Twins get good news on Slowey
Posted on July 6th, 2009 – 6:15 PMBy Joe Christensen
Kevin Slowey’s right wrist injury is no more serious than the Twins originally diagnosed, General Manager Bill Smith said today, relaying the update after Slowey visited a Baltimore specialist.
The doctor agreed that Slowey has a strained right wrist and treated him with a cortisone injection. Smith said Slowey will rest for a couple days before resuming his throwing.
Slowey, who is 10-3 with a 4.86 ERA, is eligible to return from the 15-day disabled list on July 19.

Hopefully he will recover quickly and get back to form. He was well on his way to being a 20 game winner. I am sure that if he would have pitched a little better his last couple of starts he would be joining the other 3 at the All Star Game!
Good News JoeC!!!!! Thanks for the update… GO TWINS!
Good news indeed. So Slowey should be available after the AS break, right? It’ll be nice to get a few more starts to evaluate/shop Swarzak with as well.
Well Swarzak has a start against the Yanks later this week, that’d be a perfect audition (or demolition) depending on how it goes.
I still find it hard to believe that Morneau only had one other AL Player of the Week Award in his career?? I know Mauer won the AL Player of the Month award in May but I did not hear if he won multiple times for the AL player of the week in May..
Good timing with the all-star break. Hope Swarzak has a great oiuting.
so, there are no doctors or MRI machines in Minnesota?
No good Dr. in Minn. Don’t forget Dr.Don is the worst……
You’d think the Mayo Clinic would have an MRI.
DrDon had an MIRror.
Quite the MIRror too. Anyone care to hazard a guess as to who gave Red his second opinion bout that shoulder?
Jack Morris said on the postgame show that is not worried about the bullpen. He said that if the starters could go seven innings all the time, the pen would be fine.He also thought Casilla was the key to the second half.Someone to bat second with speed makes the whole lineup better.Gardy, forget his brain craps in the field.Of course, what does Morris know compared to some of the little league rejects on this board.
KC-DET: 3-3 after 8.
Mike Jacobs with the homer of Rodney in the top of 9. Zumaya’s been garbage too (I IP, 2 ERs). 16 innings hurts some more than others I suppose.
Forget trading swarzak. Sheesh. Starters get hurt all the time and you need quality on hand. We don’t have a deep bench of starters anymore until the next wave is ready in a year or two, if ever.
Team is pretty darn good right now. Could use a second baseman, but all teams have a few holes. I like our chances.
kc wins- good day for minny
det had 3 ks in 9th….
And that’s it. Twins 1.5 GB.
would like to see them go all out for sanchez- he would make that lineup devastating….great #2 hitter….
I agree with Morris. I thought Casilla was the key to us only being 41-40 the first half. If he can turn it around look for 49-32 the 2nd half. Good start with 2-0 already.
Mj, I think Casilla might be a player but Sanchez would be much better. What is all out though? Perkins and Span?

Just remember, JC, I meet a lot of you.
Just thought I’d add a few things here, to go along with what OB said at 9:04. 1st of all, road records for most teams in the Majors are losing records. 2nd of all, standings in the Central are current. 3rd, I can’t wait for JC to become a patient of mine so I can perform a needless surgery to cross his optic nerve with his rectum. That will give him a real $h1tty outlook about me. ![]()
My impulsive prediction for the second half:
Nick Punto will prove to be the key to the second half. Filling in the 9 hole he will bat 290 with a 370 OBP, stealing 17 bases in 19 attempts in the second half, all while providing Gold Glove caliber defense at 2b. In fact he will win his first Gold Glove (at 2b). He’ll even hit 5 second half HRs to establish a new career high (of 5).
The Twins take the division with 89 wins (at least 2 or 3 thanks to LNP) and go on to win the World Series.
You tell him, Doc. Good time for a Proctologist joke:
A proctologist walks into the bank. He goes to sign his check and pulls out an anal thermometer. He looks around suspiciously and cries,”Hey ! Some a$$hole has got my pen”!!!!!!!!!
Not bad, Shaun….One time my Adm. Ass’t came to work with a tampax behind her ear. When I asked about that, she looked at me and asked….”Oh hell, now I know where I left my pencil!!!”
OK, shaun….now for the topper of all…. Do you know the difference between an oral thermometer and an anal thermometer?????
Sawdust, the .290 is realistic for the 2nd half. He has done it before and he has flattened his swing a little bit. I would prefer no homers and no trying for homers. If he hits 5 homers his ave would drop to about .140.
Des you fail to see the humor in my prediction of LNP setting a new career high of 5 HR. Anyway, all 5 home runs will be complete accidents so his second half average will not be effected.
I know you were going for humor but I really believe the .290 part is possible if he stops swinging for the fences. I have always hated to see the couple of homers he has hit cuz it seems to make him think he can do it again. I am ok with his talent but for a guy with a rep as a team player he really does a lot of dumb and detrimental stuff. Seems like losing the SS job has made him realize that his role is to hit line drives not popups.
I know there are a lot of Punto-haters in Twins territory, but IMO as long as he provides the caliber of defense that he normally does, all I ask for offensively is league average OBP. If he can do that, he’s not hurting the team offensively (by making outs), he just might not be contributing as much offensively, which is offset by his defensive contribution. Just my philosophy - not everyone can have Mauer of Morneau on the back of their jerseys. Right now his OBP is .323 and league average is .335. So, from my line of thinking, he only needs a minor improvement to qualify for an everyday position.
Des: Trading Span as part of a deal for Sanchez would be essentially breaking even as far as I see it…as the Twins are trading their leadoff hitter.
Also: Twins pick up a half game in the Tigers by virtue of not playing today.
i like slowey he is bright and will continue to be a solid #3or 4 starter but in reality he has not pitched that well this year just okay with a lot of run support. i am not a satisfied fan until i see that era on any of the starters drop and remain below 4.0. wins are a nice stat but credibility in terms of consistency and helping your team win is the era. i see we have one pitcher who is demonstrating what we are hoping to see from our starting five and that is blackburn with nine straight appearances of three runs or less and at least 6 innings per appearance that is what pleases this fan and i believe all five starters have the ability to be where blackburn has gone. no doubt in the second half the twins will need solid and consistent good starting pitching to be in the pennant race, to date we are just beginning to see some of that from more than just blackburn and it is encouraging. it will take more than just one or two horses but the whole stable running at their best. i have hope we will see that and what a strong team the twins can be. how about the fantasy of closing the dome this year with a world series and opening the new park next year with another, starting pitching and getting delmon young to swing and hit with some authority are the keys in my mind.
Any Sano update? Is the $3 million if 16 offer still in play?
Nice post, Jim S. But got to take care of the business this week first. Like T said, we picked up a half game by not playing. Three extremely hard games with the Tigers only gained us one game. Can’t lose that ground by giving some gifts to the Yanks and Sox before the AS break.
It looks like Swarzak will only get 1 start this time, assuming that Slowey will be ready to go on the 19th.
