Tuesday lineups: Twins/Padres
Posted on June 24th, 2008 – 5:47 PMBy Joe Christensen
SAN DIEGO — The Twins have a six-game winning streak, but tonight, they’ll face reigning NL Cy Young Award winner, Jake Peavy, as they begin a three-game series against the Padres.
Nick Punto is back from the disabled list, but he is not in the starting lineup.
Updates to come…
Update (7:55 p.m.): Manager Ron Gardenhire said he met with Mike Lamb on the last homestand and explained the situation. Lamb has not played in seven games and he is not in the lineup tonight.
“He’s been there before,” Gardenhire said. “He’s sat on the bench and done those things, and I’ll get him into this series some way or another, pinch hitting or whatever, try to mix him in here. I know I’ve got to use him, and he needs to play and all those things. We’re jurst trying to ride this thing as long as we can and go from there.”
The players are marveling at how beautiful this ballpark is, and how beautiful San Diego is in general. Right field will be an adventure for Michael Cuddyer, however. A section of seats juts out from the foul pole, and balls hit into that corner are very tough to judge.
Gardenhire stood with Cuddyer in right field during early batting practice.
“I told Mike, ‘Good luck,’” Gardy said.
Also, the Padres have had a terrible time preventing the stolen base. That will be a critical element to this series. The Twins need Carlos Gomez and Alexi Casilla to do some damage out there, but first they need to get on first base.
“I think that’ll depend on the starting pitchers that they’re throwing,” Gardenhire said.
Peavy, Greg Maddux and sudden stalwart Josh Banks. That’s a tough draw for the Twins.

Hat off to Gardy for keeping the lineup intact.
If it ain’t broke….
Watch out… Slowey’s batting 9th… here come the ‘bottom feeders’!
Why isn’t slowey hitting 3rd?
Kudos indeed goes to Gardy.
Call up Span!!! Bench Young!!! Put Gomez 9th(when DH comes back)!!! Leadoff Span!!!
Span lf
Casilla 2b
Mauer C
Morneau 1B
Cuddyer RF
Kubel DH
Harris ss
Buscher 3b
gomez CF
The lineup is not intact… Kubel is in LF instead of Young. I am glad that there is no Punto instead of Harris, but Lamb has a career .455 OBP against Peavy and I was really hoping that he will play tonight…
Young:.275/.326/.366, 25 RBI , OPS+ 90
Gomez: .269/.302/.379,26 RBI, OPS+ 86
Yet all I ever see is Gomez “electrifying, exciting” and Young “bench him, bench him”
Gomez has more stolen bases and is better in the field, but I think people are overreacting.
Is OPS+ adjusted for position? If not, you may want to compare Young and other LFers….
keep harris in the lineup, I’m starting to think it’s the press that wants punto to play
How about this comparison:
Young .962 FP 2.14 Range Factor
Kubel .875 FP 1.75 RF
span should be brought up to spell all 3 in the outfield…and he can lead off…go with 4 man rotation of sorts…
Grant,
Yet all I ever see is Gomez “electrifying, exciting” and Young “bench him, bench him”
Gomez has more stolen bases and is better in the field, but I think people are overreacting.
I think it is at least in part due to the fact that Gomez actually makes plays in the OF. We enjoy watching him chase down fly balls, dive for catches, run into walls, and basically take hits away.
We don’t enjoy balls getting hit to DY. In fact, we shudder when the ball goes that way for fear of the inevitable outcome of a messed up play.
Note, when I say “we”, I mean “me and my buddies with me (I and myself)”.
I sometimes wonder how badly people would be complaining about Young if Ryan Raburn hadn’t robbed that HR from him in Detroit and if we’d been playing in any other ballpark besides Oakland when he hit that mammoth double to left (would’ve been a HR almost anywhere else).
All things considered, how much better can you expect Span to be? He doesn’t have much power, and while he’s been on fire at AAA, I highly doubt he could post much better than a .270-.280 average in the Majors, although he would draw more walks.
Still, you lose Delmon’s phenomenal arm in left field, which I suppose is a tradeoff for Span being able to cover more ground.
Does anyone really think Denard Span would be a colossal improvement over Delmon Young though? Geez, the guy has two and a half bad months (which yes, is a long time), and people think he’s worthless and the Twins dropped the ball on this trade.
He’s 22 years old, adjusting to playing in a new stadium and new environment. Has be been disappointing so far? Of course he has. Should he be benched? Hell no. People forget how quickly someone can turn things around.
At this time last year, did anyone here even know who Nate McLouth or Ryan Ludwick was? Ryan Church was a complete bust in the Nationals organization at this time last year. Now, before his concussion with the Mets he was batting .300 with 10 HR and 35 RBI. Scott Kazmir was one of the most ineffective pitchers in baseball through the first half of 2007 and looked like his 2006 and 2005 success could have been a fluke.
Delmon Young is younger than all of them, and his numbers are no worse than our resident “power bat” and #5 hitter, Michael Cuddyer. Why aren’t there the same outcries to bench Cuddyer? Because he has a whopping two more home runs? Delmon’s hit at least 2 balls this year that would be HRs under most circumstances and been unlucky to have them go as a double and triple.
The “bench Young!” outcries need to stop. I wonder what would happen to players if their organization gave up on them as quickly as some people here want them to. Two years ago in the middle of June, Justin Morneau was barely batting his weight and looked like a poor man’s Adam Dunn. How quickly people forget…
why don’t we just call up Revere and have him start in CF, call up Parmelee and have him be the DH and tell Kubel/Gomez and Young that they can split time…. Thats sounds good, Right? no….. why the heck would you call up Span, and start him, maybe call him and tell Rondell White, I mean Craig Monroe go….. but that is a different story….
Carlos, I don’t know about you, but when I see a ball hit to Young in the corner, I get excited because I know unless whoever hit it can absolutely FLY, he could easily be gunned down at second base.
Delmon’s not graceful in left, but keep in mind, he’s a right fielder that the Twins are trying to convert. There’s more ground for him to cover there and he gets a little ahead of himself.
Gomez makes plenty of bad reads on fly balls. Just last week he dove and missed a ball by over 4 feet. Just because he dove, that play is ok? Gomez still has far too many adventures in center field where he catches the ball over his head while twisting himself in a circle. I don’t know how you can get nervous when the ball’s hit to left and not to center. Gomez will be a great CF one day, but he has a long way to go.
Whoa! Whats going on here!? In what alternate universe do I browse through the Star Trib Twins comments and find logical, well thought out arguments supported by statistical data!? I must be in heaven….
Delmon Young is a better outfielder than Cuddyer. He has 8 assists this year vs. Cuddyer’s 6 (and he is playing left field, which arguably is a lesser assist producing place to play). With the bat he is equal to Cuddyer. He is 7 years younger than Cuddyer and should be treated as a core member for the future of this team by the manager and the coaching staff (and he isn’t). Cuddy and Punto nick (pun intended) their fingernails and hammies and they are there, production or not, bunting into double plays or not. Span would be another Tyner/Lew Ford type of player with less defensive ability. I cannot believe that people do not remember his production when he came up earlier this season and his lead glove at right field and based on his minor league numbers are calling him to come up. Gardy loves his vets who are in his inner circle (i.e. they ones within the organization, excluding Monroe and Lamb) and he will play them until Smith bashes his head away (see Rincon usage and results this year). In my book, I wouldn’t mind seeing Young as the everyday right fielder, with Cuddyer platooning with Lamb at third and Kubel platooning with Monroe at left, with whomever is not playing the field (Kubel, Cuddyer, Monroe, Lamb) at DH. But this will never happen, because Cuddy needs a manicure at his left pinkie and whines if he plays 3rd (because he cannot get those OF assists) and Gardy listens, so I am practically wasting bandwidth here…
As long as the Twins are in the Dome, Cuddyer should play right field. His one great strength is that he plays the baggie perfectly and racks up assists as a result.
In the new park, I think it should be Delmon, but for now, there’s no sense in someone new learning to play our low-budget version of the Green Monster.
Plus, Cuddyer at third base was a NIGHTMARE.
Cuddyer at third base was a NIGHTMARE.
not that sure…
Cuddyer at 3B 2005: FP .942 RF 2.70 (league FP .957 RF 2.76). I’d argue that he was an average third basement at the field.
Look at these comparisons:
Buscher 2007: .923 FP 2.15 RF (league .957 FP 2.63 RF) the only time he had significant time at 3B to judge (now, that was a nightmare
)
Lamb 2008: .970 FP 2.52 RF (league .959 FP 2.78 RF)
I think that a Cuddyer and Lamb platoon would be the best option for the Twins at third…
For anyone who is expecting a pitching savior from the minors, this is Duensing’s line tonight:
6 IP 7 H 7 ER 1 BB 1K 2HR
Rochester is down 7-zip. And for some funny reason, Macri is playing 2B and Plouffe 3B… go figure
Left field in the dome is a LARGER AREA to cover & Young is faster. Give the man time to adjust to a new field. He is only 22, give him a chance to develop power. If he was 26, things would be different.
Just checking the New Britain game, Tolleson is back from his injury and starting in Center Field from all places… way to go Twins! Meanwhile Manship pitched in a rate of 6.0 IP 5 H 1 ER 0BB 5K and the Cats are losing 0-1
I suggest all of the arm chair managers and coaches cool down, let Gardy and his PROFESSIONAL corps of coaches run this club…… those guys can, will, and should make the decisions. I still suggest Ron Gardenhire as Manager of the Year in the American League!!!!!!!!
If you want to draw conclusions from a bad minor league game, fine. But I think it is a better idea to look at the overall play then one single game.
A full season of Cuddyer at third and he would’ve run away with the Major League lead in errors. He had 15 through 92 games. He should stay in right field and remember how to hit.
Still want the Twins to work out a package with the Padres centering around Span and Kouzmanoff ![]()
Steve, that would not be a bad deal (Span for Kouzmanoff) and throw in Bodd if you have to, but I think that the Twins, gotta have a look at Hughes and Valencia at the ML level before they go outside the organization for a third baseman
that was supposed to be “Boof” up there, but anyone noticed that that ‘crappy’ Arizona team that the Twins swept is about to take 2 for 2 from Boston in Fenway?
Right now, Delmon Young is not as good a player as Cuddyer. Cuddyer’s OBP is the same as Young’s, his slugging is higher. While I don’t predict a repeat of ‘06 for Cuddyer, his track record says he hits better in the second half and his life OPS is .796 (I think). Cuddyer is the superior fielder to Young, he has made far more good plays and fewer misplays, to say nothing of committing fewer errors. Both have great arms and aren’t run on much at all. The big difference between Cuddyer and Young is their performance in RBI situations to date: Cuddyer is hitting over .357 with RISP, Young is at .260. Cuddyer has more RBI in about 60 less plate appearances.
Cuddyer hasn’t played well to date, neither has Young. I expect Cuddyer will come on in the second half, I hope Young will improve, but I don’t expect it. Young is more the future of this team, but for three games in SD, when your squad is 1.5 games out of first, the better player for this week is Cuddyer.
Fresno State is putting the ‘wood’ to Georgia right now but it’s only the 4th inning and with those damn metal bats anything’s possible. 17 runs 24 outs. 11-6 Fresno State after 4. Is was 5 zip Georgia but Fresno State batted around in the 3rd and 4th.
Just a question, but all you saying “where are all the Cuddy haters”, would you be happier if these threads ripped both players? Would that be better?
I wouldn’t worry. If Cuddy continues to stink up the joint, you’ll start to see even more complaining.
I’m not convinced all the arguments here are actually based on stats, but they are moving that way, which is an improvement.
Imagine that, not only does FSN miss the start of an inning, but they can’t even be bothered to show the first pitch of the game.
Gomez with a crappy AB. I wonder how his wrists are doing.
Gomez with another fantastic start to a game. Why can’t he hit 9th with the rest of the order moving up a spot?
A rarity….Mauer fooled by a nasty pitch on that K.
Peavy is filthy.
Nice AB by Morneau
Nice AB by Cuddy! Wasn’t expecting it. Shame on me.
Stolen off Peavy…….
Damn! Kubel put good wood on it, but no cigar.
a bit of history: Ryan tried to get Peavy from the Padres 4 years ago, but it was a no mas trade… Oh well
Gotta love the shot of Punto in the dugout putting the chaw in
How bout that bass Busch got! Holy buckets!
Good to see Gardy sticking with the same lineup. Can somebody recap how they got that one run?
And wow…Ryan made a play for Peavy a while back? Hmm…Peavy + Santana + healthy Liriano = ….hot damn.
Casilla doubled,(hustled to make it a 2B) Mauer struck out, Morneau walked, Kubel Walked, Cuddyer base hit
Ouch, only one run on a bases loaded hit?
Somebody get gunned down at home?
Kubel grounded to 1st, didn’t walk.
The Cuddyer single came with Casilla on 2nd and Morneau on 1st.
Peavy missed the memo, if you throw your slider into the opposite batter’s box Cuddyer will get himself out.
Here we go again, Dick is going off on his bat breaking rant.
This is actually interesting. I didn’t know they had this conference today.
Lord knows poor harris will get the brunt of it. They’ll pass the rule in a few hours and he’ll get rung up for it when he comes to the plate.
Kubel with two well hit balls. Nothing to show for it. Blogger Jason on his way to being correct. HA!
Well hit balls don’t count in Jason’s book, only largely irrelevant and incredibly small cherry-picked sample sizes do.
well, both pitchers have thrown way too many pitches tonight. Slowey so far has the best of it.
Slowey looking very very decent tonight.
lets get this guy before its too late…hes one of these that gets better as the game goes….twins need runs now….start with the bush man
yep snepp, thats the guy. HA!
I like watching the games when the other team’s announcers are doing the game. Very interesting to hear their perspective. To go from reading the doomsday bloggers to hear them including HOF Gwynn being complimentary of several twins including gardy is very entertaining and interesting. HA!
bushman delivers.
Man……..let him hit away with 2 strikes on him.
He’s not a bunter.
A 56 mph change-slider from Peavy?
Thrylos, You stole my thoughts on the pitches thrown. But what the heck, I’m on my mountain in AZ so it’s only 8:17.
they really do need to sit gomez down for a bit and work with him….i dont know why they cant see that, but im sure they do, so what gives…whats the plan….. they need span on this roster for the 2nd half, starting now…
“Man……..let him hit away with 2 strikes on him.
He’s not a bunter.”
But if he swings away and grounds into a double play, then… why didn’t he bunt?
Or, he pulls a hamstring trying to beat out the double play ball.
It’s also funny that suddenly people who have bashed Span for years are talking about him as if he is the savior. I think what he has done this year is terrific, and he has made some improvements, but to expect him to save the day??
the starting pitching has been phenomenal lately…hope this is sign of things to come in the 2nd half….it would be wonderful, as i think the offense will come around, meaning delmon will pick it up in the later half, busher will continue to play well, hopefully casilla keeps it up and gomez figures a few things out…….what an inning for slowey…beauty
Wow!! Did you just see that changeup for the strikeout?!
Anybody really watching this game? The 1st inning hit by Cuddyer WAS on an outside and low slider - he went out and got it. Cuddyer was hitting .301 for the last 30 days - before current 2 for 2. There were 48 major leaguers who hit better
Seth,
You wouldn’t happen to have Kubel’s minor league platoon splits handy would you?
Gameday scroll just said something about Josh Hamilton leaving the game with a knee injury. Anyone have any more on this? Sorry if this is redundant.
seth i dont think span can save the day, but i do think he can push a few guys, and give some guys a rest now and then - and who knows he may just take over a spot…stranger things have happened….but he sure looked good last time he was up…i think it would be a boost to this outfield….but no, hes not coming in here to hit 350 and 30 hr and 100 rbi, but just a nice steady game, hitting 280-300 and good defense and speed…damn…hope mauer is ok..
Great call on Span SethSpeaks. Its the back up QB syndrome.
Slowey looks fantastic.
It might be time for a night off with Gomez. NOT A CALL FOR SPAN!
No, I don’t.
let this game end the right way and we’ll talk about it
but Slowey is probably the Twins’ ace merit-wise. Yeah, the bats are sleeping tonight and Kevin is close to the limit so I hope that the bullpen picks up
Thanks for the stat, tim.
I should point out, that i would have no problem with Span coming out and playing a day or two a week in left and a day or two in center and maybe a day every other week in right. I would have not problem with that. He just isn’t going to be a big answer. But yes, he could push people.
I take back everything good I’ve ever said about you then.
[/bad joke]
Thanks anyway though.
Assumption on Kubel’s minor league splits… they’re all pretty good. You can’t put up the overall numbers that he did with too many weaknesses.
talk about luck or lack of it …anywhere but there with that ball of cuddys bat…lol
I assumed they were pretty good all-around, was primarily curious about how well he actually hit lefties.
Speaking of Kubel, he gave that one a ride, wrong place to hit it.
Kubel seems to want to kill the ball at every at bat. Is Harris stinking the place up tonight or not?
I bet the farm Punto stats at SS tomorrow
uh starts
You a farmer, tim?
“Kubel seems to want to kill the ball at every at bat.”
I have absolutely no problem with this…
Thats what im saying boys! NICE!
hoe hoe hoe
Strike ‘em out, throw ‘em out!
Past a diving Harris.
Except for the strike ‘em out part.
![]()
every time bert and dick mention that a twins pitcher has retired so many batters in a row– he gives up a hit the next batter! Drives me nuts! just venting! Coors light anyone!
Thanks, snepp. It’s past my bedtime. Ha.
Glad not to hear bert and dick here. Got the San Diego broadcasting crew that includes Tony Gwynn
Why wasn’t Breslow warming up earlier in order to face either Giles or A. Gonzalez? Giles popped out but, darn it, anticipate Gardy.
Actually it wasn’t Kayla’s fault. FSN had the wrong count on the screen.
That would make it my fault then, because I wasn’t paying attention and didn’t realize FSN had the wrong count.
![]()
hmmm Breslow has been warming up along with Crain…
“I bet the farm Punto stats at SS tomorrow”
If Punto does get a start, it would be whatever game doesn’t feature Greg Maddux.
Shakopee? My hometown. Don’t recognize them…
Crain didn’t have his terrific slider Sunday. Looks like he doesn’t have it tonight either.
Get Crain out NOW!
Breslow should have pitched to Gonzalez, isn’t that what we got him for?
Feel bad for Slowey, best start for him this year and Crain pisses it away
According to the radio team, Breslow didn’t start warming up until Anderson went to the mound, as Giles was coming up. If I was misled, I’m sorry. However, A Gonzalez was one of two left handed batters out of three to come up in the 7th. Breslow?
This is a perfect illustration of why W-L record for a pitcher says pretty much nothing.
Why is Harris batting 7th and Buscher 8th instead of the other way around.
Slowey did a heckuva job out there tonight. Win or No-Decision, he paired up against Jake Peavy and outdueled him.
The offense had troubles against Peavy (to be expected), it’s too bad the pen didn’t have more room to wiggle than that.
“Why is Harris batting 7th and Buscher 8th instead of the other way around.”
The only thing i can think of is that with Young out of the lineup there’s no righty to break up the two lefties.
Awww dang it Morneau…
That was Mauer’s run that scored. He should have blocked the ball.
Deep breath… Guerrier is in. (and the sox won tonight)
The offense had troubles against Peavy (to be expected), it’s too bad the pen didn’t have more room to wiggle than that.
They hit alot of balls hard too that went right at guys. Kubel had three of them by himself. Sure didn’t get much in the way of luck tonight.
Come on Matt, not you too…
Twins giving the game away at this point….Morneau getting run down, leadoff walk by Guerrier.
This one is getting away from the Twins. Casilla could have made a play, Mauer should have blocked the ball, and now Morneau gets caught off first. Now a walk on a 3-2 pitch where the catcher took a pretty healthy check swing.
Thankfully Guerriers spot in the ilneup won’t come up until later in the 9th. After a few guys hopefully get on/score.
COME ON SR SWEAT!!!!!!!!!
Who trusts the “Big Sweat”?
Giles and Gonzalez coming up……mmm time for a left hander? If so, why not in the seventh?
Giles is tough against lefties, as far as I remember. Okay, a one pitch win for Reyes?
FSN TV broadcast is 5 seconds behind real time.
I get superstitious about stuff like that.
I DO!! The big sweat is perfect for these situations. Its the games where he’s asked to pitch multiple batters where he gets in trouble.
Kubel can handle this guy. Crank one Kubes.
Too many glass half-empty people on the board tonight. We scraped out a run again last year’s CY. Lotsa well hit balls that were right at people. We just escaped a 2 on, 0 out jam. Slowey pitched a great game. Come on Kubel!
BRENDAN!
Oh………..THAT’s why Harris battng 7th
YESSSSSSS!!!!!
So I guess that’s why Harris is batting 7th instead of Buscher…
Wow. Off of Hoffman.
HARRIS!!!!!!!!!
one farm GONE!!!!
damn!
No……I WAS RIGHT THE FIRST TIME!!!
Oh wait…nevermind.
Wow, thats all i can say
YESSSSSS!!!! YESSSSSSS!!!!
BUSCHER!!!!!
Harris sure stinks tonight. Wait. I think he should start again tomorrow.
Buscher. dude wants to keep playing 3b.
I want an apology from Craig on his assertion that Punto should be the start and would be “worked” in by Gardy.
Harris with the HR!!
Buscher with the HR!!
BACK TO BACK!!
So we’ve got Johnson, Webb, Peavy, and now (if Nathan holds it down) Hoffman.
So… anyone else NOT see that coming?
Ha-ha, TIM!!!
(Actually I was hoping Punto would play tomorrow too.)
Another Bottom Feeders blog opportunity for Howard tomorrow.
“So… anyone else NOT see that coming?”
Yeah…I’ll admit that was the last thing I expected. Heck, HARRIS homer let alone B2B.
if the twins hold on, gardy would be a fool to do anything to change the starting lineup tomorrow nite…..dont mess with it, at least at the start
Crain lets down Slowey, Guerrier/Reyes pick up Crain. Lineup picks up bullpen.
It’s a team effort. ![]()
How many days am I banned from posting.
The big sweat throws one pitch and gets the win! The bottom feeders playing long ball. Slowey with a great game again. That was fun.
Now THAT’S a nice way to wrap up a nailbiter.
R.A. Dickey threw one hell of an inning for the Mariners today… too bad he got away.
7 7 7 7 7 7 7
That would be 7 in a row……..
“This is a perfect illustration of why W-L record for a pitcher says pretty much nothing.”
Isn’t it though?
Slowey pitches 6 excelent innings, and gets an ND. Reyes throws one pitch and gets the win.
W/L is a team stat. I have no idea why it’s stuck to a pitcher.
Show of hands, who else had the feeling that the Twins wanted to make sure all of us back here at home could go to bed at a reasonable hour?
great win to stick with chi…cleve and det lose…great evening…..just great…
this team is going to be a serious contender, so buckle up and get ready for the ride for the next couple months….lets just hope the f.o. recognizes this and does its job, whatever that might be…..nothing held back….let it all out……
Good fun Romer! Ciao
No Tim, you’ve taken the monkey of the back of Joe C on the reverse-hex thing.
Well, I am going to have to eat some serious crow tomorrow… one of my friends got me to come out and say that this is still just a rebuilding year. That hurts.
The quality starts are piling up. We finally have some offense at 3B. Cuddy seems to be coming around. CLE and DET aren’t looking so great. It’s a good time to be a Twins fan.
i hear vavra is negotiating with scott boras.
haha good one mm
Thanks to the youngsters and thank goodness for the NL. It’s nice to be fortunate, late and on the road, once in a while.
Forgot that Cuddy had a SB tonight.
Now let’s get Gomez going and run on this team tomorrow.
Meanwhile, Monroe continues to threaten the Mendoza line.
See, who would want any of Monroe, Lamb, Young, and Boof? That’s what’s wrong with mj1’s 11:56 post. We have a shot at the division, but not at the wild card or the AL championship.
How can you replace any of the above 4 players? How can you go “let it all out”?
And why? The final focus still has to be on next year as this young, slightly-better-than-.500 ballclub develops this year while competing for the Central.
And God bless Harris. He’s gotten the worst assignment this year (new to 2B) and jerked around a bit. But he’s sticking to it.
romer,
See, who would want any of Monroe, Lamb, Young, and Boof?
I am pretty sure that I am misunderstanding you, but are you implying that no one would be interested in Delmon, if the Twins were stupid enough to try to unload him?
If the Twins traded Delmon, I would hope they receive what the TWINS KNOW he is worth and not what the myopic blog commenters THINK he is worth.
