Everett headed back to DL

Posted on May 22nd, 2008 – 11:12 AM
By Joe Christensen

Twins shortstop Adam Everett is headed back to the disabled list, Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said. Everett is experiencing more pain in his right shoulder.

The team will announce a roster move after the game.

Brendan Harris is playing shortstop today. Gardenhire did not rule out the possibility of the team promoting Trevor Plouffe or Luke Hughes from Class AA New Britain, though the team’s reports say those two aren’t ready for the big leagues right now, and there would be great reluctance to rush them.

With Matt Tolbert and Nick Punto also on the DL, this is a tough decision, as the Twins’ middle-infield choices at Class AAA Rochester are limited.

Update (12:53): Everett was going to see a team doctor before the game. There has been no report yet, but Everett will likely have another MRI exam.

Rangers (23-25)

1. Ian Kinsler, 2B

2. Michael Young, SS

3. Josh Hamilton, Rf

4. Milton Bradley, DH

5. David Murphy, LF

6. Gerald Laird, C

7. Marlon Byrd, CF

8. Ramon Vazquez, 3B

9. Chris Shelton, 1B (those last two batters were flip flopped)

Starting pitcher: RH Vicente Padilla

Twins (23-23)

1. Carlos Gomez, CF

2. Brendan Harris, SS

3. Michael Cuddyer, 1B

4. Justin Morneau, DH

5. Delmon Young, LF

6. Craig Monroe, RF

7. Mike Redmond, C

8. Mike Lamb, 3B

9. Alexi Casilla, 2B

Starting pitcher: RH Livan Hernandez

Metrodome. First pitch: 12:10 p.m.

Can Christian Guzman be bought?

That was an awfully expensive head first dive into first base, Matt Tolbert.

what the hell is cuddy doing at 1b and morneau dh….cuddy is only ready for “pine time”….something about his fat contract has made the joking, magic boy of the twins a real tragic comedy show in rt field and at the plate….what a joke…. - let me say cuddy, its time to throw away all the magic, comedy, and twins celeb status and take your gd career serious, because youre nothing but a waste of uniform and roster spot as of now……im not quite sure why cuddy seems to be getting a pass in this pathetic twins situation the last week and half

BoogieNeedsAGoal says:

So what if Hughes or Plouffe aren’t ready. They are a 1 or 2 week stop-gap at best until Punto is healthy. Let’s see what they can do…

Brent says:

I know alot of people freak out about the decisions Gardy makes, but something that cannot be questioned is his hopeless lineups during day games. Robertson pitches Saturday, and Verlander Sunday I am sure Monroe could hit in those games, why not put Kubel in RF. If Mauer is not playing than you cannot have Kubel on the bench as well.

gobbledygookguy and Jason, I wrote of starting a “Bring Back Guzzie” movement yesterday, but am unwilling to spend time making the buttons and signs and hats and what-not. Will you be willing to do it?

gobbledygookguy says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 11:34 am

this has the feeling of livan getting lit up and padilla 2 hitting us. so it will probably be the opposite.

The Hawk says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 11:36 am

So giving Morneau a day at DH for the first time this year. Guy has to get a breather some time. No problems with that. As for Cuddy, going on the DL a week into the season sure can’t help a guys swing and timing. Especially when it’s a hand injury and you can’t swing the bat. Who is to say his hand still isn’t hurting. Cut the guy some slack.

The Block says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 11:37 am

Maybe Jenny Finch will get a callup.

Max says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 11:38 am

Spot on Brent. First thing I noticed when looking at the lineup was KUBEL’S absence. Not the Cuddyer at 1B or Morneau at DH or Mauer on the Bench or Monroe in RF. Jason Kubel is a potent bat and needs to be in there.

gobbledygookguy says:

jenny finch throws harder than livan on a bad day. looks better every day!
call her up 8th inning setup gal!

Bill Brasky says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 am

I saw the Everett thing coming. His throw to the plate last night on a relay was awful. He was just on the edge of the infield and he threw a 3 hopper to Mauer and it was off line. A big league SS needs to make that throw in the air with ease.

Bill Brasky says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 11:49 am

Isn’t Jenny Finch’s husband in AAA.

Casey Daigle??

Gardy’s been making a lot of headscratching decisions lately. Like letting Blackburn get shellacked when he was obviously gassed and frustrated yesterday.

jeff says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 12:02 pm

Why is Harris at short & Cassilla at 2nd? I thought they’d recognized that 2nd wasn’t Alexi’s position. He’s proving it again. On the other hand, he’s got a shortstop’s arm.

Adam S says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 12:04 pm

Buscher needs to get called up. He is hitting very well in AAA, would be an upgrade over lamb at 3rd and he can play some 1B and maybe even 2B. Or DH him.

Jason says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 12:07 pm

Agreed Adam S but it doesn’t really address their need (middle infield).

I think Buscher should replace Lamb just out of principle alone.

Rob L says:

Everett is lucky he was sent to the DL rather than the Waiver Wire. Someone please enlighten me. What value does he bring to the club? Offensively the guy is a black hole of outs, and his defense (for which he is supposedly lauded) doesn’t appear to me to be anything too special - especially with the bad wing. Punto would be a better every day shortstop.. wow, I can’t believe I just said that… (and so it has come to this).

If Gardenhire and Smith have a collective brain, Everett will not be long for the club. He’ll join Boone and Batista in the ‘Failed Experiment Club’.

Jason says:

I agree with Rob L as well…

to all you Grizzly Adamses out there, just know the following: You will flip out every day like a petulant adult child about some kind of miniscule detail of each game. At the end of the season, this team will have played .500 baseball all year, just like pretty much everyone predicted before the season started. then, you’ll latch onto another sport, probably the Vikings, and you’ll find someone else to pick on(probably a minority of some sort), and you’ll blow a gasket every day through that season too. repeat every season until you die. your opinions both suck and are unimportant, and you’re too stupid to realize the “big picture” of your overall idiocy in life.

Jeez, you’d think Cuddyer must have run over mj1’s dog or slept with his wife based on that vitriol. Take a deep breath and try not to take it too personally, buddy. The guy’s in a slump — he didn’t shoot your grandma. He’s had enough productive years here to to allow him some slack and let him work through it. I wouldn’t have moved him to the 3-hole, but hey, he got a base hit in his first AB.

As for Guzman, he’s actually having a dynamite year for the Nats. They won’t go trade for him of course, but it’s not “retarded” to suggest that he’d be a better option than what the Twins have available right now.

When Casilla came up, Gardy said he’d be playing mostly shortstop. Now that Everett is injured, Casilla is still at second and Harris is at short with his limited range. Tough to figure Gardy sometimes. (Understatement of the year.)

I have to say, the first year of Billy the Kid Smith isn’t turning out so well. His manager won’t play the “offensive upgrades” he signed in the offseason. Delmon Young is a soft-hitting Joe Mauer clone who can never get a day off because, well, the Rays played him every game last year.

I would just like to say that Cuddles is 2 for 3 so far today, and has been hitting better since that 0-fer where he stranded 9 RISP. I would also like to point out that Morneau stranded almost as many in that same game. Not trying to make a point or anything, just saying…

Rocky Simons says:

Whey do the Twins and Gardy insist upon ‘four’ middle infielders yet only two players for the two corner spots? It seems that you would have three players for the two middle infield positions and three players for the two corner positions, respectively…..
That way Brian Buscher should be the man called up for the light hitting (and fielding)Everett. Buscher could spell Lamb who is struggling and relieve some at first base, if needed.
He certainly can’t do any worst than Lamb fielding or hitting. Buscher is batting .312 at AAA Rochester with 6 homers.
Call up Buscher and give him some solid at-bats………

Jason says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 1:58 pm

wow, what are you saying, JP?

How dare you try to compare the post contract garbage we’ve had from Cuddy to what Morneau’s been giving us (also post contract, I might add).

Two singles (including one infield single where the play should’ve been made) does not equate to signs of breaking out of it if you ask me.

WildMN says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 2:00 pm

Jason,
You seem to have a huge man crush on the big Canadian… I’m just saying that Cuddles wasn’t the only one with issues in that game. I wasn’t really doing a comparision. I think anytime a player is getting on base is a good sign, regardless of how he get’s there. You’re hating on him because he’s not hitting, and then when he does you’re hating becasue they’re “only singles.” Perhaps I’m wrong - lord knows I’m not an expert…

*Sigh*

I think I am done with you Jason… I need to find a new campaign manager for the BBG (Bring Back Guzzie) movement.

Jason says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 2:12 pm

well i would never use the term ‘man crush’, but yes, Justin Morneau, in case you haven’t noticed, is the only star hitter we have on this club. To cite his plate appearances yesterday in the face of Cuddyer’s mess this year is a laughable joke on a number of levels…

Including this level: Maybe Morneau would’ve had better at-bats last night if he wasn’t backed up by a .217 hitter with 1 HR.

Morneau can’t be happy about that 3BB and a HBP this inning, against a staff that’s walked more guys than anyone in the league. They’re right around .500 with a team that isn’t playing very well. there is a lot of youth. There are a lot of guys that can only get better. This is a team that shoudln’t be close to .500. This is a rebuilding year. It’s a long season. It’s too much work to be negative every day.

WildMN says:

To answer your question T, yes. And that is why you don’t walk a guy batting .230 to face the teams best hitter. DP situation or not.

Of course, had Mauer hit that same single they wouldn’t have counted.

GGG,
those coments were good around here 3 weeks ago, just as Morneau had lost it when the season started, Delmon was a complete bust with no XBH’s and now Cuddy is the biggest joke the Twins have ever resigned. I can’t believe it, but I’d rather Punto was around so people can just rag on him and leave the rest of the players alone.

Obvious move by Gardy…no guarantee we’ll have a 10th inning…have to go with your best pitcher in the ninth

Other way around snepp…they count when Mauer does it too; what doesn’t count is the occasional HR to go with his seeing eye singles and the RBI he gets as a result (on pace for about 65 of those this year fyi)…why don’t they count? Cause they never happen.

Macri bats right-handed. he can platoon with Lamb. Buscher and Lamb are the same player, so there is no reason to have both of them up. Macri, like Buscher, is on the 40 man roster. I actually like this call. Macri can also play all four infield positions, at least a little bit.

“whos Sergio Santos”

former first round pick of the D-Backs who was a good hitter up until about AA. He was part of (I believe) the Troy Glaus trade, so he went to Toronto. He’s a huge SS who could play 3B (he’s like 240 pounds). He’s never hit at AAA, but the team seems to really still like his tools. I think he was worth a shot, but nothing to be too excited about yet.

SethSpeaks says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:28 pm

I’m just not a fan of Buscher. He’s worse in the field than Lamb and really was never much of a hitter in the minor leagues until last year. He really doesn’t have a lot of power. I still believe in Lamb and think he’ll be just fine. Buscher just doesn’t excite me… although I did say all offseason that I would be fine with a Buscher/Macri platoon at 3B if there wasn’t a better option. I still think Lamb is a better option.

the 24 Ks in 99 at bats isn’t promising esp. with only 7 walks.

Flip side- Buscher 17 k’s , 13 walks in 125 abs.

I understand the move esp. that Macri can play multiple positions and his defense is far better, to me it really hasnt been the hitting that has cost us games but fundamental defense.

Peter North says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:35 pm

They won’t cut Lamb loose after a 2 year signing, I think they will just keep throwing him out there, not really a lot of other options right now with Tolbert and Punto hurt.

Can Macri play 1st and 3rd?

Here is why you have to be optimistic with the Twins chances this year:

Lamb- 0 HR
Mauer- O HR
Cuddyer- 0HR
Young- 0 HR

although Mauer is already contributing offensivly, you have got to believe Lamb,Cuddyer, and Young will heat up. I think we are a young team that can only improve in starting pitcing and offensively. I just am not sure about the bull pen though, except for Nathan, there is no one to rely on.

mike wants wins says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Tyler, I agree that Young and Cuddeyer cannot be this bad all year, but I don’t agree that the team is young when you categorize players, and don’t just take their average age.

LF and CF are definitely young, and so young they really bring the average age down. But, 3B, SS, 2B, RF, C are all pretty much in the prime of their careers (or past it) in terms of age. They also don’t have any really old guys to raise the average age.

Now, if Casilla takes over at SS or 2B, they are younger in terms of experience, no doubt.

I had no issue with the intentional walk would have wished a better 3-2 pitch to hamilton but he did take an outside pitch to opo, lot of woulda shoulda coulda on here. Everyone needs to be realistic, the Twins are not a contendor. We will continue to see ups and downs and because the team is young and really no leader established the lows will be very low and the highs will be very high.

Andy says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:58 pm

cuddyer made an error that led to an unearned run and struck out twice (one was the last out of a 1-run game) and it was one of his best games of the year. he really has been pathetic this year.

May 22nd, 2008 at 4:00 pm

I never said that the Twins would be a contender, and I agree that they’re young and will make mistakes. But Gardy is a veteran manager and he needs to make better decisions than that. Ramon Vazquez is the Nick Punto of the Rangers and Gardy decided to walk him, allowing Hamilton to even come to bat in the 10th.

twinsfan32 says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 4:01 pm

Gardy sucks. Why not walk Hamilton with two outs and nobody on base?? That guy has been hitting everything this season and this series so why not walk him?

Mn Mike says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 4:03 pm

i think cuddy is trying to hard, seems the Twins management have annoited him the leader, press guy, yada yada. To me cuddy is best when he is in the shadows of others. Looks like he is so worried about screwing up that he is. I think (fingers crossed) he will be fine.

Mn Mike says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 4:09 pm

So then in the 11th it was ok for Hamilton to hit the HR? They got out of the inning and that is what the move was ment to do. They pitched Hamilton safe for 5 pitches then on the 3-2 the pitch got to much of the plate and he drilled it opo for the HR. It happens, it wasnt gardys fault, catcher setup wide and the pitcher just missed the spot and got burned for doing it.

Mn Mike says:
