Tuesday lineups: Twins/Red Sox

Posted on July 8th, 2008 – 2:59 PM
By Joe Christensen

BOSTON — Joe Mauer is in the lineup again tonight, with the Twins facing Red Sox lefthander Jon Lester.

Updates to come…

Update (4:35 p.m.): Getting a growing sense that the Twins will keep Denard Span in the majors when Michael Cuddyer returns from the DL.

Cuddyer will be back in right field, but Span could rotate to all three outfield spots, starting three or four games per week.

It becomes a development question for the Twins. Is it better for Span’s development to start every day for Class AAA Rochester? Yes. But it’s July, and they are right in the race.

I think Span’s impact goes beyond his own performance, which has been solid — .294 batting average, .400 OBP, several terrific catches in right field. Delmon Young and Carlos Gomez seem sharper because there’s another up-and-comer, a 24-year-old around.

No one needs to convince Manager Ron Gardenhire. He was pushing for Span to be in the big leagues even before Cuddyer got hurt. The front office might need some convincing, but I’ve had indications that they’re ready to keep Span, too, even if it means eating salary to cut another player.

Note: Cuddyer still has pain in his left index finger, so he’s not ready to begin a rehab yet, anyway. You won’t hear the Twins talking too much about this upcoming roster dilemma until Cuddyer gets closer to a return. As they always say, “These things take care of themselves.”

Twins (50-39)

1. Carlos Gomez, CF

2. Alexi Casilla, 2B

3. Joe Mauer, C

4. Justin Morneau, 1B

5. Craig Monroe, DH

6. Kevin Youkilis, 1B

What has Monroe shown against left handers to get him these starts?

Plunkton says:

He must be better than Kubel against lefties? Sometimes Gardy plays the numbers too much and thinks way too hard regarding matchups. Sometime I’d like him to just put all the players’ names in a hat and pick out 9 and have that be the starting lineup.

I dont like Buscher’s bat out of the lineup. Monroe needs to do something tonight.

Josh Gorman says:

Anyone one else feel like the twins should have one yesterday, two great oppurtunities to win, puntos triple and….dont remember the other, oh well at lease CWS were off

I’m pretty sure Monroe is batting worse against lefties than righties, which makes you wonder about a lot of moves lately.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:08 pm

Monroe’s numbers against lefties are even worse than kubel’s. Kubels aren’t even close to good either though.

Original Kevin says:

yesterdays game shows how ridiculous it was for Bill Smith to say that there are no pieces missing, and they need not be active in trading.

Had Cheap Carls Twins had one more bona fide hitter in the lineup, they still may have lost, but in one of those bases loaded situations they may have came through.

This is the difference between teams like the Red Sox and White Sox on one hand, and the Twins.

The Sox teams dont sit still, thinking they have enough, they go out and get the missing pieces, the Twins just sit still, and hope they have a miracle which might get them to the playoffs and best, but even then crash and burn.

Monroe .138 vs Lefties .288 vs Righties
Kubel .157 vs Lefties .295 vs Righties

So what’s the point in ever playing Monroe over Kubel?!

Everett_Fan says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Why is Kubel/Monroe and Harris/Buscher and either or? Kubel RF, Monroe DH, Harris SS, Buscher 3B. We got to second place by getting early leads and letting the inexperienced staff pitch while ahead. Since Gardy re-inserted his scrappers we have been shutout by opposing starters until the 7th inning. This years team doesn’t have the pirahna personality.

I think the Twins will win tonight

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:31 pm

Righties have hit Lester quite a bit better than lefties, so the lineup kind of makes sense. I would still rather see kubel than monroe or span though.

Patrick says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:33 pm

Both players are bad against lefties and Monroe is bad against right handers too. It shouldn’t matter. Monroe should be a bench player and Kubel should be our full time DH. He’s a good enough hitter that it shouldn’t be a matchup thing for him. He should play full time and if he actually got AB’s against LHP who knows how he’d produce.

I like how Monroe is rewarded though for failing so miserably yesterday. Nice coaching, Gardy.

great lineup because we have gomez, mauer, monroe, young, harris and punto that we can pick from to complain about tomorrow win or lose.
span, casilla and morneau are still on the honeymoon but if morneau doesn’t start hitting some homeruns soon he’ll be fair game as are all pitchers and gardy.
span and casilla have maybe another week.

Plunkton says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:38 pm

FV&G….Punto was one of the few guys who actually got a hit (triple) last night. Since his injury he has been playing pretty well. You can’t deny that. Remember, Gardy likes to go with the ‘hot hand’. Not sure how that plays into Monroe starting tonight, though. :S

Rocky Simons says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:39 pm

Buscher has good #s against Lefties at AAA. He hasn’t been given a chance to
bat consistently against Lefties. Does Gardy know how difficult it is to play and bat only every other day or 1 of 3. What hot bat Buscher had Gardy has managed to cool off.
Young and his first swing bat is in the line-up though…..

Brent says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:40 pm

I get so bored when I hear people complain about the Pohlads being cheap. Get over it people!!! This team is never going to spend a ton of money on FA’s, but guess what very few teams consistently spend much money on FA’s and we all know who those teams are, the big market clubs. I am willing to bet that if Pohlad raised ticket prices relative to the level that they are in Boston, NY, Chicago and LA in order to raise money to spend it on FA’s people would be complaining about how greedy he is!!!

So if they win 5 - 2 or something tonight will you all eat your words tomorrow? Yeah, Gardy is such a horrible manager….he’s the guy who was supposed to be battling KC for last place in the division with this team. Last time I checked they’ve won 18 of 22 with him managing.

FIRE VAVRA & GARDY!!!! says:

Punto has started 7 out of the last 8 games getting 1 hit in 4 games 2 hits in 2 games and collecting RBI in 3 games Buscher who is on the bench because of little nicky is hitting .314 in his latest stretch of starting 9 straight games he got a hit in ALL but 1 game and had an RBI in 6 of the 9 games I would rather start Buscher

00Steve says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:50 pm

I got a sneaky feeling Gomez is going to have a big game tonight. Loved when Steve Phillips said last night, “I could watch this guy throw all day.” after his laser to 3rd just missing Manny.

Mudcat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:52 pm

Monroe starts. Maybe Kubel gets the big pinch-hit opportunity tonight.

Okobojicat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:53 pm

Complaining about Kubel vs. Monroe is silly. Neither have hit lefties well, but with Lester pitching better against lefties (RH.268/.340/.396 vs LH .223/.279/.323) it makes sense to get Monroe some at bats. However, Monroe should be playing RF, Kubel DH, and Span on the bench. That makes this team better. Also, Harris at 3B makes sense, but only in Fenway because it gives RH hitters such an advantage against LH pitching.

Deej says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

I like Span in the lineup. The speed of Span, Gomez, and then Casilla is fun to watch.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:55 pm

Yay! Punto AND Monroe in the lineup. And Harris at 3B? Oh joy. No shortage of moaning tonight regardless of outcome.

Oh well, lets hope they lose. At least then it’ll be partially justified.

00Steve says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:56 pm

My point is only that the argument should never be Monroe over Kubel. In no circumstance do you take the bat out of your 5th hitter, HR leader, and one of your top RBI men. How about Kubel plays right and Monroe DHs. That makes more sense than sitting Kubel.

MarkW says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:57 pm

Kubel should be in LF (with the monster, we dont need any speed) Young should be on the bench for last nights ABs.
Buscher should also be in the lineup at 3B, Harris at SS - Punto needs to be sat down before he slides into 1B and gets hurt…

I could watch him throw all day too, because you never know if the laser is going to gun out a runner or a guy in the first row.

Ben D says:

July 8th, 2008 at 3:58 pm

Gomez does have a laser and he also swings like a wild animal that just got let out of a cage. I would let Casilla lead off, bat Span second and put Gomez ninth.

9) Span RF

00Steve says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:01 pm

I agree with MarkW. Sit Delmon at least for tonight. I don’t know what warrants his starting. If Gardy likes to go with the “hot hand” as everyone suggests, then he would sit tonight. I’d love to see:
Gomez CF
Casilla 2B(not Castilla as ESPN thinks)
Mauer C
Morneau 1B
Kubel LF
Monroe DH
Harris 3B
Punto SS
Span RF

Ben D says:

I dont have a problem with Punto playing as long as he is producing. He was a inch from going yard last night.

jimmy bee says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

Does anyone know why we can’t use Lamb as a DH for just one night?

Karlee says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:03 pm

oh yeah ps buscher isnt on the bench because of Punto, last time I checked buscher plays 3rd and Punto is playing ss because everett is hurt. We have three people to play 3rd, and Punto is on a roll so why bring him out? Would you take out casilla if he played 3rd and you wanted buscher to play? No. Because casilla is doing good.

I want to smack someone.

Doug Munson says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:04 pm

Deej,

It would be even more fun to watch Span,Gomez and Casilla run if Gardenhire actually let them run.The Twins need to get the running game(stolen bases) going again.

I don’t buy the “you don’t want to take the bat out of Mauers hands” bit.If they walk Mauer after Casilla steals,Morneau is up with two guys on base.Is that a bad thing?

MarkW says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

GGun: Buscher could DH as well… that just leaves Punto in the lineup, which I’m against… but it’s a possibility…
I just think you need Kubel’s bat in the lineup, regardless of the pitcher, he’s been tearing it up and needs to play (we can’t win if we dont score, as last night proved)

Dr. Don says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

If Gardy followed the advice of all of these experts on this comment section, we would be in last place in the AL Central. Thank God he doesn’t. Good luck tonight Twins’Pups, a lot of us out here are on your side, and 18 wins of the last 22 games is better than any of these so called experts could do. Go Twins, Go Gardy, Go PUPS!!!

ES16 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:06 pm

Have any of you watched Kubel trying to hit lefthanded breaking pitches this season? He looks like he doesn’t have a clue. Dick and Bert mentioned over the weekend that Monroe’s numbers against lefthanders have been steadily rising. I think it’s a good move.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Good to see Mauer in there again. I’d like to see Buscher get some ABs against a lefty.

With the roation going every other day righty-lefty until the break, I don’t think we should play him only when a righty is on the mound.

As for Lamb, I don’t think tonight would be a good night to use him at DH. He is pretty terrible against lefties.

How about we give up on that experiment and call-up Macri. We don’t have a lot of righties off the bench, and Macri had something like 3 HR, 10 RBI and a .444 average last week.

Dr. Don says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:08 pm

I agree T. The guy hit something like 15 HR last season just as a pinch-hitter, and now when given a chance to start can’t do anything.

I guess all guys aren’t meant to be everyday players.

If there is one thing I can’t wait for it is a steady option at 3B. Doesn’t seem like we’ve had one since Koskie. Everything has been an experiment.

T says:

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:15 pm

Well, the Cubs really want Harden, but they say the A’s will likely keep him because they are demanding a kings ransom for him.

I wonder what team’s in the AL Central will act and how big the moves will be.

The Phillie will probably be very active trying to get another starter with their division winable.

jimmy bee says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:16 pm

Well someone on here is immature so I will be reporting this to Joe C and I hope it isn’t you

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:17 pm

I think Lamb off the bench could be handy, if he hasn’t shot his confidence to pot yet this season.

Monroe off the bench is nice (when used properly), and Redmond will has been rather impressive in his limited starts (hitting 3rd of all places)

Will be interesting to see what the bench looks like by the end of the season. I think Lamb gets dealt for a minor leaguer (ala Ortiz) later in the season, Buscher will go to the bench if they’re able to bring in somebody new. Otherwise it’s Macri on the bench with Buscher starting.

Punto has been impressive, but his bat will come back down to Earth and he’ll be living off the bench. I like that Gardy’s making sure to keep Harris in the lineup so his bat doesn’t cool off at the same time.

MarkW says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:18 pm

Lamb’s gotta go, if it wasn’t for the insane money we gave him…

Macri is a good idea to call up… Buscher and Macri would be nice options at 3B and it should keep Punto out of the lineup for good.

Time to cut dead weight: Bass or Bonser, Livan? (Liriano after the break), Lamb and Everett… not getting it done…

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:19 pm

There are two things I’d like to see happen within the organization:

1) Call Macri up for someone like Lamb.
2) Somehow keep Span up when Cuddyer returns.

I also think they need to let Everett goes if he ever returns. There is nobody to send down to keep him.

TwinsTerritory says:

Ben D says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

Tolbert will be on the bench before Macri. Although I would like to have both on there. I think next year our bench will consist of Punto, Tolbert and Macri. All three can play almost every position on the field.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

That was not directed at GG’s post by the way. It should be pretty obvious who it WAS directed to.

flatblade says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:22 pm

I thought maybe Mauer would take tonight off, otherwise this is exactly the lineup I expected. Everybody needs to play and everybody in the bullpen needs to pitch. Lamb is the only one who is getting nothing.

With a day game tomorrow and continued warm conditions, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see Lamb play first tomorrow, with Kubel in the outfield and Delmon also on the bench.

It helps to be a good fielder if you want to play more. Punto is the current best defensive option at short and he is getting the nod over Harris. Span is a good defensive OF, so he is playing everyday despite having a minor league track record that says he struggles against lefties.

I think the theory is that a player can win a game with his legs, his glove or his bat. Gardenhire is using Span and Punto more because they have speed and play superior defense to the other options.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:23 pm

“Anyone else have a problem with Young starting tonight after last night?”

Young is the team’s best pure hitter. If he makes a mistake here and there thats just part of his development. He is only 22 years old and will only get better. He can’t get better if he doesn’t play every day. Also, he is probably the team’s best outfielder which you need when playing against the green monster.

I think you’re on the right track with Tolbert and Macri on the bench next season. But because of their flexibility, I think Punto becomes a redundant expense.

Tolbert shouldn’t be on the bench when he gets off the DL. I think he needs to go back down to AAA to get everyday starts and recover from a pretty long stint.

Jason says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

Does anyone know how old Delmon Young is? Just curious.

Seriously, you knew the masses would jump on Gardy for “what’s the point of starting Monroe over Kubel”…I direct you to my posts today on Howard’s blog.

This manager has us at 50-39. I’m not saying he’s free from criticism (goodness knows I have complaints from time to time), but his usage of Kubel / Monroe has been very effective this season.

Lest we forget, Monroe had the huge hit Sat. night which spurred us to a win….his walk also started the seventh inning rally on Sunday. Yes, he failed in a PH spot last night, but ultimately, he’s been a plus for this ball club.

Does anyone else recall how huge his start was against two weeks ago against San Diego in a similar spot? I sure do.

I know the Kubel lovers want to see him in the lineup…and maybe it should be Kubel over Denard Span, for instance…but you can’t fault Gardy with this move. Gardy is getting the most out of Kubel and Monroe and we should be happy with the results.

Gardy says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:28 pm

T, I appreciate everything that you’ve tried to do for me over the years but even I have to admit you’re going a little overboard with your adulation. Young is the teams best outfielder T! What have you been smoking today??? The guy takes the wrong angles to the ball, he’s lazy pursuing balls hit in the gap, makes stupid decisions on whether to play the ball on a bounce or go for the half-assed dive, and panics when the ball is hit right at him. In a nutshell: he’s lost. It’s like watching Don Baylor trying to play in the outfield.

Gomez's gun says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:34 pm

I am not at all bashing Gardy or his decisions for the year, I just don’t understand the whole having to have Monroe or Kubel as the DH. I know it is against baseball logic having your backup catcher as DH, but what about Red against lefties for a game or two here and there. Gardy has done it before with Mauer’s bat, why not Red.

I’m a little late to the party, but Monroe’s performance vs. LHP this year is a statistical anomaly. It’s based on a very small sample size of 73 plate appearances. Over his career he’s hit lefties to the tune of .262/.312/.475 (885 PA). Kubel vs. lefties in his career is .217/.298/.319 (188 PA). Does anybody really want to give up 156 points in slugging percentage against a good left handed pitcher in Fenway tonight?

Ben D says:

Maybe so T. Just depends who is hot and who is not by then. Remember way back when Harris had a homerun in 2 straight games. Everybody was all for him being the twins starting SS. A week later he doesnt even need to be on the roster.

Shaitan,

I was trying to make that point. I agree with you. I just think every article turns into bashing of Punto, DY, and Gardy. I would really enjoy some useful comments, that may come with a stat or something of knowledge. I don’t comment very often, but I read a lot. Some of us have nothing better to do at work. Go Twins.

Jason says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:38 pm

I’ll repeat what I said on Howard’s blog…

Look, when you breakdown the splits, it’s clear that there’s no real advantage in playing Monroe over Kubel, statistically.

However, if you don’t use Monroe…if you go exclusively Kubel long-term, you’re going to end up with two problems:

1. You’re going to have a stale, uninterested Craig Monroe on this roster

2. You’re going to have a DH hitting .240.

I submit that it’s this effective platoon which has kept Kubel’s stats impressive AND allowed Monroe to be effective and flourish in limited playing time.

sane says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:40 pm

Lets see.

We are playing a team with its only lefthanded SP going tonight.

We are playing at Fenway where the LF fence is just behind the shortstop.

We are playing at Fenway where RH batters have killed LH pitchers for almost 100 years.

The Red Sox themselves have had VERY FEW LHP’s survive Fenway to have a decent career with the Sox.

And everyone is bitching because Gardy is loading the batting order with RH hitters, as managers have done at Fenway for almost 100 years.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm!

MarkW says:

I had Monroe AND Kubel in tonights lineup… I know that’s completely out of the ordinary, but I like that before starting Span, Punto, Redmond in the same lineup.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:42 pm

“Young is the teams best outfielder T! What have you been smoking today???”

Young is a consistent presence in the outfield Tom. He’s amongst the league leaders in outfield assists and opponents are relunctant to take the extra base as long as he has the ball in his hand. Who would you propose play left field? Span has never played left and surely would have difficulty playing there at the pro level. You’re not going to put Gomez there and Kubel has very limited range. I’m sure the coaches have factored all these things before deciding that Young is their best option out there.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

Oh cute, another “OMG he wuvs Gardy” comeback (about five months too late with that joke folks) and then somebody posts with my name (though at least they did something a bit more mature than the typical “Pohlad is a genius” type spam)

Glad to see I’ll have a fill-in tonight while I’m out. Makes me wonder how many other Tuesday’s have been filled in for me while I was at volleyball.

Oh well, the last few times I was at there, Monroe was in the lineup and did some good (I think the 3-run dinger was last week)

Let’s hope that holds this week as well. Frankly I still would rather see Kubel in RF to keep his bat, but I’m guessing in Fenway that probably wouldn’t be such a good idea.

Let’s hope for a win tonight, maybe it’ll thin the herd around here a bit.

While the starting rotation has been solid, you have to imagine the Twins’ brain trust would like some upgrades in the bullpen. (Sure would be nice having Neshek back right about now.) With so many outfielders — Gomez, Young, Cuddyer, Span, Kubel, Monroe — one would think prospects have become expendable.

Any chance the Twins make a move for some bullpen improvement?

tom says:

July 8th, 2008 at 4:51 pm

I know I responded in Howard’s blog, but since you feel the need to bring it up again, I’ll respond again. In fact, I’m just going to copy what I posted there.

‘You are still going with this? Come on. Is it that hard to take an actual look at some numbers?

In the Twins last 24 games, Kubel has started 19 of them. In those games, he is hitting .333/.400/.623. Even if Kubel had started those other 5 games, and went 0-4 in every single one of them, he would be hitting .258 over that stretch.

I’m not trying to suggest that Kubel play every single day like Morneau does. Sit him against a tough lefty. Nothing wrong with that. But he should be past the “pinch hit with a right handed hitter” at this point, and you should realize that he isn’t a .240 hitter.’

Original Kevin says:

July 8th, 2008 at 5:03 pm

I am sure T was being sarcastic when he was saying Young was the teams best outfielder. Of course he looks like a clown in the outfield.

I will give him more slack on his hitting, he has picked up lately on that, but that having been said, I am sure Billy Smith would love to have that trade back.

I myself was all for the trade at the time, but am willing to admit Iwas wrong.

Pete D says:

July 8th, 2008 at 5:10 pm

“I myself was all for the trade at the time, but am willing to admit Iwas wrong.”

Wrong about what? Since a slow start to the season, Young has really turned it on. Since the beginning of May, he has hit .296/.346/.427. Since the start of June, he has a .327/.354/.495 line. Add in the fact that Bartlett has been terrible this year while Harris has been serviceable, and I would call the trade pretty even.

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

I like the players in the lineup but the Twins have to seriously start thinking about moving Span to leadoff. He’s patient, works the count, doesn’t swing at many bad pitches and has a .400 OBP - Everything Go-Go doesn’t do! I love watching him play and he is the most exciting player on the Twins, but these guys need to switch places in the batting order.

As much as I’d hate Favre on the Vikings, I’d put up with it for a year to watch him go from God to Devil in under a year. (At least in Green Bay)

You thought people turned on Damon when he went from the Sox to the Yanks…that’d be nothing like the Packers scorned.

Somebody earlier mentioned Bill Smith wishing he could take the Young trade back.

I have to say, you’d be hard pressed to get TB to agree to that ;)

Garza’s done very well for himself in the AL East thus far. I don’t have his complete numbers, so I’m not sure how he’s paired up against the BoSox or Yanks…but I think he faces the Empire this week.

3.51 ERA thus far, so he’s not exactly taking advantage of the Rays offense.

Bartlett….from what I’ve seen it looks like they broke even on that for Harris. Though the Rays credit him for being a leader. That’s gotta tell you something about how the Rays were when they consider a guy Bartlett’s age to be a “veteran”.

Not a knock against Bartlett, but a testament to the youth on the Rays.

July 8th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

Twins Territory-yeah, more regulations-it’s the internet,dork!!

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

IDK Johnny, lets find out…

Wow says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Damn craig hit that ball hard

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Johnny, most sites do make users register to comment so people like we have tonight don’t come in just because they want to try their little jokes and see who they can make mad.

billy P says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Monroe is over the hill. He is hitting 212

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

TT: I’ve been pushing for Atkins, but another poster put together a very good breakdown of how Span could be used in a deal to get Kouzmanoff. (And it sounds like he’s available).

Also, a couple of notes based on DnB’s commentary.

1) Can they really wipe a “Perfect Game” or “No-Hitter” out of the books because they change the rules NOW? I mean, we can’t technically wipe FDR out for having 4 terms as president just because now a days he couldn’t do it.

2) Did FSN go back to the old camera angle behind the pitcher? Or is this due to the bizarre angles at Fenway?

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Gosh, Delmon sucks. Ugh!

:)

Wow says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

Atta boy Brendan!

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

There’s Gardy with his magic pencil again. Harris coming through big.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

Unhook the plow, Delmon! ! !

Shaun says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Wow way to go Harris!

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Atkins would be an interesting option. As would trading Span.

I’ve been wondering what we can do with him since there isn’t any room in the near future and he is obviously ready to play.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

Good thing they wasted Morneau’s hit….

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

And Punto comes through. The Magic Pencil strikes again.

mj1 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

great hit by harris , even if he does wear his pants like bob allison…..ok all you punto haters - start your bitchin now too…

johnny miller says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Most do-many dont-I am on boards all over the world, it’s called freedom of speech. Vote democrat and you will get rid of what little freedom we have left.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Punto is hitting .292 with that hit and 15 RBI. Not a bad option off the bench at short or third.

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:55 pm

Gardy is a genius. LNP is awesome! That’s why he’s starting, baby!

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Ouch! Some fodder for Punto haters!

johnny miller says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

punto does it again!!! Trade him!

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

TT, my only thing about Atkins was that it was based around the Rox wanting to deal Holiday (which was in rumblings earlier but has faded since), and them being interested in Cuddy.

Though Span could be a option (for simliar reasons as to why he’d be a good fit in SD).

jham13 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Finally some runs…keep it goin men!

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

I’m a republican…

mj1 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

two rally killing pickoffs…that cant be tolerated-you wont see anyone hardly leadoff now, the rest of the series…gotta be more alert…..

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Atkins was available last season, I wonder if they are still trying to move him.

Cleveland is trying to dump Casey Blake according to reports :)

johnny miller says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Twins Territory-You have what we call Minnesota Sports Fan paranoia!!Sap City

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Yeah, Lester must have a good move.

douche says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

JM- democrats would just be finishing the job the republicans started

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Telly….. it’s FEN way. Not FUN way.

Fenway Pahk.

Steve H says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

Actually I don’t think LNP is an “off the bench option” any longer, looks like he has been given the starting shortstop job, that right Gardy?

johnny miller says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

I used to be a rep–they left me and moved left and are running a dem in McCain. They deserve to lose to the socialist empty suit Obama.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

How has this turned into politics?

Razz says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

The Twins don’t need rally caps…tonight we have rally HATERS it seems! Keep up the good work jmarkson and clones…

Go Twins!

douche says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

this is a twins blog, keep your stupid politics out of here

ranuaw says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

3 runs won’t win tonite.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

TT: Atkins was being shopped last year until the Rox went on their run. But while I was reading the reports on Holiday they were mentioning that Colorado is ready to call up Ian Stewart (who is not available) That report is still circiling.

I saw Casey Blake was available as well, but I think the Twins are still reluctant to deal within the division, and I have concerns he could be a Monroe type “Hot against Twins and that’s it” guys.

jmarksor is a loser says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Great, now jmarksor is spewing political diarrhea

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

Yeah, we need five or ten runs!!!

twinsbandwagon says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:01 pm

wish you could’ve scored just one of those runs last night boys!

Dr. Don says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:02 pm

OMG, the Twins score 3 to take a lead, and people are still belly aching. I don’t believe it. Go Twins, stay aggressive, and we’ll win. Keep it up.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

About registration:
I’ve seen posters revealed before when some very personal info was brought up and the target of it went wild. I don’t think anyone should feel too secure here.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:04 pm

T, I really want to find a long-term 3B option.

It’s hard to see them sign someone like Lamb each year and have them not pan out.

jmarksorsucks says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

you do realize that even if they can reveal who posted the message by their email, i personally just made up an email so what are they really going to do about it

flafan says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:06 pm

Thank you Twins for sending my Rays Garza and Bartlett for that head case Young. As you can plainly see, he is a bust

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

Blackburn only has thrown 40 pitches through 4, hopefully he keeps it up

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

If Gardy’s magic pencil could only erase his boneheaded moves last night.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

They also reveal them by their IP address which you can ban from entering a site.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:07 pm

I think a Bostonian just cost his team an out.

Will the Fenway faithful beat up the kid?

Wow says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

And that was a terrible AB by go go

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

Tough night for Go-Go thus far…

flafan says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

Tony, don’t worry,Gardy will pull him and bring in another stiff like last nite and blow another one.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:08 pm

no. philly fans would

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

Wow, the imposter T is really dedicated.

Though I think “pitiful” and “sad” are a tidge more apt.

Wow says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

TT,
Dont give the kid the time of day. He will prob get banned

mj1 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

go go needs to sit sit for a bit

Tim says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:09 pm

I am sick and tired of bonehead baserunning by Gomez and Punto. That is Punto’s 3rd since coming back. Gomez - too many to count. Punto is the every day SS and should be. Gomez’s baserunning pales in comparison to his futile swings. The WhiiiFFF

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

Well, I have to get to the volleyball game so any comments from “me” hereinafter won’t be me. Have a good one all and hopefully we can get a win tonight!

Later.

Tim says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

I posted last night that Harris should have batted in the 8th - not Monroe. better contact hitter and in that game, at that point I could care less about the effect on the DH positon if Harris was forced to play later.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

Well, I have to get to the volleyball game so any comments from “me” hereinafter won’t be me.

Except I already said when the game was.

-2 for not paying attention troll.

J says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

You don’t have to apprise everyone all the time on your imposter take, T.

Personally I like the imposters comments enough to think that your the imposter anyways.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:14 pm

I agree mj1. Last time Go-Go got a day off he went on a great streak. Maybe they should let him have the daygame off and see what happens.

Tim says:

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

Sit Gomez? Or Young? Who needs it more?

Thankfully the bench gives either option. Young/Span/Kubel, Kubel/Gomez/Span.

Though I dunno if I like Kubel in RF at Fenway.

mj1 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:16 pm

if cuddy were healthy im afraid span would be playing alot more cf….that will happen when cuddy gets back if not sooner…maybe playing kubel in rt and move span to cf occasionally

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

we sure have gold glove pitchers.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

I say Gomez. Young has a hit tonight :)

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

How many times do we have to hear that “the key is he barehands the ball.” We freaking get it bert!

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Span does it again. Wow.

See, I think this is why if they sit Gomez, it shouldn’t be while they’re at Fenway. Span’s apparently figured out RF there.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

Blackburn did a solid job of working around that hit…

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:21 pm

My Gosh! He robbed another Foul/Home Run! ! !

mj1 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

like ive said many times..span is here to stay….no trades, no AAA no nothing ..the man is a twin period….

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

I think that was a foul ball, but still, wow.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

I just hope that when Cuddy returns it doesn’t mean Span and Gomez switch off or anything.

I’d much rather use Span as bait to get a player. Maybe a future 3B.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

mj1, if span stays, who goes?

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:23 pm

MudCat, it was only a foul ball…but any time you can make an out against Boston its nice to get it.

mj1 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

lamb is probably all but gone….you dont need to left handed 3b

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

TT: I agree it’s a tough spot. Do you try and deal Monroe for a prospect and risk losing that potential bench bat?

Or do you take a guy like Span who’s hot and could sell high and get something that could put them over now?

Frankly, I think it’s not fair to Span to put him in a bench/platoon type posistion the way he’s playing. Even less so to send him back.

His best value to this team is as trade bait, where he’ll get to a team that can play him everyday.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

IDK. Wouldn’t it have to be Monroe? They can’t keep six outfielders.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

I read somewhere (maybe here, I’m not totally sure), that Smith said “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it”.

That leads me to believe that if the Twins do anything, it’ll be very minimal.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

mj1, if Lamb goes they’d likely need somebody for 3B (Macri?) Unless they plan on making Punto/Harris/Buscher some kind of trifecta between SS and 3B.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:26 pm

I don’t think Lamb is going to be cut, he’s signed through next year. I also don’t think we get anything for him in a trade.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:27 pm

TT: You thinking addition by subtraction? (Dealing Lamb?)

I looked at it as they won’t do anything too dramatic (like trading a Kubel/Cuddyer type player) But would be open to putting something together using a guy like Span, Buscher…etc.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Lamb doesn’t have trade value, but I could see them cutting him.

What is the difference between now and the off-season? I don’t see them taking him into the season next year when they have two better options.

mj1 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

you are going to see gardy rest each of guys one day a week and start span- that way he gets 3-4 starts a week and they get a day off once a week or so…not a bad idea

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

How many times is bert going to call denard darnell?

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

gotta keep span. i can see gomez, casilla, and span being the future of team.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:29 pm

Excuse me sir, where was that pitch?

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

I’d like to see what would be there for Span. What teams would want him, and what would they offer?

I’d be willing to trade him for a 3B prospect that could help next season, or a 3B/SS that could come in this season and stay for a few years.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

Tony, I laugh everytime I hear that. I’m surprised nobody has told him.

mj1 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

harris and buscher are plenty at 3rd and you always have punto if you need and put harris at ss….they have plenty of infielders

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:30 pm

TT: Lamb could have Ortiz type trade value.

Heck, there was a team that wanted Cirillo last year off waivers.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

Jason Varitek STILL doesn’t belong in THAT group!

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

Methinks Blackburn’s issue throwing strikes stems more from the zone than his own abilities at the momeny.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

If we do trade Lamb, we will be responsible for a good portion of the contract. I don’t see any team wanting him enough to pay him what we’re paying him.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:33 pm

I guess a team would want Lamb. Who knows, maybe we could get someone like Macri back like we did with Ortiz (an underrated trade IMO).

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Tony, getting SOME help eating salary is better than none.

What were the details of the Ortiz deal? Didn’t the Twins end up eating some of that?

Brian says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:34 pm

Lamb is OBVIOUSLY the guy that ought to go once Cuddyer returns. But it will NEVER happen because Pohlad will never pay a player to not play. If you want to convince fans that you’re doing all it takes to win, then you should just admit that you messed up, cut Lamb, get on with the season. Do they actually think that fans want respect them for that?

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Ortiz wasn’t signed beyond the one year.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

I don’t remember the Ortiz deal as far as money goes. But we got more talent that I thought was possible.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Darnell………Coles? 3rd base, Mariners/Tigers. Maybe Bert is still having nightmares about him.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Solid job by Blackburn that inning. He is at just 66 pitches through six innings.

Gyromatic says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

“What were the details of the Ortiz deal? Didn’t the Twins end up eating some of that?”

LeCroy missed lunch that day, so he ate it for them.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

66 in 6 innings. Spooky.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:36 pm

Who is the other player that Bert messes up like he does with Denard?

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

that was mean, gyro.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:37 pm

I miss LeCroy. He needs to give up baseball and take the coaching job the Twins offered him this past spring.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

I’m glad Gardy played the percentages and got Harris in tonight

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

But it will NEVER happen because Pohlad will never pay a player to not play.

You mean like Ponson? Or Rincon?

TT: Darnell McDonald, who was up a bit last year.

Royster says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

The Twins didn’t eat anything on Ortiz, he was arbitration eligible and the Twins didn’t think he was worth what he would be awarded.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

hope we can get a fly ball TONIGHT!

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Oh, and I think they ate some of Cirillo’s when he was taken by the D-Backs last year.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Okay, lets get him in with just the one out…

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:39 pm

Royster: We’re talking Ramon Ortiz.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Royster, wrong ortiz.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Now that I think of it, I think by that time it was just something like $300,000 on Ortiz.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

T, the only difference between those players you listed and Lamb is that Lamb is signed beyond the current year. I’m not sure if they eat a year and a half of salary.

Royster says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

oops

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

I like that better than the Squeeze anyway.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Span was just nodding at the coach, what was he thinking………..nevermind!

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

That’s why I think they’ll work out something in the long run. Perhaps they eat part of his contract the next few years and get a AA guy or something for their troubles.

It takes the edge off, but still bites.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Tony, the only thing about Lamb’s second year is that I’m not sure they would want him in 2009 (or I hope not).

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Twins have plenty of salary space to wiggle with the next few years. If they could ever afford to eat a contract (all or in part) it’d be now.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Go-Go needs a hit here just to get him going again.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:45 pm

What about keeping span and trading gomez for some help?

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

That was an out? ? ?

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

I disagree on the call at 1st. But nice to see them get that run across.

Royster says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

The twins see more potential in GoGo than Span

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:47 pm

Nine outs away. 6 for somebody and 3 for Joe. I guess that’s quite a few, isn’t it.

Royster says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:48 pm

If GoGo ever gains some plate patience and harnesses his power he could be a potential #3 hitter.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

yeah, I tried to put a /sarcasm at the end, but I made it an actual tag and it didn’t show up.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Guerrier with the day off yesterday, he’d likely be available for the 8th.

Let’s hope Blackburn can have a quiet 7th.

Royster says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

with only 66 pitches it could be 6 outs for Blackburn, 3 for someone else (not Joe because the Twins will score again and it won’t be a save situation.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

way to back up the play

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

*shakes fist angrily at Youk*

He deserves the All-Star nod for sure.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

I think Go-Go could be very special if he learns some patience and when he becomes more seasoned.

He has some raw power, that is for sure. And he’ll get better on the bases with experience.

Span might be good, but I’d like to see more.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Blackburn needs to get these bottom three.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Go-Go has shown signs of improving this year already. You still see that youth shine through in clutch situations…he gets VERY antsy during those times.

I think by next year he’ll settle down. Perhaps he’ll get a chance to work with Casilla more in ST.

Royster says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:55 pm

How many fans do you think walk up to Blackburn and say “Can I have your autograph JOE?”

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Just some thoughts on Torii. He hit two homeruns the other day, but these are his overall season numbers:

.272 Average
12 Homeruns
41 RBI
9 Steals

I wouldn’t pay him $18 million per season for that personally.

Go-Go has a .263 average (which as dropped a lot in the past week), 21 steals, 30 RBI and 5 HR for his $300,000 per season.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Brandy Moss. lucky duck.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Looks like we’ll be needing Guerrier + Nathan for this one.

C’mon Burns, get this out and you can call it a night.

Deej says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

All the geniuses who were questioning the Harris, Punto, and Span lineup: they have 5 of the 7 hits and all 4 RBI’s on the night. That’s why Gardy is the manager and your at home….now, shut the F**K up! :B

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

At least we got an out. We’re up by two still…

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Royster: I’m glad I’m not the only one who thought about the similarity.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

Will the Twins yank him if he gets Lugo here? He has 82 pitches with a 2-1 count.

Deej says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

TwinsTErritory, I totally agree with your Torii take. I’d rather have Gomez.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:58 pm

C’mon Span, make a play! just kidding.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:58 pm

Deej, thankyou for that wonderfully insightfull comment.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 7:59 pm

Wow, the Red Sox are taking out Cash.

Good job by Blackburn. He started getting hit around (that triple by Youk was scary enough)

This is Reyes job. Just need one out and we can get to Guerrier/Nathan.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:00 pm

So Blackburn is done and Reyes is coming in. If he can do this, I’d think it’d be Guerrier and Nathan for the eighth and ninth.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Francona with the ol’ Bait n’ Switch. But I think Gardy was going to be pulling Blackburn anyway.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Strange move. That was a waste of a player because Casey was announced and can’t be used now.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Well done Reyes.

Me Too says:

Kinda cool to see those guys leave the blog, since you know that the Twins are doing just fine 8)

yeah, i’m just commonly observing this blog cause my work comp has any decent sites for viewing the game blocked. But I too have noticed that the negativity has left the room

Royster says:

Guerrier is a given, but I still say the Twins score again, and steal the save away from Joe.

MudCat says:

Good job.
This is funny; looks like Punto.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

Solid start to the inning.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:06 pm

I don’t think Morneau will be asked to be in the Derby, he’s publically said he didn’t like what it did to his swing, so I think they’d almost figure he’d turn it down.

Thome has in the past, Rodriquez is this year.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

OK! now bunt him……….forget that, don’t bunt.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:07 pm

It’s been a while since he’s hit a HR.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

I thought I heard/read somewhere that morneau really wanted to participate in the derby.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

Just like last night.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

There is only like one spot left I think…

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

He wanted to last season, but he said it hurt his swing in the second half and he said this year he’d rather let someone else have a shot at it.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

The only thing I saw about Morneau and the Derby was about how he hadn’t been asked yet. And he joked “They haven’t asked all the good players yet.”

Deej says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Morneau will be in the HR derby if asked…it’s the last hurrah at Yankee Stadium and he’d love to be part of the last Midsummer Classic HR Derby at NY’s Bronx Bomber stadium.

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Monroe is not looking good at the plate.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

Maybe they should have Mauer in the Derby. He doesn’t have a homer swing…so maybe it’d “break” that and he’d start hitting them?

/wild theory

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:11 pm

The Twins have all day games left except for Friday.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Monroe like last night also. Shoulda pinch hit Kubel.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Kelly Theiser wrote this today:

On Tuesday night, Mauer was in the lineup to face southpaw Jon Lester, which means that Mike Redmond will likely be behind the plate to face right-hander Josh Beckett for Wednesday’s day game.

I’m not sure that would be right. Him playing today against a lefty would likely mean he does play tomorrow wouldn’t you think?

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Why not bunt them over to second and third? I know it’s small ball, but it’s better than taking a chance with Monroe.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Yeah, I can’t imagine Gardy would sit Mauer against Boston’s ace. If anything, you’d have seen him sit today in favor of facing Beckett tomorrow.

Deej says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

It’s a day game after a night game…more than likely that means Red-Dog at the C.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

That’s what I was thinking and that’s actually what they mention on TV as well.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:14 pm

Monroe isn’t paid to bunt. Course, he’s not paid to do that either.

Also, don’t know how fast he is (and I KNOW how fast Morneau isn’t). I could see them potentially nailing Morneau at 2nd if not potentially a DP.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

Pinch hit Kubel. Should be pinch hitting.

TwinsTerritory says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Delmon has let three go by including one down the middle. Impressive.

Deej says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

Teams rarely pinch-hit when they are ahead. It just doesn’t happen much.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

Good thing they didn’t pinch hit for Young.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

I haven’t been paying much attention to the radar gun, has it been running high tonight? Last night it seemed to be reading a couple mphs fast.

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

Willie Norwood says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

Not too long ago I was of the opinion that the primary need for the Twins was a 3B, especially one who could hit for power from the right side. I’ve come to believe that having another “power” arm in the pen would be useful for the 8th inning. I can’t recall the year but we once had a bevy of flamethrowers (Hawkins, Rincon, Balfour, can’t recall)and it served us well.

Maybe the brain wizards could find us that 96 mph or so reliever who could solidify the pen…7th: Crain/Guerrier/lefthander; 8th: New power arm/Guerrier; 9th: Nathan.

Does anybody have any names on teams that are setting/have set slowly into oblivion? I think a decent fireballer might be a “small” move that could pay dividends.

schurik says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:30 pm

BayAreaTwinsFan says:

Unbelivable. Giving up another double. Fenway is ridiculous. Advantage=Boston.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

So the Twins needs as demonstrated this series appear to be a more reliable set-up man and a 3B?

Deej says:

You gotta be kidding. Of course Nathan is no where to be found. What happened to the bullpen. Wow

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

How many 6-out closers are there? Anybody have stats on how many 6-out saves have been recorded this year (by traditional closers anyway?

Well, 2nd guessing activate. Last night they should’ve used anybody but Bass…tonight anybody buy Bass/Reyes/Guerrier.

My guess, tomorrow it’ll be “The starter should never have been pulled”

Bill Brasky says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

None of this surprises me at all. We’ve never played well in Boston. We can beat up on the crappy teams at home but….

Today’s secret word: “Schadenfreude”

Shaun says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

T,

Neither was I since I just got home!

Don’t even need Nathan to get 6 outs-just get out of the damn inning with the lead, whether its was a 4 or 5 out save. I know a guy in NY who has done well doing that for about 12 years.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

Meh. Manny’s hero tonight. Then tomorrow he’ll k once and they’ll start booing him and demand he be traded.

Then cheer for his single later on in the same game. Those Bostonians are a fickle bunch.

Nora says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

What is our record at Fenway lately? Since we apparently never do well in Fenway I’d like to see the facts to back that up. Obviously not so good this year.

Bill Brasky says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

BTW, Manny should get a fastball in the ear for pimping his HR like that.

Of course Gardy won’t do anything about it because he’s gutless.

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:40 pm

mauer and morneau never got anything to hit last night in the eighth. why should manny. i don’t figure.

Mechanic says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:41 pm

Good Job bullpen, you are ALL FIRED

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

I’d say Gardy wouldn’t throw at Manny because the last thing you want to do is give the Boston lineup a free baserunner.

Nora says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

Yes, Nathan is making alot of money for 1 inning. I think we can’t stretch him to 1 and 1/2 maybe. Geesh.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:42 pm

T,

i was at the game last night, i didn’t hear anything negative about Manny when i was there. They love the guy.

Nora says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Fenway is the best home ballpark to have ask Boston. Unbelievable. Argh.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

I’d have gone to Guerrier to start the inning. Don’t know how much different it would’ve gone, but it follows the formula better.

Why isn’t Kubes in here?

Nora says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Great. Punto is of course hitting.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:43 pm

Who does Kubel pinch hit for?

Shaun says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:44 pm

I turned it off since apparently me watching was bad luck. I hope for a comeback but geez talk about a momentum killer.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:44 pm

T - I have no problem leaving reyes in to pitch to a lefty.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:45 pm

Thanks Shawn for the view from the seats. Going by media you’d think they wanted him killed out there (at least after that 3 pitch K a few nights back)

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Pinch hit for gomez?

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

This series reminds me of the Boston/Yankees series back at the Dome. Hard fought nailbiters that came down to the bullpens.

This time, ours lost.

Ron says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Time for Gardy to start thinking of saving leads in the eighth by using Nathan instead of watching the rest of these guys blow leads. Last week Crain, this week Guerrier. Ugh!!

Twins fan since '61 says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

Guerrier has been a train wreck lately. We have been lucky in some of his other outings that the opposing players have hit screaming line drives right at players. I would be surprised if his fast ball hasn’t lost 3 or 4 mph from last year. Geez with Crain throwing so poorly, Bonser is beginning to look like the only right handed alternative. I am amazed that Breslow is used so infrequently, he has been really good in his brief appearances but Gardy is really anal when it comes to lefties only throwing to lefties.

savvyspy says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:46 pm

This bullpen is so overrated. Its one thing to do it against the Padres, Nationals, and Indians. Its a completely different story against legit teams. The next couple of weeks will see this team fall back to earth. Gardy should lose his job for bringing Brian Bass into a 0-0 game in the 8th. Maybe after Manny hits a grand slam against Crain tomorrow night, Gardy will figure this thing out.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Dang it….I forgot about Harris being in at 3B. Would it work to PH Kubes for Casilla and then slide everybody over and put Buscher at 3B?

danimals says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

even aguilera would pitch more than 1 inning and he had multiple arm injuries!!

i agree, why isnt kubel PH??

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

i think the media in Boston hates Manny. He has that kind of “manny being manny” thing that probably gets under their skin

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

For as many times as people have wanted Nathan to pitch 2-innings…his arm would be shot by now.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:48 pm

we have to get to casilla, i’d say kubes for gomez

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

Nora says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

Nice ab so far by Punto though

danimals says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

why couldnt we put in lamb at 3B and slide harris to SS? i know it’s not good defense, but you have to tie/lead the game to play defense in the bottom of the 9th on the road!

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:50 pm

I guess that’s why we don’t ph for punto

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:52 pm

BTW:

F. Rodriquez: 35/37 saves, 38.1 IP
G. Sherril: 27/32, 38.2
J. Papelbon: 26/30, 38.2
J. Nathan: 25/27, 36.2
M. Rivera: 23/23, 40.1
J. Soria: 23/25, 39.0

Interpret them how you will, but Nathan appears to be right on pace with some of the other top closers.

Nora says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Grrr. Kubel!

Shaun says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Yep, there’s your Kubel!

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:55 pm

A sacfly is a lot less risky to bank on than the squeeze.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:55 pm

So Monroe and Kubel essentially do what the other did last night…tonight.

Deej says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Umm, this is Jason Kubel we are talking about…he happens to whiff quite a bit. Never understood the fascination of a guy who has had 1/2 a decent season in his career.

T says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Well, I guess i don’t have to worry about my games tonight. I have a feeling they’ll be cancelled on account of the falling sky.

Nora says:

July 8th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Grrrrrr! We always get so close to beating Papelbon and then get nothing. I don’t think moving guys over and wasting an out is a good idea against Papelbon.

Kubel whiffs quite a bit? would you rather have had gomez bat?

That was one hell of a good game again tonight. Tough loss, our pups are still playing with the big boys, and this is our rebuilding year. Now let’s hear from all of the negatives again, instead of just enjoying a great game the Twins played against a great Red Sox team. Tomorrow is a new day, a new game, gotta come out and play a new one tomorrow.

Extremely predictable game. The really good teams never go away. Have fun the rest of the year as your batting average continues to go down with RISP.

You can’t rely on that!

What a tough decision. Watch America’s Got Talent or watch the Twinkies. I guess I made the right decision.

Another close game. This one should have been a win…more so than yesterday. But it was close and the Twins have played these guys straight up in their home park where they’re tough to beat. Things are still looking good. Hope the Chisox lose tonight.

America’s Got Talent? Boston has talent!
They’re world champs. We’ll get ‘em tomorrow. (manny is a fanny)

“Those Bostonians are a fickle bunch.”

At least they have winning sports teams.

Well, in searching for a silk purse I would imagine that a smart front office would look at how we have, to date, stacked up against one of the league’s gold standards and decided that there may, after all, be some tweaking that may be in order for this year and beyond.

Reading the article today about the Twins being neither buyers or sellers was a bit disturbing indicating inaction but these two games have to show the powers that they are, at least, in the hunt…with some adjustments.

I think scouring the teams that are in the barrel already for a high powered, low profile bullpen arm might be in order. If one is creative it shouldn’t cost much.

Another righthanded bat that can hit for average and occasional gap power would help as well…perhaps at 3B, perhaps as a replacement for Monroe…whatever.

Realistically, the Twins aren’t looking too bad if they choose to compete for this year or “build.” Perhaps an answer or two is down on the farm (especially a power reliever, but who knows?)

Billy S. has an interesting choice, but really his isn’t as tough as in past years…they aren’t that far away. But the race goes to those who go after winning it. We’ll see if Mr. Smith has the imagination.

A few things…

Guerrier should’ve been in the game, but from the start of the eighth. Putting him in with a runner on makes things worse for him.

I know Kubel is a lefty, but I still don’t see how it was a good move to bring him in. Go-Go could possible surprise them with a bunt or something and Kubel strikes out a lot too. He looked terrible up there.

I’m done for the night. Hopefully I can let this one go…

The problem with the bullpen is they don’t have “power” arms like they have in the past.

kubel for gomez upset me. i’d rather watch Pope Carlos Gomez bat with one out and a runner on second than kubel. and if this had gone to extra innings, wtf happens then? twins try to win without gomez? bass last night, kubel tonight. i love them both, but NOT IN THOSE SITUATIONS.

Royals over Sox by one in the sixth. O’Contrare pitching for ChiSox. They’ll come back, I’m afraid.

no trades. who would we unload? cuddyer? he’s the only extra piece now, and gomez/span haven’t stood the test of time yet. if we unload anyone, we want pitching. starters. look at rochester and we are suddenly not as comfortable as before. ever IF liriano recovers.

Tony says:

July 8th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

Bringing in Kubel was the right call. It gives you the lefty/righty matchup, and kubes strikes out less and has more power. Kubes would have gone to right, span to center.

Buscher and Harris=Pags and Leius?
Well, ok, i suppose.

bringbackjohnmoses says:

Punto is an all-start snub……he should have tried for a triple in the 9th.

Harris is hot….won’t start tomorrow

Why bunt span…free out

Was it Red Wings Poster Night at Fenway

That was a playoff preview…stiffs vs. studs in the 9th….and it is football season again.

Can Chris Simon pitch?

MudCat says:

July 8th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

KC 5, CHI 3 in the seventh. That would help.

tom says:

July 8th, 2008 at 9:20 pm

id rather have gomez bat for a sac fly in the top of the ninth. call me crazy, but the player who plays every day vs. a situational player should win every time with the game on the line, regardless of splits or whatever else the statisticians throw out there.

Patrick says:

This one wasn’t Gardy’s fault. Hell, last night’s wasn’t Gardy’s fault even though he made some bad calls. This time I think he made the right calls and our guys just didn’t execute.

This one is more frustrating than last night for me. This almost makes me wish I wasn’t in love with baseball. If my sport was football at least I could potentially only get apoplectic 16 times a year.

These two losses hurt but if the Twinks decide to get angry instead of becoming dejected, maybe we can learn to close out games and take advantage of the oppurtunities that arise instead of folding. I’m trying to look at the bright side.

Melodramatic I know, but I do think these next 5 games decide our season.

Maybe the mystique of Fenway is too much for our young guys. Who knows. I’m going to have a beer or five.

It is quite clear what this team needs going ahead, be it finishing off this season or heading into next season: A bullpen. The last three losses the twins have suffered are on the ineffective bullpen we have ‘backing up’ our young starting pitchers. Three times now in a week and a day has the bullpen taken the loss, and that to me is unacceptable. Robbing these young pitchers of quality starts is the most disgusting part of the last two games and the game against the tigers. Bill Smith may say there are no glaring flaws in this team, well looky here, I found a big flaw that needs to be fixed asap. These next games won’t decide the season and to say so is foolish. How many people would have thought the Twins would be over .500 at the all-star break after that horrible white sox series? Seasons in baseball are not decided by one series but instead a collection of every series as a whole. The twins are going to lose at least 30-45 more games this year, that’s baseball, get over it. This last lost is embarrassing to any Twins fan and the entire Twins coaching staff and most certainly the bullpen. The game should have ended with a Twins win and there are zero excuses. The bullpen was certainly not overworked in the last two weeks so there is only one conclusion left, they suck right now and they probably will continue to suck. Bill Smith must work very hard to get a quality bullpen arm, or I am afraid this might not be the last embarrassing loss of the season.

I didn’t have a problem with bringing in Kubel but Jason needs to know the situation there. His objective is not necessarily to get a base hit, but to get solid contact to drive that run home. He looked at two fastballs, the first outside corner but hittable, the second inside corner and very hittable. After that he was done.

I don’t “blame” Gardenhire but I am never shocked when his late inning moves or lack thereof do not pan out. Why don’t you bunt when there are runners on 1st and 2nd and nobody out? Delmon came through, but personally I’d like to have 2nd and 3rd or bases loaded with one out rather than 1st and 2nd with one out. Having to rely on players the caliber of Craig Monroe is why the Twins will not win the World Series. Harris’s terrible at bat didn’t help matters there either. What was he thinking, trying to pull an outside pitch when the last thing you can have there is a DP? Again, know the darn situation. Why do you pitch to Manny when 1st base is open with one out? A ballsy, non-standard choice would be to ask Nathan to get him and preserve the lead when Guerrier clearly didn’t have it tonight. But that would be asking Gardenhire to think out of the box and actually have a contingency plan instead of sitting on the front step chewing his gum. Why is Reyes starting the 8th, after having to sit through the top of the inning, something that he never does?

As far as the bullpen goes, you have 3 choices:
1. Stand put and continue to lose games like this because you don’t have a reliable set up man.
2. Go and get a reliable set up man. Is there anyone in Rochester?
3. Ask Nathan to get 4,5, or 6 outs once in a while, especially when your setup man clearly did not have it tonight, instead of blowing a 3 run lead. Would Gardy have sat there on the front step chewing gum and let his team give up a 4 run lead before going to hs all-star closer? How about a 5 run lead? 6 anyone? That’s what the cook book says, right? That Nathan must only start the 9th?

The question has been asked and answered over and over. It doesn’t need repeating.
Nathan will continue to pitch one inning only in save opportunities unless he is not getting enough work.
Most MLB closers are handled the same way.
The idea is to win as many games as possible over the whole season, not burn him out now just because the Twins are playing the Red Sox.
You don’t have to agree with that answer, BUT THAT IS THE ANSWER!!!!
