Kubel, Monroe, Harris. Very weak trio against LHP.

More important, let’s hope Blackburn gets into a ryhthm and finds that consistency he had for a long while.

Well, anyone going to listen to Bill Smith on his interview with Twins Radio? Here in South Dakota, I don’t have that privledge, and would like to find out what he said about the status of Liriano.

Duane says:

July 27th, 2008 at 10:16 am

It truly is too bad that Kubel has to be in there versus a lefty. Monroe should be in Rf and Dh Mauer.

rochester dave says:

July 27th, 2008 at 10:25 am

I just don’t get it. I understand that Mauer needs his rest, but why can’t he dh some of the time. He didn’t start in wednesday’s getaway game at Yankee Stadium, had thursday off, plays 2 days then gets another day off. Gardy is really protecting him from another injury, but when he is out of the lineup, the chemistry and production decrease. On the other hand Gardy kept on sending out go-go when it was apparent that he had no clue as to the strike zone or that a leadoff hitter should be a little patient. Gardy didn’t want to hurt his feelings? Just doesn’t make sense.

Anyways, Liriano is probably starting his last game for the REd Wings tonite. I have seen his last 2 starts and he has been lites out. HOWEVER, IT SHOULD BE NOTED that he has given up the Twins suggestion in spring training to go more overhand and has reverted to his 3/4 motion. He has been great and his delivery is not as violent as before, BUT i am still concerned.

WE LOVE THE TWINS IN ROCHESTER

What? GArdy couldn’t figure out how to get Lamb in the lineup?

mj1 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 10:35 am

this is the lineup we should be sending out everyday…take note bill smith…throw the cheez-whiz away, get out of the easy chair and put your fat ass to work. get something done and stop playing fantasy baseball with this team…and do something to win this division…..its very possible to do

span cf
casilla 2b’
mauer c
morneau 1b
BELTRE 3b
kubel rf
young lf
buscher dh
harris ss

this lineup is pretty solid, and with some good starting pitching and and effective bullpen could win many games yet and maybe be serious contender in oct…..

Dewey Moede says:

July 27th, 2008 at 10:39 am

To The StarTrib,

How come you allow people to call others names and the flat out name calling that is going on toward Bill Smith. This should not be allowed……People that do this need to get a life and go do something productive.

Burning Bush says:

July 27th, 2008 at 10:42 am

Your living in candyland if you think that we are going to trade for Beltre.

Mike says:

July 27th, 2008 at 10:47 am

The lineup makes me shudder. Mauer sits way too often, and why sit Buscher? Five RBIs last night wasn’t enough?

mj1 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 10:50 am

gardy just doesnt like buscher against left handers…not sure how i feel about that, but harris isnt too bad…still wish they could plug beltre in there full time and let buscher dh and play kubel full time

David M says:

July 27th, 2008 at 10:54 am

We should at the very least DFA Mike Lamb and call up Matt Macri. He would give us a capable RH bat against LH pitching at 3rd. I hope Monroe gets hot for a while because we need some production at DH against LH pitching.

mickey mental says:

July 27th, 2008 at 10:54 am

ENOUGH ABOUT BELTRE ALREADY!!!

Mike says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:02 am

I’d like to see what this team could do if it lost Lamb, gained Macre, and lost either Livan/Bonser/Bass and gained Liriano. Ahhh wishful thinking…

Fry Dog says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:03 am

Unless they trade away Lamb’s salary, and also give up 1-2 young arms, the Twins will not get Beltre.

If you were Seattle would you want Lamb…or if you were the Twins would you give up a Perkins and/or Slowey for a 3rd baseman that is almost 30 and expensive?

A lot of people think it would be great for us to trade Livan, Lamb, Everett or maybe Cuddyer. No one wants them and wouldn’t give up someone of Beltre’s caliber. Cuddy maybe before he got hurt…but Gardy and the front office like him and have put him out front as the face and spokesman of the Twins. He’s not going anywhere…

We’re stuck again - with the 1-2 usual players short of being a good playoff team.

Bummer -

You actually do have access…it’s streamed at am1500.com (kstp website)

Ryan says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:05 am

It’s nice to just say “here’s a good lineup, Beltre should bat fifth”, but what about actually considering what you’d have to trade to get him?

mickey mental says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:08 am

the twins should trade bass, lamb and monroe for mike schmidt.

mj1 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:09 am

just take a close look at the other trades that have gone down and what teams have had to give up to complete trades….yankees, dodgers, for instance - that should bring the price for beltre down a bit i would think…

Ben W. says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:09 am

I didn’t see the last two games but on the radio Dan Gladden mentioned that Mauer was running gingerly.

Fry Dog says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:10 am

I’m also not sold on bringing Liriano up right away unless there is an obvious need in the starting line up. He has great talent, but needs to mature big time.

The organization sent some strong messages to Casilla and Span in the past year by sending them down. It made them better players in the majors now. Liriano is perhaps an even bigger challenge than those two - poor work ethic, stubborn, etc.

I say to delay bringing him as long as possible and potentially send send him back down again if you need to. He might be nothing more than a one year wonder (a.k.a Mark Fidrich) Otherwise trade him while you can for the missing power bat we need.

mickey mental says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:12 am

mj1, any thoughts on trades you think the twins should make?

mj1 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:15 am

mickey, its obvious what the twins need, they just need the f.o. to make the attempts to fill those holes….gardy knows what they are, as he has stated many times, the fans know, now lets just see what mr smith says and does…..i will not hold my breath on mr smith doing anything…have lost confidence in him…as he is speaking on the radio right now…and saying nothing

mike wants wins says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:18 am

The Twins will not trade for help this year. They are too afraid of not having enough players next year (but, given they don’t have enough this year, I’m not sure where these new players will come from next year - aka, they are just doing what they always do).

As for fear, I’m afraid they’ll bring Everrett back up in a few days, and send an actual player down to the minors. Everrett (sp?) does nothing for them this year at all. There is no reason for him to be on the team. None.

Burning Bush says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:27 am

Everett will get his out right when he comes back healthy in the next few days.

mike wants wins says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:28 am

Heh, why does anyone bother calling into the Bill Smith show? He doesn’t say anything of meaning at all. That isn’t surprising, but I’m not sure why anyone calls that show.

He just said Monroe supplies some thunder, but his average hasn’t been what they’d hoped against lefties….so I guess he said something there.

mj1 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:31 am

bill smith is as boring as he is slow to make any moves…what a waste of time on the radio. couldnt agree with mike any more –

mj1 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:33 am

seems like bill smith was more concerned with the big crowds that are possible than anything….such a shame

mike wants wins says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:34 am

I’m not going to slam him for not trading for this year, not completely. I’m not sure they are as close this year as they were earlier in the decade when they also did nothing.

This is his first year. It is too early for me to judge him (of course, I judged Childress after a couple of games….). If they continue to only worry about next year, again next year, and the year after, then we’ll know he is just Terry Ryan in another body. Was it Hunter or Santana who said this team only worries about next year, but next year never comes….

mj1 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:36 am

ya know with the biggest series of the year on the horizon, just a day away and a team that has faltered some lately, what a way to fire up a crowd and the home team, by announcing a couple of moves including liriano coming up and adding some strength to the lineup –that would be such wonderful way to start off the series…..they have had alot of time to work on this and i guess we will see by tonite if they care at all about anything but crowd size….

sane says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:38 am

In order to fill our holes, we could give up OUR comparable minor leaguer to 19-yr-old ex-Yankee prospect Jose Tabata who was traded to the Pirates.

And that would be…………………………………never mind!

Burning Bush says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:40 am

That would be Carlos Gomez sane he would be comparable

sane says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:44 am

Burning Bush,
That’s a good call!
Now who wants to trade Carlos Gomez plus three prospects for Nady and Marte?

Burning Bush says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:47 am

Sounds like a bad trade to me but what do I know. Everyone here think that Tobata is just some scrub that would sniff the majors or something. He is a 5 tool kid that has been playing pro ball for like 2 years already and i think he might be the best field player in the Yankees system right now.

Burning Bush says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:48 am

I mean was there top field prospect.

whalefeet says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:48 am

beltre is not all that great…why does everyone want him so bad?

Mauer is obviously resting after a night game, and because he’ll probably be in 6 straight night games this week, 4 against the sox. all catchers rest, look at shoppach.

Burning Bush says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:52 am

People think that Mauer should be behind the plate every inning every game that is just unrealistic. He catches as many or more that just about ever catcher in the league but that not good enough for these fans. I also agree with you about Beltre.

sane says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:52 am

Burning Bush,
I would say that you know enough to recognize a bad trade when you see one.
If the Pirates hit the jackpot with Tabata, then Nady and Marte will become the answers to a trivia question.

mj1 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:53 am

is it best for chicago to sweep det and send them 8.5 back or det win and twins win and keep our gap at 3.5 going into tomorrow

sane says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:55 am

mj1,
IMO the White Sox are the bigger threat, regardless of what JoeC and the Tiger-lovers write.

whalefeet says:

July 27th, 2008 at 11:56 am

i think it’s good detroit lost a couple, both to get them another game behind the twins and to hurt their spirit for winning the division. but a win against the sox today paired with a twins win would be greatly appreciated.

once again…

beltre - .260 avg, .765 ops, 51 r, 16 hr, 47 rbi. (also has .679 ops on turf this year in 8 games)

KUBEL - .263 avg, .782 ops, 49 r, 13 hr, 50 rbi.

mj1 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 12:02 pm

Burning Bush says:

July 27th, 2008 at 12:06 pm

I look ahead and would like the Sox to lose. i really don’t think that the Tigers a a real threat anymore too far back too little season left and two teams to pass. It is asking a lot for a team that doesn’t pitch real well.

whalefeet says:

July 27th, 2008 at 12:12 pm

tigers do not play well in the division, plus with their lack of pitching depth, they don’t have a chance. but i think being 2.5 games out of first looks good with a big 4 game series coming up.

whalefeet says:

July 27th, 2008 at 12:35 pm

1 - i never said kubel could, i just posted beltre’s stats in comparison with kubel to remind everyone what we’d be trading for.
2 - kubel’s always had potential, but has been hurt. he had a great 2nd half last year when he was healthy, and is putting it together this year.
3 - i never said he was.
4 - looking for beltre to repeat his last contract year performance is probably not a good idea. his stats were so inflated that it’s obvious he had a little “help”.
5 - yes, but the players they would need to part with to get him would be too much. you’re talking one of our 4 young starters, PLUS minor leaguers. that’s just not a good idea for a rebuilding team. if they could get him for a couple minor league pitchers, i’d be all for it, but that’s not gonna happen.

Bill Brasky says:

the twins have been hitting sowers hard so far, eventually those hits are going to find some gaps or some seats.

LasVegasDave says:

lasvegasdave, good young pitching is hard to find and we’ll never know down the road how good any of our minor league pitchers will fare in the majors. we’ve seen enough of blackburn and slowey to know that they could be adequate pitchers in our rotation for years. and to give that up for 1 1/3 years of adrian beltre? hardly worth it…

Me Too says:

July 27th, 2008 at 2:25 pm

Yeah, we need to start using Nathan as the setup guy too. No way should our highest paid pitcher be sitting on the bench when he could easily come in in every close game in the 8th. inning. Why even bother having all these other pitchers on the staff. Heck, get rid of all the relievers, and just use Nathan out of the pen. The Starters should easily be able to go 7+ every single day.

Nora, your “occasionally” seems to pop up at least once a week.
I have personally witnessed what happens when relievers get overused, and I am sure you have as well. I am pretty sure that Gardy doesn’t want to put his pitchers into that position.
If you always put Nathan in in any close game, when do you put your other relievers in? Only in blowouts? How many games can he pitch before he becomes ineffective as well?

You've got to be kidding! says:

Gardy does what is marginal to get most out of his “minor” league players (escept M&M)… he cannot not and will not be able to manage ala LaRussa. Even with a Yankees team, he would not be able to get past the ALCS - his style is questionable with his choices of relievers and full (i mean FULL) use of his starters - HE SIMPLY MAKES EVERYTHINS WAY TOO HARD - a way for him to look good, I guess).

sid says:

July 27th, 2008 at 2:57 pm

The Twins are so loaded with talent (like Punto, Lamb, Monroe, Redmond, Bonser, Bass, Reyes, Livan, Guerrier, Crain, etc) that only a dumbass like Gardy would have them stuck in 2nd place, 2 1/2 games out on July 28.

sid says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:00 pm

“Even with a Yankees team, he would not be able to get past the ALCS”

You mean like Joe Torre?

Twins SoCal Fan says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:01 pm

I love it that this team’s regular season success flies in the face of the Eastern focused media but I am not at all confident of Gardy’s ability to manage the big games against the bit teams. I am holding out hope for him to see the light and allow his starters who show command of a game to go past the 7th and also use the best and hottest relievers (Breslow and Nathan) when truly needed.

Twins SoCal Fan says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:02 pm

Yes - Joa and Gardy are very similar - YOU GOT IT!!!

Twins SoCal Fan says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:03 pm

Joe - that is

T says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:04 pm

Wow! What a turn of events today? Thought for sure the Twins were going to curl into a ball like they did last Sunday when Padilla was shutting them down.

Monroe got his bloop hit, and it looks like Sauers never recovered after that. Which is weird, he went from cruising to dead in the water in a matter of pitches (almost like Baker last night)

I don’t know if Reyes would’ve been my choice for the 8th, but he Crain and Guerrier are the 8th inning guys until Neshek gets back or the Twins can find somebody on the market. Reyes let the club down, but Guerrier managed to pick him up (well, half)

Blackburn was obviously done after 7. He was pitching in trouble for almost half the game, and it took the key DP by his defense to end the threat in the 7th.

Reviewing the comments, it looks like the old “pulled early” vs. “not soon enough” argument reared its boring head again. We had this discussion way back in KC (when Gardy left Blackburn in to long…remember that one? The 3-run “homer” off of Nathan?)

It’s a HUGE win for the Twins, who were able to finally break through after struggling for a majority of the game. And considering how the roadtrip started…to only lose 2 games on the Sox after going on a 5 game losing streak is pretty good fortunes.

The Sox have had plenty of chances to put the division away while the Twins have flopped on this road trip. But they haven’t.

Tigers on the other hand have. Don’t think they’ve got the pitching to make it in the long run though. And they’ve dealt most of their prospects to get to where they were now.

Tigers may be heating up, but they’re still behind the Twins. They’ve got a chance to pull closer this week by dealing with the Sox on their own. If the Twins can take 3 it’ll be a huge victory following the last time they played a four game series. 4 would be a MIRACLE (especially with Burhle on Monday)

Should be a fun series, definately going to be very tense.

sid says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:04 pm

“Yes - Joa and Gardy are very similar”

The only difference is $250 million in payroll!

Me Too says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:07 pm

SoCal, I’m pretty sure your right. No way that Gardy could ever lead a team like the Yankees to the promised land. Seems that he can only manage teams that are severely lacking in talent. Something about a cheap owner or something. Don’t know for sure. I am sure that somebody on here knows something about the “cheap owner” thing.

T says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:13 pm

Yeah, if Joe Torre and Ron Gardenhire are the same type of manager, then I’m going to have to say Gardy’s the better skip.

Torre was handed a team of perennial All-Stars with years of experience and talent.

Gardy supposedly is the victim of a cheap owner and a retarded GM who can never do anything except throw out the good and load up the team with washed up bench players from other teams and young players.

That being considered, you gotta give credit for Gardy for still managing to put together four playoff runs in all but two years.

Me Too says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:18 pm

No, T, as we all know, it doesn’t mean squat to make the playoffs. It doesn’t count, unless you win it all. You should know that by now.

Bullmoose says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:20 pm

Fire Gardy! This team was picked as the pre-season pick to win the World Series and here the Twins are floundering 2-1/2 out in the Central and 2 games out the wild card.

gatty790 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:21 pm

18-26

That’s the Tigers record against the Central this year. I know a lot of people think the Tigers were/are ‘hot’, but they just lost 5 of 7 at home to the two teams ahead of them. They are done and have been done for a month.

whalefeet says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:22 pm

if you guys think the twins don’t have talent…maybe you should watch the giants, or the padres, or the nationals, or the mariners, or the royals.

gardy obviously had the lefty reyes in the 8th to face the lefty sizemore. it was a good call that ANY manager would make. reyes not making good pitches is not gardy’s fault. everyone likes to blame the manager when the players do something wrong.

Me Too says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

The manager needs to put the players in position to succeed. If the player then doesn’t succeed, it is the players fault, not the manager.
Seems that the right call was made. Lefty in to face a Left handed hitter. If it was 3 righties in there in the 8th, then yes, you would have grounds to complain about Reyes.
Blackburn was banging on the door of 100 pitches, with a lefty scheduled up 2nd in the 8th. Doesn’t seem like a bad decision at that point.

gatty790 says:

July 27th, 2008 at 3:28 pm
