Game 1 called because of rain

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

BOSTON — They have called Game 1 because of rain, so the Red Sox win, 10-1, in seven innings.

Game 2 is still scheduled for 6:10 p.m. (Central) though rain is in the forecast.

Updates to come…

Update (3:55 p.m.): I returned to the pressbox from the clubhouse and a giant rainbow was right in my view of the Boston skyline. Pretty spectacular.

But it was fleeting. It has clouded right back up again. They were starting to take the tarp off the field, but are putting it back down again.

Meanwhile, in the clubhouse both Manager Ron Gardenhire and Scott Baker insisted he is physically sound, that there are no issues with his right shoulder, that he simply needs to keep the ball down more.

More on that later. Waiting for Game 2 lineups. Gardy mentioned that if this one gets rained out tonight, they would play mid-afternoon Thursday.

Update (4:50 p.m.): Still raining. I hear it’s nice in Minnesota, though. Still waiting on Game 2 lineups. Here are some quotes from Game 1:

Gardenhire on the decision to call the game: “Definitely the score of the game makes it a little easier to [call it]. What are you going to say? You’re down 10-1 with men on second and third. I told [Red Sox manager Terry Francona], ‘I thought we were going to get to Wakefield if he ran him back out there. If we waited four more hours and he had to go back out — I think we could take him.”

Gardenhire on Baker: “Right now, he doesn’t have that extra zip on the ball — the deception. And it’s probably a mechanical thing causing him not to get the ball where he wants to. It’s not an injury thing. It’s a mechanical thing.”

Baker on Baker: “Right now, I’m not doing too well. I need to pitch better. That’s really all there is too it. Physically I feel great. The stuff’s there, I just need to be a little more consistent.”

Game 1 lineups: Twins/Red Sox

Wednesday, April 22nd, 2009

BOSTON — It’s gorgeous right now at Fenway Park. Partly cloudy, with sun splashing down on the field.

The Twins took batting practice, preparing for a day-night doubleheader. But more rain is in the forecast, especially for tonight.

Both teams kept their lineups intact. Jason Kubel has some stiffness in his neck, but he had a heating pad on there today, and he’s in the lineup.

Alexi Casilla, batting .196, had a heating pad wrapped around his bat. That got some good laughs in the clubhouse.

Gardy said the four players on the bench for Game 1 — Brendan Harris, Delmon Young, Brian Buscher and Jose Morales — will be in the lineup for Game 2.

Update: On the lower-right side of our Twins page, we now have links to the Twins’ minor-league sites, from Class AAA Rochester to Rookie-level E-Town.

Update (2:15 p.m.): The rain delay started at 1:46, and the tarp is on the field. The Twins trail 10-1. If they give us an update about a restart time, of if they call it (and declare Boston the winner), I’ll post it here.

Update (2:35 p.m.): Joe Mauer went 3-for-4 with a double, a sacrifice fly and one RBI in an extended spring training game today in Fort Myers, Fla. Mauer caught six innings and even caught a runner trying to steal.

Twins/Red Sox rained out

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

Tonight’s Twins game against the Red Sox has been postponed because of rain and will be made up as part of a day-night doubleheader on Wednesday.

Game 1 will start at 11:35 p.m. (Central), and Game 2 will start at 6:10 p.m.

The Twins’ pitching likely will stay the same, with Scott Baker pitching Game 1 and Francisco Liriano pitching Game 2.

I will have an extended updates on Jose Mijares and Jesse Crain for first editions.

Update: The Twins will indeed keep their pitching the same, with Baker in Game 1, and Liriano in Game 2.

Manager Ron Gardenhire indicated that with the weather forecast dicey for Wednesday night, they picked a day-night doubleheader to give them the best chance of getting at least one game in, leaving Thursday for any additional makeups.

Tuesday lineups: Twins vs. Red Sox

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

BOSTON — Jose Mijares is here. In fact, he was on the field, running in the rain a couple hours ago.

Mijares said he has dropped five pounds. He said he’s been working hard, and he’s ready to step into a late-inning role. Manager Ron Gardenhire said he won’t hesitate to use him in that role, either, especially now with Jesse Crain on the DL.

The teams are not taking batting practice on the field. It’s raining hard right now, but most people here are pretty optimistic they’ll play tonight.

Joe Mauer went 2-for-4 with a walk today in an extended spring training game in Fort Myers, Fla. He was the DH today and will catch again tomorrow.

Update (5:35 p.m., CST): It has been raining on and off for a while now, and now it has stopped again. The tarp is still on the field, though. They have given us no official word, but I would be surprised if this game started on time. Stay tuned…

Update (5:50 p.m.): The Red Sox said the game is officially delayed with more information to come. It’s raining pretty hard again. It’s worth noting that both the Twins and Red Sox are off Thursday, so this would be easily rescheduled even though this is the Twins’ only trip to Boston this season.

Update (6 p.m.): It’s pouring here, folks. I’ve gone from optimistic to pessimistic about getting this game in. The radar doesn’t look pretty.

Humber clears waivers, heads to Class AAA Rochester

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

BOSTON — Philip Humber has cleared waivers, and the Twins just assigned him outright to Class AAA Rochester, a team spokesman said.

Humber, 26, likely will go back into Rochester’s starting rotation. He was out of minor-league options and made the Twins’ Opening Day roster but posted a 12.46 ERA in four appearances.
