CLEVELAND — The Twins went 0-for-13 with runners in scoring position today and lost to Cleveland 2-1 at Progressive Field.
Cleveland starter Fausto Carmona held the Twins to one run on six hits and three walks over six innings, Tony Sipp (2-0) got the victory in relief, and Kerry Wood notched his 15th save.
Nick Blackburn (8-6) lost his fourth consecutive start, allowing two runs on seven hits over 6 1/3 innings.
The Twins put runners at second and third with no outs in the second inning, but Mike Redmond hit a soft liner to second, Alexi Casilla struck out and Denard Span bounced back to the pitcher.
The Twins almost squandered another chance in the fourth, after Michael Cuddyer hit a leadoff double. But Cuddyer stole third base and scored on a wild pitch, with Casilla batting.
With the Tigers leading, the Twins could fall 4 1/2 games out today and will have to pick up the pieces before opening another three-game series in Detroit on Friday night.
