FORT MYERS, FLA. — Joe Crede went 3-for-3 with a double and a home run, as the Twins defeated the Orioles 5-3 today at Hammond Stadium.

Philip Humber started for the Twins and pitched two scoreless innings, as the Twins snapped a four-game losing streak.

There were no postgame game updates on Joe Mauer, but the Houston Astros have reportedly signed Ivan Rodriguez to a one-year, $1.5 million contract.

Manager Ron Gardenhire said the team will cut 11 players on Tuesday morning, which will trim the spring roster from 55 to 44.

Mauer in Baltimore for second opinion

Friday, March 13th, 2009

FORT MYERS, FLA. — Twins catcher Joe Mauer has flown to Baltimore to get a second opinion on his lower-back, General Manager Bill Smith said tonight.

Mauer will have the exam in Baltimore on Saturday. Smith said it was a mutual decision between Mauer and the Twins to get the second opinion.

The Twins diagnosed Mauer with inflammation of his right sacroiliac joint, where the spine meets the pelvis.

Smith declined to say which Baltimore doctor will examine Mauer but said the goal is to “work with our medical team, just to make sure we’re 100 percent on the same page.”

Friday night lights: Twins vs. Reds

Friday, March 13th, 2009

FORT MYERS, FLA. — Francisco Liriano wishes he could start the season feeling as good as he felt in his last start against the Baltimore Orioles, as he tossed four perfect innings and struck out five on Sunday.

Tonight, Liriano will be at home, facing Jacque Jones and the Cincinnati Reds on fireworks night at Hammond Stadium.
