Tuesday pregame: Twins/Mariners
Posted on August 26th, 2008 – 5:58 PMBy Joe Christensen
SEATTLE — I’m going to post the lineups quick and hit you with any updates later.
Joe Mauer is starting a fifth straight game at catcher, even with the Twins facing a lefthander in Ryan Rowland-Smith. Mauer is 3-for-4 against Rowland Smith with a home run and two RBI.
Guessing Mike Redmond will catch Wednesday afternoon’s series finale when the Twins face lefty Ryan Feierabend.
Update (9:45 p.m.): As you’ve probably heard, that is indeed the plan with Mauer and Redmond. Apologies, I’ve been writing about replay, etc., for our early editions.
No other big news to report.

1. Denard Span, RF
2. Alexi Casilla, 2B
3. Joe Mauer, C
4. Justin Morneau, 1B
5. Randy Ruiz, DH
6. Delmon Young, LF
7. Brendan Harris, 3B
8. Nick Punto, SS

Twins are gonna rock it tonight! They are pissed about the last few losses and it will all come pouring out tonight! 12-4 Twins!!!!
Holy crap! Brendan Harris is still on the team!

Need a big game out of Baker tonight. Really disappointing when you get good set up performances out of your pen and then the stud closer screws the pooch.
Nice to see Brendan in the lineup again. Seeing as the O’s currently look over matched against the WSox tonight, I hope the Twins can shake out of this losing streak in a big way tonight. Twins are 5-2 after losing three straight games this year, scoring an average of 5.1 runs.
Big one tonight. Look for the Twins to bust out. I like that 12-4 prediction.
Not sure you can blamed the stud closer for last night. If Punto gets an out on the grounder the ending could have been totally different.
And what was with playing for the double play with the tying run on 3rd?
JD34
It was very, very stupid that is what was with that. I couldnt believe they planned to do that. They would have beaten the run home by fifteen feet and maybe even could have turned two at first. Very stupid with Nathan on the mound.
It appeared to me that they had no play on the guy going home, but that is debatable. It would be utterly insane to allow the tying run to score if it could be avoided. I do not think they intentionally allowed the run to score.
I like this lineup, and Baker’s coming off a fantastic start. Let’s go Twins!
This is irrelevant, but Denard Span is leading all rookies with 5 triples this year.
meloves Randy in the 5 hole
5 triples is not irrelevant. Baker seems to be the forgotten name in all the pitcher talk, personally I rate him the best on the staff, he has done what you want a young pitcher to do, get better each year. You gotta believe Morneau is due for a big game.
Cleveland is in the process of jumping ahead of Detroit in the standings.
thtylos98.
You makin me crazy.
so LNP makes a little league blunder to cost the victory last night and Gardy still starts him the next night!?!?!?!!
Harris goes 2 - 4 with 2 doubles and the FBI has to do a hard target search to locate him for days !!!
that post from “f” was me.. I got excited and hit return key too fast
How come Punto gets to start but Buscher got buried on the bench the other day. Gomez should be on the pine also for his play in Anaheim.
Mack,
Buscher’s not starting because the last time he got a hit off a left-handed pitcher, he was in Little League.
Strangely enough, his defense doesn’t seem to have improved since…
Butcher is lucky that he was the one to be with the big team instead of Lamb at this point…
and, John Q, yeah, Randy is the man
Twins might want Kenny Rodgers… dunno if i like that
The Twins lead the AL in IBB with 43
Shawn,
Where on Earth did you see that? And how can that possibly even be a thought for the Twins? Ugh…
from rumors on espn.com
not always the most reliable:
The Yankees did not place a claim on Kenny Rogers before Tuesday’s waiver wire deadline. Rogers was placed on trade waivers Friday, ESPN The Magazine’s Buster Olney reports.
Among American League contenders, the Red Sox would be next in line to try to work out a deal with the Tigers if they claimed Rogers. The Red Sox have had internal conversations about adding a starting pitcher, particularly with concerns over Josh Beckett’s injury and the struggles of Clay Buchholz.
Also, the Twins could be in line. The Twins recently tried to acquire Jarrod Washburn through waivers but couldn’t work out deal, and their plan had been to put Washburn in the rotation and then move another of their starters into the beleaguered bullpen.
Rogers has pitched effectively for Minnesota in 2003.
This season, Rodgers has a 9-11 record with 5.09 ERA, 76 strikeouts and 67 walks in 161 innings.
Kenny Rogers?
hmmm I’d rather have Boof starting
thrylos98
dumber than bricks.
You and Stevie Wonder.
thrylos,
you made a new friend
I’d go with Boof over Kenny too.
If we’re gonna have a crappy starter, it may as well be someone who’s already on our team that we don’t have to pay money/give anything up for.
And hey, at least Boof won’t cheat in the postseason… ![]()
Haven’t been scouting the blogs lately. Has anyone figured this out yet:
If the Twins had gotten Beltre and just BENCHED HIM, they’d be in 1st place in the Central right now.
romer,
unless we traded Blackburn or Perkins and they beat us in a game or more.
Ugh, please get the White Sox out of Baltimore…
We really can’t afford to be losing games to a team like the Mariners when the Sox can just demolish teams like they’ve been doing on a routine basis…
On a plus side for the Twins, Nick Swisher left the game with an ankle injury.
I’m not saying I’m glad he’s hurt, I don’t wish ill of players, regardless of what team they’re on, but he’s been swinging a hot bat as of late. I wouldn’t mind the Sox having to lose his bat for awhile… he’s already HRed again tonight.
Swisher fouled a ball off of himself. Me thinks bone chips…
me thinks your a loser
Key to tonights game.
Ration the scoring. Baker is lights out pitching with 0,1 or 2 runs. With that we are likely to get a 7,8 or 9 inning super performance.
Score 4/5+ runs early, and recent history shows we might get both struggle and 5 or at most 6 innings.
Regards,
I just do not know what is more annoying. Gatty saying “me thinks” trying to be cute or something, or Dragon saying regards every post.
On the way home heard Revere was named MVP and top prospect in Midwest League. Also, Hamburger, rookie-league pitcher traded for Eddie, was assigned to Texas’ Midwest League team.
I hear you Shawn. But there’s an old adage — everything is for sale for the right price.
My only undying point re Beltre is, Did Smith offer millions in cash and Revere and Scwarzak and ??? for Beltre?
I mean, if you got the cash and you wanna compete for the WS and make a helluva lot of money at the gate……
Ben,
me thinks you being a dick is the most annoying.
Regards,
Hey, I just saw jimmy bee live on FSN asking “What happened to Lew Ford?”
Small world…….
ah yes 30 minutes before game time and the insults are rolling… we are an orney bunch after a 3 game losing streak aren’t we..
I would have loved to have gotten Beltre, but if they were asking for one of the starters or Span, i think we’d lose most of the gain for the current year. Add 1 need subtract another. If they could have gotten him for a fair amount on the prospect end, i’d have done it.
Well said
Regards,
34 straight starts for Punto. Keep it up Gardy you hypocrite. Looks like Punto does have naked pictures of you bowling at the Park Tavern.
Gardy, please turn in your badge.
yeah Fire, late night losses do that.
Shawn,
it seems like it
my new buddy Johnny Q (or is it Suzy Q?)
Romer
yea i just saw that too, I looked over here to see if anyone else saw that. Thats great about jimmy bee!
“Thats great about jimmy bee!”
Well…..YOU know. jimmy is everywhere.
:)>
i missed jimmy bee on TV, awe, was he wearing a rug?
Was it me or were those questions for Roy Smalley on the pre-game show staged. Who’s the idiot that asks if we’re going to add a right handed bat??? Nice question. Do you know how baseball works? What team is going throw a decent bat on the waiver wire at this point. Where do they find these people??
Romer… I snorted loud enough to wake my neighbors with that comment. And they live acres away.
Shawn, nobody knows what they were asking about Beltre, but Seattle is an Uber dysfunctional club, so you never know
Scott Baker:
Margin > 4 Runs, BA = .351 SLG = .737
Tie Game, BA = .174 SLG = .263
Close and Late, BA = .176 SLG = .294
my crystal ball is telling me jesse crain is gonna blow the game again..jesse is such a sieve
That was jimmy bee? Holy cow! And he asked about Lew Ford. Huh. I could have sworn he could have asked about Anthony’s rug and why it slips to one side or if Roy has to plug his mane in every night to recharge it.
Dang. I wish I knew that was jimmy bee.
Small world.
Jesse won’t be able to pitch tonight.
Jesse Orosco?
hopefully he wont beable to pitch ever again! trade him to the rangers for a hamburger. oh wait..
jesse crain throws the ball as good as jesse ventura is at being govenor..
Orosco isn’t that old, sign him up
Lapanta….We know plenty about Rowland-Smith. He was property of the Twins at one point. Being a Rule 5 pick-up, they scouted the hell out of him in the minors.
Either do your homework or get off the set.
“I snorted loud enough to wake my neighbors…”
With that response from from JT, I’ll lay off the Bee kid.
I’m sure he’d be a kick to goof with and have a beer with. But not really on the blog, if you hear me.
The only thing worse than unabated zany craziness is PROLIFIC unabated zany craziness.
maybe they can sign that 9 year old taht was banned from playing for his little league team cause he throws to fast? what does everyone think? say dfa crain?
Does anyone else feel like tonight has a little more ooomph in terms of importance? They’ve lost three in a row, they’ve lost 3 of 4 in Seattle for no obvious reason.
Does this feel like this is one of those games that you look back on and say that it was important, a stabilizing night that put the floor level again?
I know that there are still a lot of games left, but leaving tonight 2 back of the B#%ch Sox sounds worse than it probably is. I think they need to kick it into gear and rip off a big wins streak.
I hate to make absolute pronouncements, but this, to me, feels like a really big game. I hope they pour it on and get some confidence.
I wish the idiot who tried to impersonate me earlier on this blog would get a life.
Aside from the last few outings, Crain’s been fine. Even with his rough few weeks, his ERA is still under 4. Besides, he never should have had to pitch in the first place last night. We had that game won, but poor defense and poor managing washed that away.
Let’s hope we’re up by 10 in the 9th tonight and it’s a non-issue.
yeap… second tour with the Twins… first one he was 46 now he is 51. Few more years till he collects social security. BS should go for it ![]()
Anyone tell me why Brendan Harris has become invisbile on this team? 3rd, short, wherever, just get his bat in the lineup and let him hit. He is so much better than “Butcher” at 3rd and at least he can throw from short which is way more than we can say for “Ever rest”. Let him and Punto have the left side of the infield.
Crain is fine… Gardy is not for putting him in a lose-lose situation after he was pounded the day before in Aneheim…
I’d have taken a flyer on Orosco over Brian Bass.
Wheels
Agreed. Busher’s defense is such a liability that he has no shot at being a starting 3B of the future. He has a pretty decent bat on him though. Buscher should have the job of lamb now and spell Morneau out now and then, and pinch hit to hit righties. Thats about all i would use buscher for in my opinion.
Nice walk
Gatty I just want you to know that it was not me calling you annoying it was some stupid imposter.
Somebody on here needs to get a life and quit impersonating me.
what evs
we cool man
lets see if justin can get us on the board
Obviously anybody that frequents this board knows that I would not be saying that. Goodbye troll, leave the board.
and he can’t
nope
and he can’t, not a good start for the twins in a must win situations
Situation
Its just the first inning here
Morneau missed that curve, but he is batting .324 against curves from lefties this year…
First two Twins hitters showing “leadoff” type of AB. Of course M&M just happened to not come through this time.
Next time….
Man that one fastball was really close
Wow
Beat him by ten feet
Beltre must have missed a hit and run sign there.
Wow, that was a spectacular catch
Wow x2
What a catch
Nice wheels by Span out there.
Stop impostering me!!!
Span the man
Go away troll. Please.
That was an ugly at bat
Ruiz that was a horrible AB.
I think Span will get some rookie of the year votes with his performances even with his lack of MLB games. Unless if there is some sort of rule that I am not aware of that says you cant recieve votes in limited amounts of games played? Anyone now?
i forgot the K, know?
I think they need a bunch of bunt to get this guy out of his rhythm. He seems to be just rocking and tossing….move him a bit.
Once again our hitters turn mediocrity into luminaries.
Come on Delmon
So close…
bummer, that would have stuck it to Gardy!
How close?
warning track
Span may get some 3rd place votes, but unless he misses the rest of the season with his wrist injury, it’s going to be Evan Longoria.
And really, Span doesn’t deserve many. Longoria, Alexei Ramirez, Armando Galarraga, and David Murphy should all be in line ahead of him without question. You could even make a case for Blackburn over him, as well as Mike Aviles in KC… there’s more too I’m sure, those are all just off the top of my head.
Span’s in the top 10 of AL rookies, but doesn’t belong near the top of the list.
I like wood.
That’s Brendan’s problem. You know he hit that within 3 feet of being a HR just so he didn’t have to hustle down the line on a ground ball. He’s lazy. Doesn’t like to get after it.
Well said Steve, well said
Lead off walks kill. Wow, the impersonator of me, come up with something a little more intelligent before you post next time. Troll go away.
Okay, I wouldn’t have as much a problem with this whole “change the rules midseason” thing with replay.
But they’re going to “experiment” in a handful of series instead of going league wide all at once.
Yeah. That’s the stupidest thing I’ve ever heard. So we’re going to get blown class impacting some games and not others.
I think I would be a BIT more supportive if they introduced it during ST next season. Instead of testing it in the middle of a friggin’ pennant race.
It’d be like adding a fourth strike, but only doing it in a handful of ball clubs.
In September.
Baker seems to be imploding for no reason…
Can we ever get Raul Lbanez out
Ducks on the pond
Come on Baker, we need a win tonight.
I love my wife, but recently she has gotten very lazy or as she describes it pregnant.
Hopefully someone bans you guys who are acting like fools
Get a life man.
oh no
Great
el poopo
Wow
Baker, step it up.
Ben, I bet I could land in five guesses who’s impersonating you. Especially with how things were going during last nights game.
It did get interesting yesterday
what’s wrong with Baker? something must be
Ben —
Use ALL CAPS and get Joe C’s attention….or his blog babysitter’s.
The rest of us have already gotten the word that you’re being spoofed.
Yeah exactly, why doesn’t that surprise me? I guess it just goes to show the immaturity of some people.
How many days rest has he had?
That was a nice throw by Punto
Hey Casilla, that is how you throw back to first to get a runner out on a delayed steal.
Not a good time for any of our starters to have problems. Twins already have enough in the BP. *sigh*
Good, looks like I can go to bed early tonight
All right Baker, limited damage here.
Well it is clear that my presence is jinxing the boys and so I’m off to do something else in order to take one for the team.
I leave with this question for the brain wizards here… how does this team suck so badly away from the Dome? Chicago goes through the M’s like Sherman through Atlanta and we look like the mid-90’s Twins.
It would help if they get their head out of their derrieres or they’ll be looking a 5 game or more deficit by 9/5.
This trip looks like Waterloo so far. They may be sellers by 8/31.
I remain puzzled by their Jekyll/Hyde act.
At any rate, maybe I’ll wake up in the middle of the night, check the internet and continue to be disappointed. I just don’t get the Mariner vexing.
Well, at least Baker has gotten 5 outs now.
There ya go
too bad. The Twins have no guarantee that ‘next year’ would be better for them or the year after that. they are on the doorstep this year but are slowly blowing it! They had a chance to grab the reins and go, instead they are drifting along in a calm sea. Here’s betting they slowly fade away.
No, don’t leave, Willie. This’ll take care of it.
Rowland-Smith has his no-hitter going.
We pitch and hit scared versus the Seafarers. We have to go for the jugular.
worked like a charm…
See!?? Willie???
PUNTA!!!
There you go Punto, time for Gomez to do something.
Way to battle Nicky. Now don’t give the out away on the basepaths for once.
Well done Romer
Im like you I got hobbies. Things I like, me I like wood. I like to lick it, squeeze it, go ahead put it on my tombstone “he liked wood”
My eyes must deceive me, Gomez not bunting because it was a bad pitch…
way to advance the runner gomez
Willie Norwood,
“how does this team suck so badly away from the Dome?”
Veterans are less affected by the road environment. Young players who are experiencing new, unfamiliar situations on road trips are more affected by the road environment.
IMO,
The problem is youth and the solution is experience.
romer,
It’s going to take a little more effort.
Span hasn’t hit a HR in a while.
“Dang. I wish I knew that was jimmy bee.
Small world.”
Actually, I think it was Jimmy Bee’s supervisor.
Denard Span = Alfonso Ribeiro (Carlton from the Fresh Prince of Bel Air):
http://www.espacioblog.com/myfiles/laguarde/carleton_banks.jpg
Just for fun. ![]()
Span has a really good eye, a lot of those pitches were close
we need to score here
Casilla hasn’t driven one down the left field line in a while.
An interesting stat by Bert for once. Gomez batting .304 in the 9 hole. I knew he was doing better, but i didnt think by that much.
JOE C, CAN YOU PLEASE BAN THE GUY THAT IS IMPERSONATING ME? THANK YOU!
“…The problem is youth and the solution is experience.”
Right, like in those 2 K AB’s by Ruiz and Yung.
No way, the bases should be loaded. Twice!
Strike 2 was low
Willie, pop a beer.
Casilla walked not once, but twice in that at bat!
Need a big hit from Mauer here. You are due Joe.
I thought Casilla would beat that one out.
Joe is in a must hit situation
It drives me crazy to watch joe take grapefruits right down the middle
god damnit, this team is starting to piss me off
Joe? headfirst? not smart
Mauer quit taking lessons from Punto.
Joe? headfirst? not at all smart
Tim is right about the Twins falling apart
Pound the strike zone early then throw crap. Worked the last week against mauer…
Best hitter in baseball fails twice. No runs for the Twins.
sorry for the duplicate, but to reiterate, Mauer is WAY to important to risk an injury with. Too stupid Joe, cant lose you done the stretch, Punto on the other hand…
AHH
what was that!
This team has reverted back to april
At least 5 games out after the road trip.
I think they’re all thinking about Hillary’s speech.
This too, shall pass.
Well atleast casilla stoped the runner from advancing to second.
whew
“Gomez batting .304 in the 9 hole. I knew he was doing better, but i didnt think by that much.”
You mean that Gomez did NOT suffer the nervous breakdown that Gardy feared and that delayed the Gomez/Span 9-hole/leadoff flip-flop?
Whodathunkit?
Oh, yeah!
That’s right.
EVERYONE on the blog figured that out ahead of Gardy.
Man, this is a sad-looking team right now.
How about another closed-door meeting Ron? Maybe get fired up a little bit and actually get a bit angry? Nah…
Nice job erasing the error. Great inning, Scotty!
Bert didn’t catch that 142 infield hits was a high number out of 172…
sane,
I think Gardy needs to go “Norman Dale” on the boys:
Don’t laugh Dickie. Redmond is a valuable player.
Here we go again for the fourth day in a row, there is a little change though, we aren’t blowing a lead
Oh guess they got out of that
Good job by Baker to recover after the error by Morneau. Can we please get some runs now and quit making Rowland-Smith look like a Cy Young award winner?
Calling it, HR by Morneau on a curve ball.
well, it’s a double, not a HR
He smoked that curve, but he got over the top. Dang.
Any chance Morneau gets 30 HR this year?
That is what we needed out of Morneau. C’mon Ruiz you have to be better than the first AB.
Terrible AB by Ruiz, didn’t even get him over to third.
where is the Ruiz power I read about in Rochester, and constantly brought up by Coomer and others on FSN??
What’s Morneau hitting, like .380 the last 10 days?
God I’m still pissed about not emptying the bank for Beltre.
Calling it, Delmon gets a hit off a change up
Dang, tried one too many times…
We need a home run to tie it
Pathetic, leadoff double and no runs.
Memo to Twins hitters, stop having really bad at bats.
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr
two OK AB’s by Harris tonight, but no cigar.
Nice! Another downright pathetic inning against a crappy pitcher.
Go Twins.
romer, just out of curiosity, how was the last AB by Harris an ok AB?
We look like the Washington Nationals, ugggggggggggggggggggggggggggggh
Willie,
The difference is that Hickory High School was playing against other 17-yr-olds, who were also wetting their Levis at the Butler University Fieldhouse.
IMO, the Twins problem is that their opposition is experienced and comfortable in their surroundings.
This feels like the 8 inning loss by Blackburn a week ago
I think it’s official: The Twins are in a slump. If Baker can keep it at a 2-0 deficit they may be able to overcome and squeeze a few runs across. My guess is that he’ll give up one/two more and we’ll see the 4th straight loss…call it 4-1 or 4-0. They seem to be pressing and that usually ends at home. That’s 8 games from now.
If they can pull it out tonight I think they’ll be fine. If not…it will be, to paraphrase Jack Buck…”We’ll see you next season.” Playoff teams don’t lose this much to the M’s.
I’m sensing another Gardy closed-door session before the game tomorrow
The Twins have NO answer for Beltre and Ibanez. Best case scenario is limiting them to singles.
sane,
Are you serious? South Bend Central had all of those big uglies who played in from of all those big crowds at South Bend Penn, Mishawaka, etc. I kid.
I think the ‘utes have run their string out on this trip. In the immortal words of Rick Pitino…”it was a nice run.”
the only pitch that Baker has working for him is the change up… niiiiiiiiiiice
Can we stop the myth about the “Twins being horrible on the road”. Let’s look at some context, shall we?
There is only one team in the AL who has a winning record on the road — the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, and with a name like that, they don’t know what “home” is!
Heading into tonight’s game, the Twins were tied with the B(&%tch Sox for the best road record in the Central.
I don’t understand why they keep throwing fastballs to Ibanez. He is hitting .304 on fastballs from righties.
Check my blog post about 6 days ago. I called for a “different look” from our excellently crafted (by Coach Anderson) young 5-core of starters.
Sliders in the dirt. Steady inside brush-backs. A few 95ers from Baker and Blackburn.
And from Slowey too.
Think positively…maybe the M’s will get complacent and go dormant against Gardy and his warriors.
Nice stop harris, wow… please play him more, i want to see what he can do, he was fairly decent last year in TB
that saved some runs
No way that Buscher makes that play.
Harris didn’t get up automatic and throw. Cost him the out.
When Baker pitched against the red sox in the bases loaded game he hit 96 on three consecutive pitches.
with Butcher at 3B that was 2 runs…
If Buscher plays at all in the next five days, I’m slashing Ron Gardenhire’s tires.
I’m not sure even Punto could make that Harris play, I know he could make the throw though.
no damage done, let’s all exhale
GBG,
That is great, but the B*&ch Sox have won their last two games on the road. The Twins? Not so much.
When you are near the last month of the season it is, unfortunately, what have you done for me lately. Everything from tonight on is about the games from tonight on. The past means nothing.
gatty,
Punto would have made 2 and a half somersaults before he made that throw, just to make sure it is a perfect 10 or at least a webgem
“romer, just out of curiosity, how was the last AB by Harris an ok AB?”
I meant it literally. Not a good AB. Just an OK AB. Not a feeble attempt. It was a long fly ball….the other way. Pretty good wood.
That was a long way foul
Steve,
“If Buscher plays at all in the next five days, I’m slashing Ron Gardenhire’s tires.”
If you are going from Fridley to Seattle (or Oakland) to slash Gardy’s tires, keep in mind that he is probably driving a rental.
Two horrible at bats again!
Wow… could we look MORE pathetic tonight?
Sane,
Noted. I’ll wait till they come back home. ![]()
Gomez is hitting .346 on fastballs from lefties and he is hitting .467 on sliders from lefties but he is hitting only .181 against the change up…
sane,
maybe he is going to Little Canada to catch Gardy’s car at home… only a few min drive.
Willie — since when are two games more important than 160 games?
Ask the Cleveland Indians if the past means nothing. By your criteria, we should crown them world champs.
Will the Twins score any more runs before they get back in the dome?
If the Twins don’t score and/or the M’s do score within the next two innings, I am going to get my beauty rest.
This team has some of the wind knocked out of their sails in the last few games and can’t seem to recover. Is the boat sinking, any hope left?
That’s a great idea, Shawn!
I’ll be back in 30 minutes, guys……
Thank God it wasn’t deja vu all over again.
Span is cool and collected now.
Did Punto honestly square around to bunt on the 3-1 pitch?
leave Gardy some Busch light to heal the wound, its his beer of choice
or it was 10 years ago
shawn,
“maybe he is going to Little Canada to catch Gardy’s car at home… only a few min drive.”
You are right!
The only problem with slashing Gardy’s tires at his home, is that Steve would have to wait in line for his turn.
Last I checked the Indians were in the rear view mirror. Last year meant nothing to this year.
Two games is not what I was referencing…what is important is THIS game. The past, which is nothing you can do about, yielded a team one game out going into THIS game. That is what counts now, even more than a game in April because the team is in the race facing diminishing games with many on the road.
Showing stats from two months or two weeks ago has no bearing on tonight’s game. It doesn’t matter what the Twins did relative to anyone to this point this year. Only tonight and the future matter for a playoff berth.
Sane,
No problem. I’ll just TP his house or something while I wait… it’ll be a nice flashback to when I was 16 or so… ![]()
Actually, Willie, don’t pop that beer.
There. I’m off the hook.
Even so, I take back my doom and gloom I posted about being 5 games out in a week.
Only 1 or 2 games out after tonight’s game.
Baker qualifies for ERA leaders now.
But by that token, all stats are thus meaningless…
Casilla making a play
thanks fsn i didnt want to see that live anyways
Thanks FSN North for always cutting in after pitch 1
Spark
You are very welcome
Mauer hasn’t hit a dong in a long time.
(I’m really trying here.)
Calling it, Morneau hit on fastball away
That’s a Mauerdong. It’s what he does.
romer,
I think that you’re in a slump also.
That’s five consecutive posts from you where Beltre’s name was never mentioned!
lol
Let’s go Morneau.
OK AB so far from MVP…..
:)>
Well he hit a fastball away…
God damnit justin
well, 1 cheapie run
Damn, that is a buzzkill.
Ruiz, going deep!
I called it!
Theres your power
Great time for Ruiz’s first MLB HR.
Randy!!! Congrats!
Randy of the Redwoods for #1
Ruiz is the bomb. The Twins are out of their slump
That is almost two calls in a row!
Randy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
gatty, well if you predict a hit from every batter tonight, you are bound and determined to get it right eventually.
LIFT ME!
LIFT ME!
LIFT ME!
Thank you, Ruiz.
Regards,
MVP
Ruiz was looking very bad tonight. Redemption is sweet.
Ok…where is Dick’s excitement on that one? I’m tired of his phantom calls when they are still inside of the park and ho hum home run calls
Good luck getting that HR ball back to Ruiz.
But I didn’t say the pitch though on that one
Man… how many hitters is Rowland-Smith gonna get down 0-2?
Ugh, Delmon…
Exactly, gatty — we apparently now live in an alternate universe where our pasts don’t matter. Wins and losses in April don’t matter. Cleveland’s dive in the first four months of the season doesn’t matter — or wait, maybe it does, because they’re “in the rear view mirror”. How did they get there if those games didn’t matter? What matters now is the future. Tonight. The now. The moment. God, I’m going to sound like Barack Obama pretty soon!
My moment is to ignore this drivel, since I know now that Ruiz’s home run doesn’t matter, because it didn’t happen right now. It happened in the past. Those two runs that the Mariners scored were so long ago — all that matters is the ninth inning in a game that hasn’t been played yet. So simple.
where is my new best friend (Johnny Q) right now?
Not Terry Ryan, he must not have been able to read that one off the bat.
Another worthless AB from Young tonight. Needless to say, this is a HUGE inning for Baker to put a 0 up on the board.
“I’m not here to talk about the past”
-Mark McGwire
Thank you Randy!!!!!!!!!!!!!I was beginning to think we couldn’t shove a baserunner home with a Cat D10 Dozer.
Dick makes me laugh
And the game is untied…wait
Dick Bremer was a horrible outfielder in High School.
He COULD NOT judge a fly ball….and he STILL CAN’T!
nice call Dick
PHANTOM Call
Geeze Baker, do something.
Here we go with Beltre and Ibanez again. How’s about just giving Ibanez the free pass here?
The way that Delmon fielded that ball was embarrassing…
That 0-1 pitch was a strike.
Call the pen
How many times are the Twins going to left Ibanez kill them before they put him on in that situation?
GBG,
pardon me I thought you were referring to last year and the Indians. Could you refine the point you were making?
I was trying to say that tonight what the White Sox or Twins did on the road was meaningless because the fact is that the Twins were one game out. Going back showing the Twins were relatively good compared to other teams by showing their road record means nothing because the results yielded that.
I must have misunderstood your Cleveland comment since I assumed you were referring to last year’s one pitch away from the WS. What was your point?
God I hate Beltre and Ibanez…
Everyday Eddie
This is a joke, the twins actually tie it up and baker literally might give it away seconds later.
“romer,
I think that you’re in a slump also.”
My Beltre silence doesn’t seem to be working, does it Sane.
:(>
Has anyone ever caught a baseball with there hat before?
Ibanez absolutely kills us…
God I hate Beltre and Ibanez… and Lopez.
Well… the tie was fun while it lasted.
@#%#
their hat before?
romer,
Nope, it’s not working.
You can’t get Beltre out, either.
Our pitching is absolutely killing us
What in the heck is with Ibanez? He hits everything against every pitcher the Twins have, they would do better to walk him no matter the situation. He is getting on base no matter what. Argh.
Okay, now the weak M’s hitters coming up, with the lead runner only at 2nd.
Give it all up Baker.
My Last Month
A book by Scott Baker
Chapter 1: How to get a No Decision
Get the hell out of the way, UMP!!!!!
We still have Baker out there, with the way the bullpen has been I guess we night as well keep him in there even when he is struggling. Nice job by Young not letting runners advance.
romer,
What would tonight’s score be, if we had traded Baker for Beltre?
You have 20 seconds to calculate your answer.
Well, go score some more runs now.
He couldn’t do it. He just could not keep the game tied.
way to go Harris
sane, we would be 2 or 3 games lower in the standings if we traded for Beltre because we wouldn’t have had Perkins winning any games for us.
He has a quality start but i would say he has been far from sharp
What do you expect? A run scores everytime Ibanez is involved.
Does anyone on this blog know why the Twins abandoned the line-up they had when they won 17 out of 18, beating Randy Johnson, Brandon Webb, Ben Sheets, Jake Peavy, and some other studs? Specifically I am talking about Buscher at third, Harris, and shortstop, and Casilla at second? Did the Twins not like winning or what? I would like to see a Twins Brewers World Series, but I don’t see the Twins making the playoffs with all of the inconsistent line-ups put out there. Thanks.
Baker’s saving his good stuff for the ALCS.
Time for the birthday boy to do something.
I can think of a game this past weekend in Los Angeles we might have won, if Beltre was playing third instead of Butcher…
It has been a while since I saw the Twins turn that type of DP…
Something is wrong with Baker tonight… he can’t locate his fastball. Slider and changeup are ok.
Bass, problem is we still have to get their first. A loss would not help.
Come on Harris, that was horrible
“What would tonight’s score be, if we had traded Baker for Beltre?”
What’s the name of that particular form of propaganda, the flaming whatchamacallit…
my anus hurts
way to go swing at 3-1 you dumbass
That is the pitch Punto hits at? Argh.
LNP with a 3-0 count and still can’t get on.
“Does anyone on this blog know why the Twins abandoned the line-up they had when they won 17 out of 18, beating Randy Johnson, Brandon Webb, Ben Sheets, Jake Peavy, and some other studs? Specifically I am talking about Buscher at third, Harris, and shortstop, and Casilla at second?”
Casilla got injured, Punto got healthy, Gardy got stupid and Harris got benched.
troll, you aren’t fooling anybody.
Well, Gomez is making Punto look good with what he swings at. LOL
Baker has to come back out.
Another pathetic inning? Say it ain’t so Carlos… show us something… anything…
Did you hear what Dick just said?
Baker is making them look like the freaking 1927 Yankees. What is going on with him lately?
belt high, letter high
Gomez doesn’t swing that time. Great.
This has been another joke performance by our offense. Two night in a row against really crappy pitchers is unacceptable.
what a BS call
Shawn,
letter high 5 inches inside
I think the Ump might have a child named Ryan Rowland-Smith because there have been way too many gift strikes tonight.
is it just me or does everyone here also get a boner watching gomez run? oh my hes so sexy!
“Baker is making them look like the freaking 1927 Yankees. What is going on with him lately?”
He’s got a freakin’ quality start, JustinCB.
thrylos98, that pitch to Gomez was right there.
Exactly sane
I don’t think that called strike would be a strike to Richie Sexson…
Boy, it is so tough to tell which posts I type compared to which ones come from the imposter. Amazing.
yank him before this gets out of hand, i don’t care what his pitch count is, hes been garbage since pitch 1
“belt high, letter high”
Agreed. Dickie is lazy all around tonight.
Get Baker out.
Twins don’t score next inning, I am leaving.
my boyfriends junk is in my face thats why i cant tell.
Guess who is going to hit a GS this inning…
Yeah walk Ichiro who you have gotten out 3 times tonight in order to have to face Beltre after this next batter. Absolutely brilliant Gardy!
Have we done our quota of scoring tonight, can we put away the bats?
Breslow here?
Please take him out here. Don’t let him pitch to Beltre.
Don’t throw a fastball to Beltre!!!!!!!!!!!
whoops jumped a head a better
Please don’t hit a homer. Please don’t let Beltre be an off-season reminder of how we fell 2 games back, went 4-9 on the 14 game road trip, and how Billy Smith refused to acquire a strick before July 31 who had more than warning-track power.
Ok, Baker can get out of thi………..
Who’s up?
%$^&*$#@
if this imposter doesnt stop im gonna stick my junk in his butt.
4-9 on a 14 game roadtrip… WOW
Throw the curve away….
How was that not a strike?
Yeah. I predict a rainout in Toronto. Ha Ha.
High and tight. And then the slider down the middle way down in the dirt.
So does Ibanez hit a bomb
Bring in the lefty.
Guess who is going to hit a GS this inning…
see…
i love you Ben-The Original
Ugh… Perkins flashbacks to the first visit to Seattle this season… no… more… not… again…
Fortuitous IF hit there. No problem.
Oh, it’s Ibanez…….
:)>
I would prefer Eddie instead of Breslow but anybody against Ibanez other than Baker is a good thing.
great job by Harris. Butcher would have thrown it to the bleachers
Just don’t throw a fastball and this game will remain in reach. I hope it isn’t one of those first pitch HRs, but on the bright side, if it is I will miss it because FSN will miss it…
Hi all… first time poster… I live in Chicago but am a huge Twins fan. Go Breslow!
Hey, now I have an impostor
Will he throw him tight now?
“great job by Harris. Butcher would have thrown it to the bleachers”
Punto would have started a DP.
Just don’t throw that fastball…
That first swing would’ve sent the ball into orbit… man Ibanez…
Throw something dirty!
Who the hell cut Breslow’s hair, did anyone see that?
“…if it is I will miss it because FSN will miss it…”
Ha-ha gatty!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3GnpWJ_1ocg&feature=related
For bad memories, copy and paste.
For a second I thought it was a GS…
Wow nice work Craig, now please for the love of god get some runs.
Nice Breslow! Come on offense
Off the end of the bat…whew!
Amazing, he didn’t throw a first pitch fastball and it wasn’t hit for a HR!
I know it wasn’t even close, but every time Ibanez hits one in the air, my heart skips a beat.
Interesting how Twins fans fear him like he’s A-Rod or Pujols or something…
nicely done breslow.
Thank God it wasn’t deja vu all over again.
Span is calm and…….
Oh, okay.
Wow, Breslow got Ibanez out with bases full. Maybe he should be the designated pitcher against Ibanez. Or it was just luck.
I expect to see Jimenez or Woods this inning.
This is really their last shot with the top of the order. Otherwise Putz gets the rif raff for an easy save.
If breslow throws a fastball, that would have been in the upper deck and I would be looking for sleeping pills to get myself asleep really fast…
Good it is a righty and not a lefty in for this inning.
Chapter 2: Read Chapter One on NDs
Top of the order… new pitcher… let’s get after it now Twins! Battle your tails off and all that good stuff. ![]()
“Apologies, I’ve been writing about replay, etc., for our early editions.”
Check it out, Joe C. Twins just may have broken out of their slump with that Ibanez out.
Putz did pitch 2 innings yesterday, didn’t he?
Corcoran in the 8th.
Putz in the 9th.
Make something happen Casilla
Nite-nite time on the West Coast of Florida. Buenos Noches,Compadres
Span’s AB looked just like the last one. Same placement, same result.
Span’s getting himself into a bit of a slump here… not good…
Nora, I think you are right about Putz. Still, would rather see Mauer and Morneau get it done now.
Another strike that was above the belt…
Now don’t hit into a DP mauer…
Send Lexi, Burke can’t throw out Lecroy on a good night
Mauer you are due big time here.
all the Twins need is to get to Randy this inning
COME ON JOE.
All the twins need is to score 10 runs…
Steal a base please.
I agree, Alexi should be in motion here… worst case scenario, he gets caught, and you still have your highest OBP guy up with MVP on deck. ![]()
Corcoran’s all over the place… Alexi’s gonna get a good pitch to run on! Come on Ron, send him ![]()
Come on Justin
damn joe can you not hit a weak grounder in crucial situations
No steal attempt = almost DP
I said, DON’T hit into a DP mauer. Alexi should have been in motion…
Ruiz is going to get a big at bat with the game on the line
At least Redmond will be playing tomorrow..hah
Ugh.
WHY IS HE NOT RUNNING THERE? We could have speed on second with Morneau up. If they walk him, pinch hit with Kubel or let Ruiz take his shot.
I really hate Gardenhire’s absolute refusal to run with Casilla because Mauer is behind him. He’s one of the fastest players in the American League!
there it is… walk Mornie, 3 spot for Randy
Ah it’s a sleep little pennant race, isn’t it my fine little donkey lovers.
And the Twins fall two games back…
Morneau refused to take a walk and it cost the twins the game.
If you can’t hit the ball, hit him the ball in the catcher’s nuts.
Good night all
gatty, go to bed, nobody here needs you.
ha
but Mornie refuses to take a walk…
I meant —
“WHY IS HE NOT RUNNING THERE?”
Ah it’s a sleepy little pennant race, isn’t it my fin little donkey lovers.
Cuz Gardy is asleep. And we are euthanized hoping our Donk can get the RBI he’s been failing to get all night.
And now fails again. Close cigar, though.
I think your mom made you go to bed a little late last night, didn’t she troll?
why don’t you keep posting as me gatty? It hasn’t quite gotten old yet.
i know she kept me up late
the twins dont deserve to make the playoffs. not when they cant beat the worst team in the american league. they are done.
Your mom is calling…
gatty,
“Morneau refused to take a walk and it cost the twins the game.”
So you must know what the next two Twins hitters would have done.
How full of it you must be.
They would have had a chance, no?
This is frustrating, but the Mariners are not as bad a team as thier record indicates. As you would expect of a team with a $115 million payroll, they actually do have a decent player or two. It’s not always who you play but when you play them. It would have been far better to play them in June/July when they were busy tanking, and not when they seem intent on stepping it up, at least at home.
It’s up to the bottom of the order in the 9th.
Great.
Not that the top of the order has looked much better lately.
Scissor me timbers
The mariners are as bad as their record indicates. Look how ‘well’ they played against the white sox.
You mean like the first time the Twins played them, howeda? When they had lost something like 15 of 18 coming in to that series?
No part of the order has looked that great on the road.
Matty is back, guys (and gals) and this is good news… 2 days in a row
UGH, take a pitch there!
If the Twins can’t win tomorrow, the Twins seem to be in the midst of a chicagoeske fade down the stretch…
way to take some pitches randy! should have pinch hit kubel there, id take his bat over ruiz any day
Horrible AB by Ruiz. Like the early-season Gomez.
kubel on deck
PH Kubes for Punto, please…
book it - its over
Really nice K Delmon
Like those first two AB’s in the 9th weren’t totally predictable.
another above the belt strike
Lamb is ready to pinch-hit - if they can find him.
the strike zone is huge these days
that first strike was BS
I hate the term “fisted”
Great, the game is up to Punto…
it’s all up to punto
Glad we have the power hitting Punto up.
LNP to finish it off… Tomorrow’s game is in some serious needs of anti-depressants. Hung over from last night’s walk-off, a mere 6 hits came tonight, nothing past 2nd base. The road trip blues are playing.
If the Twins get 10 more HR’s total from Young and Ruiz the rest of the way — especially if they come in critical spots — they have a chance at the pennant.
Be nice to use Buscher here, but then there’d be no one ot hit for Gomez if it extended that far
Way to lose 4 straight!!!!!!!!!!!!
and there come Punto…
wow, this is ugly
Punto just missed a home run!
Why did Buscher not hit for Punto?
Great job Nick.
Looks like business as usual on the Twins bench. You think Gardy might have said something after yesterday’s sluggish game. Nope.
Steve,
that is Gardy managing… he never PH for Punto…
I’ll be the first to say that I’m not a Punto fan, but it’s hard to blame him for this loss.
And once again we lose to one of the worst teams in baseball…We make them look like freakin all-stars….
2 games back…2-4 at the beginning of the road trip….Crash and burn….
forget hitting for punto, why did kubel not hit for ruiz?!?!
The hitting has been awful, but every once in a while you need to be able to win a game 1-0 or 2-1. Twins just don’t have that type of pitcher right now. Tomorrow’s starter for Seattle is 0-1 7.88–would think they could salvage one game.
“If the Twins get 10 more HR’s total from Young and Ruiz the rest of the way — especially if they come in critical spots — they have a chance at the pennant.”
I take that back. Ruiz’s HR’s will only come instead of Kubel’s as he replaces Kubel at DH. Now, if Kubel were to play every day in RF, we’d truly have that extra RH power bat everyone wanted all season, and an increase in power in the lineup.
BTW, who is the 3rd catcher now?
I never have a confident feeling when Punto comes to the plate in any clutch situation. Always got that nervous feeling after last year … nervous like watching golf ball size hail fall out my window
Worst pitching staff in the league made a mockery of our hitters yesterday and today. I would not be surprised if the Twins are swept tomorrow. They better have a hell of a series in Oakland because the Twins will lose at least two in Toronto. Twins are playing like the Vikings right now, build you up to let you down.
We have only played one more home game than the white sox and we still play them three times at home. All hope is not lost!
romer…i think the 3rd catcher is Morneau
Literally the only reason Buscher is on this team is because he’s hit RHP well with men on base.
What a horrible decision by Gardenhire. Let Punto - who’s hitting 60 points lower versus RHP than LHP - bat with the game on the line.
That’s two horrible decisions in the 9th inning so far this road trip by Gardy, and both could very well have cost us the game.
Unless they had a lefty warmed up in the pen, and I missed them say that, there’s no excuse for letting Punto hit there over Buscher.
If Buscher only singles and it comes down to Gomez, well that’s fine, at least the game got that far, and good luck Carlos. Punto can’t be allowed to hit there. Stupid, stupid, stupid.
Don’t be so hard on Ruiz, guys. He got the only RBIs of the game…
No one was warming in the pen for Seattle
No one was up in the ‘pen for Seattle… and no one was up in Gardy’s old senile head then either.
Buscher is batting .350 against RHP and has an .864 OPS.
Man, that’s terrible. I’d like to hear Gardenhire’s explanation on that one.
Gardy will probably just brush this loss off as a tough game a against a scrappy team that just happens to be the worst team in the AL by a wide margin.
The worst pitching team in the entire league is pitching good. BS, Ron.
Stick a fork in them, they’re DONE!
I know, it’s just one game, they will get them back tomorrow. Well how many days have we been thinking that? It’s slowly starting to slip away and they can’t hope for the wildcard, isn’t going to happen. They need to catch the Whities and win the Central, the only route to the playoffs. Maybe they have over achieved too much and now it’s starting to show. Didn’t try to improve the team for a playoff push and reality is setting in - they are not a playoff team!
The wild card is out of the picture because the red sox play 20 of their last 29 at home. Not gonna happen…
Oh yeah, Morneau is backup catcher. Thanks Not Terry Ryan.
And speaking of “fisted”, had my physical today with a little procto action. The annual humility, ya know.
So no, don’t like “fisted” either.
Why the bleep do they let LNP bat in that situation? Something wrong with Buscher pinch hitting? Gardy needs to get his head out of his butt, four in a row now, it’s slipping away! Maybe it’s not his head, but someone elses (any guesses?)
My guess is Gardy was saving Butcher to p/h for Gomez.
Tough call, but the truth is I’d probably rather bat Punto/Butcher than Butcher/Gomez.
Carlos gets a little excited in big situations with men on base, in my opinion anyway.
Either way, as with last night, a couple people in the regular lineup just plain gotta get it done somewhere along the game. That’s 2 games in a row of 2 runs against a pretty bad pitching staff.
One thing that I’d like to see is Mauer be more aggressive in RBI situations. He’s down in the count 0-1, 1-2 almost every time because he refuses to swing the bat, and every pitcher knows it. He’s the 3 hitter for pete’s sake. Pick your spots and look for a pitch to turn on. Walks are nice. RBIs are better. A few less walks and a few more balls in the gap with runners on will win more games.
That’s why I was tough on Jimmy Bee earlier.
Steve F…if they pinch hit Buscher for Punto (and he’s only marginally more likely to get a hit) then they simply pinch around him and pitch to Gomez, who’s hopeless with guys on base in this type of situation. So you’re either left PH’ing Redmond and having a huge mess on defense or leaving to Gomez with two on, two out. I’ll take my chances with Punto and having Busher available to PH for Gomez if it gets that far.
Mauer should be looking to hit on the second pitch, pitchers know he is going to usually look at a few and know they can get him to 0-2 like Chief says
howeda, if Buscher comes in and gets a big hit and can score Everett (the pinch runner) it’s a tie and they take there chances to go to extra innings. I don’t trust Punto in that situation, it looked like he was trying to swing for the fence instead of just trying to get a hit.
So —
No Kubel starting.
No hit and run with Casilla on 1st.
No PH appearances by Redmond and Buscher, two good pinch hitters.
Gotta point the finger at Gardy on this one (not GIVE the finger).
Mr. Gardenhire, the rest of the season is up to you. Some things looked a little sleepy tonight.
And MVP, use your head and get an RBI walk, man. Gardy has three good pinch hitters on the bench if he doesn’t want to use Ruiz.
The positive note —
Guerrier looked terrific. 93 mph FB. Very sharp-breaking stuff. Eddie G’s got him out of his mental slump. He knows he doesn’t have to do the plantation work anymore.
G’night.
Baker didn’t look real sharp again, left too many pitches up, but had some good defense behind him to limit the damage. As usual his teammates don’t get him enough run support, I hope Perkins is up to the challenge on Wednesday.
This team, unfortunately, is youthful and, like someone voiced earlier, over-achieving to date. They are playing tight and sloppy in the field and the M’s are loosy-goosy(sp?). Fundamentally, they are poorly schooled and, as a group, appear to be neither particularly bright nor aggressive. It was interesting to hear Hunter’s almost appalled reaction to the term “loose cannons”. Great way to not build confidence in young players is my read of his statements. An observation…
If anything the team is over-aggressive at times. Base running comes to mind.
The radio guys just said that if the Angles win tomorrow or the Mariers loose, the Mariners are elemenated mathamatically from being in the play-offs. (as if they had a chance at this point)
I will be at the game tomorrow. Hope for a win.
Steve H, point is that if you use Buscher to PH for Punto, they’re going to pitch around him to get to Gomez, who’s a complete black hole with guys on base and two outs.
Ms. Nora, I appreciate your point. I think sane said it properly when he referred to aggressive stupid vs bright (or something to that note). Running against the odds isn’t aggressive, it is misspent emotion that kills rallies and loses close games. Unfortunately, even after 3/4 of a season, our people are making many of the same mistakes repeatedly.
I should have said a Twins win.
letting ruiz hit in the 9th was stupid. letting ruiz hit behind morneau was even stupider.
think about it… ruiz had 3 horrible at-bats tonight. struck out on 3 pitches leading of the 2nd, failed to move morneau over after he led off with a double, then promptly grounded out the first pitch he saw to lead off the ninth.
let kubel lead off the 9th!
and as far as not hitting for punto… 2 reasons to defend gardy here:
1. buscher was being saved for gomez. gomez would have been worthless in that situation.
2. if memory serves punto has come up with more than one extra base hit while trailing in the ninth. i don’t think the twins won those games, probably why nobody remembers?
i know the hope/strategy was for kubel to come up with somebody to knock in, but i think letting kubel lead off leads it open for buscher to hit later, and take his AVG vs righties with RISP and take your chances there.
hindsight is 20/20. twins laid a big one tonight though. mauer and morneau should stay in the hotel and rest tomorrow… they need a break! mauer has had two of the worst days at the plate i’ve ever seen him have.
Why the bleep do they let LNP bat in that situation?
Your buddy Nick Punto had two doubles in two ABs against K-Rod during the Anahiem series if I’m not mistake.
The rest of the lineup promptly failed to drive him in.
Ruiz is good, but it’s pretty tough going into September when your number 5 hole hitter is a Triple A call up with 5 rbi’s heading into the game.
