for aarp so playing 4-5 days in cf shouldn’t put him in the old folks home.
he screws up tonight and what second guessing, imo gardy is just asking for trouble from the blog nation.

BC Beneke says:

May 19th, 2008 at 4:47 pm

ugly lineup in a tough situation. Life could be worse. Nick Punto could be off the disabled list!

The fact that we are doing this well, and people are upset is a vote for Morneau for MVP, and Livan Hernandez for CY Young, and a vote for Joe Nathan for Reliever of the year.

Imagine if this team had a hitting coach, and their manager wasn’t busy with his bathroom caulk commericals and concentrated on his baseball team? Maybe it’s more serious, and it’s his brother’s death, and his own health issues, but he’s not the same Gardy that he was 2-3 years ago. Not by any stretch.

Doug Munson says:

May 19th, 2008 at 5:03 pm

BC Benike,

Gardenhire doesn’t have the same players he had 2-3 years ago either.I’m no fan of his,but this is looking like a pretty rag tag unit right now.I think its time for management to realize that the fillers they brought in, Lamb,Everett, and to a lesser extent,Harris, don’t constitute a quality ML infield.

As a fan I will hope that once the injury situation is taken care of,the Twins will do the right thing and truely start rebuilding for 2010.It was a nice try to stay “competitive” but this group won’t get them there IMO.

BC Beneke says:

May 19th, 2008 at 5:04 pm

Fire Gardy and move him into the radio booth to replace Dan Gladden.

Maybe bring Dan Gladden in as the hitting instructor for the AA team?

Fire Joe Vavra, and contact Kevin Seitzer or Mike Greenwell.

Bring Anderson in as the manager, and bring up the Cliburns from AAA. The manager as our bench coach, and the pitching coach to bring some stability in the transition to our pitching situation.

Once the players are healthy, if nothing else has changed, it’s time to unload Mike Lamb and Adam Everett (I thought they were good signings, but I am willing to admit when I’m wrong) I’d like to see Pohlad and Smith do the same thing!

BC Beneke says:

May 19th, 2008 at 5:06 pm

Doug, after seeing your comments I think you can see that I was thinking along the same lines as you were.

Except I am not willing to say that Gardy is not showing signs of being less of a coach than he was. He is making far too many mistakes.

One is keeping Vavra… that is unforgivable.

Carlos G says:

May 19th, 2008 at 5:07 pm

Harris to DH? Sounds too similar to Tyner at DH.

How did Casilla slip into the lineup? Ugghhhh! I wish the kid would make me eat my words. I just hate his attitude AND he will try to swing from the left side again tonight. That should be humorous to watch again. Oh well, his double pumps from 2b should at least not be a problem in making easy plays turn in to close ones.

Where’s Nicky when we need him?

Tolbert — why did you do that dumb slide?

Nathan, you practically killed Gomez on that 0-2 pitch to the wall and we are still paying for it.

Was that a Korecky sighting yesterday? Will he ever get another chance to pitch before another 8 days goes by?

There. I feel better. Go Twins!

Doug Munson says:

May 19th, 2008 at 5:11 pm

If Smith admits they made mistakes in Lamb and Everett they won’t fire Gardenhire because of it,nor should they.Having said that the Manager needs to be held accountable for continued subpar fundamental play,I’d like to see Gardenhire Talk some blame for that.

Here’s hoping that Smith will admit his mistakes and be more proactive than the man he replaced.

cmathewson says:

May 19th, 2008 at 5:14 pm

Listen guys, the manager has limited options. The regular center fielder is hurt. Harris can’t catch the ball. Monroe can’t play too many days in a row, and he has even less range than Cuddyer. Give the manager some credit for trying to piece it together with a crippled up roster. Sheesh!

Doug Munson says:

May 19th, 2008 at 5:22 pm

I have no problems with his lineups, given what he has to work with. But the Twins have played very poor fundamental baseball for much of this season and someone needs to be held accountable for that, considering that is what the Twins hang their hats on.

twinsfan88 says:

May 19th, 2008 at 5:25 pm

I agree with cmathewson, give Gardy a break. This is the best he can do for today so give it up. I think Gardy did take some blame for yesterday’s game by saying something like, “this is my baseball team out there I take responsiblity for it.”. I bet that everyone was out taking early batting/fielding practice today. (Or at least I hope)

BC Beneke says:

May 19th, 2008 at 5:34 pm

Christie…

this is more about the fact that Gardy still uses Rincon far too much.

He has not fired Joe Vavra

He has not found a solution to the shoddy defense.

This has nothing about Cuddyer playing in CF tonight.

This is about Gardy not doing his job very well.

We know that every sunday he’s going to have a horseshit line up out there, and on most Thursdays. He empties the entire bench all at once instead of having the team flow, he makes it worse.

When Punterrible is back, he’ll get to play far too much.

I also have not seen Gardy take off his jacket in 3 years. That is more of a personal annoyance. He has worn that jacket every day since the 2006 season. No one else wears a jacket…

Fire Gardy, Fire Vavra. Bring up the Cliburns from AAA. have the pitching coach replace Anderson, and have the AAA manager be our bench coach. Bring in Seitzer, Greenwell, Bill Madlock, or Al Oliver… maybe Johnny Ray in as the hitting instructor for the team. Gardy’s a good guy so let him replace the 10 times worthless Dan Gladden in the booth, and then when the offense is closer to 100% if Lamb and Everett are still playing like Tony Batista and RonDL White fire them too!

Man this line-up sucks!

Hope Boof finds his curve!

Man we suck in a very average way!

Without gomez in the line-up there’s little reason to even watch tonight….sad.

Nathan Morneau and Gomez that’s all we got (no I didn’t forget Mauer the Tim Duncan of baseball I wouldn’t miss him).

Young and Mauer the ambiguously gay duo

Toby says:

May 19th, 2008 at 6:07 pm

With all the injuries there is nothing wrong with the lineups and its worth giving it a show for one game.

Jason says:

May 19th, 2008 at 6:09 pm

All this garbage and Mauer still bats third.

Cuddyer has been a wasted spot this season and they upgrade him to CF?

Where for art thou Denard Span???

you’re kidding me with Mike Lamb and the game on the line, right? There’s only so many times the guy’s going to be able to get that blooper to left to fall.

Jason says:

May 19th, 2008 at 6:15 pm

Let me be Gardy:

Harris
Mauer
Kubel
Morneau
Cuddy

Monroe
Lamb
Everett

Wait, this lineup makes way too much sense….

Brent says:

May 19th, 2008 at 6:23 pm

Let ME be Gardy
Casilla
Mauer
Morneau
Cuddy
Kubel

HOliday hits third,
Ortiz hits third,
Hamilton hits third

why not have our best hitter hit third.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 6:34 pm

“why not have our best hitter hit third.”

“our best hitter” does bat third.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

BC, while Gardy can suggest coaching changes and roster moves…I don’t think its his decision ultimately.

Brent, once again…Ortiz hits third because the Red Sox have Manny Rameriez hitting behind him. Holiday has Todd Helton. Hamilton has Milton Bradley.

Michael Cuddyer is not Manny Rameriez. He will never be Todd Helton. And I don’t think the Twins have a future Milton Bradley.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 6:39 pm

Craig, people don’t equate high AVG or OBP with good hitting. They think of power as good hitting.

That’s the problem with the word “good”. Is power or consistency more important?

twinsfan32 says:

May 19th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

Why are some people on here saying that Monroe cant play too many days in a row and that he needs to rest? Come on give me a break the guy is only 31 years old!! he’s not 41……

But then again it doesnt really matter because Boof is pitching tonight. Boof probably wouldn’t even be the ace on the St Paul Saints pitching staff. If Boof sucks again tonight, its time for him to start packing for Rochester

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

I don’t know if the team that Gardy is putting out on the field tonight, is the worst in the history of the Twins, but it has to be close. I don’t blame Gardy. He has been dealt an awful hand.

They still have a good chance to beat the Rangers. The Twins should actually feel confident tonight. Not because they are a good team, but because Texas is so bad.

Brent says:

May 19th, 2008 at 6:45 pm

T,

Understood that Cuddy isn’t as good as The three players you named, but he still hits behind Morneau if Morneau is hitting 4th. This would just get Morneaau more AB’s, moves Kubel up and I know my cred might go right out the window when I say this, moves YOung up (who I still hold out hope for).

Gardy won’t hit 3 lefties in a row so that throws out Kubel as cleanup and Cuddy has hit there before.

I also like the thought of the pitcher having to get through both Mauer and Morneau in the first.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Jason Pridie is completely over-matched in AAA. He needs to drop down to AA, with Luke Hughes or Dustin Martin moving up.

Knott and Whiteside have been released. Ruiz should follow.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

I think the reason Monroe is sitting is more or less that platoon thing that hasn’t been working as we had all hoped.

The only reason I can think is that if Cuddy, Kubel, and Yuong are in the lineup they need a bench OF option in case of PH situations.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

Can somebody with better knowledge of where to get stats let me know how many of Morneau’s HR’s this year have been multi-run?

I seem to recall the Twins having the problem the last few years where he’d never have anybody on base when he jacked them.

David says:

T says:

Now imagine if Cuddyer were batting third.

Morneau needs somebody behind him that can protect him, because they didn’t pitch to him in that last AB.

Though I diagree with at least one of the strikes called against Cuddyer in that AB. The first 5 pitches were to the exact same palce.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Pardon, that should be “Imagine if Cuddyer were batting 4th”

Toby says:

May 19th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

It has nothing to do with speaking with there wallets. It is just that MN fans are mostly fairweather fans. The ones that don’t show up are the ones that complain about the payroll. We have had 1 bad year and this will be 2. Teams like the pirates and royals have gone a lot longer with bad teams so we need to quit whining and deal with the fact that you cannot put a winning team out there every year.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

This is not Gardy’s fault……The Twins do not have that much talent. This is one of the worst Twins teams in recent memory. No Manager can win with this team…..They have to be kicking themselves for signing Lamb to a 2 year deal with an option for a 3rd. And No-Hit Adam bad shoulder and all is a complete bust at short and Boof keeps proving he is not a major league pitcher…Rincon the same..Crain is not ready yet to pitch in the Majors again after being hurt and with Pat gone…..all of sudden the Twins have no bullpen, no power and no defense, that is not Gardy’s fault…..that is what he was handed by Smith and Company.

Not true. Hitters are streaky. Now Harris is getting in his groove again. Delmon is looking better, Lamb will still hit. Twins fans are so used to seeing utility men play they think that every ball should be caught and if you give a guy 500 at bats he will never get out of a slump but that’s not the case. None of these players will stay in a slump the whole year like Tyner and Punto.

David, see note at 8:14. but, thanks for noticing.

Something about even a blind squirrel finding an acorn.

Lifetime average of .180 left handed and now 1 for 6 this year. I won’t mind eating my words tonight though. I expect he will continue to prove my words over the course of his career though. Go Lexi. what a stud!

Everett_Fan says:

Is it just me or does Kubel seem to move better than Cuddy in right? Is that possible?

Toby says:

May 19th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

For anyone who doesn’t know Jon Lester (BOS) Has thrown 8 innings and has given up no hits.

Everett_Fan says:

May 19th, 2008 at 8:28 pm

Oh, oh. Vavra was talking Casilla. He must be mad that he drove it. Should have gone the other way softly.

Carlos G says:

May 19th, 2008 at 8:31 pm

T - I think the argument for Mauer 2 and Morneau 3 is every bit as valid as Mauer 2/Morneau 4 or Mauer 3/Monreau 4. Not sure which one you support. In every situation, you have someone hitting behind Monreau — and Cuddy is the likely one in each case.

The argument for 2 and 3 for the two best twins hitters is to get them more at bats and with fewer outs in the first inning. It’s called bunching your hitters. One potential good inning and two quick ones. The current method requires one of our automatic outs to get on base or to hit one out like Lexi just did. Odds and previous history are proving that to be pretty unreliable.

In the end, our problem is not really the batting order though. It is fun to speculate, but when you have as few hitters as we do to work with, your hands are a bit tied.

Toby says:

May 19th, 2008 at 8:32 pm

I really hope he gets it.

Toby says:

May 19th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

Jon Lester has thrown a no hitter in boston tonight and it sends fenway into a frenzy!

rebeldream says:

May 19th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Regardless of how good Gardenhire has been at some things this year (yeah, I know. like what?), the thing he has been utterly incompetent at is knowing when to pull the starting pitcher. I know, I know, hindsight is 20/20, but can’t he do it right ONCE?

Toby says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Krissy says:

David says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:07 pm

I’m starting to thing the people that want Gardy fired are right how do keep Boof in there….Gardy could help alot of our young pitchers out but getting them out of the game at the right.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:10 pm

As long as Gardy keeps Mauer batting 3rd, and doesn’t repeat the failed experiment of using him in the 2 spot, he is doing just fine. That’s the most important thing when he fills out the lineup, put Mauer 3rd. The rest doesn’t matter much.

Mudcat says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:11 pm

Everybody seems to agree with you, Dave, but you have a funny way of putting it!
But I’m with you all the way, buddy!

David says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

I’m at work so I was typing fast, and did not proof read it.

David says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:14 pm

If the Twins lose this game you can put it all on the great Gardy’s managing or lack there of.

mike wants wins says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:15 pm

I would agree that Gardy’s options continue to be limited by the poor job of drafting, developing, and otherwise acquiring the right players. However, the fact that the team has been worse and worse at the “little things” every year he has been manager is a reflection on him as much or more than on Ryan/Smith. I’m no Gardy fan, but Ryan and his scouts and the development staff are the primary culprits in terms of this teams success (and the success or failure for the next couple of years.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

crap again

Carlos G says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

Well, I am not one to let the players off so easily. If Boof makes a simple throw to 2nd, we turn a DP and no runs score in the 7th… game over pretty much with the 5-2 lead and 2 innings to go.

zwiefz says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

I agree somewhat that Gardy seems to be leaving pitchers in a little too long, but look at his options. I don’t trust Crain and Rincon right now, Reyes is generally used as a specialist, Bass is long relief, and Nathan is for the 9th. The best setup option right now is Korecky and how often do you want to put a rookie in tight spots?

Losing Neshek really weakened Gardy’s options, not trying to make an excuse, just looking at it realistically.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

“Is it just me or does Kubel seem to move better than Cuddy in right? Is that possible?”

Sure it’s possible. Kubel doesn’t have Cuddyer’s legs, but he may pick up the ball better off the bat. He may judge the flight of the ball better. Bottom line though, neither are good fielders.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

Go Murphy!!!!! The Rangers are capable of playing even dumber than the Twins!

La Velle says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:23 pm

I just added it up. From the moment I wrote that the Rangers were the worst team in the AL, they have gone 14-6 and are winning tonight.

Boy, can I pick ‘em!

Toby says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Boof better practice that throw to second for a few hours tomorrow so he could make it in his sleep

mike wants wins says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

If you aren’t willing to put Korecky in tight spots, why are you willing to let rookie hitters hit? Korecky is not the best option right now, probably. His minor league career was too exciting (as in, too many base runners). However, why not give him a chance? He doesn’t seem to be getting much chance to prove whether he is good or not (while Delmon and Gomez are given every chance).

This team is about where most of us thought it would be, just arriving there differently. With the success of Livan and Nick B, this team should have 5 more wins if it was hitting like many thought it would. But they don’t, so the work of those two pitchers is making up for the generally bad hitting.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

I tuned out for a while after Casilla’s homer…who are we blaming and want canned tonight?

Gardy, Vavra, Anderson, Wally the Beerman?

I can’t keep up anymore.

mike wants wins says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

Casilla now has more HRs than Mauer and Young combined, one fourth of the way through the season. What do you think I could have made in Vegas making that bet?

Shawn in Binghamton says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:29 pm

Cuddyer?

JDW says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:30 pm

Fire Gardenhire!

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

At the beginning of the season when everybody was wondering who’d have the first homer, I said it was just as likely taht somebody nobody would expect would get it.

Turns out it was Kubel, but then I think Harris was next. So I just missed it.

But Harris, Casilla, and Evertt have combined for 4 already this season. How does that compare to our 2B and SS tandem last year at this time?

JDW says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:31 pm

Cuddyer is the most overrated OF in the MLB. Only his arm is legit

JDW says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:32 pm

Good comment T

dan says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Carlos,

After Boof made the error he should have been pulled. After making such a huge mistake there is no way his head could have been clear to pitch.

FINALLY JESUS CHRIST RON!

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

So my question…

When the offense stinks but the pitching is awesome, everybody wants Vavra fired.

When pitching stinks and offense scores some runs, it’s…Gardy?

Maybe Anderson’s lost hist touch. Hmmm?

dan says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:33 pm

Now it doesnt make sense to pinch run cause a hit scores kubel anyway JESUS!

Shawn in Binghamton says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

I think Castillo and LNP each had 1 all year, Bartlett might have had 6?

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

So if Evertt gets an AB…Monroe would likely be a PH option.

But the problem is…who plays the field? Clark?

Toby says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Where on earth did that miss.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:35 pm

dan, it takes a lot less to score Kubel from 2nd than it would Gomez.

danimals says:

any chance lamb will come through here? (not holding my breath)

mike wants wins says:

No, this is a Boof issue. He’s just not that good. I think Anderson is good, he has a track record of being successful in the minors and so far with the Twins.

JDW says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:36 pm

Who’s decision is it to take pitchers out? Do we blame Gardenhire or Anderson? Both? Ultimately it comes down to the Manager.

Royster says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

Clark at second, Monroe to CF and Casilla to SS

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

Swung at Ball 4 (or at least 3)

Gardy’s hands are tied. If he pulls lamb for Monroe, they “accidentally” walk him and face Everett.

danimals says:

Toby says:

Why doesn’t gardy understand that there will be no save situation now so why keep nathan on the bench and let crain piss away the already slim chance of a comeback.

dan says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:43 pm

cause he is gardy!

Carlos G says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

T - I called for Reyes before any runs scored in the 7th. So, no, it is not all 2nd guessing. He got hammered; then butchered a routine DP throw; then got hammered again. I made the call before the DP misfire.

It wasn’t that hard.

JDW says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

T: No! IMO Gardenhire has repeatedly shown a reluctance to remove a starter when it is due. People can say our bullpen is being taxed but when does a reliever have to be coddled and not used just because he threw a dozen pitches 2 games in a row? I know our relivers have had injury ( Neshek) but I guess I think pitchers in general are babied too much. With that being said it is obvious one can tell when a starter has either lost it or else been figured out by the batters (ala Slowely)

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

dan, they can’t just go to Nathan every single game where they’re down by one run late.

They need guys like Rincon, Crain, and Reyes to step it up. Bremer said it best, they needed somebody to step up with Neshek hurt and so far nobody’s done that.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

If some of the people had they’re way, Nathan would’ve thrown in roughly 30 games already by this point.

Probably for 40 innings or more.

USAFChief says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Why can’t they go to Nathan, almost every time, when they’re down by one run late?

What are they saving him for? Has he pitched a lot lately?

Toby says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

He hasn’t pitched since friday so why not put him in.

Cuddyer Stinks says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

No Monroe? Yea pinch hit Redmond that will work

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:50 pm

“Why can’t they go to Nathan, almost every time, when they’re down by one run late?”

Yeah, we’ve been down that road. Last year he was going to Nathan in non-saves.

So naturally when he ended up struggling or blowing it the argument was Gardy was a moron for doing it.

But whatever, use Nathan every night. That’ll guarantee that he’s worn out when he need him most.

dan says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Nathan hasn’t pitched since Friday, and frankly they aren’t stepping up, but they can’t trot them out there and blow games if they expect to win. It seems more and more like winning is secondary right now.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:51 pm

Oh hey look. They pinch hit Monroe for Mr. Automatic Out.

Oh wait, Casilla hit a homer. So that makes Gardy stupid now.

Cuddyer Stinks says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Mr Automatic Out? What are you doped up on

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:53 pm

Boy, the K-Zone tonight has been most inconsistent. That last ball was better than the strike before it (at least IMHO)

Royster says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

wow, I hope they don’t have to take the field again now!

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

“Mr Automatic Out? What are you doped up on”

Like I said. Casilla hit a homer today. So everybody loves him now and thus Gardy is a moron.

snepp says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:54 pm

But whatever, use Nathan every night. That’ll guarantee that he’s worn out when he need him most.

Yes, save him for that hypothetical future save so that you can use him in a game where you’re down by 10 because “he needs some work.”

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

I want to see them tied for just that reason Royster.

…this K-Zone confuses me. I have a bad feeling a Twin’s going to get K-ed up on one of those balls to end this.

Carlos G says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

T - Nobody is suggesting using Nathan a lot more than he is used to. He has 17 innings so far. Not a big deal. And 4 of those innings were in non-save situations; two of them to just get some work. If he doesn’t pitch tonight, he probably works tomorrow even if we are losing or winning by 10.

Fact is Gardy has not done well so far this season on making the pitching moves. He has been an easy 2nd guess target. Bad luck? Maybe. Bad managing? Also, maybe. Lots of us are going with (B) above.

Cuddyer Stinks says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:55 pm

No I just would not have used Redmond for Everett, I dunno Red doesnt look good at the plate this year.

Cuddyer Stinks says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

Lets go Joseph!

Shawn in Binghamton says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:56 pm

T is fired up

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

I want to puzzle out this potential Bottom of the 9th

OF: Young, Gomez, Monroe
IF: Lamb, Clark, Cuddyer, Morneau? (Cuddy hasn’t played second since 2003 I think)

dan says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

Casilla’s home run was a fluke, it was a belt high pitch down the heart of the plate, it was a get it over strike and Casilla went for it.

Frankly Casilla is here for his “glove” and his speed. He is a .219 hitter at the MLB level. Monroe is the right decision there Monroe has a chance at hitting a HR where Casilla hit his for the next 3 seasons.

Royster says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

It would be fun to see, Reddog at 2B, Clark at ss or would they give up the DH and put Harris in the field? I admit it would be fun, and they couldn’t do much worse than the fielding we’ve seen lately.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

My bad…top 10th ;)

Toby says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

If you put red in for everett and he gets on and monroe hits one out twins win if you put monroe in and he hits on out its a tie game and then red gets a single and we go to extras. It was the right choice and there wasn’t a whole lot of though necessary.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:57 pm

does Cuddyer play 2b if this inning ends in a tie?

T says:

USAFChief says:

“But whatever, use Nathan every night. That’ll guarantee that he’s worn out when he need him most.”

Nobody’s saying use him every night. But tonight’s a home game, no more save situation. You’re down one run going into the ninth. Nathan hasn’t pitched since Friday. You’ve lost 5 of 6.

I ask again, what are you saving him for?

Cuddyer Stinks says:

May 19th, 2008 at 9:58 pm

Okay, Walk-Off for Morneau so we avoid the weirdest infield EVER next inning.

Cuddyer Stinks says:

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

dan, he just tied the game in the ninth. I think the annoucers have the right to call it with some enthusiasm.

Dick still gives credit to quality plays by the opposing team. Try watching the Hawk call a game. Case in point, Gomez’s 08 cycle and Mornaeu 3-HR game in 07.

And that baserunning play ticks me off. Contact play and Morneau hits it to the one spot he shouldn’t have.

Cuddyer Stinks says:

Royster says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Here we go!

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

“T is just very opinionated and thinks hes always right…”

Hardly. I just want people to think about things in more than just “___ sucks” and “___ is awesome.”

It takes 50 men and several coaches to play a ball game. No one piece is to blame.

And like I always say…you have to sometimes give the opposing team credit.

And here’s why he didn’t go to Nathan. Now Nathan can come in to hold a tie in extra innings.

Carlos G says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

no way we should not have scored 2 runs in that inning. That’s all on Gardy. (That was just for you T - LOL)

Jason says:

the number one thing i take from the bottom of the ninth…we sent a PINCH HITTER to plate who’s batting .160.

A guy off the bench used because he’s better than the guy who was due up hitting .160.

This is Minnesota Twins baseball.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

Clark comes in for Monroe (hitting 1st)

Nathan comes in for…who and bats where?

JDW says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

T- You need to watch more W-Sox games Hawk gives way more credit to opposing teams than Bremer and the majority of opposing announcers. Ive heard several instances of Hawk giving credit to the Twins.

P.S: T- I usually agree w/ your comments so dont feel this is a personal attack tonight. We just disagree as far as Gardenhire & Hawk Harrelson goes

Shawn in Binghamton says:

OK, no more DY calls, at least tonight.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

I think what bothers me more about Hawk is that he’s very calm for ANYTHING by the opposing team and wigs out for the most unimportant of plays (”you can put it on the board!” when down 12-1 game).

I’m also a staunch opposer of “We” coming from an announcer. He sounds like a fan who snuck into the booth.

JDW says:

Kevin says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

T,

You’re absolutely right… Gardy is beyond reproach in EVERYTHING he does. He’s the perfect manager just as he was a perfect player. Everyone on here who points out the obvious — shame on all of you! Gardy is the second coming of the Messiah and no one can contest T’s immaculate baseball acumen… let alone his tsuami-like man-crush on a manager who had to agree to manage a team that was set to be contracted just to get a chance to manage. I have to wonder though, considering how Gardy was created as nature’s most perfect species…where’s his ring?

USAFChief says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Yes, that’s exactly what Gardy’s thinking should be, T.

“I’ll pitch the worse pitcher first, in case we get exactly one run in the bottom of the ninth and go to extra innings. That way I can pitch Nathan the tenth.”

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Yeah, we need to make a move with Buscher.

And to answer Dick’s questions, no they can not keep eating. The promotion ends after 2 hours or 7 innings. Which is first.

Boggs, Cantalope, and Saltypistachio have five of the Ranger”s hits tonight.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

According to Kevin, I never complain about any situation.

Which is very much incorrect.

I think the problem with Kevin (and some other people) is that since I don’t complain about the same things every post I make…they forget that I have problems with this team as it is.

But if it’ll help, I can write up a form “signature” of sorts and paste it to the end of every one of my comments. That way everytime I post you can get your reminder as to where I find fault with the team.

Carlos G says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:21 pm

To avoid T suggesting this is a 2nd guess, I would bring in Korecky now for Rincon.

T says:

The all Desert-Team doing the damage.

I really enjoyed the Colorado radio announcers (heard on XM radio). THey were knowledgable and respectful and had nice things to say about the Twins. dont know their names. but they were fun to listen to even if you weren’t Rox fans.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

“To avoid T suggesting this is a 2nd guess, I would bring in Korecky now for Rincon.”

I’d go with Livan. Get out of the inning and then also hit. ;)

And that’s a joke, so that people don’t think I’m arguing.

Peter North says:

Daniel1966 says:

T says:

Wait…never heard that rule before.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

So just send Anderson up there, and force the ump to make you take him.

Mike says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Wait a second. Did he just pull Nathan after a 5 pitch inning? Can’t he just forfeit the game instead of giving out free stats to the opposing team.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Or have Rincon fake injury.

Carlos G says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Can’t give up a run here. Not much chance of scoring next inning with Clark, pitcher, Harris due up.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Yeah, Nathan should still be in here. It’d be nice to know why that is not the case.

Still trying to track down the Mound Visit rule as well. That’s a weird one.

snepp says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

8.06
A professional league shall adopt the following rule pertaining to the visit of the manager or coach to the pitcher:
(a) This rule limits the number of trips a manager or coach may make to any one pitcher in any one inning;
(b) A second trip to the same pitcher in the same inning will cause this pitcher’s automatic removal;
(c) The manager or coach is prohibited from making a second visit to the mound while the same batter is at bat, but
(d) if a pinch-hitter is substituted for this batter, the manager or coach may make a second visit to the mound, but must remove the pitcher.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

So get this, MLB.com doesn’t appear to keep a copy of the rule book online anymore. It just has some of the rules and you have to buy the full book.

Seems like it. Doesn’t matter what I don’t like, just focus on what I do.

Royster says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:31 pm

So much for Livan pinch hitting, with only Bass left in the pen Korecky will have to bat. Monroe should be in the outfield, Cuddy should be at short, and Harris could still be the DH.

The bigger decision was not bringing Nathan back.

Livan still PHs. He had a long game against Colorado, but he probably could go an inning. If the Twisn don’t wrap it up in the 11th or 12th they don’t deserve to win this.

Garza hit in Chicago last season when Redmond was hurt early.

So, Garza this year…Korecky this year. Did any other team in an AL park have the pitcher get an AB between then and when the Twins did then and tonight?

Royster says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

SS’s are often the best player on the field therefore many major leaguers are SS’s at one point or another because they are usually the best players on there high school teams.

Mike says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:44 pm

Mike,

It was a hit to RF.

T says:

Mike, Korecky’s hit was a bullet between the 2b and 1b.

Speaking of Cuddy as a SS. Remember at one point when Morneau was a catching prospect?

Did he get any time with the Twin behind the plate? I can swear I saw him in gear once. May have been Spring Training though.

i don’t care how this game turns out or what anyone says…it’s absolutely irresponsible managing to have a pitcher bat in an AL game…

and why? so we could have .160 hitting Mike Redmond (who also is the second catcher) bat for Adam Everett.

That’s absolutely, 100 percent dumb.

Just as dumb as giving a singles hitter the green light on 3-0 (Mauer in first inning)

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

If Garza did it last year, I guess the next one happens in 2009. It’s becoming commonplace.

Bass all alone in the dugout. Livan should go down there and hang out.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:01 pm

Winning run or not, what a night for Korecky. In a game where none of the bullpen (or the starter) wanted to take care of things, he comes in and does everything you could ask of him

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:01 pm

“Craig, Garza took two or three ABs against Chicago, but didn’t get a hit.”

Okay. All cleared up. Now I got it.

Why were the OF so shallow??

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:11 pm

So Howie Clark knocks in Carlos Gomez to win it for Bobby Korecky.

And none of those three were in the game to begin with.

Go figure.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:12 pm

I have no idea dan. Was it one of those “It’s Clark…play up!”

Shaun says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

So will Gardy have the pair to use Korecky more and give Clark some credit for that?

Mudcat says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:13 pm

I wanted to see Livan do that.
That was anti-climatic.
But we’ll sure take the win!

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:15 pm

Now that i think about it, it’s better if Clark does it.

If Livan takes the plate, does he become the pitcher of record? Or is he the PH until he actually takes the mound?

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:16 pm

!!!!

On his game winning hit, Clark rounded first and second before finally being mobbed by his team on the way to 3rd.

You know, with that shaving cream beard he kind alook like Radke now.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

T,

How many guys were on base when Howie got that hit? Am I missing something here? Were there two guys on or three?

Jason says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:19 pm

well i love the win of course but Gardy has to be embarrassed by this one….but in the end, it was an even more foolish move by Ron Washington in walking Mike Lamb.

I don’t know what’s crazier…Bobby Korecky batting in this game or Mike Lamb being intentionally walked…both managers were asleep at the wheel on those moves…

Gardy and the dysfunctional offense that is the Minnesota Twins gets a reprieve for one night.

Don’t blame this one on Morneau…a rare off night for him, but guess what, we better get used to it if they continue to offer him no protection in Michelle Cuddyer…I will take credit for calling his offseason payday as a prelude of bad things to come.

Whew…we won…

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:20 pm

Craig, Gomez on 2nd and Lamb at 1st.

There were two out as well I believe.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Jason, can anybody also figure out why the OF was playing so shallow? They’re saying it was to cutoff Gomez…

Royster says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

2, GoGo on 2nd, and Lamb on 1st.

BC Beneke says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:21 pm

Cuddyer was a SS as a draft pick. I have a PSA 10 Bowman Chrome card on my desk here, and I have a PSA 9 Morneau Bowman Chrome Gold Morneau in full catcher’s gear. On the back of the card it’s funny, it talks about him being the best Canadian hitting prosepct since Larry Walker, but with a lot more power.

Cuddy also pitched a perfect game as a high schooler where he struck out all 21 hitters he faced.

Royster says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

1 out

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

And to wrap up my feelinsg on tonight’s game.

For all the stuff the Twins did to give games away in the past week, it was nice to finally have one given back.

Jason says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:23 pm

No kidding T…and let’s face it, if Lamb makes the second out like we all know he would have…the D is playing at normal depth with 2 away…

Nice to see Bobby Korecky have a huge night in the Bigs.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:24 pm

“Cuddy also pitched a perfect game as a high schooler where he struck out all 21 hitters he faced.”

???

Wowza.

Royster says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

I assume the outfield was playing shallow because a hit that bounces to an outfielder automatically scores Gomez, where as if they’re playing deep a fly to the warning track might score him as well if they use a cutoff.

T says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Well, I’m exhausted tonight. And I’m driving the carpool this week so I don’t get to the extra sleep.

G’night all. Let’s hope tomorrow’s game can be a more normal win.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:25 pm

Okay, never mind. I thought for some reason, Gomez was on third. Washington made the right move, if Gomez was on second.

If Gomez would have been on third, Washington would have walked Clark, also. That’s what I was confused about.

There was one out, when Howie got the hit.

Mudcat says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:26 pm

Didn’t Lamb have a walk off’er last week?
But I’m with you, Jason.

BC Beneke says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:27 pm

Give the game ball to Bobby Korecky! First major league hit, first major league win, and a 34 year old journeyman scrub gets the game winning double. This is why baseball is the greatest sport in the world. Any play, any day you can be the hero or the goat. There are very few times in the NBA where they have to deplete the lineup and the 12th guy can win a game, and in the NFL… how many times is that 3rd string offensive lineman, or 3rd string QB going to be the guy to save the day? Only in baseball is everyone inmportant 1-25… even the guy that replaces Nick Punto as the least important player on the planet gets to be a hero!

Royster says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:29 pm

They wanted to set up the DP, since they didn’t respect Clark’s bat, and if they get Clark, then the pitcher is up. It was a good strategy despite Lambs avg.

Gardy says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:33 pm

I love caulk, it’s great for plugging holes, I know all about that

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:35 pm

One thing about Howie, you know the guy won’t complain about lack of playing time.

I think he can be a handy bench player. He’s capable of drawing a walk, and he puts the bat on the ball, rarely striking out.

Gardy says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:36 pm

I would have brought cuddy in to pitch in the 16th

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:37 pm

“They wanted to set up the DP, since they didn’t respect Clark’s bat, and if they get Clark, then the pitcher is up. It was a good strategy despite Lambs avg.”

Correct.

Cuddy says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:38 pm

Not swingin a bat for 2 weeks sure did throw off my rhythm

PD says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

Lamb — .393 RISP. Walking him sets up the potential inning-ending DP with career journeyman Howie Clark at the plate. And even if he pitches to and retires Lamb, they’re still playing shallow with two outs to keep Gomez from scoring on a single.

In other words, lay off Ron Washington. Classic second-guess.

Alexi says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:40 pm

I was lookin for a fastball to turn on and there it was. Ole!!

bufftwins says:

May 19th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

We score 7 runs and our 4-5 hitters Morneau and Cuddyer go 0 for 10. Great job by Korecky on the mound and getting that base hit. If I’m him, I hope I never get another big league at bat and finish my career at 1,000.
Boof would have won the game, had he not made a god awful throw on that double play ball in the 7th. How much longer will Rincon last? Howie Clark!
Who could have predicted that a week ago. Gotta love baseball.

sane says:

May 20th, 2008 at 12:10 am

“can anybody also figure out why the OF was playing so shallow?”

I think it had something to do with the winning run (Gomez, the blur) being on 2nd base where a single will certainly score him UNLESS it is fielded within 200 ft. of home plate.

T says:

May 20th, 2008 at 7:05 am

With the Twins’ luck baserunning the past few series, I wasn’t sure how trigger happy they’d be on a single to try and score Gomez.

Quite frankly, I’m glad the inning went the way it did. There could’ve been some VERY ugly moments at home plate on a single by Lamb.

Gomez gets to essentially trot into home, no worried about a play and sliding and collisions. :)

Also, like I said last night…did anybody see the replay of Clark after he got his hit. He took off for first, then when he saw it get over the CFer’s head he actually dropped his head and started running full out.

I think he forgot what inning it was. Because he rounded second and was halfway to third when somebody finally caught up to him for the celebration.

Cuddyer should not be in the lineup at all due to the fact that he is only hitting .226 and no home runs. Denard Span should be the Twins Right Fielder because he hits for a much higher average than Cuddyer, is just as good of a fielder, and has tremendous base stealing ability. Cuddyer, who should not have been signed to a long term contract, should probably be sent to Rochester. He has the mentality of a little league player and is vastly over-rated as an outfielder.
