Gomez crashes into wall, leaves game on a stretcher

Posted on July 25th, 2008 – 6:26 PM
By Joe Christensen

CLEVELAND — Twins center fielder Carlos Gomez crashed into the outfield wall to make a first-inning catch tonight and lay on the warning track for several minutes before leaving Progressive Field on a stretcher.

Gomez, 22, appeared to injure his right hip. He raced into the left-center field gap to take a hit from Cleveland’s Ben Francisco. Grady Sizemore tagged up at second base and scored on the play.

From his side, Gomez flipped the ball to left fielder Delmon Young, who fired the ball back to the infield.

Updates as we get them.

Update (6:30 p.m.): Denard Span moved from right field to center field, and Jason Kubel entered the game in right field.

Gomez hit the wall at full speed, with the ride side of his body taking the brunt of the collision. After making the catch, he grabbed his right hip area.

Update (6:35 p.m.): Gomez was diagnosed with a lower back injury and taken to the Lutheran Hospital for precautionary tests. He had all movement and feeling, the Twins announced. Gomez was fitted with a neck brace on the field.

And Span has just crashed into the wall, too, in nearly the same spot. Span was shaken up but appears to be OK. He was trying to catch a two-run double by Kelly Shoppach when he collided with the wall, and the ball dropped out of his glove.

Nothing looked out of sorts when he was lying on the ground, hopefully that means it isn’t a dislocation.

stay away from the wall

Span almost went down too.

At least Livan is giving us fodder to replace him with Franchise.

Not a good start tonight. I think Liriano will be taking Livan’s turn in the rotation

Matt Geurts says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:37 pm

Livan is going to get our outfielders killed tonight. The Indians are smashing the ball and our guys are crashing into the walls left and right. Span just came up limping after chasing the ball into the fence. Get rid of Hernandez and bring up Liriano!!!

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Dear Mr. Smith,

Please, if you need to keep Livan around. Don’t let him start on the road again.

vic says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:39 pm

and this is a bad Cleveland team, Liriano needs to be up.

SoCal Jeff says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:40 pm

I want Franchise to replace Livan SOOOO freakin bad, but I just don’t see it happening. Livan is useless out of the pen, and even though they probably should, I don’t see them letting him go to some other team for nothing. Nobody’s going to give us anything for him the way he’s been playing and he’s not going to accept an assignment. But, gosh…not only are we going to lose with Hernandez pitching, he’s going to get all of our young guys hurt!!!

RL says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:44 pm

I don’t understand (and never will) the “he’s got experience” philosophy. Oh yeah, Livan’s got experience alright. Experience stinking.

It actually hurts to think of the fact that he’s in our starting rotation, and we’re in contention for the playoffs….and we have so many more viable options than him. I’d sooner bring Shooter Hunt up from Beloit than see more Livan.

dj werner says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:46 pm

down 4 against Lee? Start looking towards tomorrow. Every time i say something negative about the twins they make me eat my words. here;s hoping that happens again tonight

Matt Geurts says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

Get Livan OUT OF THE GAME…THIS is UGLY already and there are no outs in the 2nd inning!!!

Mike says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

I agree Livan’s not going anywhere. I just don’t understand the logic. 5-0 in the second inning. Just make him go away, please… He costs too many games. He’s won as many as he has because he’s gotten outrageous run support.

SoCal Jeff says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:48 pm

It won’t get much better with Boof…

AJ says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:50 pm

I wish Livan would go to the hospital.

E-Rack says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

Too bad on Gomez…now if Livan suffered a career ending injury…nothing would be sweeter than that.

ThunderingHerd says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:51 pm

I sure hope this is Livans last start as a Twin. I don’t think he could look much worse through the order the first time. Pretty much every ball has been killed.

Going Yard says:

That’s really tacky to ask for someone to be injured

Tony says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Daniel1966 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

Mr Matt Geurts, I was thinking exactly those thoughts. Careful what you say on these threads for fear that the ProTector will ream you for saying anything derogatory about the Twins management.

Going Yard says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:52 pm

“twins” - that is………..

TwinsFix says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:54 pm

At least we get to see Span in center tonight. Here’s hoping Gomez gets sent down to Rochester when Cuddyer comes back.

TwinsFix says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

There’s a nice double from Kubel. Lee is hittable tonight, so don’t count these Twinkies out just yet.

Knock him in, Span.

Going Yard says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:57 pm

Hey Tony - at least these are only words that the players will never see. You want to see physical abuse????? Take a look at what Livan is doing to our outfielders with his BP pitching. What a sorry excuse for an MLB pitcher.

TwinsFix says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:58 pm

One down, four more to go.

Tony says:

July 25th, 2008 at 6:59 pm

I never said he was a good pitcher. I don’t think it’s worth wishing harm on the guy though. He isn’t trying to be awful, he just is.

Going Yard says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:00 pm

make that 5 for the win!

Disco says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:02 pm

Twins work hard for the runs they score. Other teams get it easy against us. Just keep circling the bases….

Going Yard says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:02 pm

I don’t wish harm on him, I wish Bullpen or Minor League or Designated for Assignment or for the front office to turn back the calendar to when they signed him (with a serious case of buyers remorse)

Tony says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Well, then we are in complete agreement.

ThunderingHerd says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:05 pm

Nice double play to bail Livan out. With out the twins defense it would be 10-0 at the end of the third.

Matt Geurts says:

Yeah! An inning without Livan giving up a run!! Started with a double though….

I’ll bet Gomez ends up on the DL.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

Everett to a team with a terrible starting SS for late inning replacement… what we get back is low prospect

Going Yard says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:12 pm

What do you do when Cuddyer is healthy??

thrylos98 says:

Way to go Punto…

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Casilla/Punto team up for an error.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:17 pm

Punto/Casilla BOTH!

But they redeem it on the next play.

Daniel1966 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Livan sure has a way of making .215 hitters like Guttirez look Ruthian. But don’t worry friends, everything is well under control. We have a plan!

TwinsFix says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Going Yard,

You send Gomez to Rochester and move Span to center.

ThunderingHerd says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:18 pm

Bad error by casilla. At least he got the second attempt right and got Livan out of another inning.

thrylos98 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:19 pm

Twins Fix,

when Everett is healthy (and he is pretty healthy right now):

Punto traded
Everett the starting SS

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

i’d be for that thrylos

i really hate watching LNP play

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:20 pm

Everett doesn’t get back on the roster if I’m BS. Punto does Everett’s job and covers more positions off the bench (where he BELONGS)

TwinsFix says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

Thrylos98,

I would seriously hesitate to trade Punto. He has an outstanding glove most of the time, and did a fine job earlier this year when he was a defensive sub. I say resign him and keep him in that role.

As to Everett, I’m not looking forward to his .189/.235/.324 line. I would designate him for assignment, or trade him to some sucker team that is desperate. I can not imagine the Twins making him the starting SS. He already has four errors this year, in very small sample size.

But that is not considering what we can get out of Punto.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:22 pm

I’ll add that neither Punto or Everett will bring anything of value in a trade. If a team even wants them…

Punto and Everett both are FAs after this season.

thrylos98 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

just an observation:

why is Cliff Lee allowed to have a ‘foreign substance’ on his cap (looks like rosin and it might be, but it could be vaseline) and touch it before every pitch?

methinks that the rules are pretty straight about that.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:24 pm

If fans are serious about the playoffs, Punto is of much greater value over the long haul.

Everett is a SS. That’s IT.

Punto has multiple positions he can play which means in the playoffs he’ll be able to give Gardy more options off the bench and more flexibility in who he can pinch hit for (Punto can play 3B, SS, 2B, and OF in an emergency)

This would be especially helpful if (according to some) this team wants to go all the way.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

methinks that the rules are pretty straight about that.

I’m surprised Gardy hasn’t been said anything yet.

Daniel1966 says:

Not that I would wish injury on anyone, but justice would be served if there was a wall around the mound that Livan could run into. Much like the Span v. Gomez situation that might just have taken care of itslef, it might make the Lirano decision a bit easier.

Seriously, if this team is going to make an effort to contend, Livan has to move to the pen or the waiver wire. His record has NOTHING to do with the way he’s pitched. Are you going to tell me that a guy like Rich Harden, who has half the wins Livan has, is half the pitcher. Be gone, livan.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

Not that I would wish injury on anyone, but justice would be served if there was a wall around the mound that Livan could run into.

You could just get up and charge into the nearest wall at your place and I think we can call it even.

Not that I’m wishing injury on anybody or anything…

Going Yard says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

the twins have some serious decisions to make once Everett and Cuddyer are healthy. Based on the numbers, Everett doesn’t have the stuff to take anyones job on the current roster, and Cuddyer?? He would NEVER have made some of the plays in the outfield that we’ve seen from Span in the last few weeks. His bat is nothing to brag about this year either (the year after a major $$ signing) I’d much rather see Gomez in the lineup batting 9th, than Cuddyer in there.

Daniel1966 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:42 pm

Mr. Wolves, Didn’t you hear that Livan has joined Bill Smith, our Boof, and Gardy in participating in a Weightwatchers program? I didn’t either.

ThunderingHerd says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:43 pm

Another good night for Span. Its looks like the decision to bring him up, then have him leadoff took far to long and may have cost the twins some wins. Hopefully Gardy and Smith can learn from that mistake and bring up Liriano.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Wow. Morneau the rally killer. Maybe he should be batting 9th…

thrylos98 says:

Gardy just makes the lineup. During the game he has his head up you know where…

TwinsFix says:

It’s simple, really. Send Gomez to Triple A. Move Span to center. Put Cuddyer back in right.

Daniel1966 says:

If the Twins can hold them in the 6th and get a rally going in the 7th, I think the mood here might just change. We’ll see…

ArizonaTwinsFan says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

Guys, have you forgotten that (coming into tonight) Livan has pitched the most innings for the Twins this season. He gives the bullpen a night or two off. Sometimes you have to suck it up and know that the ball is going to be hit, isn’t that the reason there are 7 fielders behind him??

JustinCB says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:54 pm

AAAAARRRGGGGHHHH…. and the freaking yankees just scored Nady and Marte from the Pirates for 4 guys only one of whom has any major league experience and he has like a 6 something era. Every year…. please make it stop. And then Gomez gone too? It was probably about time for him to take a break with the slump and all but I really wasn’t hoping it would happen this way. Guess this twins w/ 4 outfielders ‘problem’ has really worked out. Span comes in and gets a (precious, all of the sudden with the 4th most run-scoring twins in the league) RBI. Did I mention I HATE the Yankees? I can’t even enjoy their third place season w/out them doing something to piss me off!

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

I’ve said it time and time again…for the most part, Livan has ONE bad inning. He gets into big trouble and starts to look on the ropes.

Once he gets through that inning (for better or for worse) he usually settles down again.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

It’s too bad the Pirates didn’t have a 3B the Twins needed. Maybe they could’ve struck a deal.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Tabata is one of the Yanks best prospects though. And Ohlendorf was good…. well against the Twins earlier this year.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:02 pm

Tabata? Heh. Wasn’t he one of the guys the Twins were asking about during the Santana talks?

“Hughes, Tabata, Jackson…” ?

bclem says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

T - are you Dick Bremer,…quit excusing bad pitching. You put your team down a five-spot in the first two innings, and you aren’t going to win many. Excusing “one bad inning” just bad logic. Five runs are five runs,…one inning, two inning, five innings. You give up five runs per game, and you are going to lose a lot more than you win.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

I have seen him play once in AA, didn’t do anything for me, but i know they are high on him.

T says:

TwinsFix says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

Discussion starter: six-man rotation?

I think that it should be seriously considered, but I can’t tell the Twins to do it. It would allow Liriano to come up, and would give the young starters an extra day off every week.

And don’t tell me that it messes with the mentality of the pitchers. They are professionals. If they can’t deal with it, they should leave.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:13 pm

Kubel got SCREWED in that AB. He had a 4-0 walk and the ump wouldn’t give it to him.

thrylos98 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

That Yankees trade just established what Beltre is worth (and it is not any of the current starters for the Twins)

Still I think that the best name of the players traded was Phil Coke

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:16 pm

If they’re going to call up Liriano, they have to dump somebody to make room.

That would mean either Bass (move Livan to the pen) or Livan (5-man rotation)

If Liriano comes up, it’ll be a 5-man rotation one way or another.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

So thrylos, do you think the Twins can maybe make Beltre happen now?

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:17 pm

The Twins aren’t going to do anything. Coomer cleared that up bagging Liriano on the broadcast. What the hell is wrong with this organization. Its almost like they are pissed that they have a decent record this year.

TwinsFix says:

thrylos98 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:22 pm

T,

I think (based on what is written in the media outside of the Twin Cities) that the Twins are working to make Beltre happen.

On the other hand… Seattle has a rookie interim GM who wants to keep the job past this season. It’s a toss up

JustinCB says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:23 pm

Denard with 3 hits vs. Lee tonight. The only bright spot really about tonight. Keith Law on espn has been dissing him and the Twins since they picked him. Nice to see that back in his face so far. Somebody even brought it up to him in an espn chat just maybe a month ago and he was all ‘well he hasn’t had many at bats yet in the majors.’ We’ll see Keith…. we’ll see. Lookin good so far Mr. Minor League prospect guru man…. we’ll see…

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

The fact Livan can give up five runs in two innings and go maybe another 6 speaks volumes of his poise.

His talent not so much, but his head’s in the game. Guys like Blackburn who get rattled after a bad play, big hit, or bad luck can learn a LOT.

Also, you can kiss any “CHEAP!” comment goodbye, as they could’ve just as easily been pulling Livan in games such as these rather than let him reach his innings bonus.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:25 pm

I dunno Daniel, the comments from Gardy in Joe’s first blog and the Commentary from Coomer and Bert just pissed me off. They were purposely trying to downgrade what Liriano did in AAA. Probably trying to give his agent a big F U.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Seattle has a rookie interim GM who wants to keep the job past this season. It’s a toss up

And you’ve got Smith as a rookie GM trying to prove he knows what’s best for this team.

catcher, not pitcher.

sobeleo says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:45 pm

tie run on 2nd w/ no outs, all we need is two fly balls, and we can’t get it out of the infield (two of them went to the pitcher). sad.

ThunderingHerd says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Blew a good oppurtunity for a comeback. The Twins play small ball all the time except when the situation really calls for it. Down by 1, no outs and a runner at second would have been a good time to try to bunt then get the sac fly.

thrylos98 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

Tie run on second 2 outs, is simple:

Sacrifice bunt to 3rd
Sacrifice bunt home…

Duh

don’t you love the manager of the millennium that the Twins have?

arschlach says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:47 pm

On 4 game losing streak, 2 out, tying run on second, bottom of 9th, yeah, I think this is just what LNP needs….ooops. He goes 0-4.

T says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:48 pm

Well, they made the Tribe sweat. It’s more than they accomplished vs. the Yankees.

Mudcat says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:49 pm

Yah, but Sobe, one was a lucky catch by the first baseman and the other a lucky bounce off the pitching mound.

Not that it matters much.

thrylos98 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:50 pm

Well,

the Sox are loosing

and tomorrow is another day

and I so wish that Smith trades Toby for anything so he can deliver a message….

Tyler says:

Tough loss… Why couldn’t have redmond bunted?

Thrylos

So you say that other media outlets besides the Twins cities outlets, say that the Twins are still negotiating with the M’s for Beltre. Its not that i dont believe you, but the only other rumor i heard that the Twins were still negotiating was from Jayson Stark’s Rumblings. Where else have you heard that the Twins are still trying to get this done?

Also I hope that Yankees/Pirates deal makes the M’s ask for less and get this deal done. Maybe just two or three good prospects could get it done without one of our young SP’s. Then the Twins could offord to trade Livan and a prospect to a team desperate for a back end starter and get a strong bull pen arm. That would be too good to be true though.

sobeleo says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

true.
what a waste of a comeback, and livan pitching pretty well after his typical one inning blow-up per game :(

still, even if we can escape cleveland being 3.5 back we can be right back there with a sweep next week.

Mudcat says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:53 pm

Actually Jermaine Dye just homered with AJ on to give Sox 6-5 lead, top of ninth.

ThunderingHerd says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:54 pm

Even though Livans first three innings cost us the game, his pitching late into the game saved the bullpen shich will hopefully help win a game too done the road for the Twins full schedule in the next week. That was the only thing good about his outing though.

Willie Norwood says:

Five losses in a row.

It has come to this. The brain trust has to decide if they want to cast the season aside this week or not. They’ve played their cute little Nickies. They’ve had their little Harris’ rutting around in the mud. They’ve tried to not believe that they’re a real team that has a shot.

Ok, Billy and Jimmy Pohlad. Send the message. Go ahead. Tell all of us that you think we can’t make it/don’t have a shot like you did last year.

The brain wizards act like they have a plan…they don’t. The fact is that since Andy MacPhail walked out the door this organization has done all it could to show that it is content with being “just short.”

Come on Billy Smith, Jimmy Pohlad. Here is your time. You have to decide with, 59 or so games left if you are real or fake. Take your peckers out and show us if you have the guts. You don’t have to “mortgage the future”…you can make moves that last beyond your precious opening night in April 2010. If you’re smart you can do both.

These guys could be…could be out of the race by the end of business on Sunday. If the Twins management lets another opportunity go by and, in essence, replicate the marooning of the locker room by trading Castillo last year then they can rot in hell for all I care.

You have a chance to win this effing division. Go. Do. It.

F. your “plan”

Otherwise get out of the way and find someone with some testicles and imagination to run the team.

You got your palace coming on line in a year. Throw us a crumb, for crying out loud.

Nick Punto?

thrylos, you’re crazy. redmond’s job was to hit the ball the other way , which he did. at the very least, he wanted to ground out so delmon could get to third. it was unfortunate it found garko’s glove. if that ball is 2 inches off to the right, that game is tied and the conversation is flipped to “wow what a move by gardy! he knew red would hit it the other way!”

and i haven’t heard of any “sacrifice” bunts to sacrifice the runner home. that’s a suicide squeeze, and harris was up. from what i haven’t seen harris bunt the ball all year, so i don’t think he’s the guy to do that.

whalefeet says:

July 25th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

well at least we didn’t lose just like the tigers just did, wow. that’s a killer.

ThunderingHerd says:

July 25th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

what happened to the tigers?

gatty790 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

The sad thing about the ninth was that even if Delmon Young was standing 30 feet from home plate he wouldn’t have scored. This is going to be a very tough week for the Twins, if they are 5 games out or better at the end of the next two series that is basically all you can ask for.

LasVegasDave says:

July 25th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

No, we have enough hitters.

whalefeet says:

July 25th, 2008 at 9:09 pm

tigers were up 5-4 in the 9th with 2 outs, the crowd’s going crazy. 0-2 to quentin, and jones floats a pitch over the plate and quentin singles to right. then falls behind 2-0 to dye and dye hits one out to right. jenks comes in and mows em down and the sox with 6-5.

whalefeet says:

July 25th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

the twins got beat tonight by a great pitcher, he’s been a great pitcher all year. other than the first inning, livan pitched great and kept the twins in the game. rafael perez is a pretty nasty lefty, and red’s hit was 2 inches away from being a game tying single. it’s unfortunate, but let’s not write this team off just yet.

Mudcat says:

July 25th, 2008 at 9:18 pm

Yep, whale. A couple of .290 hitters up, but just couldn’t get the job done. I don’t know what else we could do.

Daniel1966 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 9:18 pm

T., The Twins made the Indians sweat? OOOOOH, that’s quite an accomplishment. And whalefeet, Livan pitched great? What the hell are you smoking?

gatty790 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

I would like to see the Twins keep Delmon in the 5 spot for the rest of the year. He seems to be the only one capable of hitting in the fifth spot right now. Denard had another good game in the lead off spot. Unfortunately I think the Twins might lose 2 of three from the Indians and 3 of 4 from the White Sox which would kill this season.

bringbackjohnmoses says:

July 25th, 2008 at 9:27 pm

O - 11 since back from D.L.

Let’s play the hot bat!!!

again…forfeit in the late innings…too painful watching the Red Wings try and compete with MLB players

Put Harris at short for good…busher at third and send the grit to the Peoria single A team on youtube.

BTW…the was a two hop bouncer to 2nd. I thought we were going to see a slide into first from half way down the line.

Anyone read section 220…this is exactly the game he wrote about….no one to pose a threat in teh late innings in crucial situations.

Our MLB guys do their jobs and you see no panic in the visitors dugout because they see the guys coming up…who of course won’t get pinch hit for.

game over…

not to worry bill smith - were fine, we dont need any help…the only difference between us and other teams, is that they hit homeruns, and we hit singles and occasionally a double–so just sit back in your big fat ass chair and do nothing again and we will be content to lose…oh by the way, did ya notice what the yanks just pulled off with prospects….too bad one of the best teams in america and the most fun teams has to have such second rate management….its sickening and its sickening to watch everyone just go by us in every way…our lack of effort on the mgmt level is just a low point for minnesota sports and it sucks…

Just got in. Reading the posts is fun.

Update on latest blog initiative which Gardy followed: Put Span lead-off and the offense will flourish. Good concept. Record 0-3 The team has scored 7 runs in 3 games while Span has been great 5 for 11.

Interesting 2.33 runs per game. Previous 16 games (since July 1) 96 runs 6 runs per game (AND that includes 2 0-1 losses).

I think I am going to go scan the a.m radio dial to listen for the next 7 Twins radio ads that aren’t funny whatsover.

Ads aren’t funny…late innings are

I think we may need a LNP bobble head night to sell out against KC.

Go Twinkies

Daniel1966 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 9:48 pm

Mr Dragon, Welcome back! Careful!! Tonight might prove to be a landmine. Do not say anything negative (or more so), the Twins management and their ProTector’s might castigate you. So that you know what you missed: Livan pitched great; Span is an idiot; we played poorly in the outfield despite losing a player; The mighty Indians and their vaunted bullpen were sweating at the end while our vaunted offense couldn’t get the tying run home from second with no outs in the bottom of the ninth. Gardy and his coaches were again magnificent! ‘Nuf said.

thrylos98 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 10:00 pm

what’s done is done. Tomorrow is another day. Biggest thing about tonight: I hope Gomez is ok.

that said, can anyone in this planet justify Gardy’s management of the game tonight?

From having Boof up and down since the second inning (and probably wasting him for the next couple of days, which means that ‘Bassy’ will be up soon) to those weird Redmond for Lamb substitutions….

If someone needs to go from this team it ain’t Livan… It’s Gardy

the Dragon says:

July 25th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Daniel,

I actually got in during the 6th inning.

Livan got off to a bad start, not unexpected, YET pitched a complete game (bullpen not wasted). Basically pitched to his ERA, and the team had a chance to win.

Lee is a decent pitcher and pitched well. I hate to note that some of the Indians are also professional baseball players.

I think T had a good point, for ALL the sackcloth and ashes here, IF ANY of other starters had started out similar, NO/little crying would have occured, and if “GOD” had been pitching and threw such an effort, the comments would be how this game was the exception that proved him a HOF pitcher and in future the annual pitching award would be re-named the Francisco Liriano Award (i mean Cy Young is so passe).

Its funny, I’m still alive, Guinness is just as good, the sun is likely to come up tomorrow.

I’m still a bit confused about how a 4-5 loss is BAD, while a 0-1 Loss is GOOD. I’m personally not partial to either, AND life is good.

bert actually said at the end of the gam, “great twins comeback”, thats something I tell my little leage team. this team and management don’t know how to win. just hang untill the new joint is built

Daniel1966 says:

July 25th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

Mr. Dragon, Fortunately, you weren’t playing defense for the Twins during Livan’s outstanding outing. The first four innings were frightening and frightful, until the Indians seemed to get bored and revert to their mediocre selves. Stats aside, Livan, at least on the road, is both scary and pathetic. I only hope that Gomez is OK. The shots hit off of Livan could have been the backdrop to the conclusion of the 1812 Overture!

Me Too says:

July 25th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Dang, not really the type of game that I was expecting from Livan, although, I must give him credit for staying in the game and preserving the bullpen for this stretch of games coming up.
Five runs in the first 2 innings, and then settled down. The first inning probably would have ended differently too, if not for the injury. I personally think that Gomez would have had that ball that Span dropped. Not only that, but no way that the first run scores on that ball that Gomez caught sans the injury. Overall, limiting the damage was all that Livan could do, and he at least did that much. Not one of his normal games though, he didn’t get blown out, and he didn’t pitch lights out.

Ben W. says:

July 25th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

If Gomez is DLed, the Twins should call up Randy Ruiz. He can’t play any positions, but between Kubel and Monroe they should have RF covered and Ruiz can DH.

Me Too says:

July 25th, 2008 at 10:36 pm

Stupid question, but does anyone know if Lamb is capable of bunting? I know that he came from the NL, so it stands to reason that he may have been called to bunt on occasion. If he is capable, why wouldn’t Gardy have left him in to bunt in that spot?
Get your runner over to third with one out, and you have a very, very good chance to score him.
Sure, I know that RedDog hit it to the right spot of the infield and all that, but what good is it if it isn’t on the ground? Keep Redmond alive to hit for Punto if it comes to that. Dumb, Dumb, Dumb.

Evets says:

July 25th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Please no more posts about Livan doing a great job saving our bullpen. If this is what you are hanging our hat on, stop it. All the people still effusively praising Levon are making fools of themselves. HE CAN’T PITCH AT THE MAJOR LEAGUE LEVEL. If you think he can you just don’t understand baseball. When your team is down 5-0 in the first couple of innings….Ugh, you people are insane. I’ve admitted plenty of mistakes, I thouught Boof was going to be a top tier pitcher. I bet a freind that he would throw a no-hitter this year. I was wrong, Boof is not very good. Livan is not even close to being a capable pitcher, not even close. If you don’t trust stats, trust your eyes, check the twins infirmary were wounded outfielders lay, admit that your wrong!

Evets says:

July 25th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

Alexander Soto, Elizabethton C.
Current stats:

61 AB; .377 BA; 9 HR; 21 RBI; .934 SLG; 1.376 OPS

That would project to 72 HR, 168 RBI over 488 AB.

Small sample size, but very nice projection.

the Dragon says:

Evets,

You are obviously correct. I was so sure NO other team in baseball would have such trash pitching at the major league level, I looked over the box scores starting Friday a week ago.

I’m amazed how many stupid baseball clubs there are.

Burress, Baltimore
Cabrerra, Baltimore
Balckburn, Twins
Wells, Colorado
Danks, ChiSox
Robertson, Detriot
Wellemeyer, St. Louis
Grienke, KC
Laffey, Cleveland
Kuroda, LA Dodgers
Hernandez, Twins

ALL gave up atleast 5 runs in the 1st 2 innings.

Think how much $$$ the Dodgers paid for the bum Kuroda.

Evets,

I will gladly claim I am wrong, WHEN you show me the rule change which selects play-off or World Series teams by ERA, WHIP, whisper from the Tooth Fairy or any other criteria which does not includes wins or losses.

Until that time, I will resist being happy about a 0-1 loss or condemn a 9-8 win.

I may be old, but wins are still the criteria to make the playoffs. Over the course of any year each team will probably win 10 games they should have lost, and lose 10 games they should have won.

sane says:

July 26th, 2008 at 11:04 am

When winning despite deficiencies prevents you from correcting those deficiencies, winning is deadly.

Football points that out more clearly than does baseball.
The football team that wins the first game makes no changes (corrections) because “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”
The football team that loses the first game knows that they have to make corrections (adjustments) and they improve themselves.
Thats why the losing football team often wins the rematch when it “really” counts.
Winning may be “the goal” but winning GAMES the wrong way can sabotage a teams chance for winning a CHAMPIONSHIP.
