Postgame: Sowers, three relievers baffle Twins

The Twins defense was pathetic tonight, but the offense might have been more frustrating.

They hadn’t committed four errors in a game since June 21, 2000 at Texas. And yes, three of these errors led to Cleveland runs, so they were plenty costly.

But it was worse watching Jeremy Sowers retire the first 10 batters he faced and 12 of the first 13. Sowers has been up and down from Class AAA Columbus three times this season, though he is 4-2 with a 3.62 ERA in this latest stint.

Then Jose Veras (6.35 ERA), Tony Sipp (3.30) and Kerry Wood (4.31) each came on for an inning of perfect relief. In all, the Twins managed six hits.

Orlando Cabrera said he didn’t realize the Twins had committed four errors.

“We should score more runs,” he said. “I mean nothing against Sowers, because he pitched pretty good today, but he’s given up a lot of runs, so we should have scored more.”

With news that the Tigers beat Tampa Bay 4-3, with Adam Everett delivering the go-ahead hit, perhaps this will lift your spirits. Look back at the box score from that June 21, 2000 game. See, things could be worse.
