Has Livan lost his magic touch?

Posted on June 13th, 2008 – 12:18 AM
By Joe Christensen

CLEVELAND — Livan Hernandez voiced strong feelings after Thursday’s 12-2 loss to Cleveland. He apologized to the Twins’ organization for his recent performance and then vented about some comments he heard on the Cleveland telecast.

I tried summarizing this emotion in the game story. Some more perspective:

The key stat: After going 6-1 in his first nine starts for the Twins, Livan Hernandez is 0-3 with a 9.37 ERA in his past six starts.

Another eye opener: In those six starts, he has allowed 64 hits in 31 2/3 innings. That’s more than two hits per inning

Some historical context: He continued his threat to become the first pitcher to yield 300 hits in a season since Phil Niekro allowed 311 in 1979.

Hernandez has allowed 136 hits in 15 starts. At this pace — 9.1 hits per outing — Hernandez would allow 308 hits if he reaches his career average of 34 starts.

The quote: Manager Ron Gardenhire said, “Everything’s waist-up, and he can’t pitch like that. He’s not an overpowering guy.”

The telling example: Gardenhire mentioned the Shin-Soo Choo’s three-run homer in the third inning. It came with runners at second and third.

“I think he had first base open and Choo up, and you know, it’s a perfect opportunity for a veteran to make a guy chase,” Gardenhire said. “And he hangs a curve ball or a slider or whatever it was, and it goes out of the ballpark.

“Things like that — that’s not him. He knows how to pitch, and it’s just not working out for him right now.”

Note: I’ll check back with you with Friday’s lineups from Milwaukee. Remember, if you’re headed to Miller Park, send us your pictures for the weekend by clicking here.

I can’t imagine anyone is really all that surprised that Livan is pitching this horribly though, are they? This is much more the real Livan than the guy that started 6-1.

KeVin says:

We all should just be happy his crappy stuff lasted this long. The guy’s posted awful ERA’s, and peripheral numbers the past few seasons in the NL without a DH, what did we expect?

This “knows how to pitch” crap isn’t going to fly either. He may know how to pitch, ala Slowey, but at least Kevin has stuff to match his “know how.” Livan’s done because his stuff stinks, in addition to his location missing.

SLG OBA AVG
.541 .377 .357 - Hernandez
.443 .350 .311 - Blackburn
.410 .287 .254 - Baker
.538 .306 .275 - Slowey
.516 .364 .317 - Perkins

.396 .331 .254 - Garza
.396 .295 .244 - Santana

Stats are opposing batters.

Tough to deal away the “Ace” and the “Future Ace” and expect to compete.

Scott Baker has done a great job in limited action.

Hank says:

June 13th, 2008 at 3:18 am

Livan is getting hammered now that AL batters have had a look at him, just like everybody (except Billy Smith it seems) expected. The Twins will continue to give away every fifth game until Liriano is ready, at which point Livan will be dealt for an A ball pitcher in his teens.

Shaun says:

June 13th, 2008 at 4:34 am

I still don’t buy Garza as an “ace” or “future ace.” Maybe he could go by the name “Ace Garza” when his attitude continues to get him into trouble and he ends up making a living fighting Kimbo Slice in MMA.

Cool Aide running out? says:

June 13th, 2008 at 6:15 am

Garza does have ACE calibur stuff, just doesn’t have much MLB time in yet.
Livan should be released soon, the Twins have young guys that could be getting time in the rotation instead. I’m sure they can at least match the horrid outtings. Plus it is becomming more and more obvious that the Twins are not going to go anywere this year now that other teams are starting to hit stride. So the pipe dream is all but gone Billy Boy

Shaun says:

June 13th, 2008 at 7:46 am

I also think of an ace as having the correct mental makeup.

JayTEE says:

June 13th, 2008 at 8:03 am

An ace is a guy who can carry a team on his back, who can get a win to stop a team’s slump and who can be relied on take the mound in key games in high pressure situations (playoffs) and be counted on to come away with a win. No way Garza is there yet and you have to wonder whether he is wired right mentally to handle the pressure.

Peter says:

Livan hasn’t lost his magic touch, because he never had a magic touch. Just like Ortiz last year, he got off to a hot start against a league that hasn’t seen him much before, at a time of year when a lot of hitters were struggling. Now that teams have had a good look at him and offenses are producing better, he’s getting rocked.

Anyone in the Twins organization who is surprised by this course of events should be fired. Period.

so what’s everyone’s opinion on Billy Smith’s moves:
1)resigning Rincon for 2.4M
2)signing Livian H. for 5.5M

this is a Twin’s tradition signing veteran players that suck in hopes that they can “patch things up” is the thought that these veterans are used to give the young players time? did Billy Smith and the rest of the organization really think Livian would be the “ace” this guy has posted a ERA of almost 5.00 the past 2 years in the weak hitting NL!!! what evidence was there he would suddenly pitch better in the DH AL ??

CharlieMurphy says:

how about not wasting the money and just start the young pitchers? Twins are rebuilding for the next 2 years anyway.. I’ll never understand the team’s direction to sign vets will no productive value, that noone wants(otherwise they would cost too much for the cheap Twins to get them) maybe if Terry Ryan/Billy Smith had saved the money for a few years and then told Pohlad - “can we spend a little more this year and actually sign a GOOD free agent or be able to draft players in their rightful slot position instead of players taken 3 - 4 rounds early so we can sign them cheap”… wait this is Pohlad… nevermind

The New and Improved Craig says:

June 13th, 2008 at 8:56 am

The numbers may have been significantly better for Garza if he would be playing on the larger playing field in Minnesota VS Tampa Bay. One can see what the Metrodome has done to Delmon Young. The big LF area plus the tall baggie in RF has, predictably, neutered Young’s HR power. Tough to pitch in Tampa Bay, that’s a hitters ballpark.

jimmy bee says:

FIRE VAVRA & GARDY!!!! says:

Are we finally done signing Free Agents for their “veteran presence” and mentoring skills?
If I ever, again, read that as a motivation for signing a fading Free Agent, I am going to be hospitalized with the dry heaves.

The New and Improved Craig says:

June 13th, 2008 at 9:32 am

Billy Smith’s deals have to be called into question.

The Twins have seen a comedy of errors and mistakes in LF and CF this year. Young and Gomez have not displayed much as far as baseball instincts go. They are 22 year olds who often play like 17 year olds. Granted there is some raw talent there, but a knack for the game is something that rarely can be taught.

Monroe, Lamb, Everett, Hernandez: Four of the worst free agent signings ever. To be fair, Everett getting hurt was impossible to foresee. Those other three guys are predictably awful. What’s with that 2 year deal to Mike Lamb? What a head scratcher.

No other team is going to take the contracts of any four of these. Maybe someone will take Hernandez, Everett or Monroe, late in the year (September), when they only have a month left on their contract, but NOBODY will take Lamb. No team will want to pay that guy 3.1 mil next year. That’s what is left on his contract.

Smith’s last questionable deal is the signing to a long term deal of Michael Cuddyer. Cuddyer is now absolutely untradable, carrying that bloated, preposterous contract.

Without Morneau behind him, and Mauer in front of him, Cuddyer is mediocre at best. His marginal hitting has made his ineptness in the field, glaring this season. He has always been a bad fielder, this year it is just, much more obvious.

As far as the other players in the Santana and Garza deals, Harris will probably be released or traded, as soon as Punto, Everett and Tolbert heal up. Pridie is definitely not a major league ballplayer, and Humber and Mulvey don’t appear to be either. Guerra is the only real prospect, but he’s a long, long way from the majors.

D- for Bill Smith.

Last 14 days:

Young would hit .290 with 20 HR in Texas. He will hit .280 with 8 Hr in Minnesota this year. It has nothing to do with Vavra or the Twins hitting approach. Young is swinging exactly the same as he did in Tampa Bay.

it’s the cheap Pohlad way…

Well, I wouldn’t blame it on Pohlad. And I wouldn’t call it cheap. It’s just not prudent. Free agency is slim pickings these days. And it’s high risk. The only free agent pitcher who is doing much better is Kyle Lohse.

The Twins would be better off just trusting their development system and letting the kids play. That would be cheaper, true. But it can’t be any worse. And there’s a good chance it would be better. In the past four years, they have signed the following collection of hose heads:

Castro
Bastista
Ortiz
Ponson
White
Cirillo
Lamb
Everett
Hernandez

Only Ortiz paid off because they were able to get Macri for him. Castro yielded Roberts, who’s hurt and 10th on the depth chart. White actually played out his contract to the detriment of the team. Ponson, Cirilo and Batista yielded nothing. That’s $11 million in sunk cost for a third base prospect.

The three they signed this year cost $10 million and won’t likely return much in trade. In the process, they’re dragging the team out of contention.

thrylos98 says:

June 13th, 2008 at 9:54 am

I think that it is prudent to look at the following facts regarding Young:

a. He is 22
b. He is hitting .265/.314/.355 while Cuddyer is hitting .244/.300/.353. Currently the most under performing outfielder is Cuddyer not Young
c. at 22 years old, Morneau finished the season hitting .226/.287/.377

The New and Improved Craig says:

oh contrary! Pohlad is to blame.. he will not give the organization money to draft real players at the proper positions - hence Twins have a collection of minor league position players that suck - also why the team has to sign free agents from time to time to patch holes - but again not enough money to get a quality free agent(if there is such a thing)

Craig,

I knew I forgot some guys. We actually sent the Cubs a prospect for Nevin. Doh! As good as the Twins are at scouting other team’s minor leagues for diamonds in the rough (Casilla, Gomez, Liriano, etc.) they give it all back on bad scouting of major league players. By the numbers, the players they signed looked OK, with a few exceptions. Scouting should have told them that the players were due to drop off a cliff in ability as their bodies began to fall apart. I mean, they signed Rondell White and Ruben Sierra in the same offseason. Just about everybody knew these guys were on the juice when they were good. How was that missed by Twins evaluators (in White’s case, twice)?

FIRE VAVRA & GARDY!!!! says:

June 13th, 2008 at 10:16 am

thrylos that’s why I used the term “quality free agents” they are few and far between.. drafting and stocking minors with QUALITY position players instead of bag O’ of pitching prospects is what has doomed the Twins - and like I continue to point out, unless Pohlad allows org. to spend the money needed to get the quality draftees.. we will continue to see the PUNTOs of the world.. did everyone forget Twins orginally drafted PUNTO year before Phils did but Punto did not sign with Twins… :(

SS:

David Eckstein
Chris Gomez
Jerry Hairston Jr.
Cesar Izturis
Neifi Perez
Jorge Velandia

3B:

Geoff Blum
Russell Branyan
Jeff Cirillo
Morgan Ensberg
Pedro Feliz
Andy Gonzalez
Corey Koskie
Mike Lamb
Dallas McPherson
Abraham Nunez
Chris Woodward

Slim pickings and nobody would have made so much of a difference…

Again, the real problem with this team is pitching, and that’s where the focus of improvement should be

The New and Improved Craig says:

June 13th, 2008 at 10:20 am

.300 22 HR Age 20 Griffey Jr.
.358 36 HR Age 20 Alex Rodriguez
.320 22 HR Age 21 Cesar Cedeno
.340 27 HR Age 20 Al Kaline

This list goes on and on. Also, at these young ages, they threw to the right base, hit the cut-off man, ran the bases right and caught the ball if it was hit to them. With the exception of Griffey, they always made a strong effort. Delmon doesn’t do any of those things and he’s a lot older.

cmathewson says:

June 13th, 2008 at 10:23 am

Yeah, right. Like the Twins ever had a chance at A-Rod. The Yankees signed him before the free agent period. The only other third baseman was Pedro Feliz. He would have been better than Lamb. But most people rated Lamb higher going into this season.

It’s a bit of a crap shoot, which is my point. At least with guys like Macri and Buscher, you know what you have and you can have a better idea of how to approach the season with them. How many times will the Twins need to adjust their plans in May and June because the free agents they signed failed?

I don’t agree with the complete bashing of Smith at this point. He has had less than 1 year to fix the mess he inherited.

The Garza/Young trade, while not my preference, is the kind of trade this team needs to make. It just hasn’t worked out. But, seriously, who thought Delmon would play like this?

The Santana trade - gogomez. I would have done the Yankees or Red Sox trades, if they were there, but gogomez could be a good player some day. It is his first full year in the majors. comparing him to the list that the new craig posted is ludicrous. Craig posted 4 of the best players ever. If the Twins got their everday CF and LF in these two deals, then Smith fixed two gaping holes in one year.

As for Livan, Lamb, Monroe (that was a trade, btw, meaning they gave something up and paid him the big money instead of signing him cheaper after the Cubs cut him), and Everett. Livan was signed to give Duensing, Blackburn and others more time in the minors. While they “can’t be worse” that doesn’t mean they should be in the majors. Blackburn appears to have shown he belongs, but I’m not sure everyone else does. Lamb was a good risk, except for the two years part. He wasn’t bad in Houston, and rolling the dice on him made sense, the two year part did not. Everret - if you want young pitchers, and your manager values D, then you sign a guy that has been one of the best at his position for the last few years. He’s hurt. It happens. Monroe - stupid. There are plenty of .240 hitters available for less money.

I’m not sure what you all expected Smith to do in a couple of months to fix a team that had no 3B, 2B, LF, CF in its system, let alone in the majors. You have to give the guy a couple of years to see what he can do.

If gogomez and Young are legit, then fixing 2/3 of your OF in one year is pretty good.

Oh, almost forgot the Cuddy signing. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. he’s league average when he’s good, so don’t pay him that much. But, if you don’t pay him and let him go, you are cheap….

The New and Improved Craig says:

Gardy has always had a bad case of the ‘noids about playing the youngsters.

A washed up veteran always has a better chance with Gardy, than a young player.
If it wasn’t for all the injuries, Casilla would have never gotten a chance. He would have been 29 and still in AAA.

I agree with cmath, play the young

Bill Smith needs to just say no to Gardy and quit bringing in the old wash outs. Every off-season they hall in some more. Gardy loves and respects these guys, but can’t stand the kids.

The Gomez deal isn’t so bad, because once Pohlads wouldn’t put up the money to keep Johan, Smith had few options. He decided to get a player rather than take the 2 draft picks. That’s fine, though the 2 picks might have been better.

“Also does Dy have any foot speed while in the outfield cause everything goes right over his head.”

Not being able to go back on the ball, prevents errors. If you get a glove on it, you could be charged with an error.

The other thing Delmon does well is, instead of diving for the ball, he slides into like it was a base, feet first. This also prevents errors. If the ball bounces off his glove, it could be an error.

I also thought about Al Newman - except he left on bad terms. he wanted to hold players accountable for their level of play and improvement or lack thereof

cmathewson says:

June 13th, 2008 at 11:44 am

Right now the Garza/Bartlett/Morlan for Young/Harris/Pridie deal looks bad. But it’s too early to tell who will win that one. Garza could develop that nerve problem again. Bartlett is old for his level of experience. Morlan is not the prospect everyone thought he was. But Young, Harris, and especially Pridie need to pick it up before we can say it’s at all good for the Twins.

Pridie is hitting like he did two years ago, which is really bad (.222/.263/.341 with 68 Ks in 261 ABs). He’s about to get passed by Martin on the depth chart, leaving him out of consideration for even a bench job in the majors.

cmathewson says:

June 13th, 2008 at 11:46 am

he wanted to hold players accountable for their level of play and improvement or lack thereof

I don’t know the true story, but I suspect it centered on fundamentals. When Gardy’s Mini Me is the most fundamentally unsound player ever to don a Twins uniform, it’s tough to be a coach under him.

jimmy bee shant says:

June 13th, 2008 at 11:50 am

cmathewson I just don’t like it when people make assumptions about getting a player because a sibbling or the father was good. Then they have to use the word potential to as a loophole everytime they are reffered to. I believe each person is different. Look in golf at Jack Nicklaus and his son.

Gus says:

Oh, c’mon Craig, who expected Young to be a Griffey/A-Rod type player. Why not throw Ty Cobb and Mickey Mantle’s stats in there, too? I think the Morneau comparison above is a bit more realistic. Not that I expect Mornewau numbers either, but I’d say it’s still too early to say Delmon is a total bust. Then again, under Vavra’s tutelage, I really don’t expect much.

The New and Improved Craig says:

The New and Improved Craig says:

June 13th, 2008 at 12:19 pm

Gus,

When the trade was made people were saying Young was going to be hitting .300 with 30 plus HR. One guy who called me an “idiot” when I suggested Delmon would hit 8-9 HR playing in the Metrodome, said Delmon was going to hit 38. Man, half the folks on the Strib blog made him sound better than Griffey or A-Rod. There was no telling how great he could be. Some said he was Hank Aaron-like. he’d hit 40 plus and .320.

I’m just suggesting that the excuse that he’ “only 22 years old” doesn’t hold much water. There have been plenty of players who have played a lot better than him, at a younger age. I mentioned Cesar Cedeno also. I could find other Cedeno level players who played better than Delmon at a younger age.

Delmon is okay, he’s just not a superstar, and never will be. He’s mediocre, like many players.

Daaaahhhh! Any legitimate baseball fans knew from the time the Twins obtained Hernandez as an innings eater that he would not help the team that much. The Twins will be fortunate if he ends the season (if he makes it to the end of the season) with as many wins as losses. Any good baseball fan knew that getting Hernandez meant very little to the team’s fortunes. The Twins organization habitually obtains older pitchers with experience who are really not going to bolster the team’s winning percentage–only buy time and create a temporary novelty for the witless fan.

June 13th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

Gardenhire and his coaching staff have been a drag on the team’s efforts for the past two years. The over-rated Twins manager should spend as much time thinking about how to put the best possible lineup on the field as he does eating and drinking. Gardenhire habitually manipulates the starting pitching rotation and starting position player lineup to the point that the team never knows what to expect from day to day which detracts from their performance. Anderson has become a big minus as a pitching coach. The Twins have had outstanding prospects with great potential who have stumbled due to Anderson’s constant tinkering with their mechanics and attitudes. They go back and forth from starters to relievers and from the Majors to the Minors far too frequently. The Twins team really needs a change in manager and coaches. All the great talent in the world cannot help a team that is handicapped by poor coaching and management.

Will he have that “fire” he displayed after the game during the next one he pitches in? Does a pitcher really need that “fire” anyway?
Calm and collected is what they need to be, not flying off the handle as some percieved slight, however earned it may have been.

I honestly think that his next several starts are going to be good to GREAT, and then, he will deteriate again. But, if he does have 2 or 3 good starts, we can probably expect to see him moved, since I am also pretty sure that Franchise is coming back up after the Allstar break.
