Gomez to miss rest of Cleveland series

Posted on July 26th, 2008 – 3:10 PM
By Joe Christensen

CLEVELAND — Carlos Gomez said he’s feeling better today but doesn’t expect to play for the rest of this series against Cleveland.

Gomez has a bruised tailbone and lower back.

“I feel better. I can walk,” he said, smiling.

Denard Span said he was a little sore but feels good enough to play.

By now, you’ve heard the Indians traded Casey Blake to the Dodgers for two minor-league prospects.

Update (5:20 p.m.): The Twins could use some good news, and they got it today with word that Michael Cuddyer’s left hand is feeling better. Gardy said Cuddyer will be re-evaluated when the Twins return home on Monday and might start swinging a bat again with an eye toward a minor-league rehab stint.

Matt Tolbert (torn ligament left thumb) has stopped swinging the bat in his rehab but will try to resume again Monday. The Twins were hopeful he’d be playing by Aug. 1, but these things can be unpredictable.

Twins (55-47)

1. Denard Span, CF

2. Alexi Casilla, 2B

3. Joe Mauer, C

4. Justin Morneau, 1B

5. Jason Kubel, RF

6. Delmon Young, LF

7. Mike Lamb, DH

8. Brian Buscher, 3B

9. Nick Punto, SS

Starting pitcher: RH Scott Baker

Indians (45-56)

1. Grady Sizemore, CF

2. David Dellucci, DH

3. Shin-Soo Choo, LF

4. Jhonny Peralta, SS

5. Kelly Shoppach, C

6. Ryan Garko, 1B

7. Andy Marte, 3B

8. Franklin Gutierrez, RF

9. Asdrubal Cabrera, 2B

Starting pitcher: RH Fausto Carmona

Progressive Field. First pitch: 6:05 p.m.

Well there goes blake… wake up bill and get beltre

Bombo Rivera says:

July 26th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

Mike Lamb at DH….UGHHH!! This is NOT good. Beltre better be on his way to Minneapolis for the Chicago series or it’s over!

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 26th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

the Twins won’t make a trade

Tyler says:

July 26th, 2008 at 3:28 pm

Joe

if you were a betting man, what would you bet that the Twins would get Beltre?

Bill Brasky says:

July 26th, 2008 at 3:44 pm

More Punto!!!!!!

GoGo will be out for 7-10 days minimum. These players are soft nowadays and don’t play the slightest bit hurt.

Gregor says:

July 26th, 2008 at 3:54 pm

With Stewart ready to play in Colorado, it would be nice if the Twins did a Fuente/Atkins deal, which will probably not happen.

Mudcat says:

July 26th, 2008 at 4:05 pm

OK, we missed out on Casey Blake and the Pirate’s Xavier Nady. He’s batting .340 with 14 homers. That’s better than Blake and a lot better than Beltre. The Yanks got him for low prospects. That was a missed opportunity. Pirate and Twin players are interchangeable.

E-Rack says:

July 26th, 2008 at 4:07 pm

Bill Smith continues to sit on his fat ass and do nothing.

Ron Gardenhire continues to sit on his fat ass and play the wrong players.

TWINS BASEBALL BABY!

ackack says:

July 26th, 2008 at 4:14 pm

But we have Lamb, Everett and Monroe! (sarcasm) What more can we want? It does seem that we have not learned anything from our past inactivity. It is frustrating.

sploorp says:

July 26th, 2008 at 4:24 pm

I’m wondering if Gardy and Smith are planning to patch everything up from with in. Gomez back to center when he’s back. Span stays in right. Cuddy moves back to third base if and/or when he comes back. One of the starters moves to the bullpen for the rest of this season to make room for Liriano. I can’t say those moves would really be any better or worse than trading prospects for a third baseman or bullpen help. But it sure would have been nice to add Beltre.

Ben says:

July 26th, 2008 at 4:31 pm

I wonder if the Twins have looked into LaTroy Hawkins at all. I see where the Yankees designated him for assignment today. I think getting out of NY would be a good change of scenery for him. He could help the bullpen.

Travis Aune says:

July 26th, 2008 at 4:32 pm

The Yankees designated Latroy Hawkins for assignment wouldnt that be worth considering to see if he can find himself back where he had his most success. I think it would be a low risk high reward of signing

mickey mental says:

July 26th, 2008 at 4:39 pm

i think smith would have to clear it with this blog before picking up latroy.

the Dragon says:

July 26th, 2008 at 4:44 pm

I’ve got the PERFECT trade to solve ALL the complaints of this blog.

From Seattle: Beltre & Putz

For: Baker, Blackburn, Young & Gomez

Send: Slowey & Perkins as compensation for Seattle taking Livan, Lamb, Punto, Harris & Everett.

We get Beltre, Bullpen help AND Liriano becomes the rotation.

World Series, here we come…

Regards,

the Dragon says:

July 26th, 2008 at 4:56 pm

Oops. We’ll have to throw in Revere, Mulvey & Manship so they’ll take Monroe & Bass.

the Dragon says:

July 26th, 2008 at 4:57 pm

And Valencia & Hughes to go with Bonser…

Shawn in Binghamton says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:02 pm

there comes a point where it isn’t funny anymore

wf says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:03 pm

Just saw J. Masterson — one of the Red Sox players dangled in front of the Twins. Most unimpressive, getting shelled by the Yanks today in a relief role. Don’t think I saw one of his pitches even hit 90 on the gun.

Front office could probably sniff this, while talking trade with the Sox.

tomjh says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:07 pm

There’s a reason that Bill Smith is a professional baseball executive and no one here is. Just because the Twins have lost 5 in a row, and it happens to be a week before the trade deadline, we have to overthrow our whole lineup to keep contending. We’re only 3.5 games out, with 60 to play. Try not to panic.

tomjh says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:08 pm

Also, I realize that the above “super trades” are facetious. I don’t think that the Twins need to make ANY move, except maybe for a right-handed middle reliever (Padres?).

Nico says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:38 pm

come on everyone, when cuddyer comes back in mid august, it’ll be just like making a trade!!

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

mj1 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:39 pm

tomjh …its going to be 10.5 out soon if something doesnt change…have you seen the schedule…twins play 24 of 30 on the road soon….that doesnt look good if the team is in this funk…this team cant win without help…thats a given…so its time to make a move or prepare to drop out of this race….its not brain surgery…..

Nico says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:41 pm

Twins don’t need bullpen help nearly as bad as they need a right handed, power hitting third baseman to protect Morneau, and a offensive shortstop like JJ Hardy or Freddy Sanchez.

mj1 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:41 pm

dragon…i will bet theres more excitement and hope for the vikings to go to the superbowl than there is for the twins to win the series, and if in the course of the season someone is injured or the vikings are in need of some repair, i promise you wilf will not sit on his fat as like this bill smith guy…so in answer to your question none yet, but very much in the process of getting there, and wilf hasnt been here long…ive been watching the twins do this shit for a long, long period of time….see ya

Jeremy says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:43 pm

The Twins should go out and get Hank Blalock from the Rangers. Blalock is an all-star caliber third baseman when he’s healthy and now that he’s finally playing games again maybe his bat will heat up as well. Another plus about Blalock would be i don’t believe we would have to give up as much to get him as we would compared to getting Beltre from Seattle. The Twins need to at least shake things up a little bit to get it more exciting around here. Im tired of just staying competitive enough to make us watch them till the end of the season when they just loose and let us all down. They need to at least try to pretend their trying to get to the playoffs this year. Please Bill, help us out!!!

Nico says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:50 pm

have you ever looked at Blalock’s splits ???

he is absolutely awful away from Arlington.

MNaggie says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:51 pm

Twins need someone who can hit left handed pitching. Blalock is absolutely terrible against lefties, Beltre is not.

Jeremy says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:53 pm

True, but at this point I’m hoping we just try to get somebody that’s decent

mj1 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:54 pm

i wonder if bill s knows chicago is coming to town shortly for a few games that are probably going to make or break this season….somebody roll his fat ass off the couch and clue him in …. it gets old, just having your face slapped in year after year… i would have thought maybe they learned something when they sold castilla so soon….give the fans something to cheer about or that dome can become an empty cavern pretty quickly and i wouldnt blame the twin cities one bit if those crowds drop to 6-7k…stop stuffin your fat cheeks and get to work bill…theres a pennant race going on…

danimals says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:55 pm

2nd place in the AL Central (considered by a lot of people preseason as the toughest in baseball).

youngest team in baseball.

fans writing them off every time they get out of a tough series (Detroit, CWS, Boston, LAA, NY). i personally wrote them off the trouncing in Chicago earlier.

multiple hand injuries.

all in all, they’re doing fabulous. i dont even mind no trade. i dont smell a pennant. if the right deal come by … i’d welcome it. but we dont know what’s going on behind the scenes. maybe other teams are tired of getting robbed by the twins???

tomjh says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:58 pm

I know the Twins play a lot of games on the road coming up, but look who it’s against. In the next month, we have Cleveland 5 more times (last place), Seattle 6 times (last place), and KC 3 times (4th place). The rest of the schedule is tougher (CWS, OAK, LAA), but that’s 14 games in a month against pretty pitiful teams. I think we’ll hold up all right, provided we play well against Chicago. How we play vs. Chicago is what will determine our season, and we only have them at home for the rest of the year.

mj1 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 5:59 pm

danimals, what planet are you on…oh i get it- you live with bill s…that shit sounds like something that would come out of his mouth and just who the hell have the twins robbed…i must have been out of the country…..oh yea 3-4th place, thats just fine…were young….please give me a break…thats just total loser talk….

tomjh says:

July 26th, 2008 at 6:00 pm

Also, 16 of their next 30 are at home.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 6:04 pm

Did anybody actually think Cleveland would deal Blake to the Twins?

Why give you division rival an upgrade? And if you’re the Twins, why do anything to help your rival long term?

Wouldn’t it be FUN to watch the Twins deal two prospects to the Indians so that in two years they’re kicking our butt all over the place?

i wonder if bill s knows chicago is coming to town shortly for a few games that are probably going to make or break this season

Nope he’s not. In fact, he’s gone home for the rest of the season and doesn’t care what happens.

After all, it’s not like its his job or anything.

Gotta love the bandwagoners. At the beginning of the season Bill Smith was destroying this team and it was the end of the world.

But now this team is a lock for the postseason…and magically just one bat away.

Which is hilarious since judging by the comments around here there isn’t a single thing going right. (The manager’s a moron, the hitting coach is poison, the bullpen is crap, the rotation is shakey…and everybody Morneau sucks and can never do anything right)

Meanwhile? They just don’t have the resources to patch the major holes all at once. They can’t patch the lineup without putting a hole in the rotation. And if even if they bring in Liriano to do that there’s still that Livan fellow that’s a guaranteed loss 50% of the time.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

oh i get it- you live with bill s…

In the absence of a legitimate response, it is always preferable to resort to ad hominem respones.

Good to see the boards still able to function at full speed even while in panic mode.

mj1 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 6:05 pm

tomjh ..please check around and you may find that were going to have to beat more than just chicago to win anything… and cleveland only 5 times…have you been watching , were having trouble beating them and i wouldnt give you much for the rest of this series, and i really hate to say that, but thats how i feel right now…this team is down deep and needs help….im still waiting for danimals to tell me who the hell we robbed.lol

Mudcat says:

July 26th, 2008 at 6:08 pm

Stewart for Kielty seems to have favored the Twins.

As did that whole AJ deal. There was also the deal for Castillo (what ever happened to that Bowyer fellow?)

mj1 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Well it’s Saturday night, that does seem to be “pile on the runs” night…
Tomorrow, of course, they’ll get one and lose…

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 6:27 pm

So there we go. 6 runs in the inning, and Lamb and Punto make the 2nd/3rd outs.

It’s win/win around here.

mj1 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 6:29 pm

its amazing what a 3 run homer will do for you…we just dont get enough of them…that problem and some help in the bullpen and liriano back in the rotation and this team would win this division hands down….

OK, then, Sudden Sam Cooke, another ball player.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:25 pm

If hte Brewers can make some moves why can’t we?

I love how you make it sound like its so easy to deal.

Each team has its own needs and has its own list of what it’s willing to give up.

Those things need to match up in order for a trade to go down.

Unless you suggesting that the Twins should’ve been easily able to pick up Sabathia.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:28 pm

Obviously the Rangers wanted Hamilton…but do you think even THEY had any clue it would turn out like it has?

Mudcat says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

DETROIT SUCKS.
Yep, I said it. Verlander lets AJ and Quentin on and Jermain Dye drives one in again to take the lead. Verlander gives way to the Tigers bullpen who can’t hold anybody anyway.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:32 pm

If Baker is on a team other than the Twins (and possibly had a better W/L record), do you think he’d be a Cy Young candidate at this point?

Mud,
I will accept that unless you want to go back a bit further for Sad Sam Cooke.

Mudcat says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

Jim Thome=no wussie.

Drove in another run for Sox.

He shoulda been a Twin. He was available and likes Minnesota and is a good clubhouse guy.

Good for 50 dingers too.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:35 pm

With this whole Beltre thing…it’s good to see the Twins apparently still trying to make it work, but if it falls through I’d rather they not go out and “settle” for something else that wouldn’t be as good a fit.

That’s when you get in to trade for trade’s sake territory.

Bill Brasky says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

I’m not saying we should’ve got Sabathia - we don’t need him - and he hates us. My point is that the small market Brewers are giving up prospects and taking a large salaries to give them a chance to win. We continue to sit on our hands year after year. We are what…$15 million under last year’s payroll?? We keep hearing how great our farm system yet we’re afraid to give up anything. If we have such a great farm system, it should be easy to re-stock talent and losing players shouldn’t be a big deal. At least the Brewers front office has some kahones.

Ben says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:38 pm

Gardy needs to sit Mauer right now and then start him tomorrow.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:40 pm

It’s gonna be hard for Buscher to set an RBI record if he’s leading off…

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:41 pm

Hmm, that didn’t look like a homerun swing on Buscher’s dinger.

Mudcat says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:44 pm

Indians look off a little. Maybe starting to pack it in because they are seeing top players traded.

Ben says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Yeah, because Blake classifies as one of their top players.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:46 pm

Strike zone appears to be growing as the game goes on.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:48 pm

Castillo wasn’t exactly a top player and it supposedly set everybody off…

Daniel1966 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Listening to Tom Hamilton, the voice of the Indians and a pro, just told Nick Punto to shut up and go back to the bench after his strikeout. His rationale was that if he thinks the strike zone in a 9-0 game is going to shrink, he’s delusional. Fun to listen to a great BB announcer.

Mudcat says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:50 pm

Blake was .290 with eleven homers. Good as anybody we have.

Nora says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:51 pm

Good point, T. I remember the anger from fans and player last year when the vaunted Castillo was traded. LOL

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

With Dick bringing up last night’s chaos in CF, I wonder if that’s why Gardy’s reluctant to have all four OFs in the lineup tonight.

We almost lost both Gomez AND Span in one half inning. You’d hate to see a similiar play eat another OF and leave Gardy without the DH for a gam.e

Joe says:

The problem with the Twins is they don’t have those prospects for trading…. They either have high rated prospects that they don’t want to trade (Revere, Hunt, Guerra, Robertson) or they have ones with very little value (whole AA and AAA club)….

They don’t have that prospect that will make a trade easy, they have top caliber prospects in the low ranks and not much in the high ranks. they don’t want to trade one of there starters, while the AAA starters haven’t done much of anything…..

I’d put 4 outfielders in the game if Kevin Slowey was pitching…

Ben says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:56 pm

Mudcat, well one of their top players and as good as anybody that we have at third base is completely different.

Ben says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

T, if that were to happen, why wouldn’t you just move Punto to an OF spot and then bring in Harris?

tomjh says:

July 26th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

I know he’s old, but you’d think Randy Ruiz could fetch something… but then again, he can’t play defense.

Mudcat says:

July 26th, 2008 at 8:03 pm

Old and can’t play defense. Sounds like all of our trade bait.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 8:04 pm

Ah. That would work for a day.

Living in AZ and having watched John Meloan pitch for the U of A in the college world series, don’t be surprised to see him pitching for the Tribe as a closer next year or the year after. And, don’t be surprised to see Casey Blake playing for the Indians next year ala Rick Aguilera.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 8:08 pm

C’mon Baker. You got 9 runs there. Don’t be so nervous.

gatty790 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 8:09 pm

Is it me or does scott baker pitch better when he is down by a run or tied then he does with a big lead?

gatty790 says:

Let’s see if Bass can give up less than 5 runs this inning…

T says:

The radar gun has Bass throwing 94 mph fastballs (at least at Progressive Field). What do you expect from an Insurance magnate named Lewis, who funds moveon.org. You gotta love it.

Sox won, won’t gain any ground but won’t lose any either. Would have been nice if Tigers would cooperate and win a few against them.

Daniel1966 says:

Baker goes 5, gives up 3 runs and uses the bullpen to garner a victory and end the losing streak. Too bad he didn’t pitch a great game like Hernandez did last night. Pitiful performance, Scott!

Bill Brasky says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:19 pm

I just keep laughing every time I see Punto come to the plate. He would be an average player on my town ball team :)

Nora says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:21 pm

Brasky, if that were true Punto would not have made it to the majors. LOL

Bill Brasky says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

Does anyone know if Livan’s right arm is still attached to his body? Did it need to be amputated today since he threw over 100 pithces last night? I thought pitchers spontaneously combusted at that point. Someone should tell Gardenhire that.

Bill Brasky says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:22 pm

That’s my point. Punto doesn’t belong in the majors. LOL

Bill Brasky says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Punto would not make another MLB roster. Not even the Royals or the Mariners.

Nora says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:24 pm

Give it a rest Brasky.

Bill Brasky says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

OK Mrs. Punto. Sorry.

Daniel1966 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

Hey Brasky, What’s the name of your home town ball team? Shaker Heights? Of course, everybody on that team is tougher and more talented than a “drama queen” named Carlos Gomez. Right?

gatty790 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:26 pm

I think Livan might as well have pitched with his left arm for a while in the first inning yesterday…

Nora says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:28 pm

So just because I didn’t agree with me I must be related to Punto? LOL

Nora says:

The New and Improved Craig says:

Denard Span’s walk got it all started in the big inning. Good job, Denard.

My man Buscher gets better the more he plays. Way better hitter than Beltre.

The New and Improved Craig says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:42 pm

Morneau, Casilla, Buscher, Punto

Very good infield. Four good players.

gatty790 says:

July 26th, 2008 at 9:49 pm

Span OBP - .432
Casilla OBP - .355
Mauer OBP - .416
Morneau OBP - .388

Enough said.

Rocky Simon says:

July 26th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

How bout my man Buscher the Butcher….
And I’m talking about his offense but his defense. Great catch and throw in the 6th to his right on a ball with spin and good range to his left late in the game.
I’ll I am saying is give him a chance.
Play Buscher and he will continue to improve.
Oh, he can hit left handers if they give him a decent chance.
Anyway, good game Buscher and Twins.
Do we still need to look at trading one of young guns on the mound and more for
Beltre or Blalock. Blalock does not hit well on the road. Buscher must love Cleveland. First career hit, first career HR and now 5 RBI’s.

Tyler says:

July 26th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

“My man Buscher gets better the more he plays. Way better hitter than Beltre.”

HAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA, that is just too funny. Too idiotic and obvious to waste time disputing that statement.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

OK Mrs. Punto. Sorry.

Hey Bill, buddy. The goal when trying to burn somebody is to come up with something original.

T says:

July 26th, 2008 at 10:28 pm

While the Twins could still benefit from having Beltre in the lineup, Buscher demonstrated today that he could be replace Lamb on the bench.

Everett’s “spot” on the roster has been shakey for a while, I think night’s like tonight pretty much finish him off.

If they can bring in Beltre this season, Lambykins will likely be shipped to ANYBODY who just wants to throw a body at the Twins.

OF: Young/Span/Kubel (depending on Cuddy/Gomez health)
IF: Beltre/Harris/Casilla/Morneau
C: Mauer
DH: Monroe
Bench: Redmond/Buscher/Punto/…I’m forgetting somebody

But now they’ve got Span as the confounding variable.

So with injuries you’ve got Cuddyer, Gomez, Tolbert, and Everett…and like one spot for all of them.

I’m guessing you could pull an Ortiz type trade with Punto and Lamb…but it’d be tough.

I know everybody hates Punto…but Everett’s no better. And Tolbert has been out for a WHILE. Long enough that I don’t think being on the Twins bench is going to do anything to help him get his swing back.

Evertt can just vanish. So Punto stays PLAYS OFF THE BENCH and that’s that.

His bat got hot, it’s not anymore.

The Twins now have the 2nd best team batting average in MLB at .279, one point below the Rangers at .280.
