Tuesday pregame: Twins/Mariners

Posted on August 26th, 2008 – 5:58 PM
By Joe Christensen

SEATTLE — I’m going to post the lineups quick and hit you with any updates later.

Joe Mauer is starting a fifth straight game at catcher, even with the Twins facing a lefthander in Ryan Rowland-Smith. Mauer is 3-for-4 against Rowland Smith with a home run and two RBI.

Guessing Mike Redmond will catch Wednesday afternoon’s series finale when the Twins face lefty Ryan Feierabend.

Update (9:45 p.m.): As you’ve probably heard, that is indeed the plan with Mauer and Redmond. Apologies, I’ve been writing about replay, etc., for our early editions.

No other big news to report.

Twins (74-57)

1. Denard Span, RF

2. Alexi Casilla, 2B

3. Joe Mauer, C

4. Justin Morneau, 1B

5. Randy Ruiz, DH

6. Delmon Young, LF

7. Brendan Harris, 3B

8. Nick Punto, SS

9. Carlos Gomez, CF

Starting pitcher: RH Scott Baker

Mariners (49-82)

1. Ichiro Suzuki, RF

2. Jeremy Reed, CF

3. Adrian Beltre, 3B

4. Raul Ibanez, LF

5. Jose Lopez, DH

6. Jeff Clement, C

7. Yuniesky Betancourt, SS

Twins are gonna rock it tonight! They are pissed about the last few losses and it will all come pouring out tonight! 12-4 Twins!!!!

Miss Optimist says:

August 26th, 2008 at 6:20 pm

Holy crap! Brendan Harris is still on the team!

JimCrikket says:

August 26th, 2008 at 6:38 pm

Need a big game out of Baker tonight. Really disappointing when you get good set up performances out of your pen and then the stud closer screws the pooch.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 6:43 pm

Nice to see Brendan in the lineup again. Seeing as the O’s currently look over matched against the WSox tonight, I hope the Twins can shake out of this losing streak in a big way tonight. Twins are 5-2 after losing three straight games this year, scoring an average of 5.1 runs.

JA says:

August 26th, 2008 at 6:53 pm

Big one tonight. Look for the Twins to bust out. I like that 12-4 prediction.

JD34 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 6:56 pm

Not sure you can blamed the stud closer for last night. If Punto gets an out on the grounder the ending could have been totally different.

And what was with playing for the double play with the tying run on 3rd?

Tyler says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:03 pm

JD34

It was very, very stupid that is what was with that. I couldnt believe they planned to do that. They would have beaten the run home by fifteen feet and maybe even could have turned two at first. Very stupid with Nathan on the mound.

Nat says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

It appeared to me that they had no play on the guy going home, but that is debatable. It would be utterly insane to allow the tying run to score if it could be avoided. I do not think they intentionally allowed the run to score.

I like this lineup, and Baker’s coming off a fantastic start. Let’s go Twins!

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:11 pm

This is irrelevant, but Denard Span is leading all rookies with 5 triples this year.

thrylos98 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:15 pm

meloves Randy in the 5 hole

vikson says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:31 pm

5 triples is not irrelevant. Baker seems to be the forgotten name in all the pitcher talk, personally I rate him the best on the staff, he has done what you want a young pitcher to do, get better each year. You gotta believe Morneau is due for a big game.

How come Punto gets to start but Buscher got buried on the bench the other day. Gomez should be on the pine also for his play in Anaheim.

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:49 pm

Mack,

Buscher’s not starting because the last time he got a hit off a left-handed pitcher, he was in Little League.

Strangely enough, his defense doesn’t seem to have improved since…

thrylos98 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

Butcher is lucky that he was the one to be with the big team instead of Lamb at this point…

and, John Q, yeah, Randy is the man

Twins might want Kenny Rodgers… dunno if i like that

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 7:57 pm

The Twins lead the AL in IBB with 43

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:10 pm

Shawn,

Where on Earth did you see that? And how can that possibly even be a thought for the Twins? Ugh…

Shawn in Binghamton says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:12 pm

from rumors on espn.com

not always the most reliable:

The Yankees did not place a claim on Kenny Rogers before Tuesday’s waiver wire deadline. Rogers was placed on trade waivers Friday, ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney reports.

Among American League contenders, the Red Sox would be next in line to try to work out a deal with the Tigers if they claimed Rogers. The Red Sox have had internal conversations about adding a starting pitcher, particularly with concerns over Josh Beckett’s injury and the struggles of Clay Buchholz.

Also, the Twins could be in line. The Twins recently tried to acquire Jarrod Washburn through waivers but couldn’t work out deal, and their plan had been to put Washburn in the rotation and then move another of their starters into the beleaguered bullpen.

Rogers has pitched effectively for Minnesota in 2003.

This season, Rodgers has a 9-11 record with 5.09 ERA, 76 strikeouts and 67 walks in 161 innings.

thrylos98 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:15 pm

thrylos,

you made a new friend

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:19 pm

I’d go with Boof over Kenny too.

If we’re gonna have a crappy starter, it may as well be someone who’s already on our team that we don’t have to pay money/give anything up for.

And hey, at least Boof won’t cheat in the postseason… :)

romer says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:21 pm

Haven’t been scouting the blogs lately. Has anyone figured this out yet:

If the Twins had gotten Beltre and just BENCHED HIM, they’d be in 1st place in the Central right now.

Shawn in Binghamton says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:24 pm

romer,

unless we traded Blackburn or Perkins and they beat us in a game or more.

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:26 pm

Ugh, please get the White Sox out of Baltimore…

We really can’t afford to be losing games to a team like the Mariners when the Sox can just demolish teams like they’ve been doing on a routine basis…

On a plus side for the Twins, Nick Swisher left the game with an ankle injury.

I’m not saying I’m glad he’s hurt, I don’t wish ill of players, regardless of what team they’re on, but he’s been swinging a hot bat as of late. I wouldn’t mind the Sox having to lose his bat for awhile… he’s already HRed again tonight.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:34 pm

Swisher fouled a ball off of himself. Me thinks bone chips…

Ben says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:35 pm

me thinks your a loser

the Dragon says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:36 pm

Key to tonights game.

Ration the scoring. Baker is lights out pitching with 0,1 or 2 runs. With that we are likely to get a 7,8 or 9 inning super performance.

Score 4/5+ runs early, and recent history shows we might get both struggle and 5 or at most 6 innings.

Regards,

Ben says:

August 26th, 2008 at 8:38 pm

I just do not know what is more annoying. Gatty saying “me thinks” trying to be cute or something, or Dragon saying regards every post.

romer says:

I hear you Shawn. But there’s an old adage — everything is for sale for the right price.

My only undying point re Beltre is, Did Smith offer millions in cash and Revere and Scwarzak and ??? for Beltre?

I mean, if you got the cash and you wanna compete for the WS and make a helluva lot of money at the gate……

I would have loved to have gotten Beltre, but if they were asking for one of the starters or Span, i think we’d lose most of the gain for the current year. Add 1 need subtract another. If they could have gotten him for a fair amount on the prospect end, i’d have done it.

What team is going throw a decent bat on the waiver wire at this point. Where do they find these people??

August 26th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

Does anyone else feel like tonight has a little more ooomph in terms of importance? They’ve lost three in a row, they’ve lost 3 of 4 in Seattle for no obvious reason.

Does this feel like this is one of those games that you look back on and say that it was important, a stabilizing night that put the floor level again?

I know that there are still a lot of games left, but leaving tonight 2 back of the B#%ch Sox sounds worse than it probably is. I think they need to kick it into gear and rip off a big wins streak.

I hate to make absolute pronouncements, but this, to me, feels like a really big game. I hope they pour it on and get some confidence.

Ben says:

Steve from Fridley says:

Aside from the last few outings, Crain’s been fine. Even with his rough few weeks, his ERA is still under 4. Besides, he never should have had to pitch in the first place last night. We had that game won, but poor defense and poor managing washed that away.

Let’s hope we’re up by 10 in the 9th tonight and it’s a non-issue.

thrylos98 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:03 pm

yeap… second tour with the Twins… first one he was 46 now he is 51. Few more years till he collects social security. BS should go for it ;)

coach wheels says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:04 pm

Anyone tell me why Brendan Harris has become invisbile on this team? 3rd, short, wherever, just get his bat in the lineup and let him hit. He is so much better than “Butcher” at 3rd and at least he can throw from short which is way more than we can say for “Ever rest”. Let him and Punto have the left side of the infield.

thrylos98 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:05 pm

Crain is fine… Gardy is not for putting him in a lose-lose situation after he was pounded the day before in Aneheim…

Steve from Fridley says:

I’d have taken a flyer on Orosco over Brian Bass.

Tyler says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Wheels

Agreed. Busher’s defense is such a liability that he has no shot at being a starting 3B of the future. He has a pretty decent bat on him though. Buscher should have the job of lamb now and spell Morneau out now and then, and pinch hit to hit righties. Thats about all i would use buscher for in my opinion.

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:34 pm

Span may get some 3rd place votes, but unless he misses the rest of the season with his wrist injury, it’s going to be Evan Longoria.

And really, Span doesn’t deserve many. Longoria, Alexei Ramirez, Armando Galarraga, and David Murphy should all be in line ahead of him without question. You could even make a case for Blackburn over him, as well as Mike Aviles in KC… there’s more too I’m sure, those are all just off the top of my head.

Span’s in the top 10 of AL rookies, but doesn’t belong near the top of the list.

T says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:37 pm

Okay, I wouldn’t have as much a problem with this whole “change the rules midseason” thing with replay.

But they’re going to “experiment” in a handful of series instead of going league wide all at once.

Yeah. That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. So we’re going to get blown class impacting some games and not others.

I think I would be a BIT more supportive if they introduced it during ST next season. Instead of testing it in the middle of a friggin’ pennant race.

It’d be like adding a fourth strike, but only doing it in a handful of ball clubs.

In September.

Willie Norwood says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:44 pm

Well it is clear that my presence is jinxing the boys and so I’m off to do something else in order to take one for the team.

I leave with this question for the brain wizards here… how does this team suck so badly away from the Dome? Chicago goes through the M’s like Sherman through Atlanta and we look like the mid-90’s Twins.

It would help if they get their head out of their derrieres or they’ll be looking a 5 game or more deficit by 9/5.

This trip looks like Waterloo so far. They may be sellers by 8/31.

I remain puzzled by their Jekyll/Hyde act.

At any rate, maybe I’ll wake up in the middle of the night, check the internet and continue to be disappointed. I just don’t get the Mariner vexing.

romer says:

Tyler says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:45 pm

tim olson says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:46 pm

too bad. The Twins have no guarantee that ‘next year’ would be better for them or the year after that. they are on the doorstep this year but are slowly blowing it! They had a chance to grab the reins and go, instead they are drifting along in a calm sea. Here’s betting they slowly fade away.

romer says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:47 pm

No, don’t leave, Willie. This’ll take care of it.

Rowland-Smith has his no-hitter going.

Willie Norwood,
“how does this team suck so badly away from the Dome?”

Veterans are less affected by the road environment. Young players who are experiencing new, unfamiliar situations on road trips are more affected by the road environment.

IMO,
The problem is youth and the solution is experience.

Willie Norwood says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:52 pm

romer,

It’s going to take a little more effort.

Span hasn’t hit a HR in a while.

Best hitter in baseball fails twice. No runs for the Twins.

Tyler says:

August 26th, 2008 at 9:59 pm

“Gomez batting .304 in the 9 hole. I knew he was doing better, but i didnt think by that much.”

You mean that Gomez did NOT suffer the nervous breakdown that Gardy feared and that delayed the Gomez/Span 9-hole/leadoff flip-flop?
Whodathunkit?

Oh, yeah!
That’s right.
EVERYONE on the blog figured that out ahead of Gardy.

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:01 pm

Man, this is a sad-looking team right now.

How about another closed-door meeting Ron? Maybe get fired up a little bit and actually get a bit angry? Nah…

Nice job erasing the error. Great inning, Scotty!

gatty790 says:

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:03 pm

Calling it, HR by Morneau on a curve ball.

Not Terry Ryan says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

well, it’s a double, not a HR

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

He smoked that curve, but he got over the top. Dang.

Tyler says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

Any chance Morneau gets 30 HR this year?

Ben - The Original says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:04 pm

That is what we needed out of Morneau. C’mon Ruiz you have to be better than the first AB.

Ben - The Original says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

Terrible AB by Ruiz, didn’t even get him over to third.

Tyler says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

where is the Ruiz power I read about in Rochester, and constantly brought up by Coomer and others on FSN??

romer says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:05 pm

What’s Morneau hitting, like .380 the last 10 days?

God I’m still pissed about not emptying the bank for Beltre.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:06 pm

August 26th, 2008 at 10:07 pm

Pathetic, leadoff double and no runs.

gatty790 says:

two OK AB’s by Harris tonight, but no cigar.

Steve from Fridley says:

Nice! Another downright pathetic inning against a crappy pitcher.

Go Twins.

Ben - The Original says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

romer, just out of curiosity, how was the last AB by Harris an ok AB?

p says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:09 pm

We look like the Washington Nationals, ugggggggggggggggggggggggggggggh

sane says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:10 pm

Willie,
The difference is that Hickory High School was playing against other 17-yr-olds, who were also wetting their Levis at the Butler University Fieldhouse.

IMO, the Twins problem is that their opposition is experienced and comfortable in their surroundings.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:11 pm

This feels like the 8 inning loss by Blackburn a week ago

Willie Norwood says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:12 pm

I think it’s official: The Twins are in a slump. If Baker can keep it at a 2-0 deficit they may be able to overcome and squeeze a few runs across. My guess is that he’ll give up one/two more and we’ll see the 4th straight loss…call it 4-1 or 4-0. They seem to be pressing and that usually ends at home. That’s 8 games from now.

If they can pull it out tonight I think they’ll be fine. If not…it will be, to paraphrase Jack Buck…”We’ll see you next season.” Playoff teams don’t lose this much to the M’s.

Not Terry Ryan says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:13 pm

I’m sensing another Gardy closed-door session before the game tomorrow

Tx_Ryan says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

The Twins have NO answer for Beltre and Ibanez. Best case scenario is limiting them to singles.

Willie Norwood says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

sane,

Are you serious? South Bend Central had all of those big uglies who played in from of all those big crowds at South Bend Penn, Mishawaka, etc. I kid.

I think the ‘utes have run their string out on this trip. In the immortal words of Rick Pitino…”it was a nice run.”

thrylos98 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

the only pitch that Baker has working for him is the change up… niiiiiiiiiiice

GBG says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

Can we stop the myth about the “Twins being horrible on the road”. Let’s look at some context, shall we?

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/standings?date=20080826&column=roadWinPercent&year=2008&order=true&br=3&type=reg&group=1&st=2

There is only one team in the AL who has a winning record on the road — the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and with a name like that, they don’t know what “home” is!

Heading into tonight’s game, the Twins were tied with the B(&%tch Sox for the best road record in the Central.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:14 pm

I don’t understand why they keep throwing fastballs to Ibanez. He is hitting .304 on fastballs from righties.

romer says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Check my blog post about 6 days ago. I called for a “different look” from our excellently crafted (by Coach Anderson) young 5-core of starters.

Sliders in the dirt. Steady inside brush-backs. A few 95ers from Baker and Blackburn.

romer says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

And from Slowey too.

Daniel1966 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:15 pm

Twins says:

Nice stop harris, wow… please play him more, i want to see what he can do, he was fairly decent last year in TB

Not Terry Ryan says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Ben - The Original says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

No way that Buscher makes that play.

romer says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:16 pm

Harris didn’t get up automatic and throw. Cost him the out.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

When Baker pitched against the red sox in the bases loaded game he hit 96 on three consecutive pitches.

thrylos98 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

with Butcher at 3B that was 2 runs…

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

If Buscher plays at all in the next five days, I’m slashing Ron Gardenhire’s tires.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

I’m not sure even Punto could make that Harris play, I know he could make the throw though.

Not Terry Ryan says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:17 pm

no damage done, let’s all exhale

Willie Norwood says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:19 pm

GBG,

That is great, but the B*&ch Sox have won their last two games on the road. The Twins? Not so much.

When you are near the last month of the season it is, unfortunately, what have you done for me lately. Everything from tonight on is about the games from tonight on. The past means nothing.

thrylos98 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

gatty,

Punto would have made 2 and a half somersaults before he made that throw, just to make sure it is a perfect 10 or at least a webgem

romer says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:20 pm

“romer, just out of curiosity, how was the last AB by Harris an ok AB?”

I meant it literally. Not a good AB. Just an OK AB. Not a feeble attempt. It was a long fly ball….the other way. Pretty good wood.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:21 pm

That was a long way foul

sane says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Steve,
“If Buscher plays at all in the next five days, I’m slashing Ron Gardenhire’s tires.”

If you are going from Fridley to Seattle (or Oakland) to slash Gardy’s tires, keep in mind that he is probably driving a rental.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Two horrible at bats again!

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:22 pm

Wow… could we look MORE pathetic tonight?

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Sane,

Noted. I’ll wait till they come back home. :)

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:23 pm

Shawn in Binghamton says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:24 pm

sane,

GBG says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Willie — since when are two games more important than 160 games?

Ask the Cleveland Indians if the past means nothing. By your criteria, we should crown them world champs.

bassamundo says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

Will the Twins score any more runs before they get back in the dome?

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

If the Twins don’t score and/or the M’s do score within the next two innings, I am going to get my beauty rest.

Steve H says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

This team has some of the wind knocked out of their sails in the last few games and can’t seem to recover. Is the boat sinking, any hope left?

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:25 pm

That’s a great idea, Shawn! :)

I’ll be back in 30 minutes, guys……

sane says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:27 pm

shawn,
“maybe he is going to Little Canada to catch Gardy’s car at home… only a few min drive.”

You are right!
The only problem with slashing Gardy’s tires at his home, is that Steve would have to wait in line for his turn.

Willie Norwood says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:29 pm

Last I checked the Indians were in the rear view mirror. Last year meant nothing to this year.

Two games is not what I was referencing…what is important is THIS game. The past, which is nothing you can do about, yielded a team one game out going into THIS game. That is what counts now, even more than a game in April because the team is in the race facing diminishing games with many on the road.

Showing stats from two months or two weeks ago has no bearing on tonight’s game. It doesn’t matter what the Twins did relative to anyone to this point this year. Only tonight and the future matter for a playoff berth.

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Sane,

No problem. I’ll just TP his house or something while I wait… it’ll be a nice flashback to when I was 16 or so… :)

romer says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:30 pm

Actually, Willie, don’t pop that beer.

There. I’m off the hook.

Only 1 or 2 games out after tonight’s game.

Ugh, Delmon…

GBG says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

Exactly, gatty — we apparently now live in an alternate universe where our pasts don’t matter. Wins and losses in April don’t matter. Cleveland’s dive in the first four months of the season doesn’t matter — or wait, maybe it does, because they’re “in the rear view mirror”. How did they get there if those games didn’t matter? What matters now is the future. Tonight. The now. The moment. God, I’m going to sound like Barack Obama pretty soon!

My moment is to ignore this drivel, since I know now that Ruiz’s home run doesn’t matter, because it didn’t happen right now. It happened in the past. Those two runs that the Mariners scored were so long ago — all that matters is the ninth inning in a game that hasn’t been played yet. So simple.

Willie Norwood says:

August 26th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

GBG,

pardon me I thought you were referring to last year and the Indians. Could you refine the point you were making?

I was trying to say that tonight what the White Sox or Twins did on the road was meaningless because the fact is that the Twins were one game out. Going back showing the Twins were relatively good compared to other teams by showing their road record means nothing because the results yielded that.

I must have misunderstood your Cleveland comment since I assumed you were referring to last year’s one pitch away from the WS. What was your point?

Specifically I am talking about Buscher at third, Harris, and shortstop, and Casilla at second? Did the Twins not like winning or what? This is frustrating, but the Mariners are not as bad a team as thier record indicates. As you would expect of a team with a $115 million payroll, they actually do have a decent player or two. It’s not always who you play but when you play them. It would have been far better to play them in June/July when they were busy tanking, and not when they seem intent on stepping it up, at least at home.

You mean like the first time the Twins played them, howeda? When they had lost something like 15 of 18 coming in to that series?

LNP to finish it off… Tomorrow’s game is in some serious needs of anti-depressants. Hung over from last night’s walk-off, a mere 6 hits came tonight, nothing past 2nd base. The road trip blues are playing.

romer says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:41 pm

If the Twins get 10 more HR’s total from Young and Ruiz the rest of the way — especially if they come in critical spots — they have a chance at the pennant.

howeda says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

Great job Nick.

Looks like business as usual on the Twins bench. You think Gardy might have said something after yesterday’s sluggish game. Nope.

thrylos98 says:

Steve,
that is Gardy managing… he never PH for Punto…

2 games back…2-4 at the beginning of the road trip….Crash and burn….

MIghty Casey says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

forget hitting for punto, why did kubel not hit for ruiz?!?!

Tx_Ryan says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

The hitting has been awful, but every once in a while you need to be able to win a game 1-0 or 2-1. Twins just don’t have that type of pitcher right now. Tomorrow’s starter for Seattle is 0-1 7.88–would think they could salvage one game.

romer says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:46 pm

“If the Twins get 10 more HR’s total from Young and Ruiz the rest of the way — especially if they come in critical spots — they have a chance at the pennant.”

I take that back. Ruiz’s HR’s will only come instead of Kubel’s as he replaces Kubel at DH. Now, if Kubel were to play every day in RF, we’d truly have that extra RH power bat everyone wanted all season, and an increase in power in the lineup.

BTW, who is the 3rd catcher now?

arschlach says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

I never have a confident feeling when Punto comes to the plate in any clutch situation. Always got that nervous feeling after last year … nervous like watching golf ball size hail fall out my window

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:47 pm

Worst pitching staff in the league made a mockery of our hitters yesterday and today. I would not be surprised if the Twins are swept tomorrow. They better have a hell of a series in Oakland because the Twins will lose at least two in Toronto. Twins are playing like the Vikings right now, build you up to let you down.

Chicago Twins Fan says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

We have only played one more home game than the white sox and we still play them three times at home. All hope is not lost!

Not Terry Ryan says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:48 pm

romer…i think the 3rd catcher is Morneau

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

Literally the only reason Buscher is on this team is because he’s hit RHP well with men on base.

What a horrible decision by Gardenhire. Let Punto - who’s hitting 60 points lower versus RHP than LHP - bat with the game on the line.

That’s two horrible decisions in the 9th inning so far this road trip by Gardy, and both could very well have cost us the game.

Unless they had a lefty warmed up in the pen, and I missed them say that, there’s no excuse for letting Punto hit there over Buscher.

If Buscher only singles and it comes down to Gomez, well that’s fine, at least the game got that far, and good luck Carlos. Punto can’t be allowed to hit there. Stupid, stupid, stupid.

Mike says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

Don’t be so hard on Ruiz, guys. He got the only RBIs of the game…

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:51 pm

No one was warming in the pen for Seattle

Steve from Fridley says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

No one was up in the ‘pen for Seattle… and no one was up in Gardy’s old senile head then either.

Buscher is batting .350 against RHP and has an .864 OPS.

Man, that’s terrible. I’d like to hear Gardenhire’s explanation on that one.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:56 pm

Gardy will probably just brush this loss off as a tough game a against a scrappy team that just happens to be the worst team in the AL by a wide margin.

gatty790 says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:59 pm

The worst pitching team in the entire league is pitching good. BS, Ron.

Steve H says:

August 26th, 2008 at 11:59 pm

Stick a fork in them, they’re DONE!
I know, it’s just one game, they will get them back tomorrow. Well how many days have we been thinking that? It’s slowly starting to slip away and they can’t hope for the wildcard, isn’t going to happen. They need to catch the Whities and win the Central, the only route to the playoffs. Maybe they have over achieved too much and now it’s starting to show. Didn’t try to improve the team for a playoff push and reality is setting in - they are not a playoff team!

gatty790 says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:00 am

The wild card is out of the picture because the red sox play 20 of their last 29 at home. Not gonna happen…

romer says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:01 am

Oh yeah, Morneau is backup catcher. Thanks Not Terry Ryan.

And speaking of “fisted”, had my physical today with a little procto action. The annual humility, ya know.

So no, don’t like “fisted” either.

Steve H says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:03 am

Why the bleep do they let LNP bat in that situation? Something wrong with Buscher pinch hitting? Gardy needs to get his head out of his butt, four in a row now, it’s slipping away! Maybe it’s not his head, but someone elses (any guesses?)

USAFChief says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:03 am

My guess is Gardy was saving Butcher to p/h for Gomez.

Tough call, but the truth is I’d probably rather bat Punto/Butcher than Butcher/Gomez.

Carlos gets a little excited in big situations with men on base, in my opinion anyway.

Either way, as with last night, a couple people in the regular lineup just plain gotta get it done somewhere along the game. That’s 2 games in a row of 2 runs against a pretty bad pitching staff.

One thing that I’d like to see is Mauer be more aggressive in RBI situations. He’s down in the count 0-1, 1-2 almost every time because he refuses to swing the bat, and every pitcher knows it. He’s the 3 hitter for pete’s sake. Pick your spots and look for a pitch to turn on. Walks are nice. RBIs are better. A few less walks and a few more balls in the gap with runners on will win more games.

romer says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:04 am

That’s why I was tough on Jimmy Bee earlier.

howeda says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:09 am

Steve F…if they pinch hit Buscher for Punto (and he’s only marginally more likely to get a hit) then they simply pinch around him and pitch to Gomez, who’s hopeless with guys on base in this type of situation. So you’re either left PH’ing Redmond and having a huge mess on defense or leaving to Gomez with two on, two out. I’ll take my chances with Punto and having Busher available to PH for Gomez if it gets that far.

Steve H says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:10 am

Mauer should be looking to hit on the second pitch, pitchers know he is going to usually look at a few and know they can get him to 0-2 like Chief says

Steve H says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:14 am

howeda, if Buscher comes in and gets a big hit and can score Everett (the pinch runner) it’s a tie and they take there chances to go to extra innings. I don’t trust Punto in that situation, it looked like he was trying to swing for the fence instead of just trying to get a hit.

romer says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:14 am

So —

No Kubel starting.
No hit and run with Casilla on 1st.
No PH appearances by Redmond and Buscher, two good pinch hitters.

Gotta point the finger at Gardy on this one (not GIVE the finger).

Mr. Gardenhire, the rest of the season is up to you. Some things looked a little sleepy tonight.

And MVP, use your head and get an RBI walk, man. Gardy has three good pinch hitters on the bench if he doesn’t want to use Ruiz.

The positive note —

Guerrier looked terrific. 93 mph FB. Very sharp-breaking stuff. Eddie G’s got him out of his mental slump. He knows he doesn’t have to do the plantation work anymore.

G’night.

Steve H says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:18 am

Baker didn’t look real sharp again, left too many pitches up, but had some good defense behind him to limit the damage. As usual his teammates don’t get him enough run support, I hope Perkins is up to the challenge on Wednesday.

Daniel1966 says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:20 am

This team, unfortunately, is youthful and, like someone voiced earlier, over-achieving to date. They are playing tight and sloppy in the field and the M’s are loosy-goosy(sp?). Fundamentally, they are poorly schooled and, as a group, appear to be neither particularly bright nor aggressive. It was interesting to hear Hunter’s almost appalled reaction to the term “loose cannons”. Great way to not build confidence in young players is my read of his statements. An observation…

Nora says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:25 am

If anything the team is over-aggressive at times. Base running comes to mind.

AgateHunter'swife says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:26 am

The radio guys just said that if the Angles win tomorrow or the Mariers loose, the Mariners are elemenated mathamatically from being in the play-offs. (as if they had a chance at this point)

I will be at the game tomorrow. Hope for a win.

howeda says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:29 am

Steve H, point is that if you use Buscher to PH for Punto, they’re going to pitch around him to get to Gomez, who’s a complete black hole with guys on base and two outs.

Daniel1966 says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:39 am

Ms. Nora, I appreciate your point. I think sane said it properly when he referred to aggressive stupid vs bright (or something to that note). Running against the odds isn’t aggressive, it is misspent emotion that kills rallies and loses close games. Unfortunately, even after 3/4 of a season, our people are making many of the same mistakes repeatedly.

AgateHunter'swife says:

August 27th, 2008 at 12:45 am

I should have said a Twins win.

MIghty Casey says:

August 27th, 2008 at 1:21 am

letting ruiz hit in the 9th was stupid. letting ruiz hit behind morneau was even stupider.

think about it… ruiz had 3 horrible at-bats tonight. struck out on 3 pitches leading of the 2nd, failed to move morneau over after he led off with a double, then promptly grounded out the first pitch he saw to lead off the ninth.

let kubel lead off the 9th!

and as far as not hitting for punto… 2 reasons to defend gardy here:

1. buscher was being saved for gomez. gomez would have been worthless in that situation.

2. if memory serves punto has come up with more than one extra base hit while trailing in the ninth. i don’t think the twins won those games, probably why nobody remembers?

MIghty Casey says:

August 27th, 2008 at 1:25 am

i know the hope/strategy was for kubel to come up with somebody to knock in, but i think letting kubel lead off leads it open for buscher to hit later, and take his AVG vs righties with RISP and take your chances there.

hindsight is 20/20. twins laid a big one tonight though. mauer and morneau should stay in the hotel and rest tomorrow… they need a break! mauer has had two of the worst days at the plate i’ve ever seen him have.

T says:

August 27th, 2008 at 7:31 am

Why the bleep do they let LNP bat in that situation?

Your buddy Nick Punto had two doubles in two ABs against K-Rod during the Anahiem series if I’m not mistake.

The rest of the lineup promptly failed to drive him in.

bufftwins says:

August 27th, 2008 at 9:58 am

Ruiz is good, but it’s pretty tough going into September when your number 5 hole hitter is a Triple A call up with 5 rbi’s heading into the game.
