FORT MYERS, FLA. — Twins catcher Joe Mauer has flown to Baltimore to get a second opinion on his lower-back, General Manager Bill Smith said tonight.

Mauer will have the exam in Baltimore on Saturday. Smith said it was a mutual decision between Mauer and the Twins to get the second opinion.

The Twins diagnosed Mauer with inflammation of his right sacroiliac joint, where the spine meets the pelvis.

Smith declined to say which Baltimore doctor will examine Mauer but said the goal is to “work with our medical team, just to make sure we’re 100 percent on the same page.”
