DETROIT — It was Jason Kubel’s 26th birthday today. He celebrated by hitting a two-out, grand slam in the eighth inning off Francisco Cruceta that broke a 1-1 tie and lifted the Twins to a 6-1 victory.

Kubel has four career grand slams and two this season, with the last one coming April 9 at Chicago.

“I was just thinking I’ve got to put together a good at-bat and try and find a way to try to get the runner in,” Kubel said. “I was able to lay off some of his splitters and got a fastball to hit.”
