Everett injures hand; X-rays negative

Posted on August 18th, 2008 – 8:53 PM
By Joe Christensen

Twins shortstop Adam Everett left tonight’s game after the sixth inning, when he was hit on the right hand by a foul ball from Nick Punto.

Everett is being taken for X-rays. Brendan Harris took over at shortstop.

Last we checked, Alexi Casilla was 1-for-2 with a walk for Class A Beloit.

Updates to come…

Update (10:27 p.m.): X-rays were negative. Everett was diagnosed with a bruise and said he doesn’t expect to have to go on the disabled list.

If he feels well after tonight it might be a good idea to cut the minor league deal short and get Alexi back for tomorrow’s game and move LNP back to short.

The Season of the Hand continues. I don’t know if I can recall more injuries to hands in season. Seems very odd.

This is perfect timing. I would be willing to put money on Everett going on the DL so the Twins can call up Casilla and not have to actually cut anyone.

When Everett is eligible to come off the DL it will be time to expand the rosters anyway…

I just saw the play from a different camera angle. The ball bounced off Everett’s hand and hit Go Go in the head. No damage done.

Maybe everyone heard, White Sox over M’s 13-5 in the eighth. Four more homers for Sox, but not in a row this time.

Hmm, I wonder how Gardy buries Harris on the bench after looking at strike right there?

What happened to Nathan pitching more often. It didn’t matter, but he should have pitched the 9th. And, he wasn’t warming for the 10th. I don’t get it.

Just got back from the Kernels/Snappers game in CR. Saw what I wanted to see of Casilla. I left after the 7th inning. Weak little pop to 2B in his first AB. Nice line drive single to right in his 2nd AB. Walks his next two times up without getting anything at all to even swing at. No idea if he got up again in the 9th.

Swinging decent from the left side (nice line drive single to right field in his second AB). Played all out on offense (dove back to 1B about 4 times on pick off moves and eventually got caught stealing… also scored from 2B on a single up the middle and slid in to home) and defense (bare hand scoup on a bouncing ball over the pitcher’s head and hard throw to first as he laid out and landed on his hands).

He’s not playing tentative.

Uncanny..

First, the Twins try to designate Everett for assignment, but Cassilla goes down with a hand injury, so they pull Everett back and put Casilla on the DL instead. Now, Casilla’s ready to come back from the DL and, as if on cue, Everett goes down, with a hand injury.

To say nothing of Tolbert’s thumb injury and Cuddyer’s hand then foot. It’s like someone is poking Twins voodoo dolls with pins in their outer appendages or something.

This time he nails a teammate instead of a fan in row 1. Way to get around on the pitch LNP.

Then talking to the plate umpire on strike three…..can you look more foolish.

Take strike one, nail your teammate on a pitch you can’t get around on as a #2 hitter and then take strike 3 and look as usual like you were screwed over.

BTW…nice bench options in the 9th front office.

love the grit

“What happened to Nathan pitching more often. It didn’t matter, but he should have pitched the 9th. And, he wasn’t warming for the 10th. I don’t get it.”

Is the plan to pitch him at the end of all games:
1) Even when behind in the game?
2) Even when he pitched 1 1/3 innings yeaterday?
3)Even when he threw 29 pitches yesterday?

“Diagnosed with a bruise.”

Wow. I was diagnosed with a splinter about a week ago, but I sucked it up and decided to take one for the team and not go on the DL.

JimCrikket,

thanks for the update. Casilla getting a hit batting left is very good news.

(now someone slap Everett about the need to go to the DL statement, please, or send him to Dr. Andrews for a second opinion ;) )

JimCrikket says:

Now you’re just asking people to be logical, sane.

Like blaming a freak injury on a foul ball in to the dugout on the guy who hit the ball.

thrylos98 says:

sane,

last time i checked, this game was not lost because of the pitching… it was the hitting that did not come through. Hopefully Nathan will pitch the 8th tomorrow

Nathan threw 29 pitches yesterday. If he pitches the 9th tonight, and has to throw another 20+ to get through it, he’ll likely be unavailable tomorrow.

If we’re in a save situation, do you want Gardy sending Crain, Guerrier, or Reyes out there?

Breslow did a great job. In fact, with how well Breslow’s been pitching, I think he should stop being considered a left-handed specialist, and get the 8th inning for a bit. He’s earned it.

Dropping back a game on the White Sox right now isn’t exactly a bad thing. With the Twins watching the waiver wire for bullpen help, it puts them back in front of Chicago in the waiver selection pecking order. If it were the other way around and Minnesota pulled ahead, Chicago would have priority on any players put on waivers. Chicago would stake a claim if for no other reason than to block the Twins. I have no idea how it would have worked when the two teams were tied.

The A’s seem to be still trading for the future. Maybe the two teams can agree to something before hand, then put the player(s) on the wire with the Twins ready to claim him. Other teams would also have a shot at the player, but it would be worth a shot.

Better yet, I wish they would just call up Korecky already. They wouldn’t even have to send one of the current pitchers through waivers. They could send down an unproductive bat that still had options left, then bring up whomever they want come the first. They played with thirteen on the staff before, why couldn’t they do it again?

JimCrikket says:

August 18th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

I couldn’t agree more, Steve. After Nathan, I have more confidence in Breslow than anyone else in that bullpen right now. Not sure, though, if it’s because he’s looking so good or everyone else is looking so bad… but it is what it is.

JimCrikket says:

August 18th, 2008 at 10:52 pm

Not sure about sending a bat down and bringing up a pitcher. Might be ok for a week or so, but come the end of the month, you need to trim your pitching staff and add the bats when the playoff roster is set on the last day of August.

IF you make the playoffs, you aren’t going to want a 13 (or even a 12) player pitching staff.

cmathewson says:

Breslow is the most pleasant surprise in a season of pleasant surprises. Who would have thunk, in the offseason, that:

* Denard Span would be an indispensable lead-off hitter in a pennant race
* Brian Buscher would take over the starter job at third and play as well as any third baseman since Koskie
* Nick Blackburn would lead the team in quality starts in August
* Glen Perkins would have 10 victories…in the majors
* Everyone would be waiting with baited breath for the return of Alexi Casilla from the DL
* Craig Breslow would be Gardenhire’s best set-up man going into a pennant chase.

Weird, huh?

JimCrikket says:

That’s hilarious, really, cmath.

Kind of makes all the jabbering we did back during spring training seem kind of pointless in retrospect, doesn’t it?

The New and Improved Craig says:

The timing of these injuries is very strange. Casilla get’s injured just as Everett is to be designated for assignment. Everett is injured just as Casilla is about due to return.

Punto haters can rejoice, as soon as Casilla returns, Punto is your everyday SS. Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahah

An examination of any of our discussions in retrospect would probably not bring to mind the Algonquin Hotel Round Table.

Couldn’t blog-watch tonight. So forgive me if this has been covered.

Blackie gave up a HR on the 2nd pitch of the game to the Yanks’ Damon, and the game was lost by 1 run.

Same thing happens tonight. What pitch of the game was it?

If neither of these similar HRs had happened, Blackie could easily be 11-5 for the season.

He’s a good pitcher and had an excellent game.

The idea with sending the bat down was to get the help now while buying time to to figure out the next move - though that may have been a little vague in my initial post.

I must admit, I’m a little shaky on the rules when it comes to naming your post season roster. It was only a few days ago that someone pointed out that the teams have to name the roster at the end of this month (I always thought it was quite a bit later).

Most teams seem to drop at least one starter and add a bat for pinch hitting duties. Because a post season roster might be a little different than the regular season roster, my impression has always been that a team doesn’t have to have the player up with the club in the current roster to put them on the post season roster.

If that were true, then a short term 13 man pitching staff would still be worth doing. The team still could put anybody they wanted on the post season roster regardless of who they had playing at the time.

sploorp,

“Players must be on a team’s 25-man roster as of August 31 to be eligible for post-season play. The only exception is that a player on the 60-day disabled list may be replaced by another player from the team’s 40-man roster (as of August 31) who plays the same position.”

From Major League Baseball Transactions.

Pat Neshek is the only Twin on the 60 day DL. He could be replaced on the Twins playoff roster by another pitcher on the Twins 40-man roster.
Otherwise we need a 60-day-DL injury to a position player to occur by August 31, in order to add another position player (Cuddyer?, Tolbert?) for the (possible) playoffs.

Ben W. says:

It wasn’t just Delmon’s sloppy play in the field. He was absolutely feeble at the plate. It’s like every pitch looks good to him - especially the first one he sees.

It’s funny how a change of scenery can be so beneficial. Bet the Tribe aren’t too happy they let Breslow get snatched by the Twins.

Bet the Tribe are even less happy with their prize LaPorta from the CC trade walking around woozy right now in Beijing. Wow, saw the highlights of that game in the past hour and with all the beanballs and MMA type crashes at the plate, any MLBer would have been proud to be part of that game! :)

Only thing though, the benches didn’t clear, so it had to be the Olympics. Terry Tiffee having an MVP performance in the first games so far.
