Mauer had lower-back exam Tuesday; Twins awaiting results

FORT MYERS, FLA. — The Twins are still awaiting the results of Joe Mauer’s magnetic resonance arthrogram, though he did have the lower-back exam on Tuesday afternoon, speeding up the timetable, the team said today.

Twins physician, Dr. John Steubs, hoped to have the results this morning. He plans to consult with other doctors, with Mauer and club officials before the team comments.

Mauer has arrived at Twins camp today, though he is withholding comment until he has more information.

La Velle is in Fort Lauderdale, covering today’s game, and we will post Mauer updates on one of our blogs as soon as we get them.

Update: La Velle has the update on his blog. Manager Ron Gardenhire said Mauer has an inflamed right sacroiliac joint, which connects the spine to the pelvis.

The plan, Gardenhire said, is to have Mauer take stronger medication — presumably anti-inflammatories — and refrain from physical activity before being re-evaluated in a few days.

Mauer has yet to comment to reporters here in Fort Myers, with the team saying it would like more time to gather information and make a plan. We’ll pass more information along when we get it.

I’ll be concerned when we’re talking about regular season, not Spring Training games.

Hope everything is alright. Not just for the team’s sake, but for Mauer’s.

Never fun when you can’t figure out what’s wrong.

The handy thing for Dr. Steubs is that he doesn’t have to consult with all those other busy medical professionals. He doesn’t even need to wait for the test results. He can just log on to this blog.

Dr. Steubs’s medical advice to Mauer - Suck it up and learn to play third base!

the sooner the twins figure out that we have all the answers on this blog and there is no need to waste time on doctors and other medical people the faster things will improve.
that goes for baseball issues as well. fire smith and let us run the team!
collectively we know it all!!

He is going to be miss Spring Training, go on the DL and go to Rochester for some tune up games.
He will make the first edition of that new PBS documentary and become a household name

So worst case scenario and Joe is not ready to start the season who will be the everday catcher? I like Reddog but only as a backup not an everyday catcher.

Ha! This brings up a great question. Who would you most like to see do a rehab stint in Rochester this year so they could get on the documentary? Not to say we want to see any of the players get hurt.

mlb trade rumor has this tidbit:

Old school Twins scout Herb Stein recommended Manny, though. From the book:

“Stein pushed the Twins to take Manny with their third overall pick. But he was rebuffed by his bosses - a source of bitterness even today. The Twins chose Stanford first baseman David McCarty, who wound up hitting 36 career home runs and batting .242 in eleven major league seasons of part-time duty.”

Worst case is Joe goes on DL for a few months, Ramos tears up the league and Twins save millions when Joe becomes a free agent in 2011.

Ben W says:

Ramos will not make the team even if Mauer AND Redmond start the season on the DL.

Today’s lineups:

Denard Span, LF
Alexi Casilla, 2B
Joe Crede, 3B
Jason Kubel, DH
Michael Cuddyer, RF
Brian Buscher, 1B
Mike Redmond, C
Brendan Harris, SS
Carlos Gomez, CF

Is anyone but me concerned about Joe Crede’s lack of offensive production so far in ST? I realize it may take some time to get into a groove but to be 0 for spring training isn’t looking too good right now. Just wondering.

AaronK says:

yes, I am very concerned that over the course of 14 ABs that he will never figure out how to hit again.

:)

we have 2 other guys who can play 3b and are hitting if crede doesn’t hit, i’m more worried about nicky’s .083 ave in the wbc because we know gardy will play him no matter what he hits.

Crede did not really swing a bat in game situations for a while… so I suspect that he needs to get his timing back. He has about a month to do that (btw, he has one hit against the Netherlands team in an exhibition game). That said, he is usually on fire in the spring. Here are his ST batting averages:

2008: .135
2007: .365
2006: .313
2005: .273
2004: .357
2003: .306
2002: .380

in 2008, like now, he came back from injury and had a similar slow start. We’ll see how it goes, but it is still a bit early to tell.

the Minnesota Cat says:

ggg
Your concern over LNP’s average is warranted because we know Gardy loves him and will play him no matter what. Personally, I’m glad he went to the WBC since we’re able to look at a number of other players at SS and we certainly aren’t missing his bat. Will take a wait and see attitude with Crede.

Just do what I say, dammit.

Going Yard says:

my 2 cents - Crede will start the season at 3rd, but his bat will be completely dead. After his batting average drops below .100 (mid-May), Gardy will replace him with Busher. Busher will maintain an average over .300 and his performance at third will continue to impress. Mark these words!!!!!!

Great news sports fans - Joe Crede got his first single of the season in todays game with the Orioles.

no wonder the paper you guys work for is going broke. if all the writers manage as little content daily as you and lavelle put out….. and still pay you for having a real job…. well, that is a formula for going broke. what are you guys doing with your time?
