Postgame update: Redmond injured

Posted on April 6th, 2009 – 10:28 PM
By Joe Christensen

Mike Redmond injured his right groin on his fifth-inning double in tonight’s 6-1 loss to Seattle, a potential blow to a Twins team already missing catcher Joe Mauer.

“I’m a little concerned,” Redmond said. “A little more than normal. I never go in the training room. I’ve never pulled a muscle, or anything.”

Redmond was expected to handle most of the catching duties until Mauer returns from the disabled list. The Twins have Jose Morales on the roster, and Drew Butera at Class AAA Rochester.

“I know the situation we’re in, of course,” Redmond said. “We’re just going to wait and see and hopefully it feels better tomorrow. Hopefully it’s just a little cramp and we’ll see tomorrow.”

He survives getting hit by the broken bat behind the plate, but then gets hurt on the double. Bad luck and even worse timing.

Twins will be fine, but its concerning our best hitter hits a DP when we really needed some offense. Cuddy did at least have that single.

Young starts tomorrow hopefully. Span had an ok game, but wasn’t what we needed. The rest of the lineup looked anemic too.

so you finally agree; but yes, split decision, catching it, that’s fine. but ideally you let Liriano pitch to him. although he was serving it up tonight (I was really never sold on the guy this Spring; he’s trying to be a control pitcher and he’s not and he’s not pitching well enough to be a power pitcher either).

Tomorrow, I am hoping Blackburn shows just how good he is. So many knock him, but he is very solid. I am predicting a quality start out of him, most likely 6 innings, 2 ER, 4 K’s, 2 BB’s.

Just pasting stuff from the old thread; just saw this new one.

hopefully red isn’t down for the count. last thing we need is stolen bases against us.

Red Dawg is made of pretty stern stuff - barring absolute inability to stay upright in a crouch, I bet he goes out there.

I’m amazed at his iron will and seeming unbeatable physical constitution. If there is any way he thinks he can make it work, he’ll be behind the plate but if he’s not there, then you can darn well believe there is damage that should worry us all.

Red Dawg, feel better soon man, we need you out there.

Cuddyer is the ultimate guesser at the plate. It seems he can never adapt to the pitch. If he’s thinking slider, and it’s fastball…good night. Not what you want in a #3 hitter. Oh well, get ‘em next time.

romer says:

“…although he was serving it up tonight…”

I was at the sports bar when I thought I saw Casilla dive forward and miss a ball. They ruled it a base hit. Looked like a clear misplay to me.

And Gomez makes a mighty leap but forgets to get a glove on the ball. Result? 2 run HR. He should have caught it. He was easily in position to do so.

I believe both those were errors. Without them, Liriano went 7 complete with 2 hits and 2 earned runs.

And he was “serving it up”?

USAFChief says:

Span had an ok game, but wasn’t what we needed.

Span came to the plate four times, and was on base twice.

What exactly is it you think we “need” from the leadoff hitter?

Sheesh.

Gregor says:

April 7th, 2009 at 12:29 am

I don’t think that you can ever call a ball hit over the fence as a sure out. Gomez just jumped too soon.

If Liriano had put the ball two inches lower, it would have missed the bat. Don’t blame Gomez without blaming the pitcher for allowing it to be hit that hard.

romer says:

April 7th, 2009 at 12:39 am

“Cuddy did at least have that single.”

But he looked like a fool the previous times. Not a good looking 3-hole hitter tonight.

I believe he was tight at the plate.

Morneau and Crede aren’t ready to hit HR’s. Of course Mauer too.

And Cuddy ain’t ready to carry the team on his shoulders.

And Young wasn’t in the lineup. So it was up to Kubel and Cuddy tonight vs. Hernandez, the all-star

Cuddy will become much stronger when he bats 6th. Young will be 7th.

Crede will be much stronger later this year, and will bat 8th.

This Mauer-less squad makes the Twins look like San Diego would have looked years ago without Tony Gwynn.

Doesn’t necessarily have to be so, but no surprise.

romer says:

April 7th, 2009 at 12:43 am

“Don’t blame Gomez without blaming the pitcher for allowing it to be hit that hard.”

Gomez isn’t ready to take over the Puckett/Hunter mantel just yet. He misplayed the ball. He MISSED it. He played the fence instead of the ball. He didn’t sacrifice his body like Hunter and Puckett typically did.

He missed it. Maybe he lost it at the last split second. He missed it.

TO THE STRIB REPORTERS:

1. I still don’t know how Gardy figured Gomez had a better chance than Young against King Felix.

2. And I still don’t know if Gardy still thinks he was right.

(Personally, I was dumbfounded when I saw Young’s absence from the lineup.)

3. I still don’t know why so many relievers were trotted out.

Insomnia has me.

I don’t think Drew Butera would be the answer now. If Mauer were healthy, and Redmond went down Drew Butera would be a great backup.

Right now we need someone that might be able to hit the ball as well as call a decent game, and that means we look at our superstar in AA if Redmond is hurt for any period of time.

I am at work doing paperwork, won’t stop til I’m done, and won’t take a nap… wishing I would have had cable here so I could have watched the game because the winter made me forget just how terrible Gordo and Gladden are. The are Hawk and Whimpy meets alzheimers legions in the brain when it comes to ability. I’ve not listened to every team’s radio people, but it’s hard to imagine teams having worse than Gordon.

kirby lives says:

I agree BC. Gordo is the worst in the business. I recall moving here in 1994 after 11 years in southern california. I didn’t realize how good the announcers were there. Carneal was the greatest, but this clown is a complete moron. His voice is annoying and he can’t call a game for chit.

I sure am glad that Gardenhire had Cuddy in the three spot yesterday over DY…Man he looked good didn’t he? He got the strike out hat trick! I’m sure Gardy’s sitting at his desk today thinking “Yeah, but he drove in our only run!” Good job going with your gut feeling Gardy…Cuddy enters the game 0-12 against Hernandez, leaves 1-16 with 8 K’s.

If Crain is the go-to setup guy, Gardy has to let him face Griffey Jr. Crain could have given up those 2 runs in the 9th without Breslow and Guerrier’s help.

Span should have let that foul ball drop.

Trish says:

April 7th, 2009 at 8:16 am

Just goes to show you ST means NOTHING!
D. Young and B. Buscher had great springs but are sitting while Span and Cuddy play. Young deserves to play and start. If you are going to sit someone, sit Gomez…..
Redmond looks just like the old time catcher he is. Injured already and taking a beating.
And the middle relief is STILL the sore spot for the Twins. Time will tell.

April 7th, 2009 at 8:43 am

Boy it is sure easy to see how much we miss Mauer in that lineup in the 3 spot. I am thinking the game would have been much closer last night with him in there. He is the one that makes this lineup go.
As far as Liriano, I thought he looked pretty good overall, just made a few mistakes. He is not, however the electric pitcher we had a few years ago. He is now more of a middle of the rotation guy, or at least he looked like it last night. Good pitcher no doubt, but a Santana he is not.(after the injury anyway)

yapper says:

April 7th, 2009 at 8:43 am

One more thing. Span should start most of the time. The kid gets on base and takes good atbats. No matter how poor of a spring he had, he still is one of the guys I have most confindence in at the plate.

Andrew Kneeland says:

April 7th, 2009 at 8:45 am

Potentially a huge blow to the Twins, but knowing Red-dog - he’ll bounce back better than ever in a few days if not tonight.

tlk says:

April 7th, 2009 at 8:47 am

Redmond plays better hurt. It should be someones job to whack him upside the head or step on his hand once in a while.

Span in left made one (maybe two) lame throws to the plate. Weak and way off line. Reminded me of Shannon Stewart. Delmon may look awful taking a route to the ball but he’s got a gun and would of had a chance at the second of the two guys that Guerrier let score.
Like Span’s range though but is that enough?

Bullpen? Yikes! So clad we resigned Nathan, or we’d have no shot.

thrylos98 says:

Reddog will be fine… I wander how much the groin had to do with the passed ball, since he did not come up from the crouch fast enough…

romer -

saw your comments up toward the top regarding Liriano ‘Serving it up’.

Were you watching the game? Liriano wasn’t giving up hits but the batters were getting hard contact every at bat from the fifth inning on. The first few inning’s ground balls were turning into line-drive flyouts and you could tell he was gonna get tagged by someone. There were a lot of balls the outfielders were catching while on the run. So yes, I would say he was serving it up toward the end.

And if you didn’t notice, they were sitting on his slider. Needs to throw that changeup more. Its now his best pitch if he can locate his fastball better. There weren’t many hitters he threw a first pitch strike too. Still a work in progress (though still a better one than most).

Lets hope the bats have a pulse tonight.

TwinsNotesGuy says:

April 7th, 2009 at 9:11 am

As for the gomez play in centerfield. Ya he missed it, but did you see how hard that ball was hit? It was a laser shot and 95% of outfielders wouldn’t have even had a chance at it.

definitely not Hunter in that regard yet though.

TwinsNotesGuy says:

April 7th, 2009 at 9:14 am

Span made the right play. What would you think if on the next pitch the guy cracked a Double, or a HR?

you take the out and give up the one run, instead of giving them the chance to score more.

Elliptical says:

April 7th, 2009 at 9:15 am

Liriano looked good for us last night with excellent control and command. He got beat on a few pitches, but only the second homer was a bad pitch. Span and Casilla did very well batting 1-2, but 3-4-5-6 lost this game for us. Cuddyer does not deserve a starting job. That guy looked like AA at the plate last night.

Elliptical says:

April 7th, 2009 at 9:20 am

I agree with TwinsNotesGuy on taking the out. My first reaction was he should have let it drop, but at that point it was 1-0 with plenty of game left to play. Span didn’t make terrific throws, but he covered a lot of ground and got to some gappers other outfielders would have let drop for doubles. Get off his case. Cuddyer misplayed Beltre’s double off the baggy. Why are the Span haters not bringing that play up?

Ben W says:

April 7th, 2009 at 9:28 am

Check out twinsgeek.blogspot.com for some numbers on letting the ball drop vs. catching the ball. I’m not a Span hater, I just think he should have let the ball drop.

I was more upset by Gardy’s chessmaster bullpen moves in the 9th anyway.

trish says:

April 7th, 2009 at 9:36 am

Gomez looked like he was worried about the wall that was there. I’m giving him the benefit of the doubt since he only had one practice in the metrodome before yesterday. Yes, he played it last year but he has been in Florida where it was a lot different. We still got 161 more games to go. that’s the good news.

thrylos98 says:

April 7th, 2009 at 9:44 am

Nobody should be expected to catch a home run over the fence. One of the best at it, Kibry, got only to about a third of those balls. And that one yesterday was a line drive that was going out fast, not a fly that died half a foot over the fence (the latter are easier to grab)

birdofprey says:

April 7th, 2009 at 9:53 am

Survey 100 MLB coaches and managers about getting that 2nd out in the 3rd inning, especially when a perfect throw nails the runner at home, and maybe one would say Span should have let it drop. That one guy is not long for the profession.

Ben W says:

April 7th, 2009 at 9:59 am

BOP, I don’t know what you’re trying to say.

It sounds like you think Span had a shot to throw out Beltre at home, which as a left-handed throwing left fielder catching a ball in foul territory, was very unlikely.

sane says:

April 7th, 2009 at 9:59 am

“Lets hope the bats have a pulse tonight”

That would be terribly distracting for the batters.

trish says:

April 7th, 2009 at 10:16 am

I got remarks from the game up on my blog. in case anyone wants to read.

TwinsNotesGuy says:

April 7th, 2009 at 10:28 am

twinsgeek makes a somewhat good point, but the 2% difference in win probability he talks about amounts to almost nothing in reality when talking about Denards catch.

I would point out he also says the ball was about 25 feet into foul territory which is way wrong. Span caught that ball on the run about a foot past the foul line…

But still, we’d all be saying why didn’t span catch it if we let Lopez take another swing and he got an RBI hit or worse…

Elliptical says:

April 7th, 2009 at 10:35 am

Span’s catch seems like a silly play to second guess. I’m questioning why we didn’t see more bunting, base stealing, “Twins-style” baseball. Cuddy should’ve bunted in the first to move Span and Casilla over for Morneau. Not a single stolen base attempt last night with all the speed in that lineup against a tough pitcher. Doesn’t make much sense.

Ben W says:

April 7th, 2009 at 10:36 am

2% win probability means a lot when the game is still within reach. Not so much when the game is in hand.

sid says:

April 7th, 2009 at 10:36 am

“When was the last time that all of the relievers pitched in a game?”

Breslow, Crain and Guerrier had not pitched since Friday (Two days off).

Ayala had not pitched since Thursday (three days off).

Those complaining about Gardy “burning out” the bullpen are clueless as usual.

All four relievers were due (Ayala overdue) for the work.

The critics are going to pull something if they have to stretch THAT FAR to criticize Gardenhire and Anderson.

Actually they SHOULD pull something out of their something.

tlk says:

April 7th, 2009 at 11:06 am

My post about Span’s lame throw wasn’t about the fly ball he caught in foul territory. He should of caught that one. Maybe late in the 9th of a one run game you let it drop and give the pitcher a chance for a strikeout that takes away the sacrafice. But in the 3rd, take the out.

The throw I was talking about was when Guerier (sp?) gave up a hit that went between a diving Crede to his left and a diving Punto to his right. Span Charged the ball and picked it up in fairly shallow left and his throw was weak and way off line. I’m not a Span hater. I was just struck by how much it was like Stewart.

TwinsNotesGuy says:

April 7th, 2009 at 11:44 am

tlk - that has been the knock on Denard all along. He’s got no arm out there. with Young, Gomez, and Cuddyer in the outfield not many runners will try to take an extra base on the Twins. They’ll try on Span almost every time.

T says:

April 7th, 2009 at 12:29 pm

definitely not Hunter in that regard yet though.

Would Hunter have been fast enough to get in position for that?

T says:

April 7th, 2009 at 12:30 pm

Cuddy should’ve bunted in the first to move Span and Casilla over for Morneau.

While the M’s wouldn’t have expected it…Cuddy isn’t paid to bunt. That early in the game you want your power hitters up there to do just that. Hit.

Let him bunt later on if need be…but not in the 3rd friggin’ inning.
