Twins offer arbitration to Reyes
Posted on December 1st, 2008 – 4:13 PMBy Joe Christensen
The Twins offered arbitration to free agent reliever Dennys Reyes today, which will assure them of a supplemental-round pick in next June’s amateur draft if he signs with another team.
Reyes qualified as a Type B free agent. He has until Sunday to accept or decline the arbitration offer.
The Twins’ other three free agents — Nick Punto, Adam Everett and Eddie Guardado — did not qualify as Type A’s or B’s.
According to the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers declined to offer arbitration to shortstop Edgar Renteria, a type A free agent. That could make Renteria more appealing for some teams because they won’t have to give up a first-round pick by signing him, but I haven’t heard of the Twins having interest.

Had to do this because of getting the pick. Even if he doesn’t leave, with Neshek out maybe it’s not bad to have him around for one more year and let him walk after 2009.
*gulps*
Pen looks full as is, I don’t think I want him back
we’ll have him, mijares and breslow (underrated in my opinion) as lefties out of the pen. not too shabby
never can have enough LH pitchers.
Sign him and have 3 lefties!
win Twins!
He won’t accept. He wants more than a one year deal, which is what he’d get through arb.
Sign him up……..
And trade trylos98!
Hey Joe. Are we the mystery team trying to sign Furcal? No one seems to know which team it is.
No thanks on Renteria. Guy seems to be a headcase playing in the AL.
Renteria was an elite with the Bravos … hey maybe he can get back in shape and hit like he used to, I’d like Renteria personally.
Reyes won’t be back, not with what Affeldt already made on the free agent market. Reyes will get a two-year deal, which is better than he can do in arbitration, obviously.
Any other pending Type A’s not offered arbitration?
rather have Reyes, than another dead-beat right hander who used to start,,,
Josh,
Renteria’s best years were with the Marlins and the Braves- aka 2 NL teams.
Furcal I think would be nice especially if Oakland of all teams is trying to get him.
cmath,
the deadline is 11PM eastern, but the word is that Bob Howry (who might interest the Twins) was not offered arbitration. Also, most of the Yankees free agents other than Abreu will not be offered arbitration.
Reyes will sign some place else for 2-3 years at $2-3 mil each, which will (and should) be prohibitive for the Twins.
Renteria is no longer an above-average shortstop. I’d rather have Punto than Renteria.
[…] Around the Majors – […]
Unfortunately, he’ll be back. Nobody is going to offer little fat boy a two year contract. He was very bad last year. He’s a perfect example why era means nothing for relief pitchers.
It usually taakes NL players 2 years to adjust to the AL. Al hitters adjust quicker to the NL b/c the NL is more of a fastball league and the AL is more junkballs. Renteria was in a BAD clubhouse in Detoilet, I’d at least entertain him for 1 yr at around $4 mill. He is 10000000000000000000% better than Everett.
I know nothing about anything, therefore I have no opinion about nothing. But this I know….Twins will win the World Series next year because of their Pitching PUPS. YESSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ![]()
Someone, who knows nothing, says “Twins will win the World Series next year”.
I’d rather hear it from someone who knows SOMETHING.
I honestly think the “distinctions” between the AL and NL have narrowed significantly, especially with Interleague play.
Sure, a guy like Manny Ramirez can go from the Red Sox to Dodgers and hit like a god, but Jason Bay didn’t do too shabby moving from the NL to the AL.
Plus I would like to see some evidence which supports the theory that the NL is more of a “fastball” league and the AL is more of a “junkball” league. Last time I checked Greg Maddux and Tom Glavine were career NLers and up until last year Johan Santana has been an AL guy.
Update about free agent arbitration offers to players who might interest the Twins:
offered arbitration:
Casey Blake (3B)
not offered arbitration:
Brandon Looper (P)
Jason Isringhausen (P)
Sadly since Blake is a Type B free agent that won’t deter the Twins from continuing their “framework” discussions with Blake’s agent.
It usually takes NL players 2 years to adjust to the AL
Mike Lowell
Josh Beckett
Bobby Abreu
Carlos Quentin
Vladimir Guerrero
Joe Nathan
et al
probably disagree with that statement.
DrDon, if bloggers were pitches, you’d be the changeup. How refreshing to hear from one who knows nothing as opposed to everything.
Frank Robinson would too.
bird,
We all know nothing.
DrDon is the only one who admits it.
Are you nuts!!
Rayfull Fercull….you have to be kidding me!
We do not need that bad attitude at shortstop for the Twins.
Thankfully management knows how atrocious his attitude is and would not touch him…ever.
Good grief.
“I know nuttink”
But I have a premonition. Harris takes over at 3rd and provides a solid offensive and defensive presence.
Twins resign the ultimate utility infielder [Nick], and come up with another short and another quality reliever somehow. Everything else remains intact.[that’s a good thing]
But, then again—-”I know nuttink”
HAVE FUN !!! GO TWINS !!!
What an unheard of strategy. The starting pitchers, and the nucleus of
everyday players all come back. They get another year to stay together, continue to learn and grow as a team. Like the old days. It could be sweeeeeeeet.
HAVE FUN !!! GO TWINS !!!
A couple more interesting arbitration decisions: Juan Cruz was offered, while Adam Dunn was not.
Russ Springer wasn’t, wonder if he has any tread left?
will punto be re-signed?
Springer was probably not because either he is leaning towards retirement or he is willing to sign for less. It will be very hard to pry him from St Louis.
Yes, Punto will be resigned. I for one am all for it as long as he is used strictly as a utility guy, which is what he should be. However I worry that if anyone struggles Gardy will run Nicky out there too often.
IMO, the only economical alternative to re-signing Punto, would be to move Casilla to SS.
The FA shortstops are not worth their added cost (above the cost of Punto) and JJ Hardy will be VERY EXPENSIVE in a trade.
IMO, the Twins should re-sign Punto AND move Casilla to SS, so SS will not be one injury away from a mess. (Brendan Harris)
Harris (and Buscher) at 3B, however, will work all right for me.
Sabathia and Rameriez offered arbitration. Brewers/Dodgers almost HAD to…or else their respective front offices would be hated more than the Twins.
Buster Olney has a column about all teams are being affected by the economy. I gotta believe the Twins are affected less than most with the new stadium on the horizon and the generally lower ticket prices. I wonder if they could maybe sign a free agent this year that they normally wouldn’t be willing(able) to sign.
Stupid question, but… is anyone who is not a type A or B free agent not eligible to be offered arbitration? Or is the point of the arbitration process specifically built for the type A or B FAs and draft pick compensation?
I’m just kind of curious what was stopping us from offering Punto arbitration, if we might him back anyways.
Given the track record of the front office the past 3-4 years, and the FA market playing into the hands of aging, marginal players, it’s probably for the best they’ll be priced-out for an iffy SS/3B.
Unless they try and deal Young/Span, Perkins/Balckburn for a SS/3B, it wouldn’t surprise me if they roll with Harris/Buscher at 3B and sign some chump like Alex Cintron for SS to compete w/Tolbert and whoever else they already have in the system.
Remember, this is a club that’s only move in a competitive race was bringing back Everymeal Eddie and maintaining that 15+ million in payroll savings over 2007, despite increased revenue from MLB and the highest attendance since 1992. Expect more of the same until their share of their “generous” ballpark outlay is repaid.
By my count there will be AT LEAST 15 players making the league minimum on opening day, including the entire starting rotation.
joeiscool12,
From Cot’s Baseball Contracts:
The following players are eligible for arbitration:
Players with at least 3 but less than 6 years of Major League service time.
The top 17 percent of players with at least 2 but less than 3 years of Major League service. (See Super 2). To qualify as a Super 2, a player must have accumulated at least 86 days of service in the previous year. (A year of service is 172 days. The historical cutoff point for Super 2 status is 2 years, 128 days of service, though the requirement has been as high as 2 years, 140 days.)
Players who have filed for free agency and both received and accepted offers of arbitration from their former club.
Punto could be offered arbitration, but he would be open to better outside offers if he declined.
Often, the Twins want their FA’s to test the market, so they can have peace of mind with the Twins offer if they decide to return.
