Perkins will make scheduled start against Yankees

Posted on August 11th, 2008 – 1:31 PM
By Joe Christensen

Glen Perkins will make tonight’s scheduled start against the Yankees after tending to the birth of his second child, the Star Tribune has learned.

Perkins left the Twins on Sunday in Kansas City to be with his wife, Alisha, who had gone into labor in the Twin Cities. Nick Blackburn was prepared to start in Perkins’ place tonight, but word from the Metrodome today is that all went well with the birth.

Another baby girl for Glen and Alisha! The team was still awaiting details.

Check back here for tonight’s starting lineups and other pregame notes.

Update (3:10 p.m.): Lyla Cynthia Perkins was born Sunday at 5:58 p.m., at Regions Hospital in St. Paul, measuring 21 inches and weighing eight pounds.

Congrats Perk, win one for the team now

Dunn to the D-Backs for prospects. Guess we didn’t need him.

You've got to be kidding me! says:

Perkins is a rather excitable fellow. He will either be lights out, or get shelled tonight. There will be no in between.

Baseball aside, gongratulations to the Perkins family.

You've got to be kidding me! says:

the Twins couldn’t have gotten Dunn. The D-backs, by virtue of their inferior record, have priority in the waiver claim process.

Kevin says:

Congrats Perk, now maybe you’ll be a little nicer than you were at Twinsfest. You looked like you were having about as much fun as if you were getting your teeth pulled. And when my 11 year old nephew said hi to you at the autograph table; you didn’t even acknowledge he was there. Don’t forget, it’s us fans who pay your salary

Paul says:

Forgot about the waiver priority deal Thanks YGTBKM

You've got to be kidding me! says:

though it would be nice to have dunn as a legit 5 hitter, though he does have the rep of being fairly lazy.

John says:

August 11th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Does every national league team have first crack in waiver priority for national league players? And the same goes for the American League. I seem to remember this was the rule but I could be wrong.

jimmy bee says:

August 11th, 2008 at 1:59 pm

Dunn would have been a nice addition to the Twins as a DH.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

yes John, NL gets first on NL players, Al on AL players

Paul says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:00 pm

I know he’s a slugger but doesn’t he strikeout a lot? He and LNP could be best buds!

does this mean that perk’s kid was presented by edina realty like the yankee series is?
i heard a tv guy this weekend say that the yankees had to go play the “pesky” twins. i guess they think of us as fruit flies buzzing around the big apple, which is being presented by edina realty.

romer says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:03 pm

Perk? Blackburn? Who cares……….kind of.

The pitcher to focus on is Ponson.

I’m not feeling good about this series.

Gomez and Punto are in the tank. Kubel looks a little down. Guerrier might be washed up for the season. Ruiz has disappeared to the bench.

And the Yankees’ pride will be at full-tilt and they are staring at their dying breath for the season. Look for a s**tload of HR’s coming from these veterans and for the Twins to get bashed.

The Twins should have called — and STILL should call — Machado up, send Ruiz down. A HR threat off the bench is inconsequential compared to the need for the same in the everyday lineup. And Punto needs to find his natural bench position again for the next 10 days till Casilla returns.

So, it’s a HR-bench-threat vs. the no-offense-Punto. A no-brainer…

Shawn in Binghamton says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:04 pm

a promo on YES had the dangerous Twins, w Gomez snapping a bat over his knee

Shawn in Binghamton says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

ESPN.com had a stat on Ponson, that he doesn’t do well if he throws more than 185 pitches in 10 days

well in the last 2 starts he is at 191, hopefully that rather loose stat comes true

Tedd says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:06 pm

They should have made a move at the deadline but just like the wild, they do nothing or really nothing. Its obvious to even us couch potatoes that this team cannot win with the bullpen. After Neshek got hurt that should have been top priority. And could the gaping hole from the right side of the plate be any more obvious!! Zygi is the only owner on the local sport scene that is showing the fans that he wants a winner. The twins just keep preaching the same old song just life the holes at Xcel. 87 and 91. Guess what…we had more bats than pitching both years. Selling this to your loyal base is almost as ludicrous as what the wild sell to theres! Shameful!

Shawn in Binghamton says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:08 pm

the pitching in 91 was pretty good

I thought that the trade deadline was over. How did AZ trade for Dunn if the deadline has gone and passed

big k says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:10 pm

Zygi rocks, lets all buy season tickets for the vikes, they spend money and manage the cap well… just if they could get someone to manage the game well…

Shawn in Binghamton says:

After the trade dealine, teams can still make a trade, but the player has to pass through waivers first, meaning a team with first dibs can take the player and the team trading for him gets left out in the cold.

BigGuy says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Don’t claims go by record and the Twins have a pretty good record. Anyone good isn’t going to get to the Twins.

Going Yard says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

I’m out of town for the week. Does anyone know if MLB.TV will be able to carry the yankees series, or if it’s in blackout again???

big k says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:13 pm

Lets sign butch huskey

Going Yard says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

I see on the schedule that they’re calling this a “premium home game” series

big k says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:14 pm

why do you want to watch the twins get spanked when you can watch two girls get spanked???/ Doesnt make sense Going Yard

John says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Jimmy Bee - Consider the July 31 trading deadline a “soft deadline.” Players with bad contracts or who aren’t that good often get traded or claimed in August. Livan is a good example. If a player makes it through waivers without a claim, they can be traded to any team. If they are claimed, they can be either traded to that team or their team most likely will pull them back.

big k says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

If you think Gomez sucks clap your hands… CLAP CLAP

Anyone else notice his arm blows?

BC of ND says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Two of Perks three losses are against the Yanks this year I hope he learned something from those games

Justin says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:15 pm

Going Yard,
The Twins are blacked out on MLB.TV for you because I am assuming you’re from the Twin Cities area and all teams are blackout on MLB.TV in their home market. Now if you can sign up your account and say your from a different state then you might be able to watch.

Going Yard says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

It does - so send me a link.

Or are the 2 girls getting spanked you are referring to Punto and Gomez playing baseball??

jimmy bee says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

John we should have done that with Everett and Lamb and Boof

big k says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

Are we ever gonna get a GM with some balls? Im not talking baseballs

Bombo Rivera says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:17 pm

If you went through school with the name GLEN, you’d be bitter and mean, too.

John says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:18 pm

We probably did with Everett and Lamb but no one claimed them. Boof has value on some planet.

jimmy bee says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Bombo Rivera I don’t think I would like the name Zach

gobbledygookguy says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

i think this is correct that a player goes on waivers has to go through his league and then the other league. if any team claims him they have 48 hrs to make a deal (trade of some sort) allow them to take him and his contract (like livan) with no compensation or they can pull the player back off waivers and keep him. i think they can only go on waivers once in this period.

big k says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:19 pm

Well, to be honest i would watch the girls getting spanked than this series although if punto and gomez were the ones spanking the girls, that might work me to, not that i want to see punto or gomez, or anything remotely like that…. hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm i wonder if anyone knows my secret…..

Shawn in Binghamton says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:20 pm

Thus is unrelated but has anyone ever seen a game at Raymond James in Tampa?

been offered some Vikes tix

Duane says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:21 pm

Punto playing yesterday and going 0 for 5 with 4 strikeouts is totally ridiculous. Why didn’t he get pinch hit for? Time for Gardy to stop playing him full-time.

Going Yard says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:21 pm

Justin - I thought it had to do with the location that you were currently in. In other words MLB.TV looks at the IP address from where you’re logged in to determine the blackout market?? So if I’m in LA, I could still watch the game because I’m not in the “Twins” blackout area.

big k says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:21 pm

hey glen, that is a cool name, glen, well glen, how bout we just call you big perk.

SweetOne says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:32 pm

Duane,

With Lamb playing 1B, Harris was the only infielder on the Bench and he came in the game when Everett was PH for. So they had no one left who could play 2B.

mike wants wins says:

August 11th, 2008 at 2:38 pm

The point isn’t necessarily that Dunn is now not going to be a Twin, but that other teams have found ways to, presumably, make themselves better. Meanwhile, the Twins congratulate themselves for not mortgaging the future (a future that does not inlcude signing a legit FA, or trading for a guy in his prime, or making a deal at next year’s trading deadline to make the team better, all while raising ticket prices….).

chris says:

I’ve got a question…. Why don’t ballplayers plan to have babies in the offseason? It would save a lot of stress during and give them time to spend with their families.

brianS says:

The trade deadline is irrelevant to the Twins’ ability to trade for Dunn. He could have been had before the deadline.

as for the strikeouts and low average — sure, but his OPS is over 900. That’s a lot of run production potential.

But he’s a left-handed hitter. That plus he’s an expensive rental (current $13M contract ends this year, plus another $500K as a trade kicker).

So he’d be an expensive left-handed rental DH who would provide a small improvement in productivity over Kubel at best. Understandable why Bill Smith wasn’t willing to trade real assets for him.

Rochester beat Indianapolis 5-4 this afternoon. Jason FREE ME Pridie was 2-4 with a double. Machado 2-4. Howie Clark and Garrett Jones homered and had multi-hit games. Luke Hughes 0-4 w/3 Ks, Trevor Plouffe 0-4. FREE RICKY BARRETT stranded the runner he inherited and gave up no runs although he did face 9 batters in his 1 2/3 IP. 3 hits and 2 walks were minimized by 3 Ks. Ah, the power of striking out 1 in 3 batters faced… Korecky pitched two innings of 1 hit ball and struck out 1 to get the win.

Is Dunn more likely to be a Type A or Type B free agent? I would think that would have a huge impact on how much you would give up for him. Just throwing that out there.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

August 11th, 2008 at 3:23 pm

I think Dunn will be a type A due to the HR production

toby says:

August 11th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

Zendor, for the umpteenth time:

Ricky Barrett.
Rob Delaney.
Anthony Slama (maybe — needs to be tried in AA, which they shamefully haven’t done).

Leftyd says:

August 11th, 2008 at 3:27 pm

What’s the word on Machado at Rochester? He’s listed at SS, but has been DH’ing a lot. He is tearing it up at the plate. It would be great if he were a prospect to help in the middle infield…and if his hitting is ligit.

Leftyd says:

August 11th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

…and regarding the recent article about there being no bullpen help at Rochester. Do the Twins really think Brian Bass is better than Bobby Korecky? And, what about Ricky Barrett? He wasn’t even mentioned. I know the Twins don’t have options on Bass…but they should let him go and call up Korecky. The bullpen is dying!!!!

jama says:

August 11th, 2008 at 3:29 pm

Shawn

My guess would be Type A also with not only the HR’s but also the OBP and OBPS. His Ave. has been really bad though. I know the D’Backs love draft picks so that might have also been a reason to trade for him.

At least Machado can throw the ball from short to first, remember to cover first base and know how many outs there are. With Punto close to .200 from the left side and Everett under .200, only a fool would keep Machado down on the farm. Oh, wait! I forgot who our GM is….

Bob says:

August 11th, 2008 at 4:12 pm

I think Billy Smith will one day prove to be the owrst general manager in the history of Minnesota team sports and that includes Kevin McHale. He is the Les Steckel of GMs.
