Posted on July 27th, 2008 – 9:25 AMBy Joe Christensen

Kubel, Monroe, Harris. Very weak trio against LHP.
More important, let’s hope Blackburn gets into a ryhthm and finds that consistency he had for a long while.
Any works on any possable trades???
Well, anyone going to listen to Bill Smith on his interview with Twins Radio? Here in South Dakota, I don’t have that privledge, and would like to find out what he said about the status of Liriano.
It truly is too bad that Kubel has to be in there versus a lefty. Monroe should be in Rf and Dh Mauer.
I just don’t get it. I understand that Mauer needs his rest, but why can’t he dh some of the time. He didn’t start in wednesday’s getaway game at Yankee Stadium, had thursday off, plays 2 days then gets another day off. Gardy is really protecting him from another injury, but when he is out of the lineup, the chemistry and production decrease. On the other hand Gardy kept on sending out go-go when it was apparent that he had no clue as to the strike zone or that a leadoff hitter should be a little patient. Gardy didn’t want to hurt his feelings? Just doesn’t make sense.
Anyways, Liriano is probably starting his last game for the REd Wings tonite. I have seen his last 2 starts and he has been lites out. HOWEVER, IT SHOULD BE NOTED that he has given up the Twins suggestion in spring training to go more overhand and has reverted to his 3/4 motion. He has been great and his delivery is not as violent as before, BUT i am still concerned.
WE LOVE THE TWINS IN ROCHESTER
What? GArdy couldn’t figure out how to get Lamb in the lineup?
this is the lineup we should be sending out everyday…take note bill smith…throw the cheez-whiz away, get out of the easy chair and put your fat ass to work. get something done and stop playing fantasy baseball with this team…and do something to win this division…..its very possible to do
span cf
casilla 2b’
mauer c
morneau 1b
BELTRE 3b
kubel rf
young lf
buscher dh
harris ss
this lineup is pretty solid, and with some good starting pitching and and effective bullpen could win many games yet and maybe be serious contender in oct…..
To The StarTrib,
How come you allow people to call others names and the flat out name calling that is going on toward Bill Smith. This should not be allowed……People that do this need to get a life and go do something productive.
Your living in candyland if you think that we are going to trade for Beltre.
The lineup makes me shudder. Mauer sits way too often, and why sit Buscher? Five RBIs last night wasn’t enough?
gardy just doesnt like buscher against left handers…not sure how i feel about that, but harris isnt too bad…still wish they could plug beltre in there full time and let buscher dh and play kubel full time
We should at the very least DFA Mike Lamb and call up Matt Macri. He would give us a capable RH bat against LH pitching at 3rd. I hope Monroe gets hot for a while because we need some production at DH against LH pitching.
ENOUGH ABOUT BELTRE ALREADY!!!
I’d like to see what this team could do if it lost Lamb, gained Macre, and lost either Livan/Bonser/Bass and gained Liriano. Ahhh wishful thinking…
Unless they trade away Lamb’s salary, and also give up 1-2 young arms, the Twins will not get Beltre.
If you were Seattle would you want Lamb…or if you were the Twins would you give up a Perkins and/or Slowey for a 3rd baseman that is almost 30 and expensive?
A lot of people think it would be great for us to trade Livan, Lamb, Everett or maybe Cuddyer. No one wants them and wouldn’t give up someone of Beltre’s caliber. Cuddy maybe before he got hurt…but Gardy and the front office like him and have put him out front as the face and spokesman of the Twins. He’s not going anywhere…
We’re stuck again - with the 1-2 usual players short of being a good playoff team.
Bummer -
Well, anyone going to listen to Bill Smith on his interview with Twins Radio? Here in South Dakota, I don’t have that privledge, and would like to find out what he said about the status of Liriano.
You actually do have access…it’s streamed at am1500.com (kstp website)
It’s nice to just say “here’s a good lineup, Beltre should bat fifth”, but what about actually considering what you’d have to trade to get him?
the twins should trade bass, lamb and monroe for mike schmidt.
just take a close look at the other trades that have gone down and what teams have had to give up to complete trades….yankees, dodgers, for instance - that should bring the price for beltre down a bit i would think…
I didn’t see the last two games but on the radio Dan Gladden mentioned that Mauer was running gingerly.
I’m also not sold on bringing Liriano up right away unless there is an obvious need in the starting line up. He has great talent, but needs to mature big time.
The organization sent some strong messages to Casilla and Span in the past year by sending them down. It made them better players in the majors now. Liriano is perhaps an even bigger challenge than those two - poor work ethic, stubborn, etc.
I say to delay bringing him as long as possible and potentially send send him back down again if you need to. He might be nothing more than a one year wonder (a.k.a Mark Fidrich) Otherwise trade him while you can for the missing power bat we need.
mj1, any thoughts on trades you think the twins should make?
mickey, its obvious what the twins need, they just need the f.o. to make the attempts to fill those holes….gardy knows what they are, as he has stated many times, the fans know, now lets just see what mr smith says and does…..i will not hold my breath on mr smith doing anything…have lost confidence in him…as he is speaking on the radio right now…and saying nothing
The Twins will not trade for help this year. They are too afraid of not having enough players next year (but, given they don’t have enough this year, I’m not sure where these new players will come from next year - aka, they are just doing what they always do).
As for fear, I’m afraid they’ll bring Everrett back up in a few days, and send an actual player down to the minors. Everrett (sp?) does nothing for them this year at all. There is no reason for him to be on the team. None.
Everett will get his out right when he comes back healthy in the next few days.
Heh, why does anyone bother calling into the Bill Smith show? He doesn’t say anything of meaning at all. That isn’t surprising, but I’m not sure why anyone calls that show.
He just said Monroe supplies some thunder, but his average hasn’t been what they’d hoped against lefties….so I guess he said something there.
bill smith is as boring as he is slow to make any moves…what a waste of time on the radio. couldnt agree with mike any more –
seems like bill smith was more concerned with the big crowds that are possible than anything….such a shame
I’m not going to slam him for not trading for this year, not completely. I’m not sure they are as close this year as they were earlier in the decade when they also did nothing.
This is his first year. It is too early for me to judge him (of course, I judged Childress after a couple of games….). If they continue to only worry about next year, again next year, and the year after, then we’ll know he is just Terry Ryan in another body. Was it Hunter or Santana who said this team only worries about next year, but next year never comes….
ya know with the biggest series of the year on the horizon, just a day away and a team that has faltered some lately, what a way to fire up a crowd and the home team, by announcing a couple of moves including liriano coming up and adding some strength to the lineup –that would be such wonderful way to start off the series…..they have had alot of time to work on this and i guess we will see by tonite if they care at all about anything but crowd size….
In order to fill our holes, we could give up OUR comparable minor leaguer to 19-yr-old ex-Yankee prospect Jose Tabata who was traded to the Pirates.
And that would be…………………………………never mind!
That would be Carlos Gomez sane he would be comparable
Burning Bush,
That’s a good call!
Now who wants to trade Carlos Gomez plus three prospects for Nady and Marte?
Sounds like a bad trade to me but what do I know. Everyone here think that Tobata is just some scrub that would sniff the majors or something. He is a 5 tool kid that has been playing pro ball for like 2 years already and i think he might be the best field player in the Yankees system right now.
I mean was there top field prospect.
beltre is not all that great…why does everyone want him so bad?
Mauer is obviously resting after a night game, and because he’ll probably be in 6 straight night games this week, 4 against the sox. all catchers rest, look at shoppach.
People think that Mauer should be behind the plate every inning every game that is just unrealistic. He catches as many or more that just about ever catcher in the league but that not good enough for these fans. I also agree with you about Beltre.
Burning Bush,
I would say that you know enough to recognize a bad trade when you see one.
If the Pirates hit the jackpot with Tabata, then Nady and Marte will become the answers to a trivia question.
is it best for chicago to sweep det and send them 8.5 back or det win and twins win and keep our gap at 3.5 going into tomorrow
mj1,
IMO the White Sox are the bigger threat, regardless of what JoeC and the Tiger-lovers write.
i think it’s good detroit lost a couple, both to get them another game behind the twins and to hurt their spirit for winning the division. but a win against the sox today paired with a twins win would be greatly appreciated.
once again…
beltre - .260 avg, .765 ops, 51 r, 16 hr, 47 rbi. (also has .679 ops on turf this year in 8 games)
KUBEL - .263 avg, .782 ops, 49 r, 13 hr, 50 rbi.
i think its best maybe chi win as much as i hate to say that, but id like to see this a 2 team race….
I look ahead and would like the Sox to lose. i really don’t think that the Tigers a a real threat anymore too far back too little season left and two teams to pass. It is asking a lot for a team that doesn’t pitch real well.
tigers do not play well in the division, plus with their lack of pitching depth, they don’t have a chance. but i think being 2.5 games out of first looks good with a big 4 game series coming up.
1-16 since back from the DL and another start…what the heck..this is a crock
Busher is on fire…who cares about the percentages.
travesty
and of course the media won’t say boo
The speed gun on mlb.com has Blackburn throwing 95-97. Is this just another “juiced up” stadium like Comerica in DET?

1. Kubel can’t hit lefties
2. Show me the year Kubel has done this before (I can show you Beltre’s…
http://www.baseball-reference.com/b/beltrad01.shtml
3. Beltre would not replace Kubel
4. Next year is Beltre’s contract year
5. Twins are willing to take on the salary
There is a goofy strike zone today lets see if it stays consistent.
http://www.baseballprospectus.com/pecota/beltrad01.php
7-year forecast from baseball prospectus.
1 - i never said kubel could, i just posted beltre’s stats in comparison with kubel to remind everyone what we’d be trading for.
2 - kubel’s always had potential, but has been hurt. he had a great 2nd half last year when he was healthy, and is putting it together this year.
3 - i never said he was.
4 - looking for beltre to repeat his last contract year performance is probably not a good idea. his stats were so inflated that it’s obvious he had a little “help”.
5 - yes, but the players they would need to part with to get him would be too much. you’re talking one of our 4 young starters, PLUS minor leaguers. that’s just not a good idea for a rebuilding team. if they could get him for a couple minor league pitchers, i’d be all for it, but that’s not gonna happen.
More Punto!!! keep marching him out there Gardy.
BTW, do you think we’ll see the Brewers do their pre-game and psot-game stuff from the Mall of America?
Why do we have our crew in the Sconny Dells?
nice pitch blackburn.
the twins have been hitting sowers hard so far, eventually those hits are going to find some gaps or some seats.
whale - I would not give up Baker and prob. not Perkins, I have faith in the Twins’ farm system to believe Blackburn and Slowey are easily replaceable. Heck, they may have drafted both replacements this year.
punto in the lineup again is a JOKE! Buscher should be in there and Harris and come on why use Monroe he SUCKS it should be LAMB!
gardy’s a dang fool for not having mauer in today. He should be able to play every freakin’ day trade Redmond or somethign so that idiot Gardy has no excuse to use him!
that run in the 2nd is all puntos fault. I dont know how but it IS!
Trade for Beltray, get rid of Boof and Livan and Bass and get Liriano up here NAO!
another crappy at bat by punto. if we lose this game it’ll be all his fawlt!
Really knocked the cover off the ball that inning.
another lousey play by kubel. free kubel! right. like he freed that ball!
another lousy play by kubel? how many lousy plays can he make sitting in the dugout as a DH?
lasvegasdave, good young pitching is hard to find and we’ll never know down the road how good any of our minor league pitchers will fare in the majors. we’ve seen enough of blackburn and slowey to know that they could be adequate pitchers in our rotation for years. and to give that up for 1 1/3 years of adrian beltre? hardly worth it…
and now morneua cant make the play. from mvp to goat in one inning
whalefeet,
6. Jason Kubel, RF
7. Craig Monroe, DH
from misplay to stunning play. making the average look spectacular.
Span makes a web gem performing the “wrong-shoulder drill”!
Interesting insight from Dick about Ryan Garko regarding the danger of judging a player after one good season - Michael Cuddyer anyone?
cuddyer, punto, kubel…the list goes on and on ben
I only thought of Cuddyer because Garko’s one good season is very similar to Cuddy’s.
Here is my call Delmon is going to go yard.
What its a small yard
last sunday it was baker. this sunday its blackburn. apparently the twins don’t like scoring runs unless the pitcher is sucky.
Perfect game baby! (so far) Sorry lineup by the Twinkies.
“the danger of judging a player after one good season …cuddyer, punto, kubel…the list goes on and on”
The other teams are so lucky that it never happens to them.
Burning, he went yard all right - about a yard behind 2nd base.
Twinkies lack leadership and fire inthe belly - they look like this is just practice.
“You actually do have access…it’s streamed at am1500.com (kstp website)”
I don’t believe they stream the Twins games or the pre/post game content. You can get it though if you pay like 14 bucks or something on mlb.com for gameday audio. I have it and it works just fine.
WAKE UP CALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It would have been out in my back yard for sure.
I swear to god if the Twins let Sowers no-hit them today I am renouncing my faith in this team.
Sowers must be taking advice from Cy Byrd about how to mesmerize the Twins with a weird delivery.
JustinCB,
I believe that was in reference to Bill Smith’s radio show or whatever it was…not the game.
beltray wouldve hit a homerun by now. this loss is all smiths fault
So far today looks like the perfect storm of anti-Twindom, which in hindsight was predictable:
Sucky pitcher with high e.r.a
Lefthander
Gardy’s Sunday lineup
Getaway day
Need to kill a live chicken or hit Cerrano’s Jobu shrine to break this mojo.
How do people get the text to come up in italics when they are quoting another post, can’t figure it out.
Wow that’s incredible. A PERFECT GAME.
It’d be a shame if his PERFECT GAME was blown by a homerun.
PERFECT GAME!
Hey Young made a routine play look routine
justin ask the Blog Cop. he does it all the time
Oh, well they usually have Bill Smith on before the games once a week and I think it used to be Sunday’s so I thought that was what they were referring to.
tired,
1 season wonders…the heartthrob of this blog…Beltre
We have the big bats coming up now. Look out.
and monroe blows the perfect game. at least they could’ve done something to make this loss worthwhiel.
Yay, a double for Rondell Monroe!
CRAIGGIE BABY!
Monroe’s my hero.
actually, yes, we do have an on air twins reporter (roy smalley) at the dells.
let’s see if we can pull of two sacrifices (or fielders’ choice) this time.
Why are Marney, Smalley, and Tony Pants at the Dells?
so when do we get to watch Liarino not pitch for the twins down in rochester?
I don’t think a guy could throw a perfect game when he has a 5.86 ERA…
because the only thing minnesota has like it is valleyfair, and thats not as fun
punto can only get on base when they leth im what a JOEK!
What was Marte doing that was terrible nice for the Twins though
2 on, no outs - and Punto tries his best for DP
Come on Denard!
Punto puts on a bunting clinic.
Just like last……
Never mind!
Well Span does have to long pop outs.
3 on, no outs - what now?
way to go span had to get an out didnt ya
I just love how these guys knock it all around the ball park. I mean the infield part of the ball park.
squeeze play time.
twins baseball everybody
Double, Triple - something!!
2 runs with out an outfielder touching the ball.
Piranha baseball
disgusting, not one ball out of the infield… still, it’s 2 runs.
Homeruns are ridiculously overrated!
What the heck! A batting practice-type pitcher and all these grounders??!!! Oh well, the pitching better hild up.
Clean the blood off of the bats and do it again next inning!
well, monroe’s double did reach the outfield, barely…
4-2 TIgers over the ChiSox - bottim of 6th
Italics
5 - 2 Pussycats over the Dirty Sox now
Blackburn could pitch a perfect game backwards today - wishfully hoping!
Those Tiggers are now beginning to pour it on the White Sox!!
Morneau is not seeing this guy well at all today.
Almost had Delmon there.
santana has a one-hitter through six against 7 er off lohse.
This is pretty sorry to see this weak lineup try to hit this absolutely much less-than average (minor league) pitcher.
Hey -, how’d you do that?
Man, I really like Blackies delivery. Smooth as silk. Doesn’t look like he puts much effort into it. Sure seems like he also hides the ball pretty well too.
i must add that santana has one k — he struck out lohse.
Hahaha, 7 runs 11 hits for Lohse in 5 innings…. Now thats the Kyle I remember so (un)fondly. Too bad the other guy is a freaking man-beast on the mound.
html: words
(but leave out the spaces)
whoops
Justin, it’s really pretty simple
Do alittle reading here http://www.epinions.com/content_2234032260
words
(now. put all those on the same line)
Sowers had that one decent year, 2006 maybe?
I guess I don’t know how to make the code show up.
Justin, just be careful, some people on here seem to get upset when you use italics when replying to a comment. Don’t know why people get upset when you make it obvious who and what you are replying to, but they do. I have used it on occasion, but mostly go with the BOLD text on occasion to make a point stand out.
To make it easy, put a “”before and a “”after what you what to italicize minus the quote marks.
ha, can’t make it show up either ![]()
Kinda surprised Punto didn’t get that ball.
This should be Blackburn’s inning to pitch - 99 pitch count? Come on, let him get 110 or 120!!!! He’s been doing great why mess around with what was working??!!!!
Maybe we will get to see Rincon today.
ugh reyes strikes again
there goes gardy managing us out of the game gaain
What was I saying???? Gardy acts then thinks. He is at best a so-so manager… no doubt!
Good job Gardy!
Looks like Santana helped himself out getting a single to score a run.
Looks like CyTana is going to get a win today, but only if his bullpen doesn’t have another meltdown.
Now, in our game, we see our Situational Lefty come in and give up hits to both the guys he faces.
No save for Nathan today. Thanks Gardy
“This is pretty sorry to see this weak lineup try to hit this absolutely much less-than average (minor league) pitcher.
Then why is the guy making Morneau look like sh-t?
Is MVP a bad hitter?
Every dog has his day!
Sowers is a Major League pitcher who can be tough when he executes his pitches, just like Livan, Boof, Bass, Lohse, Ponson and all the rest of the MLB pitchers - good or bad.
I’d hate to bring in our best pitcher when we need him…
way to go guerier. well, i knew this would happen. should of let blackburne pitch. at least then he gets to win or lose on his own
Stand up and cheer for Gardinhire, yay!
and now fsn cant get the set up right. where are the runners you IDIOTS
Blackburn should have gotten the win. Why oh God why was Reyes pitching.
Surprised that the Grady didn’t tag up and get to second on that deep ball. Span certainly wasn’t in position to get that ball in, and doesn’t have the strongest arm either.
your right gatty, nathan should’ve been brought in to start the 8th.
its so obvious. i dunno why you and i are the only ones to think of it.
Thanks Reyes. That is who is really to blame. What an awful job!
I hope our offense can come alive in the ninth to win this game since the tigers are leading by 4
im glad gardy brought in reyes. now i can just use him as a scape goat instead of just trying to analyze the game as a whoel
Just get the guy at the plate then you don’t need to worry about the !$&! runners.
nuh uh nora. the manager and coaches are the only people who should be blamed when things go wrong.
unless you hate the player who made the mistake. like punto.
you can blame the player when things go right htough
Nathan is making alot of money how about he earns it with more than an inning? I think the media needs to ask him this after the game.
Yeah, we need to start using Nathan as the setup guy too. No way should our highest paid pitcher be sitting on the bench when he could easily come in in every close game in the 8th. inning. Why even bother having all these other pitchers on the staff. Heck, get rid of all the relievers, and just use Nathan out of the pen. The Starters should easily be able to go 7+ every single day.
/S
listen to me too. he’s got it right!
Why the Mex and not the Breslow? Gardy has SFB sometimes.
Goodness, all we are saying is that Nathan could occasionally be used for more then one inning. Don’t it would kill him or the Twins.
Don’t ‘think’ it would kill him or the Twins i meant.
When was the last time the Twins used him? I know his arm isn’t tired…
Nathan in the 8th every close game? No, but tonight? Yes! It was obvious
learn how to fucking spell, retard
it was obvious tonight. and if it happens tomorrow against the sox its obvious AGAIN.
who care if it ends up being obvious 4 nights in row it needs to be DONE!
Nora, your “occasionally” seems to pop up at least once a week.
I have personally witnessed what happens when relievers get overused, and I am sure you have as well. I am pretty sure that Gardy doesn’t want to put his pitchers into that position.
If you always put Nathan in in any close game, when do you put your other relievers in? Only in blowouts? How many games can he pitch before he becomes ineffective as well?
Um, Nora? Joe Nathan does not make the decision on when to enter a game, or how many innings he pitches.
This is the time it really hurts the twins not to have a lot of HR hitters
way to go casilla. how about you hit that straighter next time?
Almost the exact situation two nights ago…
“Nathan in the 8th every close game? No, but tonight? Yes! It was obvious”
Yeah, using up Nathan today is obvious.
We won’t need him against the DIVISION-LEADING WHITE SOX THE NEXT TWO DAYS!!!!
We can fall 2-3 more games behind with Bass as the closer against the White Sox!
I know he is not a HR hitter, but how many HRs has Mike Redmond hit with the Twins?
i think redmond has 1.
Why didn’t Mauer PH there?
When is the next scheduled Nathan-in-the-8th-inning argument?
I’ll go shoot 18 holes of golf.
I know Gardy has had some success with Redmond batting third, but he should be hitting lower in the order. Instead of Redmond, Delmon should be batting third.
wedge is a moron for not walking justni
Yay, the stupid pitcher made a mistake to Morne!
sid, it’ll be the next time the twins have a close game in the 8th
Now Nathan can pitch the 9th inning!
Gardy has no clue!
Right over the middle of the plate, almost Bass like…
Hit a HR Kubel!
this pitcher sucks. twins were lucky wege was dumb enough to go to him
Gardy was right!
The blog was wrong!
I won an easy $5!
Another dumbass wanted to bet!
Does anyone notice that after a pitcher IBBs a guy that the next batter usually get ball one on the first pitch?
We can always count on the Indians bp to help us out I guess, or the mvp. LOL
Over the middle of the plate again.
Juannie is warming up for the Indians
wedge is a moron. gardy has no clue. you people are too funny.
now I can repeat all the ridiculous, pipe dreamy comments about the Beltre trade in their original sad sack glory!
At least Monroe is batting over .200 now
italics?
oh yeah, figured it out
The Tigers are on the verge of what literally could be their last AL Central win this year…
Nathan has nothing on the ball!
Loosen up Boooof!
If I were Blaackburn, I would be on fire mad at Gardy. I had another inning to go and was in total command. This should have been a Blackburn earned victory. Gardy is making this way to difficult and wearing out some pitchers and psyches.
Get Nathan out of there!
He has to pitch the 8th AND 9th innings, Monday thru Thursday!
Too damn late!!!!!
Yes, they will win, but Gardy’s style is no method for any kind of playoff contender or winner.
good win, beat the 2 guys we should beat. Need to take 3 or 4 from the whities
We need Beltre!!!! 16 HR’s - just like Morneau. Bats 4th - just like Morneau. 74 RBI’s - just like Morneau’s 76. What that’s 47 - what a clutch hitter! Oh well , maybe run productio(RBI’s + Runs- HR’s, divide by AB’s). Beltre is .2135 versus .3714,.2327,.2659 for Buscher, Harris, Punto, respectively.
yeah. i totally agree socalfan! its a good thing we at home can judge the players and how well they’re pitching without actually being able to talk to them or anything.
second guessing is fun!
Crushing loss for the Indians
WHite Sox will probably lose today - it’s 6-4 Tigers in top of the 9th and two outs.
socals right. gardy doesn’t manage like winner. that’s why this teams only second place in the division!
its also why this team never wins anything. a WINNING TEAM would have a winning record instead of fluttering in the gutter.
we need gardy to be a good manager like leyland! thats a guy that knows how to take a lousy team and win!
If the White Sox rally and beat the Tigers, its Gardy’s fault!!!
At least Leyland made it to a world series, doubling Gardy’s postseason series win total.
Tigers win! Daaaaaaaaa Tigers win!!!!!!
If the White Sox DON’T rally and beat the Tigers, its Gardy’s fault!!!
leyland did make it to a would series! and so did ozzie.
meanwhiel the twins have floundered in the division. o nly winning it like 4 times in the past 6 years.
Twins win, Sox lose. It’s a good day.
Was Zumaya hurt in the eighth?
Hopefully that is the theme for the upcoming series. LOL
I see injury delay on gameday and Zumaya is taken out after…
I hope that is the theme for the rest of the season!
It’s so much fun to see so much bitching and complaining about another WIN!!!
Sit back and enjoy…it saves on pacemaker batteries.
Regards,
Gardy does what is marginal to get most out of his “minor” league players (escept M&M)… he cannot not and will not be able to manage ala LaRussa. Even with a Yankees team, he would not be able to get past the ALCS - his style is questionable with his choices of relievers and full (i mean FULL) use of his starters - HE SIMPLY MAKES EVERYTHINS WAY TOO HARD - a way for him to look good, I guess).
The Twins are so loaded with talent (like Punto, Lamb, Monroe, Redmond, Bonser, Bass, Reyes, Livan, Guerrier, Crain, etc) that only a dumbass like Gardy would have them stuck in 2nd place, 2 1/2 games out on July 28.
“Even with a Yankees team, he would not be able to get past the ALCS”
You mean like Joe Torre?
I love it that this team’s regular season success flies in the face of the Eastern focused media but I am not at all confident of Gardy’s ability to manage the big games against the bit teams. I am holding out hope for him to see the light and allow his starters who show command of a game to go past the 7th and also use the best and hottest relievers (Breslow and Nathan) when truly needed.
Yes - Joa and Gardy are very similar - YOU GOT IT!!!
Joe - that is
Wow! What a turn of events today? Thought for sure the Twins were going to curl into a ball like they did last Sunday when Padilla was shutting them down.
Monroe got his bloop hit, and it looks like Sauers never recovered after that. Which is weird, he went from cruising to dead in the water in a matter of pitches (almost like Baker last night)
I don’t know if Reyes would’ve been my choice for the 8th, but he Crain and Guerrier are the 8th inning guys until Neshek gets back or the Twins can find somebody on the market. Reyes let the club down, but Guerrier managed to pick him up (well, half)
Blackburn was obviously done after 7. He was pitching in trouble for almost half the game, and it took the key DP by his defense to end the threat in the 7th.
Reviewing the comments, it looks like the old “pulled early” vs. “not soon enough” argument reared its boring head again. We had this discussion way back in KC (when Gardy left Blackburn in to long…remember that one? The 3-run “homer” off of Nathan?)
It’s a HUGE win for the Twins, who were able to finally break through after struggling for a majority of the game. And considering how the roadtrip started…to only lose 2 games on the Sox after going on a 5 game losing streak is pretty good fortunes.
The Sox have had plenty of chances to put the division away while the Twins have flopped on this road trip. But they haven’t.
Tigers on the other hand have. Don’t think they’ve got the pitching to make it in the long run though. And they’ve dealt most of their prospects to get to where they were now.
Tigers may be heating up, but they’re still behind the Twins. They’ve got a chance to pull closer this week by dealing with the Sox on their own. If the Twins can take 3 it’ll be a huge victory following the last time they played a four game series. 4 would be a MIRACLE (especially with Burhle on Monday)
Should be a fun series, definately going to be very tense.
“Yes - Joa and Gardy are very similar”
The only difference is $250 million in payroll!
SoCal, I’m pretty sure your right. No way that Gardy could ever lead a team like the Yankees to the promised land. Seems that he can only manage teams that are severely lacking in talent. Something about a cheap owner or something. Don’t know for sure. I am sure that somebody on here knows something about the “cheap owner” thing.
Yeah, if Joe Torre and Ron Gardenhire are the same type of manager, then I’m going to have to say Gardy’s the better skip.
Torre was handed a team of perennial All-Stars with years of experience and talent.
Gardy supposedly is the victim of a cheap owner and a retarded GM who can never do anything except throw out the good and load up the team with washed up bench players from other teams and young players.
That being considered, you gotta give credit for Gardy for still managing to put together four playoff runs in all but two years.
No, T, as we all know, it doesn’t mean squat to make the playoffs. It doesn’t count, unless you win it all. You should know that by now.
Fire Gardy! This team was picked as the pre-season pick to win the World Series and here the Twins are floundering 2-1/2 out in the Central and 2 games out the wild card.
18-26
That’s the Tigers record against the Central this year. I know a lot of people think the Tigers were/are ‘hot’, but they just lost 5 of 7 at home to the two teams ahead of them. They are done and have been done for a month.
if you guys think the twins don’t have talent…maybe you should watch the giants, or the padres, or the nationals, or the mariners, or the royals.
gardy obviously had the lefty reyes in the 8th to face the lefty sizemore. it was a good call that ANY manager would make. reyes not making good pitches is not gardy’s fault. everyone likes to blame the manager when the players do something wrong.
The manager needs to put the players in position to succeed. If the player then doesn’t succeed, it is the players fault, not the manager.
Seems that the right call was made. Lefty in to face a Left handed hitter. If it was 3 righties in there in the 8th, then yes, you would have grounds to complain about Reyes.
Blackburn was banging on the door of 100 pitches, with a lefty scheduled up 2nd in the 8th. Doesn’t seem like a bad decision at that point.
whale’s foot, it was not putting in reyes that was a bad call it was leaving Blackburn in when he was clearly done. Our eight inning guy, G, should have started and ended the eighth.
After all, Reyes only has one job and this is to get lefties out.

“Our eight inning guy, G, should have started and ended the eighth.”
Nonsense!
Read the blog!
NATHAN should have started thr 8th and 9th (and 10th and 11th) if the game was on the line!

“When was the last time the Twins used him? I know his arm isn’t tired…”
CLASSIC 2nd GUESS!
leaving blackburn in when he was clearly done? gardy pulled him after 7. he went 7 and gave up 4 hits and 1 run. reyes came out to start the eighth.
Reyes started the 8th and didn’t so his job. Good job by Guerrier, nice catch by Span (Gomez who?), and good job by Morneau & Kubel in the 9th.
