Macri gets promotion from Rochester

Posted on May 22nd, 2008 – 3:15 PM
By Joe Christensen

The Twins just announced that they will recall infielder Matt Macri from Class AAA Rochester, with Adam Everett going on the disabled list with a right shoulder strain. The move will be made after today’s game against Texas.

Macri gets the nod because he is on the 40-man roster. He has batted .263 with one home run and nine RBI in 29 games for Rochester. He has played just three games at shortstop this season.

I do like this decision, Macri can play 3rd, SS and 2nd, Their are Slim Pickings down in Rochester, Buscher cant play SS or 2nd, only a 3rd guy, good decision to call up Macri, Put Hughes in AAA, He looks good in AA but not ready for the Big Leagues yet.

Macri was disappointing in the spring, but hit pretty well until being injured at Rochester. He has some pop in his bat and can platoon with Lamb at third. Just a little return from Ramon Ortiz!

So does this mean Más Casilla?

SethSpeaks says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:31 pm

They just have to send someone to Rochester. The Red Wings have been bad, but the organization has left them short handed much of the season. There are plenty of guys at AA that are ready for the challenges of AAA.

SethSpeaks says:

BC - as Brent said, this will be Macri’s first big league promotion. I agree with you. I have no problem with new guys getting opportunities.

Jason says:

well bottom line is this puts pressure on Casilla…who Gardy never intended to be an everyday player when they called him up.

Nice going, Bass.

“ok now i need to bitch why in the hell can’t Nathan pitch more then one inning?”

Because Gardy uses whatever players give him the best chance for a win. At least that’s what I was told the last time I questioned Gardy.

Bill Brasky says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:46 pm

Because his arm will fall off if he throw more than one inning regardless of pitch count. Gardy told me that himself.

The Hawk says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:51 pm

How many innings do you want Nathan to pitch?? Got a series with Detroit coming up and we might need him there. I can imagine it now, Nathan not available to close a game because he pitched 2 innings in a non save situation. Boy would Gardy have messed up then.

Mudcat says:

Jimmy B.:
3.89 is not that good. what if all our pitchers had 3.89’s………….oh wait.

The Hawk says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:53 pm

The problem is Bass let the one guy beat him that he couldn’t. Haven’t they noticed that guy can hit the ball a ton and you can’t let him do it with one swing.

mike wants wins says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Lots of other closers pitch more than 1 inning, in that situation or in others. Stiffs even, like that Rivera guy for example.

SethSpeaks says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Mulvey’s 2-6 with a 4.36 ERA on the season.

In his last 5 starts, he is 0-5 with an 8.10 ERA. He hasn’t thrown more than 5.0 innings in any of those starts. In 20 innings, he has give up 31 hits and 13 walks. I would say that constitutes “has been pitching really poorly for the last month”.

BC of ND says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:54 pm

Hawk how mad are you that we lost a game we had a chance to win today when you don’t know if he’ll be needed at all this weekend?

Carlos needs to be sent down. I know he already hit for the cycle and all but if the guy can’t go 5-5 in a game what good is he?

Macri has been playing second base since Clark’s call-up, so Casilla can move over to SS if Gardy wants/needs to later in a game.

Plus, of course,Macri also plays third.

mike wants wins says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 3:57 pm

I gotta agree with Seth on this one, Mulvey started out pretty nicely, but has not done well this month.

I wanted Plouffe or Hughes called up, guys with a legit MLB future (or at least who have teased into thinking they have a legit future as a starter).

Macri’s career in the minors screams backup, mediocre hitter (which, lets face it, mediocre hitter in the majors is still pretty good), and decent glove. He’s not a long term answer (unless his minor league stats are not predictive) to any question other than “if Matt Tolbert isn’t your utility fielder when Punto is gone, who is?”

Rivera hasn’t pitched in that situation all year. He has came in with a lead or in a blowout for work. He has 2 save where he came in in the 8th for a batter.
And as far as Gomez, I post that for all the haters from about 3 weeks ago. It seemed popular then, it’s funny how things change.

Jason says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 4:02 pm

Agreed Hawk, Bass has to be more careful and not give Hamilton anything to hit in that at-bat…and it cost us the game.

Hmm, funny how that works, a homerun wins it for the opposition.

I see a few more guys got added to my Gomez bandwagon today. I’ve been driving it since ST. Got kind of empty in April. Nice to see we have a pretty full bus again. I made the call in April that he would be an All Star in 2010. The kid wants to do what it takes to be a super star. It’ll be more 2 steps forward and 1 back… but the ceiling is really high for this kid.

gobbledygookguy says:

with everything said, players cut, shot, sent to gitmo, injuries, vavra as hitting coach and the disabling loss of punto we still are better than nearly all of us thought at the beginning of the season.

The Hawk says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 4:15 pm

After watching this series, Josh Hamilton is as good a hitter as there is going right now. Someone had better find a hole in that swing soon. Gotta like that he can take the low and away pitch out to left, makes it just look too easy. I wonder if trading him isn’t what got Krivsky fired. Now they’re stuck with Junior and Dunn to unload too.

Brent says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Time to give LAHEY and M. COMEZ a shot at the pen.

I miss the days of our bull pen being ale to shut down a team for a couple of innings. Now you can almost count on at least 1-2 runs if they have to pitch more than 3 innings.

Brent says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 4:22 pm

do you think we could have gotten J. Hamilton for Garza?

Brent says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 4:23 pm

We would have tried to make him an opposite field slap hitter, relaying more on his speed than on his power.

The Hawk says:

Hamiltons opposite field slappers leave the park. Both his homers were LF jobs. Garza would have gotten us Hamilton last winter. I don’t think it would now knowing what he’s done. I don’t know if Volquez would either even as good as he’s been.

With the money these guys make, why not have personal hitting coaches for each of these guys? Personal trainers. Personal drivers, so they don’t get in trouble.

The personal drivers thing might have saved JR Rider’s career if done early on. What a waste — but, I digress.

Get some power hitting instructors for the big boys; get some Vavra instruction for the others. Get some baserunning advice from a Molitor-type coach. Get bunting instructions from a Carew-type.

Find someone to teach Gomez how to bounce/slide more gently on the dome turf so he doesn’t kill himself before August with his incredible desire and daring.

Get a sage for Gardy to talk to…

I’m a big Seth fan, but “kind of made up” and “shows exactly” should not be used in the same analysis. Kevin says:

Yeah, great call-up, Gardy. Nothing like replacing garbage with garbage. Can’t wait to see how the draft goes in a few weeks when they take some slap-happy, lead-off hitter type again that fits their “style of play” over the legitimate power-hitting threat on the fast-track to the big leagues (much like when they passed on Manny Ramiriz and Chase Utley). Where’s that Draftnik poster this year? Time to open some draft-related discussion.

YOUNGS SWING LOOKS VERY PATHETIC AND IT IS HARD TO BELIEVE HE WAS CHOSEN FIRST OVERALL IN THE 2003 DRAFT. HOWEVER, I WILL POINT OUT THAT IT TOOK HAMILTON ALMOST 8 YEARS TO GET TO THE MAJOR LEAGUES BECAUSE OF DRUGS AND ALCOHOL. WE CAN ONLY HOPE THAT YOUNG CAN DEVELOP INTO THAT TYPE OF PLAYER. ANOTHER TINY INFIELDER WITH NO POWER AND NO CHANCE OF MAKING IT IN THE BIGS. I NEVER THOUGHT I WOULD SAY THIS BUT, I MISS PUNTO! CUDDYER NEEDS TO GIVE SOME OF THAT MONEY BACK… HE IS AWFUL!

Hughes ought to be called-up; after all, he’ll be going to Triple-A now anyhow. Moreover, with the draft less than two weeks away, you find out now if can handle big-league pitching. If the indication is that he can, they’ll have no need to draft a slap-happy 3rd baseman or a slap-happy 2nd baseman who fits their small-ball criteria since Hughes has a few years under his belt already of small-ball bootcamp and therefore should fit right in with this bunch.

Sorry about the Gardy inference… we’re all quite familiar with the bad case of priapism that you suffer from on that subject.

In “Close and Late” situations, Delmon Young is hitting .333/.355/.400.

With bases loaded, he’s 3-7 with six RBI.

Has Football Started Yet? says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 6:38 pm

What does “Close and Late situation” mean? Not disagreeing with it (and its not like .333 is all that high anyhow considering sac’s don’t count against BA and runners at third w/less two outs are expected to be driven in), but am just wondering where that ’stat’ comes from? He was gotten as a run-producer, not a table-setter, and his RBI’s seem a little low for that stat.

snepp says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Close And Late - results in the 7th inning or later with the batting team either ahead by one run, tied or with the potential tying run at least on deck.

Per ESPN’s glossary.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Macri has been out, injured, most of his career….so he should fit right in.
Hopefully they can squeeze a week out of him until Punto returns.

Today’s ballplayers are too heavy, and thick muscled. I think that’s where the injuries come from. They are too muscle bound, from over training.

Whatever happened to all the good ballplayers between 150 and 180 lbs.? Bulging muscles isn’t a good build for a baseball player. Skinny, with soft lean muscles is the way to go.

Carlos G says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 7:33 pm

Craig,
Yea, maybe. And, maybe if we can stop sliding head first into bases. Or, stop throwing baseballs. Or, stop slamming into fences or bouncing our faces off of dome turf (wait, I guess we need this last stuff).

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 7:45 pm

I would agree with Seth, that Lamb isn’t going anywhere. He is signed through 2009, to an unattractive contract, that no one will want.

Some of the other Twins players, with contracts expiring at the end of the season, may become more attractive to other teams, as the season wears on. A large part of their contracts will be paid, and what is remaining, might fit into the budget of other teams.

The Twins need to trade for some middle infield depth. If the Twins could trade Kubel, Monroe, and Harris, for some middle infielders, who can catch the ball, they shouldn’t hesitate. They aren’t going to get any star players, but maybe something better than what they have.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Carlos G.

It’s an observation about baseball players in general, not necessarily specific to the Twins. There are exceptions of course; that is, muscular guys who are durable, and lean guys who are fragile.

That said, I still do think that too many players get too thick and tight. They should back off the weight training, and lose some weight.

cmathewson says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 8:18 pm

Lamb against lefties this year:

.053 /.053 /.105 /.158

I’d say he needs a platoon partner. Matt Macri is the best right-handed hitting third baseman we have.

Also, I hope to never see Cuddyer at first and Monroe in right field again. Macri can play first when Morneau needs a day off the turf.

Carlos G says:

May 22nd, 2008 at 8:23 pm

BC Beneke says:

Next will be Plouffe or Hughes.

If Toby Gardenhire (who can’t field very well) is called up that will cause huge conflict in the clubhouse as Little Nicky Pun-terrible will have to share the bathroom Caulk, and will get sad.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 23rd, 2008 at 3:44 am

Lamb has had 19 AB against LH pitching. Gardy doesn’t care much for platooning. 19 AB won’t influence Gardy, but he probably plans to rest Lamb, once in awhile, against lefties, anyway. Gardy will take a look at Macri.

I’m not a Harris fan, but he should be better at SS than 2B. He can’t make the DP pivot when playing 2B. Coming across the bag from SS might be more natural for him. He has the arm to throw from the hole at SS. We will see.

When Punto returns, Howie could get the demotion, if Macri shows he has anything to offer.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 23rd, 2008 at 3:56 am

It would be funny if Gardy finds his best infield by accident.

Casilla at 2B, Harris at SS, Lamb and Macri at 3B and Punto the reserve.

Overall, probably no worse, and maybe better, than what he has had so far.

The New and Improved Craig says:

May 23rd, 2008 at 7:10 am

Seems strange listening to people wanting Cuddyer to be benched. For years I listened to people scream about Gardy, “jerking Cuddyer around”, whenever Gardy sat Cuddy down.

Cuddy, as of late, is playing a lot like he did years ago, when he often played second fiddle to Lew Ford, much to everyone’s dismay.

One of the big changes for Cuddyer, is that he is no longer in the sandwich, batting between Mauer and Morneau. That premium spot, helped Cuddyer to achieve some big RBI and Runs Scored tallies. Those days are over. It was all pretty silly to have Cuddyer batting cleanup. Gardy now has Mauer and Morneau in the 3-4 spots where they belong.

Cuddy saw a lot of fastballs before. Nobody wanted to walk him, and pitch to Morneau. Things have changed. Cuddy’s Achilles heal, has always been the slider away. With no hitters behind Cuddy to worry much about, pitchers can now be merciless. It’s a cruel world for Cuddy, outside the sandwich.

The question now is, whether Cuddy can adjust to life out in the cold, cruel world. Did Bill Smith ink a star player, or did he toss a monster contract, at a player with, “utility player”, skills? Time will tell.

“Sorry about the Gardy inference… we’re all quite familiar with the bad case of priapism that you suffer from on that subject.”

Gardy had nothing to do with it (I don’t even think his call is the final one when it comes to call-ups) I just get bored of “one-sided” conversations.

It’s hard to talk about how things can be fixed if nobody offers any suggestions.

Like sane pointed out a few nights ago…going by the fan conversations around here, all but maybe Mauer, Morneau, and Nathan have been cut, fire, demoted, released by this point, but we’ve got no idea who would be playing instead.

It’s like somebody who shouts: “Trade Rincon!” or “Trade Boof!” and leaves it at that.

It’s like, “Well…okay. For what?”

You may not be hot on Macri, and I respect that, but it gets to a point on here when it’s like “Well okay, we all agree on what doesn’t work…but anybody have any ideas as to what would?”

The prime example is the “Mauer batting 3rd” situation. I’ve gone over my take on that situation enough where I shouldn’t need to repeat it.

Not sure if anyone has posted this, but Saber Scouting has published a couple of scouting reports. 1. Tyler Robertson 2. Deolis Guerra

And where did this Hamilton guy come from? I try to follow other team’s leagues…and this guy seems to have just sprung up “overnight” this season.

I don’t think we’re talking about Hamilton/Garza if Young was producing like he did with Tampa, but it’d be interesting to have some way of knowing how Hamilton would be doing in a Twins uni this year.

Craig, I hope you’re wrong…though it looks more and more like that’s what’s happening.

They need to force somebody inbetween Mauer and Morneau. If Mauer gets on base as consistently as he does, then whoever hits next would likely get good pitching. Because they don’t want to put two on for Morneau.

I have a feeling Gardy wants to do it…but is worried that it’d get real ugly in the lineup real quick. And there may be concern that if Morneau benefits from Mauer in front of him that it may throw Morneau off.

And that would be most not good.

Long story short, REAL glad I’m not in Gardy’s shows at this point. I know what lineup I’d put together, but it’s one of those that’s a beauty in theory and likely a stinker in execution.

T,
“And where did this Hamilton guy come from? this guy seems to have just sprung up “overnight” this season.”

Josh Hamilton was the MUMBER ONE OVERALL DRAFT CHOICE in 1999 by the Devil Rays. He was picked AHEAD of Josh Beckett who was still the best HS pitcher I have ever seen.

His career was sidetracked and he was suspended for substance abuse and did not play for three years 2003-2005.
He was picked bt the Reds in 2007 Rule V draft (in which many teams could have picked him if they would have taken the risk of keeping him on their MLB 25-man roster)
After a great year with the Reds in 2007, he was traded to the Rangers for pitcher Edison Volquez in a big talent-for-talent trade.

Thanks for the background sane. I guess my asking “Who is Hamilton?” is like asking “Anybody heard of the Beatles?” ;)

T,
Considering Hamilton’s virtual disappearance from 2000 until 2007, it is not surprising that he was forgotten by a lot of people.

Agreed that Nathan should have pitched two innings yesterday, if not earlier in the week as well.

As far as the lineup debate goes, here’s what I’d propose. Feel free to debate or discuss:

Go-Gomez
Mauer (let’s face it, #3 hitter he ain’t)
Young (maybe he just needs better hitting behind him)
Morneau
Cuddyer
Kubel / Monroe (keep this platoon)
Harris (take’s the pressure off hitting)
Lamb / Punto (try out this platoon)
Casilla (adds a pirahna feel to it)
