Reyes qualifies as a Type B free agent

The Elias Sports Bureau recently compiled its 2007-08 player rankings, which are used to determine which players qualify as Type A and Type B free agents.
A Twins official confirmed that reliever Dennys Reyes qualified as a Type B free agent. This means, if the Twins offer him salary arbitration, and he leaves via free agency, the Twins will receive a supplemental round draft pick in the 2009 June amateur draft.
Last year, Torii Hunter was a Type A free agent, so the Twins received the Angels’ first-round pick (No. 27 overall) and a supplemental round pick (No. 31 overall). They used those picks, respectively, to take University of Miami pitcher Carlos Gutierrez and Tulane pitcher Shooter Hunt.
It’s interesting viewing the entire Elias rankings. The two-year platform is important. The reason Carlos Silva didn’t qualify as even a Type B free agent last year is he had such a poor 2006 season before rebounding in 2007.
The best links I could find came from the New York Post, which got the information from the Associated Press. Check out the full AL rankings here, and the NL rankings here. Some notables from the lists:
(*) Joe Mauer (not a free agent, of course) was not only a Type A, but also received the top ranking among AL catchers at 89.401.
(*) Reyes was the lowest qualifier among Type B AL relief pitchers, at 57.480.
(*) Other pending Twins free agents, Nick Punto, Adam Everett and Eddie Guardado did not qualify as Type B’s.
(*) Joe Nathan qualified as the top AL reliever, at 92.845, meaning he would have been a solid Type A free agent had the Twins not locked him up with a four-year deal in spring training.
(*) Matt Guerrier (not a free agent, so won’t factor into compensation) also qualified as a Type A, at 71.003. Again, it speaks to the importance of the two-year platform. Guerrier was terrific in 2007 and the first part of last season before struggling in the second half. That two-year platform will help him get a nice raise in arbitration after making $950,000 last year.

from mlb trade rumor:
Overheard at the general manager meetings:
* Minnesota would seem to have the team with the talent reservoir to deal for Rockies third baseman Garrett Atkins, but the teams only have had initial talks. If the Angels sign free agent CC Sabathia, which is his preference, they could step into the Atkins talks by offering left-handed pitcher Joe Saunders or right-hander Ervin Santana.
Yeah, I saw that rumor. But initial talks could mean anything…
If they nontender Guerrier and he becomes a free agent, can they get compensation?
cmath, I really don’t think so because even pending free agents have to be offered arbitration to get compensation. Even as a free agent no team would lose their first rounder for him, he would only be signed by teams with protected first round picks.
Half: That’s what I thought too. I still don’t think they’ll tender him a contract, though. I can’t remember a guy so completely falling apart so quickly. In Rincon’s case, his decline was sort of gradual over a few years. But Guerrier just fell off a cliff when he lost the feel for his curveball.
If thy do tender him a contract, how do they upgrade the bullpen? Nathan, Neshek, Mijares, Crain, Guerrier and Breslow leaves room for a long man such as Bonser and that’s it. If they don’t tender him a contract, they can use his and Reyes’s money to pay for a guy like JJ Putz or Heath Bell, whom they would acquire in packages containing Adrian Beltre or Kalil Green.

No way the angels give up Santana for Atkins. Twins should dump Guerrier while he still qualifies as a type A if that’s the case.

I’ll add “…or sign Juan Cruz”.
What is the story with Chad Cordero? What was his injury last year?
The take on Atkins is that his defense is questionable, which tells me that Gardy would have a difficult time inserting him as an every day third baseman. Afterall Punto played 3B for us for almost the entire 2006 season. That should tell you something.
Speaking of free agents, our amateur Class A team out of minneapolis is looking for quality free agents. Check out the link.
atkins fielding pct and range factor are better then buscher and gardy seems fine with his fielding. the thing that bothers me are his splits away from coors are not good. i think a lot of hitters #’s are inflated there and his, at least last yr, were real bad. however, he still hits homeruns on the road just everything else sucks.
I hope you sign some free agents Mplsrocks. Sounds like maybe the Rocks need better hitting. Your website said Paul Bissonette, Matt Youngquist, and Jesse Retzer couldn’t hit water if they fell out of a boat. That seems a little harsh. What if we criticized Twins players like that………..oh, nevermind.
DY and perkins for Atkins
DY and Humber for Atkins
Dy and Perkins for Holladay
Khalil is a solid defensive guy that can drop 20 bombs and is a right handed hitter.
And I don’t think he’d cost a lot since the Pads are trying to dump salary.
I’d rather have him than some of the over priced free agents.
sure-thing in Matt Holliday
let me play a bit of a Devil’s advocate about how sure thing Matt Holliday is (and I am discounting the $100 mil/ 5 year contract that requires to stay long term):
He will be 29 this January, which means he has 1-3 prime years left.
His career numbers away from Coors are: .280/.348/.455
Kubel’s career numbers are: .268/.326/.445, last year he hit .272/.335/.471 and will still be 26 in opening day next year meaning that he has not yet reached his prime
Even Cuddyer who turns 30 next March and it is at about Holliday’s career phase as far as prime goes, has the following career numbers: .268/.344/.441
despite the bad last year.
Would Holliday be a “sure thing”? Based on the comparisons I think he will surely be expensive both in cash and players and not a hugely drastic improvement from what the Twins have (and I am not even talking about Young’s/Gomez’/Span’s potential…)
BC but if we get spicoli will he come with Mr Hand

Khalil Greene is a no-brainer. Someone like Humber would be more than enough to get him
BC but if we get Spicoli (Greene) will he come with Mr Hand
The big question from Joe’s information has to be, will the Twins offer arbitration to Reyes? Do they want to take a chance on him accepting, to get the draft pick if he doesn’t?
Humber and Pridie for Atkins
Delmon Young, Ben Revere, and Glen Perkins for Matt Holliday.
how do they upgrade the bullpen?
Neshek
Mijares
full season of one of Bonser/Perkins knowing he is a reliever from the start
Actually the pen was not as bad as most people thought…
DY, Perkins and Boof for Holliday
perkins alone would be to much for atkins!
The pen was bad. It cost the team a playoff birth.
I’m not a fan of the idea of giving up Delmon. I think long-term he will be a stud. However, if it meant getting Holliday, I would not hesitate to pull that. The only thing is they would need to shell out pretty huge money to sign Holliday past this coming year…
I’m good with giving up any outfielder except Gomez for Kouz and a relief pitcher.
We have some stud outfielders coming up in the next few years, including Revere and this year’s first round pick Hicks.
Liriano and Gomez for ARod
I think we should sell high on Revere right now. With Gomez, Span, and Hicks, I would say CF is pretty well covered for the next several years. With Revere coming off his close to .400 hitting season, you would think his value would be pretty decent…
Anyone else see that Delmon finished just behind Carlos Quentin (who probably would have won the MVP if he stayed healthy) in the player rankings
Yep, Greene is ugly with an ugly .213 batting average. Although 27 homers in ‘07 is eye opening. Dropped off to 10 last year and is almost 30 years old. Not too many prime years left. Adam Everett takes a nicer photograph.
I say we just sign Furcal and Casey Blake, that would solve all our woes
okay, some of our woes

Start converting Ben Revere to a 3rd baseman now.
The Situationer I know that this would solve all of our woes and the fans would become ecstatic. Sales would go up and we would produce more revenue. I would throw a one man band parade. One problem though our owner is the stingiest miser on the planet who would have contracted the Twins had he had his way.
The big question from Joe’s information has to be, will the Twins offer arbitration to Reyes? Do they want to take a chance on him accepting, to get the draft pick if he doesn’t?
Yes, we would offer him arbitration. The Twins offer would be lower than what Reyes would want. Also, Reyes numbers look good and he is a lefty so it is almost a given that he would get a 2-3 year deal if FA.
It is true that there are a lot of top prospect outfielders in the minors. It is also true that they are different type of players and it is true that the earliest possible they will be up with the Twins will be 2011. Revere is a prototypical lead off hitter. Hicks and Benson project at the middle of the order. Currently the Twins have 5 outfielders in the majors and one in the wings in the minors. Of these 6:
Span had a breakthrough season, but is he going to perform at that level consistently through the years?
Gomez and Young improved from their seasons in 2007, flashed signs of brilliance, but more work is necessary.
Cuddyer was a major disappointment. His OPS was higher only than Gomez’ from the starters/quasi-starters in the team. Harris had a better OPS than Cuddyer. So did Punto. And that was even before he got hurt the first time.
Kubel is probably going to be a full-time DH coming forward (actually based on Vavra’s interview at mlb.com today, he might be a platoon DH). A possible platoon of Kubel and Cuddyer might work at DH. He is the weakest fielder in the group.
Pridie = Tyner with a bit more pop.
There is not much room for trading outfielders at this point at any level of the organization, unless they are ok and not great prospects (e.g. Dustin Martin or any other outfielder that played at Ft. Myers and above last season)
That’s definitely a great point about all of our outfielders. But, I would still trade both Delmon and Revere if it meant getting a sure-thing in Matt Holliday (if they could sign him long-term, which I doubt they would). His right-handed bat in between M & M would be ridiculous.
Un I agree 100% regarding getting Matt Holliday. Why can’t someone who actually wants to put money into the team buy the Twins and treat the fans fairly. I feel sometimes that the product that the twins put on the field is overmatched in our division compared to others
What do you guys think of us going after Khalil Greene SS of the Padres?
I also think that if they don’t go that way that going after Orlando Hudson, and moving Casilla to the SS spot would make the defense much better up the middle.
Greene is Ugly BC
Humber and Pridie for Zimmerman.
A raise for Guerrier? Are you kidding me? If he gets a raise, it better be with a different team. Unless they are looking to fill a mop up role, bringing him back will be a huge mistake.
here is my suggestion keep all players in tact - the only thing i would consider is add a top fa third baseman for two years until danny valinaco develops and we do not give up anybody.if we trade - letus trade for hardy and perhaps give up bonser, guierrer, swarzak cuddyyer, or if trade value perkins any combination here what do we get power ss, power 3rd baseman.worst case scenario we lose two or htree in a trade then sign hardy for a long term package. go twins
Sign Blake, trade Delmon for Hardy
Small adjustments are what’s needed, not a major overhaul. I’m not convinced by Delmond Young or Carlos Gomez yet. We need to keep Cuddyer at least until the young outfielders establish themselves. We shouldn’t trade any of our young starters. Pitching is too important. Let’s get a young third baseman on the cheap or continue with the Buscher & Harris platoon. Perhaps upgrade shortstop and the bullpen will definitely need an upgrade.
