BALTIMORE — Tonight’s Twins game has been rained out. The Twins and Orioles will make it up as part of a doubleheader Saturday, beginning at 4:05 p.m.

I will send any pitching updates when they come.

Update (7:50 p.m.): No changes with the pitching.

Scott Baker will pitch Game 1 on Saturday opposite Daniel Cabrera, with Glen Perkins opposite Garrett Olson in Game 2.

Great news on no pitching change.

If we would just go to Breslow as our set-up man, we’d win the division by 2+ games.

Why isn’t Gardy following the numbers here?

Joe,

4:05 Minnesota time or Maryland time?

I’m in Washington State.

Well, this sets up a nightmare scenario:
Twins lose two, WSox win two, WSox lead is 3 games in one day.

But what about the opposite?
Twins win two, WSox lose two, Twins lead is 1 game in one day…

4:05 PM Central time, that Minnesota Time. 5 PM eastern, 2 PM PST.

The way I see it now, Humber is going to have to start on the 17th in Cleveland against Cliff Lee. I don’t see them trotting Baker out on three days rest to pitch that game.

But all is not lost that way. It pushes Liriano into the white sox series, sets him up to pitch on the final day of the season, and sets Baker up to pitch the one game playoff if needed, or game 1 of the ALDS.

Or, if they have it wrapped up on the final day, Humber makes that start, and Liriano and Baker are well rested for the ALDS.

13 Orioles Baker
13 Orioles Perkins
14 Orioles Blackburn
15 Indians Slowey
16 Indians Liriano
17 Indians Humber??
18 Rays Baker
19 Rays Perkins
20 Rays Blackburn
21 Rays Slowey
22 OFF
23 Sox Liriano
24 Sox Baker
25 Sox Perkins
26 Royals Blackburn
27 Royals Slowey
28 Royals Liriano or Humber

This might be even better:

Pitch Humber this sunday against the weaker Orioles Line up. Push Blackburn and Slowey back a day. Sets up Liriano vs Lee on the 17th, and Liriano then sets up for the White Sox series too

13 Orioles Baker
13 Orioles Perkins
14 Orioles Humber
15 Indians Blackburn
16 Indians Slowey
17 Indians Liriano
18 Rays Baker
19 Rays Perkins
20 Rays Blackburn
21 Rays Slowey
22 OFF
23 Sox Liriano
24 Sox Baker
25 Sox Perkins
26 Royals Blackburn
27 Royals Slowey
28 Royals Liriano

No Twins game tonight booooo!! It was shaping up to be a hell of a TV night, Twins on at 6, WWE Smackdown at 7, and Kansas @ South Florida also at 7. Still a lot going on TV, but I was lost from 6-7.

Ah outside baseball, the way it shou…will be once you get your outside park. Comming from Western North Dakota or Eastern Montana, I’m afraid I won’t be able to go to any games once the new park is built. The cheepest it’s been in the last few years was just a little over $1000.00.
We schedule our trips months in advance. The chance of snow or rain in April…Rain in May and June…Sunburn in July and Augest (I remember the old Met) and Rain again in September. It’s not like we can reschedule. Good Luck with your outdoors baseball. There will be a lot of these days in Your future.

Right now the need for a retractable roof is just speculation. Once 2010 hits, and we’re playing in the humidity or freezing our tails off, it’s going to make for some miserable baseball without a retractable roof.

Tomorrow is shaping up as the most important day of the season to this point. There is a FOUR GAME swing possible. The Twins can be 3 games behind or 1 game ahead as the extremes. No other single day will have this much impact on the pennant race. Next most important will be playing games against Pale Hose just before the end of the season. This will be very nerve wracking just like when the Twins needed to win just one game in Boston during the last series in 1967(?) & could not do it. Every year since then, the first thing I do when I see their new schedule each year is to see who they play the last series of the year…. just in case it all comes down to the last game or two again. Look what the Royals did to Detroit in 2006! It should be fun. Good luck to the Twins. :)

Not like there is anything else to do in the Twin Cities then sit in a stadium to watch a Twins game. Even if a game is rained out and you are coming to Minneapolis from a distance there are other things that can be done when there is bad weather. As for a sunburn, easy solution like at a beach, wear lots of sunscreen.

For goodness sakes other areas like Chicago, Cleveland, and varios East Coast teams have no retractable roofs and have lived to tell about. It will be fine.

What an idiotic decision. They’re going to start at 4, why not play at noon and then keep the regularly scheduled evening game? Playing two games right on top of each other followed by a Sunday afternoon game will kill both teams.

Aaron says:

If I was paid multi-millons, I would play 4 games on top of eachother.

I would do it for a couple hundred thousand a year, come to think on it.

Baker should pull a Walter Johnson and pitch 18 innings of shut-out ball tomorrow.

That should be enough to warrant some national attention, no?

good news-well rested for the action tomorrow, chance to move into 1st w/lead

bad news-tough way to start road trip(would that be 3 games in a 24 hour period?) extra innings could really mess up the bullpen! oh and maybe being 3 out.

agree, a big day, but i’ll be watching football! i’ll check in tho…

mlb.com has the first game starting at 5 EST (4 Central, 2 PST). is that anywhere on this site?

snepp says:

Baker should pull a Walter Johnson and pitch 18 innings of shut-out ball tomorrow.

Only if he can keep his pitch count under 100.

I’m not looking ahead to the ChiSox seres(though I’m sure Gardy is). As poorly as the Twins are playing on the road they’re likely to go 3-7 on this road trip. If that happens the ChiSox series will be pointless unless they go in the dumper as well.

Uh, Dan, I think we did just fine outdoor in the Met Stadium days. Everyday is not Utopia!

If I’m driving up from DC with my 3year old to catch the early game (5pmEST), what time should I show up for BP? My son will be wearing his Santana jersey.

Thankfully it looks like the Sox were rained out as well, so they’re in the same boat as the Twins when it comes to the Doubleheader.

“nice to see nicky get rewarded with his 50th+ start in a row after a 2 week .217 ave and 1 rbi.”

Actually, Nick has hit .250 in the last 2 weeks.

Nick’s OBP of .357 (June), .359 (July), .341 (Aug) and his superior fielding and base running has kept him starting. It is a team sport. A player can’t be great everyday, or every week.

Gardy most likely sees Nick as superior, at this time, to his other two alternatives (Everett and Tolbert). That explains his continuous starts.

Everett will probably get a start or two at SS before the season ends. That should please the Punto haters.

Jack says:

The Twins pitching will not be a problem in the stretch run. The Twins supposed strong suite of defense will be what costs them in losing the division to the White Sox. Punto, and also Cuddyer when he returns to the lineup, will cost the Twins the division by making costly fielding errors. The Twins will finally pay the price for starting over-rated players in the lineup.
