Postgame: Cuddyer and Casilla updates

Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said the team will know Sunday morning whether Michael Cuddyer needs to go on the disabled list with the strained tendon in his left index finger.

“How many days it’s going to be? We’re not positive,” Gardenhire said. “Doctors said if he comes in tomorrow, and he feels a little better, then we’ve got maybe two or three days. But if he comes in and he’s still really sore, we’re looking at probably a DL thing. So we’ll find out more tomorrow.”

Alexi Casilla, who has a strained middle finger on his left hand, will probably be back in the lineup Sunday to face Ben Sheets, Gardenhire said.

“Lexi should be fine,” Gardenhire said. He does have a little strain of the ligament, but doctors seem to think they can tape that thing together and he’ll be fine.”

Good news on Casilla, but I’ll bet the injury recurs at some point. Cuddyer–if the pain extends beyond the finger into the hand, I’m guessing a stay on the DL is in order. What is it with Cuddyer? He’s had a thumb injury, index fingers on both hands and the ring finger on his right hand injured.

Well, he did get plunked on the hand too, so that doesn’t help. As is, he needs to let it heal. If you can’t grip a bat, you are gonna be craptastic at the plate. I had a broken finger when I was in High School, and I had several flung bats because of it. I had some hits, but man, did it sting. Lucky for me, it was my throwing hand, so it didn’t cause any trouble in the field, other than an occasional wild throw back into the infield.

Let’s hope the Twins can at least get Casilla back. Punto is not a long term solution, and the middle infield has been pillaged enough by injury that i don’t think there’s much in the way of help on the farm.

Cuddyer? I’d hate to see him on the DL. Though it may force the Twins hand in the trade market. Monroe is not an everday player anymore.

If Cuddy Goes on the DL. Its almost Certain that Denard Span will get the call.

Kubel this week: 5-for-17 (.294), 2 HR, 3 RBI, 5R, 3BB.

Jason, your thoughts?

Mauer DHing manana with Redmond batting fifth? As I posted earlier, Macri would have been a boon in the lineup tonight…pick your position, 3B or 2B. With Buscher playing well, having a lefthanded reserve third baseman and one too many pitchers is asking to get Lamb-asted. We need another RH bat to replace Cuddy. Gardenhire doesn’t have a lot of options.

Went to the game tonight. Got there early enough to see Kubel take BP. It was incredible. The ball just flew off of his bat and generally was into the upper deck. He’s locked in right now.

I was out in left field and I am certain that 75% of the fans were Brewers fans. It was ugly and they are incredibly obnoxious!!

Good to hear Casilla is alright. Hopefully Cuddyer is alright. If not, Span may come up and get some added PT

By the way, Delmon, for as clueless as he can look at times, is hitting over .280. I think it’s time to move on from that bashing too.

Also, for really the first time this year, I think we can call Livan’s performance tonight innings-eating. He could have been done in the third. He was at 93 pitches after 5. He was at 105 pitches after 6 and somehow he gave them seven. He wasn’t good for the first three, but in this one game, he did eat innings.

I’ll be in the cheap seats tomorrow afternoon. Here’s hoping Kubel hits a couple up there in the game… maybe Morneau too (you know, to try to take back the lead).

One other question for those who watched on TV and saw replays… Did Gomez actually rob a homer in the 9ths? From my angle, it looked like he just jumped way too early and made it look like a great play. It was a good play, but I didn’t think the ball would have cleared the fence.

Tony, Your 10:27 post might well be more right than mine (I was laboriously trying to decipher my keyboard late at night). I do think that Macri’s future is with the big club vs. Rochester.

we wasted no time releasing rincon this year, who was serving basically no purpose out of the bullpen. however, we continue to run out hernandez every fifth day, who is arguably throwing worse than rincon. say what you want about his record or the fact he hadn’t lost at the dome before tonight, but he’s giving us literally no chance at winning. fsn always flashes the twins record when he’s on the hill, but i’m not impressed. minus a hot offense, his record very closely resembles silva’s this year. if you’re going to argue that he’s a veteran presence, let’s at least move him into the bullpen…

The ball wouldn’t have gone over but it was very close.

Versus the righthander, Lamb shakes off the rust and is the DH, I hope Mauer plays, but wouldn’t be surprised if he took the day off.

Casilla has been very valuable at second. I hope he is good to go tomorrow!

Trav, Your reference to Silva is most apropos. He is currently pitching into the 7th against the dreaded Padres, having just given up a two-run single to Tony Clark, while leading 4-2. Prior to tomight, his last ten starts yielded an 0-9 record witha a 8.5+ ERA. So much for the $48 MM Man.

Hopefully Span is called up and Monroe can go to hell or something.

Yeah. I’ve noticed times like these the “fans” come out of the wood work.

We’re talking the kinds of road fans that don’t “cheer”, but rather do that obnoxious thing where htey stand up and sarcastically applause while looking around at the home fans.

The “loyal” “diehard” road fans that will be the first ones out the door if their team’s down by more than a couple after 6.

Put Cuddyer on the DL right now, and get him healthy before the trade deadline… Bring up Span who has played way better than I thought he was capable of playing this year. Move Young to RF for a while, and let Span play in LF.

LF Span
2B Cassilla
CA baby jesus
1b Morneau
RF Young
DH Kubel
3B Busher
SS Harris
CF Gomez

If Span can keep his new found eye at the plate… even if he hits .275 he will have a .350 OB% and that would be more imporant than Cuddyer has been so far this season… Let Cuddy get healthy so he can try and be a help, and not just a body in the lineup.

BC Beneke says:

Right now, until Cuddy’s wrist, and everything else are 100% he’s just not helping the team much. We need a 20 homer, 90rbi season from him for him to be worth what he’s being paid, and it’s only fair that he get the opportunity to be healthy to do that. Meanwhile it gives the Twins 3 guys in the lineup capable of stealing 20 bases in a row, and it gives Mauer and Morneau a chance to get more RBI with Span up here… and believe me I never in my lifetime thought I’d be wanting to see Span.
