Thursday lineups: Twins vs. Mariners
Posted on April 9th, 2009 – 9:55 AMBy Joe Christensen
Mike Redmond and Delmon Young are back in the Twins’ lineup for today’s matinee against Seattle, and Joe Crede will start his fourth straight game.
Brendan Harris is subbing for shortstop Nick Punto, who is 2-for-13 in his career off Mariners starter Jarrod Washburn.
Young is the DH, with Denard Span in left field, Carlos Gomez in center and Michael Cuddyer in right.
Updates to come…
Update: The Twins observed a moment of silence before the game for Angels pitcher Nick Adenhart, who was killed in a car crash after pitching last night. So sad.
Update: Manager Ron Gardenhire said Brendan Harris was going to either play shortstop or third base today. Gardenhire checked with Crede, who said he felt good, so Crede stayed at third base and Harris replaced Nick Punto at shortstop.
That doesn’t mean Crede is going to keep playing every day.
“He’ll get his moments,” Gardenhire said. “I’m looking at the DH time. He’s going to have to go through a lot [in Chicago] this weekend, so he’ll get his moments, a day or two where he might need a blow. So we’ll see. Right now, he feels good. We’ll protect him as we go.”
Update: Gardenhire said the Twins have Joe Mauer’s rehab program mapped out so they can predict exactly how much progress he’ll make each day. They even have a target date for his return. Of course, they’re not telling the press.
“We’re not going to announce any of that because things change,” Gardenhire said.
Mauer hit a home run during batting practice Wednesday for the Class A Fort Myers Miracle. He also caught Scott Baker’s bullpen session. He’s been running in the pool, to keep pressure off his inflamed sacroiliac joint, and this is designed to get him running on dry land.
“He’s champing at the bit to go harder,” Gardenhire said. “It’s under control. We want no hostile takeovers down there. That’s why we write the program because sometimes a big leaguer can go down there and say I’m going to do this today.”
