Game 2 pregame: Twins/Orioles

Posted on September 13th, 2008 – 7:31 PM
By Joe Christensen

BALTIMORE — Twins manager Ron Gardenhire said Boof Bonser injured his back in the seventh inning of the Twins’ 12-2 victory over the Orioles in Game 1 of their doubleheader.

Bonser strained something in his back, but it’s unclear if this will keep him out for any length of time, Gardenhire said.

(*) Gardenhire had planned to let Justin Morneau be his DH for Game 2, but late in the Game 1 victory, Morneau told Gardenhire he wanted to play first base again. Gardenhire said he had planned to use Brendan Harris at first.

(*) Scott Baker said he was heading back to pitch the seventh inning in Game 1 before the Twins stretched their lead from 4-1 to 7-1. This allowed Gardenhire to pull Baker with 94 pitches, which will help him get ready to pitch Wednesday on three day’s rest.

Baker said he’ll be ready, and Gardenhire seems to like the idea but said no decision has been made.

Who’s this Adam Everett fellah? How about Randy Ruiz - isn’t he a boxer?

Looks like Gardy is fine with 1 out of 2 today.

6-0, orioles

ok, Punto is out of the lineup….all the haters can be happy…heck even those that kinda like the little guy are probably happy. A well deserved game off.

“ok, Punto is out of the lineup….all the haters can be happy…heck even those that kinda like the little guy are probably happy. A well deserved game off.”

Punto is the second worst position player in the majors. It’s a shame that Everett is the worst

Comparing the Lineups:
1. Denard Span, RF
SAME

2. Alexi Casilla (Tolbert)
Not bad, but I would have liked to see Casilla in there again.

3. Joe Mauer, C
Obviously a drop-off, but Red Dog is one of the better backups.

4. Justin Morneau, 1B
SAME

5. Jason Kubel, DH
Obvious choice with a lefty on the mound.

6. Delmon Young, LF
SAME

7. Brian Buscher, 3B
Harris has been pretty productive this season. What about Macri?

8. Nick Punto, SS
Everett? Not so sure about this one. How about Tolbert with Casilla at second?

9. Carlos Gomez, CF
SAME

Is gardy serious? This is a playoff chase starting lineup?

He says he is nervous to mijares in a game because it can create a mess. What about this lineup? Where is mauer? He can’t DH?

By the way, does Gardy know it is not mandatory to have your catcher hit 3rd even if it is not mauer? I like redmond as a backup, but not may teams plug in a bench player in the 3 hole each time he starts!

gatty790 says:

whalefeet says:

morneau is definitely the most VALUABLE player. without him, the twins are nothing. it all depends on how the voters vote. best numbers or most valuable. hopefully morneau will finish with the best numbers and just make it an easy decision.

anyways, this twins team looks hungry. i think this road trip will be different than the last one.

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 7:52 pm

Wow, this lineup has produced EARLY

bombat says:

September 13th, 2008 at 7:53 pm

sane, do you seriously think this is what gardy planned when he put pen to paper? You have had too much TC kool-aid if that is the case.

Whatever works is fine with me.

Even theie ball boys can’t field. Right thorugh the 5 hole

T says:

No. You’re right. Gardy game into tonight’s game completely willing to accept a loss in this game.

If you thought Kool-Aid was a problem on the Strib boards…I’m practically drowning in the Haterade around here.

If I’m Gardy, I beg the umps to let this either go 5 if it does start…or I beg to register this as a suspended game.

it must be nice for him to have the luxury of picking which games he wants to win. I wish he would string it together long enough to get us some breathing room in the division.

Fran says:

6 runs in three innings is unacceptable

tim says:

September 13th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

How is Livan Perkins doing? Has he eaten more than 2 2/3 innings? Is the 6th inning blowup early. What professionalism!!!

thrylos98 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

ok… about time Perkins goes out.

johnnyonspot says:

September 13th, 2008 at 8:56 pm

Time to get Perkins out of there. Once again, this game has “LOSS” written all over it… even with a 4-run lead.

Nora says:

September 13th, 2008 at 8:57 pm

It sure is. When Twins scored 10 runs. Throw strikes and this inning would not have been so bad.

sane says:

September 13th, 2008 at 8:57 pm

Are we adjusting the rotation so Perkins faces the White Sox?

Can we re-think that?

Charles Barkley says:

September 13th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Perkins is turrible…just turrible.

Nora says:

September 13th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

They have to readjust so he doesn’t. It is unacceptable to have Perkins pitch in that important of a game. Gardy has completely lost his mind if he allows that to happen.

sane says:

September 13th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

The Twins may have to score 20 runs to tie.

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 8:59 pm

Has boof ever won ten games?

johnnyonspot says:

September 13th, 2008 at 9:00 pm

I think he got a big head winning ten games, then won a couple more, head got bigger, now he’s going through deflation period. Seriously, look at the size of his hat.

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 9:01 pm

At least Gardy was able to cool off Ruiz’s bat.

thrylos98 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 9:03 pm

Time for Gardy to go with a 4 man rotation

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 9:03 pm

No other team has scored 10 runs today. The twins did it twice.

Nora says:

They need to kick him out.

fcmlefty says:

September 13th, 2008 at 9:06 pm

Time to pull Perkins, and make him be the pitcher to go on 3 days rest in Cleveland. He could then get skipped with the off day before the White Sox series

tim says:

September 13th, 2008 at 9:06 pm

This was a very Humbering outing

September 13th, 2008 at 9:07 pm

Unfortunately, there may be more mechanical issues involved.

September 13th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

Perkins does not deserve a win in this game. Plain and simple.

johnnyonspot says:

September 13th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

Three innings… pretty sorry. I like the plan of bringing him back on 3 days rest, leeping him out of the Chisox series. Good plan.

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 9:12 pm

two or three innings for Korecky would be nice

“Major League Level” - 4th time

Why are Orioles getting helped? Are these guys White Sox fans?

T says:

September 13th, 2008 at 9:30 pm

It’s “only” a 5-run lead with the way the O’s have been hitting.

Not to mention they hit Span for doing nothing more than hitting well. It’s not like he was showing off.

Out of all former MVP’s playing in the league today, I bet none would run as hard to first base on a groundout to the pitcher as Morneau just did. Great to see hustle like that and it sets a good example for the extra new guys in the dugout.

Just got back from the DH, left 2nd game after top of 3rd when score 10-2 (She who bosses us all wanted to go today after sitting through 2 hours of rain last night. She thought it was going to be a day/night deal). We left a Twins fan from Seattle in charge, and by the time we were out of the parking lot it was 10-6.

Through most of the first game predominant Twins crowd. Turned to 60/40 Orioles by the 2nd game.

Miljares looks like the spitting image of Reyes.

September 13th, 2008 at 10:34 pm

“Miljares looks like the spitting image of Reyes.”

I thought it was Reyes or Guardado. After figuring out who it was, I told my wife that it’s apparant that if you’re a Hispanic pitcher for the Twins, you have to be more than slightly overweight.

What about Liriano?

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:35 pm

I thought his wind up and delivery look like CC’s. I guess Humber won’t be pitching on Wed…

Drunk Fan is back

Nora says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:36 pm

Surprised Baltimore has gotten only the 6 runs. BP has been on a tightrope all night. They have been getting out of trouble for once though. Thank goodness.

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:36 pm

Good point Skip…guess I should’ve said Hispanic Twins bullpen pitchers instead….

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:36 pm

I finally figured out what he is saying: Melvin Mora

Shawn in binghamton says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

hope they have a few left in em tommorrow…. While I keep up a the vikes on this phone

Nora says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

Drunk fan should have been removed by now.

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:37 pm

Drunk fan should have been arrested for disruption of the peace…

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:38 pm

Forgive me gentleman, but is tomorro’s game on MY TV or whatever that network is called?

Krissy says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:39 pm

Reminds me of the playoff games in 2006 in Oakland where the crowd kept chanting “Mar-co Scu-taro”….

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:39 pm

I actually heard drunk fan yell out a comparison between one of our guys and Torii Hunter. He seems like the type of guy you want to ignore but have to hide your laughs at because he’s actually kind of funny

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:40 pm

Tough strike zone

Nora says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Throw strikes! GRRRRR

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

Dick made a pretty interesting point. He mentioned that Humber was a starting pitcher in AAA ball, then asked why he’d be starting the inning from the stretch right now with nobody on. Good question. Maybe to hopefully prepare for a spot in the bullpen come playoff time?

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:42 pm

8 pitches, 1 strike

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:43 pm

gatty790 says:

Winning Season!

Nora says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Nice job. DP. Twins need that because the pitchers obviously are allergic to throwing strikes.

Buckwheat says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

Two in a row on the road. Good confidence builder.

Nora says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:45 pm

mickey mental says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

season over anyone?

Shawn in binghamton says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

how did mijares look?

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

How can anyone say that Ruiz is an unsung hero when he had three strike outs?

sane says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Mijares, Korecky and Humber, or
Crain, Guerrier and Reyes?

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

He looked good, on his strike out his fastball hit 95, but was around 93 with his fastball for the most part.

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:46 pm

Gophers and Twins on Saturday: 3-0.

Vikings and Twins on Sunday: 2-0?

If so this could be a great weekend for MN sports.

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

Mijares, Guerrier, Reyes

sane says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

gatty,
That’s why he was unsung.

Buckwheat says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:47 pm

K-Rod about to get save 58. Impressive but I still think Morneau deserves MVP more than him.

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:48 pm

sane-

I’ll go with the former of your choices. Gardy threw in mostly unproven guys and the bullpen he played tonight did well.

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:49 pm

K-Rod as MVP? HELL NO!! Dennys Reyes could have 58 saves on a team like the Angels this year. I’m only kind of kidding.

Nora says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:50 pm

How can you not like Redmond, and his attitude.

sane says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:51 pm

8-6 the rest of the way gets us 90 wins and gets FIRE VAVRA.. a new moniker.

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

…but not a new personality.

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:53 pm

Thumbs up for tolbert tonight.

gil says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:54 pm

so are we tied for first place now?

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

Technically yes, but the winning % of the twins is slightly less

sane says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

gil,
Percentage points behind in 2nd place.

gil says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:55 pm

whatever, I’ll take it
first place!

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:56 pm

K-Rod has 58

mickey mental says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:58 pm

technically, it’s percentage point. as in singular.

Shawn in binghamton says:

September 13th, 2008 at 10:59 pm

Good first 2 since I got to md, if they win tommorrow I might have to stay

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:00 pm

K-Rod has 58 saves.

Congratulations who probably can’t even look his own teammates in the eye because he knows he’d be lulled away by more money if he could get it.

the Dragon says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:00 pm

Shawn,

Miljares looked good, although my perspective from the stands doesn’t mean much. 1-2-3 inning with K and a long fly ball to RF.

I spent the whole inning trying to convince myself that it wasn’t Reyes.

Regards,

sane says:

I hate to c–p on the birthday cake, but we started our last roadtrip 2-0 also. (against the Angels!)

gil says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:04 pm

angels have lots of dough that they will throw at him

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:04 pm

AAAhhhh sane you ruined the cake!

mickey mental says:

I’m sorry.
I should have kept the wet towel to myself.
And it IS fun!

Shawn in binghamton says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:10 pm

better than 0-2

Charles Barkley says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

K-Rod will be a Met next year.

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:14 pm

Definitely a good day. I know it’s cliche, but it’s hard to beat any time twice in that amount of time. Twins did it and you really can’t point to anything that stuck out negatively, other than a bad start by Perkins, but who cares we have a solid bullpen right?

Either way this puts a lot of pressure on the White Sux for their doubleheader tomorrow. Here’s hoping for a 6-0 Minnesota Sports weekend.

Shawn in binghamton says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:17 pm

6 shutout innings for the bully

Mudcat says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

6-0 Minnesota weekend? That could mean the Twins, the Vikings, and the Gophers could be in first place. That doesn’t happen too often.

Dan says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:22 pm

Did everyone leave this board already?

gatty790 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:45 pm

I think Denard might finish 2nd in the ROY voting. That is pretty cool.

thrylos98 says:

September 13th, 2008 at 11:49 pm

These wins were great.

Just a couple of things:

I hope Bonser is ok. He apparently gained most of the weight he lost during the offseason back, and this could be an issue..

The Twins can bring up to 8-10 more players from the minors (I just don’t have time to do the math now) Gardy and Smithy should get as many pitchers up as possible including Delaney, Slama and Gomez to help the team for the stretch run

Perkins gotta be in the pen. Get Swarzak up and have him, Perkins and Humphrey share Perkins’ next starts

The pressure is on the Sox and I hope Detroit delivers

gil says:

September 14th, 2008 at 12:04 am
