Wednesday lineups: Twins/Rays

Posted on April 29th, 2009 – 3:47 PM
By Joe Christensen

Here are tonight’s starting lineups. (Updates to come.)

Update: Mike Redmond had an MRI exam on his right shoulder, and is available tonight only as an emergency catcher, Manager Ron Gardenhire said.

Redmond said he’s hoping he’s ready to play by Friday, but everyone knows that’s when Joe Mauer will be activated from the disabled list.

Redmond said his groin injury hasn’t bothered him since the first weekend of the season, but the shoulder has been affecting his throws all season.

Asked about the MRI, Redmond said, “They found a Bud Light in there.” No, he hasn’t lost his sense of humor. His last trip to the disabled list was in 1998, and he’s in no hurry to go back.

(*) Jesse Crain (right shoulder stiffness) felt good in a bullpen session, and could be activated from the DL by Tuesday. Crain will throw bullpen sessions Friday and Sunday before the Twins set a target date.

(*) Manager Ron Gardenhire said he’s leaning toward putting Mauer right back in the No. 3 spot, when he returns. The hope is that Alexi Casilla will rediscover his form from last year in the No. 2 spot.

(*) Mauer will be in the Metrodome tonight getting final clearance from team doctors to come off the DL.

Who goes to Rochester to make room for Mauer?

Morales? Buscher? or Gomez?

Morales might have to DH, with Kubel in the OF!

bufftwins says:

April 29th, 2009 at 3:52 pm

Thought Kubel might get tonight off with a tough lefty on the hill. Cuddyer needs to get going in a hurry.

Willie Norwood says:

April 29th, 2009 at 3:57 pm

No Punto. Was that a pig that just flew by my window?

Rob says:

April 29th, 2009 at 3:57 pm

Id side with Thrylos on this one and say, if Morales stays Buscher has to go. You cant have 3 bench guys (red, busch, jose) that have very limited defensive options.

Jason says:

April 29th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

i saw a pig fly past mine too, Willie.

This is the lineup to go with….no arguments here. Cuddy should break out of it tonight, you would think.

trish says:

April 29th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

Glad to see Casilla hitting 9th tonight. And excited to see Harris in for Punto!

SweetOne says:

April 29th, 2009 at 3:59 pm

The only way Morales stays is if Redmond goes to the DL.

Jason says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:00 pm

How about one of the relievers, Seth?

We can jettison one of those until Crain gets back, right?

Willie Norwood says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

I like the lineup although I might put Morales higher up and Cuddsy lower. But I’m not greedy.

trish says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

Willie,

It’s only a pig when it is Cuddy out of the line-up. Must of been something else…

btw… might not want a flying pig with the swine flu and such ;)

Jeremy says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:01 pm

It should be Gomez, although I’d be shocked if the trigger was pulled on that.

The easy choice is Morales, and I think that’s how BS rolls.

Jason says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

yeah, don’t push it Willie. I applaud Gardy for this lineup! Now let’s rock the Kazmir.

Ben W says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Aw, no Punto? Otherwise I would have totally nailed this lineup.

Punto must have bowled a really bad game.

Willie Norwood says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:02 pm

My alternative cliche was that I just got hit in the head with a snowball tossed by Satan. I didn’t want to go there either.

Jason says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:03 pm

trish, if it were Cuddy, we wouldn’t bother with the baseball game tonight because that would mean an asteroid is heading straight for Earth!

the Minnesota Cat says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:06 pm

willieN

Good call on the flying pig because I can’t believe that LNP isn’t starting tonight either. Next thing you know Gardy will do something radical and bench Cuddy and Punto and then what will we have to complain about. Go Twins and let’s get a win!

AT says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

K-uddyer break out tonight…? Isn’t he 0-10 against Kazmir?

romer says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:09 pm

Whew! I can cool off and look at the lineups……..

Kazmir has been walking a lot batters. Will Cuddy and Kubel lay off and take the walks to see if Crede, Morales, and Young can pick up the slack?

Walter Johnson says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:10 pm

I’d bat Morales 2nd, but other than that, this lineup is a winner. At least it smells better.

thrylos98 says:

the Minnesota Cat says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:16 pm

I’ve always thought there’s a fine line between bravery and stupidity. I think the same can apply to “being due” and “Oh no, Cuddyer’s up to bat again”!

Kojis72 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:17 pm

All three catchers stay thru the Home stand, to allow Mauer a short catching night if there is a game that is a blow out by 7th inning, then Red to the DH for 15 days for R&R, then if morales is still hot Red is released, if not Morales goes to Rochester until September or injury to a catcher. But Red is gone by 2010.

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

Who goes to Rochester to make room for Mauer?

Morales? Buscher? or Gomez?

I think that Buscher or Redmond go. It does not make sense to a. not play and b. demote the best center fielder in the AL. Morales is the hottest bat in the team right now and they should keep him until he gets hot. This is the beauty of options: Keep the hottest people in the 40-man roster up. If Morales cools off, get the hottest person from Rochester up for 2 weeks.

On another note, I think that what happens when Crain returns will also be very interesting. The conventional wisdom is that that either Morillo gets cut or Mijares gets to Rochester. I would not be surprised if Dickey goes to Rochester and they use Guerrier as the long man. On the other hand, the best case scenario would be to find a way to keep Morillo in the organization and send him to Rochester to work with Cuellar on developing a change. He just has way too much upside. How can they do that? Sign him to a 2 year contract for slightly more than he makes now for this year and the second year full of incentives and ask him to accept the assignment to Rochester.

Jason says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:18 pm

holding me to what? Guaranteeing a big night by Cuddyer?

That’s only a hunch, folks. I wouldn’t be surprised in the least if he went 0-for-4

Gardy says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:21 pm

Kubes has been hot so this is a good time to put him in against Kazmir who could very well put Kubes into a 2 week slump. You guys have to have something to bitch about.
It’ll be more than pigs flying IF Cuddy sits!

Dave says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Cuddy is worthless, why he remains in the line up just goes to show how over rate Gardy is….

outfield: Young,Span,Kubel
Infield: Crede, Putz, Harris, Justin
Catcher: Joe
DH: Buscher

A82Bomb says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:22 pm

Redmond goes to DL or Gomez goes to AAA or Morales goes to AAA

That’s what I think will (hope in that order) happen on Friday when Mauer comes back.

Rob says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:23 pm

Thrylos, he needs to control his fastball before he learns a good change. You should know that…

SweetOne says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Kojis,

Who do you get rid for the 3 KC games? Morillo and then DL Redmond when Crain comes back?

If you plan on DL Redmond, you would do it now and not wait 3 more games.

mnwin says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

Release Redman, and make him the assistant bullpen coach.

Rob says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:24 pm

and come on thry, red isnt going to AAA!!! man im losing respect for your bb knowledge…

SweetOne says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

Thrylos,

Signing Morillo to a 2-yr contract is irrelevant. He would have to clear waivers before he has the option of accepting the assignment to Rochester.

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:27 pm

Rob,

Red, is not going to AAA, but he might just be “going”…

Morillo other than the Boston game when it was wet and raining and the ball and mount were slippery has shown pretty good control with the FB.

The only way Morales stays is if Redmond goes to the DL.

Hey, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again. Morales is going to keep playing everyday until Joe comes. Then RedDog will be DL’d effective last Saturday. It’s pretty simple while Morales plays, Joe is coming, and our 3rd catcher only misses a few days. Then when GoGo comes back after becoming a new daddy, then it’s decision time…not until then.

SethSpeaks says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:29 pm

Thrylos - signing him to a long-term contract doesn’t take away the need for him to clear waivers to be sent down. I think there would be as much chance of him clearing if he makes league minimum as if he makes $450,000.

Also, Dickey would still have to clear waivers as well. I don’t know if I would worry about losing him as much as Morillo (who I would really like to stick around), but that should factor in.

A82Bomb says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:30 pm

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:35 pm

He would have to clear waivers before he has the option of accepting the assignment to Rochester.

I am not so sure about that. Steve Trachsel was sent to the minors by the Mets in 2001 without passing waivers and they are considering doing the same with Oliver Perez this season (both players out of options.) All he had to do was accept the assignment. I don’t know whether there is a certain language in a contract or whether you can do it only during the first year of multi-year contract, but there seems to be a loophole there for which I do not know the specifics. If that is not an option, they can do a Willis-type DL stint, but they got to pay the guy to accept…

mnwin says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

Grab a beer Gardy.
Redmond will coach after his playing days, might as well start asap.

pilver says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

Punto sucks, why did gardy not have him bunt in the 5th last night? Cuddy is also very weak, should have moved him 2 years ago…

Dars says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:36 pm

I’ve heard nothing about Redmond being Dl’d but it would make sense right now. Kudos to Morales for making this decision tough on them. There aren’t many other options tonight besides having Cuddy in the lineup folks. He will put together better at bats then Buscher (as difficult as that is to realize right now). I’m confident Cuddy will get things turned around. It may not be tonight as Kazmir is tought. Let’s hope Blackburn can throw a solid game and we can get to Scott.

Terry Felton says:

thrylos98 says:

does he with a split contract? I thought that he just has to accept the assignment

Dars says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:39 pm

thrylos98. Trachsel and Perez are and were in completely different contract situations as far as contract status than Morillo. If they were to send him to Rochester he would absolutely have to pass through waivers which could very well happen. There is no possible way they could sign him and ask him to accept a demotion without him going through waivers.

DrDon says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:40 pm

Dickey would not have to clear waivers. He signed a 2-way deal so they could send him straight to ROch.

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:41 pm

Trachsel and Perez are and were in completely different contract situations as far as contract status than Morillo.

agreed. Thus, the need to sign him to a more than a year contract.

Dars says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:42 pm

Those guys are veterans that aren’t arbitration eligible anymore. Morillo is. That is the difference.

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Dars,

so in order to be able to do that, they would need to sign him to a contact that would cover his arbitration years, correct?

Walter Johnson says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:45 pm

I don’t think you DL Redmond with Mauer just coming back from an injury. I think if they keep Morales it will be as a third catcher.

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:47 pm

In other words, someone like Cuddyer and Baker could potentially be sent to Rochester if they accept the assignment?

howeda says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:48 pm

The only way they can keep 3 catchers is if they go back to 11 pitchers. I just can’t see them releasing Redmond at this point.

Even if it makes baseball sense I think they fear what releasing one of the only vocal leaders this team has and a very popular guy in the clubhouse might do to team chemistry. In addition if Mauer should come up lame a week from now, we would really be in a bad spot regardless of how well Morales is playing.

The DL thing is an option. But frankly, he’s already been quoted saying he’s fine and he hasn’t played in several days. MLB is pretty lenient on this, but even they might raise thier eyebrows at such a move.

I fear that regardless of how well Morales is playing, he’s going to be the odd man out. I would suggest sending DFA’ing Morillo at least initially. Crain may be ready to come back by Sunday, but at least you buy yourself those 2-3 days.

Walter Johnson says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

Lose Dickey.

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Lose Dickey.

it might actually just come to that, because Mijares seems to be ok and Morillo just has too much upside and has been as effective as Dickey lately.

PDX Twin says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:52 pm

Starting Morales tonight might be a clue. With Redmond not having played since Saturday, he could be back-dated to the DL and brought back in 10 days if he’s needed.

Greg says:

April 29th, 2009 at 4:56 pm

Love it more. critics. Should jsut get Joe C. put a poll out as to who would be going.

None of the choices above make any sense.

Not going to send Cuddyer, Baker, Dickey,

Redmond to the DL just delays the inevitable.

Win Twins!

Rob says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:00 pm

thrylos, Morillo does throw very hard. However do you think the Twins just made some huge discovery by signing him? He is 25 so Im guessing he has been in pro ball for about 7 years, if he cant control his fastball after 7 years of pro coaching, it will probably never happen.

DrDon says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Greg…Joe C. knows more about this than any of us novices out here. But he ain’t gonna tell us, because he is having a blast reading our nonsense. In fact, once something happens, Joe C. will summarize his various articles and will therefore show us his wherewithall.

USAFChief says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:06 pm

1. Neither Morillo nor Dickey can be sent to the minors without clearing wavers. Neither has options left. Why do you think Colorado didn’t send Morillo to the minors? He had to pass through waivers, and the Twins claimed him. The ’split contract’ Dickey signed would have allowed the Twins to send him to Rochester before opening day. Once he’s on the 25 man roster, he needs to clear waivers like anyone else.

2. Reddog hasn’t played since Saturday. Seems to me that’s not a coincidence and it’s likely he’ll be retroactively placed on the DL on Friday when Mauer returns, he’d be eligible to come off on May 11th. They get another week and a half to determine if Morales is the real thing, and can survive for a week and a half if Mauer can’t catch more than every other day.

3. IMO the situation last night with two runners on, with Morales at bat, was a straight double steal. Both runners were moving on the 0-1 count, Morales fouled off the pitch. I don’t think that was a hit and run, you don’t call a hit and run with 2 on and 2 out. Morales was expected to take the pitch but fouled off a pitch at his ankles. I’m pretty sure the double steal would have been succesful, as everyone was surprised and Delmon got a great jump off second. You could see Gardy was pretty pi$$id off that Morales swung at the pitch and messed up the double steal. Then later in the AB, Delmon decided to go on his own (which is why the trail runner didn’t go), and with the element of surprise gone, was dead meat.

Dars says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:11 pm

USAFChief. You are right no Morillo but not Dickey. Look it up. Dickey signed a 2 way deal. He wasn’t even on the 40 man until opening day. They could send him to the minors without risking losing him (not that they would). My vote would be to send Dickey to the minors. The only risk for that is then you don’t have a real innings eater except maybe using Guerrier in that role but you are still going to need him in some late inning situations, especially with Crain’s injury. Thrylos98….I’m not sure if they can sign him to buy his arb years out or not to send him down. I believe that Cuddy or Redmond would have to be DFA’d as well. This is kind of a confusing process with contractual status but I am almost positive this is how it all works.

DrDon says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:11 pm

Chief…you said, and I quote:

“Reddog hasn’t played since Saturday. That is exactly what I have been saying for several days now. You are right on the money. Good job.

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:12 pm

Rob,

Morillo has shown decent control of his fastball this season.

against the Angels he threw 12 FB 75% for strikes 1 slider (was a strike)

in Boston he threw 11 FB 18.2% for strikes and 5 sliders 20% for strikes

against the Rays he threw 12 FB 67% for strikes

Take away the Boston game when he pitched in crappy conditions and he has been fine (71% of FB for strikes). He needs to develop and throw secondary pitches.

pilver says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:14 pm

DrDon no I can’t change it now, a 2 year deal for Punto. Nice. Maybe he will hit in the new park. I can still bitch about it… Cuddy, he will come around, when Jly when we are 15 games back in a bad division. He most have photo’s on Gardy

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:14 pm

Morillo cannot be sent down as is.

He could be sent down is he signs a new multi-year contract. What kind of contract and for how many years, I am not sure… but there are examples of players who were sent down without passing waivers if they accepted the assignment.

E7 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:16 pm

Stelly retires, Red becomes bullpen coach….and Gomez goes to AAA. If you need another outfielder, call up Dustin Martin. He’s only hitting .281 - but leading the team in Rochester. I question whether Go-go could even hit .281 in Triple A anymore. He’s a wreck mentally and has never been able to figure out the hand-eye coordination. Too bad, he is a good fielder. A change of scenery/wake up call might help him, but I still think I’d trade him if the right opportunity ever came along. So, the Santana trade is a bust…that’s what you get when you know you won’t re-sign a guy…a hanfdful of cast-offs and hope you get lucky on one.

BC.Beneke says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:20 pm

I am not picking on Punto by calling him names or anything like that. He is not having good atbats, and his luck has been bad when he does hit the ball hard. He is still making the plays defensively so I think a demotion is maybe in order to having him back to a super sub. He was one of the best backups in the league, but he just struggles for some reason either in Odd years, or as a starter. I don’t know if Harris will be the answer at SS, but he isn’t going to kill the team. Punto on the bench gives this team more versatility.

And as for who goes down on Friday, Morales will go down because he needs to play every day to become a better catcher. I love his bat, and he’s proven he can hit major league pitching. However, with Mauer here, He’s only going to get a very limited amount of atbats.

The other possibility is putting Red on the DL with a phantom injury?

JB says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:21 pm

Really glad to see Harris in the lineup tonight. I’d be shocked to see Morales go down. He is one of the only consistant hitter right now. I seriously think it will be Gomez.

pilver says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:28 pm

Morales is here to stay, to bad for Red, he will get released at some point of Mauer is indeed healthy, which insiders say is questionable for the long haul. Punto is a 7/8 inning d replacement, not an everyday player. Having Tampa in town reminds me of what a bad deal the Garza trade was.

If he figures it out Ill be the first to say Im sorry to you.

Keeping R A Dickey over Morillo is lunacy.

People keep saying he can pitch every day, pitch multiple innings, finish off blowouts, etc.

Setting aside the fact he doesn’t get hitters out, he doesn’t even do what his supporters keep saying he is on the team to do.

He hasn’t finished off blowouts. He’s only finished two games, and one of those was the game in Boston that got called after 7, and he only faced three batters. He’s pitched fewer innings in relief than Guerrier, Crain, Nathan, and Ayala.

Morillo is worth keeping around for what he might become.

R A Dickey isn’t worth keeping around for anything.

mj1 says:

its insane to think that redman will be released this year ….he is the backup catcher…i also like this new kid, but he is not the second coming of johnny bench for gods sake…he is a converted infielder who needs to learn to catch..not sit on the bench and watch mauer play…he needs all of this year at least at AAA to learn the catching job so he might be able to someday throw a guy out at 2nd base maybe…so lets stop all the nonsense about redman and get on with it…

Zack says:

People saying send Gomez to AAA are smokin’ the good stuff apparently. Gomez is no worse at the plate than Cuddy, but he is an infinitely better fielder. He has way more upside, and I think he’s far more in need of ABs than Cuddy. Same goes for Young. Young is pretty brutal in the field but for god’s sakes let’s try him in right. I think he has better chance handling balls richocheting off the baggie than the huge left field where he’s never looked comfortable.

But hey this will never happen. When Mauer comes back, I say we DFA Cuddyer.

Hell, I’d take Morales at SS. :)

USAFChief says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:51 pm

You are right no Morillo but not Dickey. Look it up. Dickey signed a 2 way deal. He wasn’t even on the 40 man until opening day

Right. But now he IS on the 40 man. More importantly, he’s on the 25 man.

I’m pretty sure that: Players on the 25 man roster, with no options left, need to pass through waivers to be sent to the minors. There is also a requirement for players with a certain amount of big league service time to accept a minor league assignment, but that is a separate issue.

Which is no big deal to me, since, a) I doubt anyone would claim Dickey, and b) I’d be relieved if someone DID claim Dickey.

DrDon says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:54 pm

mj1…let’s look at the overall picture regarding Moralles…How many times is he now going to the mound to talk to his pitcher and settling him down? So far, quite a few. Joe does it, RedDog does it, and now Jose is doing it. That is what a catcher does. Last night, Jose went out, next pitch a DP. The past? yes, for sure. But that is a sign of good things to come. Go Twins!!!!!!!!!!!

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:58 pm

I’d take Morales at SS

So did the Twins in the 3rd round of the 2001 draft. He was drafted as a SS.

Strutz says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

Not to mention that Mauer’s health is not a sure thing. If he goes down again and we have released Redman, we are sitting on two rookie catchers. Morales has been a lot of fun to watch and looks like he has a future with this team, but I can not imagine a scenario where the Twins would release Redman.

The DL stint does seem to make sense though, give Red a chance to get to rest his legs and get to 100% while keeping Morales’ hot bat in the lineup while Mauer eases his way back into catching every day. When Redman comes off the DL, Mauer is hopefully back to catching four or five games a week, and Morales can go down to Rochester where he can catch everyday and continue to work on defense.

JimCrikket says:

April 29th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

From a brief scanning of these comments, I can only conclude two things for certain.

1) On Friday, when Mauer returns, someone currently on the 25 man roster will have to be DFA’d, demoted, or released; and

2) Whoever that unfortunate soul may be, 80% of the comments here will be critical of the decision.

Strutz says:

April 29th, 2009 at 6:02 pm

Well said JC.

Paul says:

April 29th, 2009 at 6:08 pm

Few things:

Morales.
Destined to be the backup for the Twins. With Maurer in front and Ramos behind that’s his future. Might just as well start now while he’s hot. And Red wants to coach. And deserves to coach. Down in rookie or A ball till he pays his dues.

Morillo.
Havn’t seen him yet. But if he finishes his FB well, a la Garza or Wood, he’s worth trying to fix. If it’s straight, he’s 25 yrs old, let him help someone else.

Harris.
Luv this guy. But he ain’t no ML SS. give him some time there to keep his head in the game. But the 5-6 and the 4-6 holes are just too big with him out there full time. If we could put him and Punto in a blender and get a hybrid, cool. But we can’t. So, gotta go with the glove.

Less Cuddyer says:

April 29th, 2009 at 6:10 pm

Yeah, why not? Definitely send Gomez, the best defensive CF in the league down to AAA…Makes sense to me. Great baseball sense and management.

Tim Tuefel says:

April 29th, 2009 at 6:10 pm

Shaitan says:

April 29th, 2009 at 6:24 pm

No way the Twins keep 3 catchers, and I don’t see them releasing Redmond. Morales needs conditioning on his defense in AAA.

What’s Morillo’s upside? I’m thinking Mike MacDougal, which isn’t really a complement. But he’s only pitched 2+ innings, so it’s hard to gauge. I can see sending Dickey to AAA until the Twins sort out if Ayala, Morillo, or even Guerrier are worth keeping.

trish says:

April 29th, 2009 at 6:24 pm

By the way… anyone catch the Brewers game? The pitcher had to take matters into his own hands because the other 8 players decided not to show up and hit a homerun to give the brewers the 1-0 lead and eventually the final score.

Strutz says:

April 29th, 2009 at 6:26 pm

Concerning Jim’s 5:59 comment:
This is either because everyone is so terrible right now, we cant agree on who sucks the most, or we have decent enough lineup that nobody wants to give up anyone else. I’ll play the optimist and say the latter. Clearly, there are several guys who are underperforming (Cuddyer, Gomez) but hopefully Gardy can find a way to help them snap out of it. I seriously doubt if any of these players will ever meet our bloated expectations, but at least we have a team with enough potnential to keep every game interesting.

Cuddyer vs Kazmir

1-for-10, 5 K

I’m glad he’s in there!

JimCrikket says:

April 29th, 2009 at 6:42 pm

And his problem has been that with “only” Morneau hitting behind him, he hasn’t been getting anything to hit? LOL

Strutz, to a degree, I think your optimistic slant is correct (at least by comparison to previous years).

The guys off to the slowest starts are, generally, players that you know are not going anywhere. So the choices come down to several players that all have at least some potential redeeming value.

I don’t see Gardy going with 11 pitchers, although I suppose he MIGHT risk it for a week or so until Crain also comes off the DL.

Realistically, though, if you assume that Mauer coming back means one of the other position players has to go, it has to come down to Morales (to Rochester) or Redmond (to the DL). If you keep Morales, then RedDog really has no role with the team right now. He’s not going to pinch hit or pinch run for anyone.

If Redmond is arguably not 100%, then the logical decision is a DL stint for him.

DrDon says:

Wouldn’t it be great if Morillo turned into the real thing? But don’t get your hopes up, friends. Contradicting the opinion that Morillo has had decent control of his fastball in his three outings are the facts: 17 strikes, 18 balls. Hardly decent control. The fact that one of the games was played in harsh conditions may, or may not have skewed the numbers, and also supports the notion that it’s a little early to get your dobber down or your hopes up regarding this intriguing young fireballer. But we can hope.

Two more things. One, you’re a pretty girl either way, blond or not. Two, in the picture of you and LNP you appear to be about 4″ taller than him. I think that makes you 6 ft. Cool. But “tiny dancer”?

bop, the one encouraging thing about Morillo is that his one bad performance was during the rain and the mound was a mess. Pretty hard for anyone to have pinpoint accuracy when your landing foot is sliding around and that’s just exponentially worse when the pitcher is prone to control issues in the fist place.

I’m willing to write that appearance off, for now. Not saying we have a sure thing on our hands by any means, but I want to see more of him before suggesting he be shown the door.

werbellik says:

I’ve noticed the past couple of nights that after getting a walk, Cuddyer tosses his bat and then takes a couple of steps towards first base before he removes his shin protector. Do you think he consciously does that? I’m wondering why he doesn’t take it off right in the batters box. Seems quirky to me..

romer says:

April 29th, 2009 at 8:12 pm

“… I would not give up your day job quite yet.”

Werbs, Don ain’t onstage, he’s at the bar. It’s a stream-of-conscious thing.

One of the funniest comedy events I ever saw on TV was when Bill Murray was a little drunk and did ad hoc color commentary in the booth with Harry Carey and crew on a Cubs telecast.

He killed! I bet on paper it wasn’t hilarious though. Because it became a running gag which draws people empathetically in.

You dig?

jason,

“I just peeked at the Rochester Red Wings statistics What the heck is going on down there???”

It’s early, and Swarzak is about the only player to get excited about at AAA now that Mijares has arrived. But you never know. Jose Morales is proof of that. The talent seems to be concentrated in Advance A ball, but we have players to watch at every level-for a change. At AAA, Plouffe may be emerging, and Swarzak, but the others look like players with some limits. I’d love to hear others’ opinions, as mine are suspect, I have to admit.

Ever chugged any Red White & Blue out of the can? What was it, 15 cents a can?

I knew a guy who would but exactly 1 tsp of Everclear in it, changing it from horribly 3.2 beer to strong with a sweet taste. Some of the best beer I’ve ever tasted.

And I drank German beer in Germany for 22 mos and can’t stand American swill (Sorry DrDon).

Is there anyone who still thinks Brendan Harris shouldn’t be playing almost everyday right now (if not everyone)?

romer says:

April 29th, 2009 at 9:35 pm

Another hit for Harris.

Enjoy the pine, Lexi. I’ll miss ya.

DrDon says:

D: you asked, “is that what it was before gluek?”

Back in my day, Gluek Stite was the real McCoy…We called it the “Green Death”. More bounce to the ounce.

trish says:

All in favor of Harris playing everyday…

I!!!!!!!!!!

DrDon,

“You obviously never had to suffer through a case of Buckhorn.”

Suffer? What the hell you talking about? Buckhorn was the only beer the Colonel (my dad) didn’t feel compelled to account for. Therefore, my acquired taste for the fine stuff at an early age….

Crap… he did that on purpose…

Kirby,

I think Alexi Casilla and his .174 average and Nick Punto and his .228 average should definitely be in there, who needs a guy that hits .350.

Eddie Shore says:

Finish ‘em off Ayala.

romer says:

April 29th, 2009 at 9:40 pm

Gardy obviously has no sense of humor or sense of fair play:

No Nathan in the 8th, no Morilla in the 9th.

DrDon says:

April 29th, 2009 at 9:40 pm

trish…..you said….

“Good call. I do like my beer”

Me too. I am an expert…call me sometime, we will do a taste test contest.

romer will be our judge, in beautiful downtown Tracy MN.

birdofprey says:

If pitchers were beers, Ayala would be a Hauenstein.

Eddie Shore says:

April 29th, 2009 at 9:42 pm

How about a nice double play to end it.

romer says:

April 29th, 2009 at 9:43 pm

Ayayla making the team for good. He’s looked strong and in control the last 3 or 4 appearances.

gatty790 says:

I must say that Morales looks like a spider behind the plate with the way he moves…

birdofprey says:

Liriano? Dos Equis.

Eddie Shore says:

romer says:

Delmon looking like Daddy Twitters again trying to judge a play.

I still say he runs funny.

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 9:45 pm

Delmon looked a bit Buscherish at that play

Take a nap + watch the twins = good evening…

bisonaudit says:

April 29th, 2009 at 9:46 pm

Yeah, because he would have looked so much better if he’d have made a stupid dive with a 6 run lead, let it get behind him and watched Crawford burn around the bases as it rolled into the corner.

bisonaudit says:

April 29th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

something about discretion and valor?

thrylos98 says:

April 29th, 2009 at 9:47 pm

bison,

I mean the smacking the ball down instead of catching it part… no dives allowed at that point of the game unless one is Nick Punto

bisonaudit says:

April 29th, 2009 at 9:50 pm

Just so it doesn’t get past him. All he’s doing is playing catcher there. Glove or body it doesn’t matter.

G’night everyone, especially you, Dr.

And Mark, come back (to Howard’s blog) when you’re not so crabby. (We’ve all hadour moments….)

DrDon says:

April 29th, 2009 at 10:03 pm

romer….mark started out being crabby, till some of us called his bluff. He came around, and I, for one, would like to see him back. As long as he doesn’t personally attack us as “idiots”. :-)

T says:

So Kubel 1-5 tonight, but then again, aside from Span, Harris, and Morneau there were only three hits (Kubel, Crede, Cuddyer)

Young, Morales, Casilla all went hitless. I think it’s time for Casilla to get some bench time.

DrDon says:

April 29th, 2009 at 10:43 pm

yep T, you are right on the money, Twins win and some still find individual bitching things. Let’s see, if Span went 4 for 4, Casilla, 0 for 4, Morneau 4 for 4, etc, etc, etc. bench Casilla??? I can’t believe the nonsense of the little kids who belong in bed by now.

GENO says:

April 29th, 2009 at 10:46 pm

We have to find a way to get Harris on the field more often,he is just a professional hitter. His range is somewhat limited, but so what, you can’t have 8 gold glovers out there. If we did,our team batting ave would threaten the Mendoza line!
