From the Metrodome: Twins/Yankees Game 3

Posted on October 11th, 2009 – 2:01 PM
By Joe Christensen

Clearly, the Twins need to take these one at a time, but to advance to the ALCS, they would need to win three games with these three probable pitching matchups:

Sun: Carl Pavano vs. Andy Pettitte
Mon: Scott Baker vs. CC Sabathia
Wed @ NY: Nick Blackburn vs. A.J. Burnett

On his weekly radio show, on KSTP AM-1500, Manager Ron Gardenhire said he would likely use Jose Morales as his DH today, with Jason Kubel in right field and Brendan Harris at third base. In other words, Carlos Gomez will be back on the bench.

Gardenhire’s pregame press conference starts momentarily, so I’ll post the lineups and updates shortly.

Update: If the Twins win Game 3, the game time for Game 4 on Monday will be 6:37 p.m. If necessary, Game 5 would be Wednesday at 7:07 p.m.

(*) Gardenhire said Morales has looked more relaxed in batting practice and looked fine in a simulated game Monday against Twins pitcher Jeff Manship. Morales had a late-season slump, but there’s hope he’ll be better today, swinging righthanded.

“I’m looking for [Morales] to have a good ballgame,” Gardenhire said. “He’s had time to reflect a little bit, hopefully relax a little bit. It’s not going to be easy for any of us who are all going to be in the same boat.”

(*) Asked about the potential of having Baker pitch Game 4 and Blackburn pitch Game 5, Gardenhire said, “Our pitching’s set up the best it can possibly be set.”

(*) Gardenhire also said: “This team’s been fun, and I don’t expect anything to change. I expect to come out there and fight tonight. You never know what’s going to happen, but you know what? They’re ready to play.”

(*) Gardenhire on whether he considered putting Mauer at DH because of his sore hip: “No, no consideration whatsoever. I can’t tell you how it’s feeling and how much it hurts. You would have to ask him, and he is going to tell you the same thing he told me on the plane, ‘I have been playing with it a few days here and I will continue to play with it.’

“Will it hinder him?” Gardenhire continued. “Only time will tell. I don’t think he ran the bases as good as he can, but he ran the bases, and he does have to run the bases because he keeps getting hits, but he will be out there, he is a gamer, and everybody is playing with a little bit of something this time of year.”

Update: Joe Crede, who had back surgery last month, returned to the team for tonight’s pregame introductions.

Been awhile since I’ve posted, but its been a crazy ride here for the Twinkies hasn’t it?

DY has looked horrific at the plate in the first 2 games, and not much better in LF either. Gomez at least provides speed and defense. why can’t he start instead (move span to Left)?

jbiowa says:

Jonathon Papelbon….go take a seat next to Joe Nathan.

Who would have believed this?

Will get to the Twins later!

Not sure about the choice of Morales at DH. He hasn’t been any better than Gomez at the plate lately, and I’d rather have Go-Go’s speed in the outfield.

Okay, Twins, the Rockies and Phillies will have to play at least 1 more after tonight. If they even get to play tonight. Twins might as well keep playing, too. Don’t want 3 different series to go 3-0.

C’mon boys, let’s have fun!

T says:

Jonathon Papelbon….go take a seat next to Joe Nathan.

No kidding. Wonder if this will make people shut up about Nathan finally.

DrDon says:

October 11th, 2009 at 3:46 pm

Even the elite closers of today, i.e., Papelbon and Nathan, can both have their bad days.

As Joe N. said….I’ve already forgotten about game 2, time to get it on tonight.

T says:

October 11th, 2009 at 3:50 pm

Haha…Papelbon’s was even more embarassing. 2 outs, bases loaded.

Nathan’s was bloop blam and then he got through 2-more.

twinsfreek says:

October 11th, 2009 at 4:06 pm

It’s time for DY,JK,MC,JM,and OC, to all step up and turn into postseason monsters!

slumpyb says:

October 11th, 2009 at 4:19 pm

Why can’t Gomez start? Maybe because he helped cost us the game on Friday on the basepaths with pure stupidity. Sure both he and DY swung at the first pitch with the bases loaded, but at least DY hit the ball hard. Did you see his throw to 3rd after Nathan threw the ball into CF? From shallow CF he couldn’t make and accurate throw to 3rd base. He’s just awful.

Think1Way2 says:

October 11th, 2009 at 4:23 pm

I really hope Gomez is in AAA next year

October 11th, 2009 at 4:28 pm

Hey - Papelbon blew it today and so Nathan should feel better. There is NO reliever today that is not hittable. Angels are the team to beat and are playing Twins type of ball (formerly Dodgers type of ball).

DrDon says:

True story for today… During the Vikings game today, my 12 year old grandson asked his almost 40 year old dad why Favre was wearing pink shoes. My undeniably Son-in-Law explained it this way: “It’s breast awareness month.” Talk about a belly laugh…… :)

Still can’t get past the Germans bombing of Pearl Harbor. I am stationed there now, and I pretty darn sure it was the Japanese. I might have to go back to the history books to verify though. Maybe I was missing something?

Too bad our Twinkies didn’t get that second game in NY, I would be feeling MUCH more comfortable about taking this series!

Tim says:

October 11th, 2009 at 4:49 pm

Nathan needs to go back to a prior season, he looks way too timid as of late. Get back the killer instinct instead of looking so unsure of yourself on the mound. You can see it in his body language.

why would you have buscher bat against a lh pitcher?

E7 says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:35 pm

Good thing Gomez is on the bench. He isn’t anything better than a pinch runner, 4th outfielder. Should be in AAA next year. The 5 tool thing is a joke. He doesn’t have the hand-eye coordination to hit in the majors.

How Did Vavra Get a Job says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:36 pm

T: So because Papelbon blows his today, this excuses Nathan’s? Bullsh*t. Plain and simple. Im still pissed about Nathans meltdown and that was nearly 3 nights ago. Nut up or shut up, and clearly Nathan has no nuts vs the Yanks. Remember to bring him his ba ba, and blankey tonight.

MedSchoolMat: Gomez and DY are two of the most frustrating players on this roster to watch. I mean they have so much potential and tease you with snippets of good games, at bats, etc. but in the end, it seems they disappoint more than not. Kind of a pick your poison kinda lineup choice today.

How Did Vavra Get a Job says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:41 pm

My above post is kinda negative, fully admit that, but I have a bad feeling tonight and am tired of watching us “bust our tails” off to make the playoffs, only to get thoroughly schooled in the first round.

I lived in NYC from 04-08, and do you know all the crap Ive taken from my NY friends about this series? Its maddening and I cant say jack back until we do something, ANYTHING, in the way of winning a postseason game.

E7 says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:43 pm

As far as Nathan…I still think he has the Killer instinct and make up to be a closer. The problem is his age and his arm. If you look at the baseball stats like (http://www.fangraphs.com/statss.aspx?playerid=1122&position=P)… his velocity came down last year, and as an aging veteran with 70 innings this year, I’m sure it has come down even more at the end of this season. He’s aging and I’m sure he’s tired.

There’s a big difference between a 96 mph fastball and a 92 mph. Just ask Texeira…

popriveter says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:45 pm

I don’t know why I’m writing this, but I feel like Delmon is due for a big night. Sure do hope they own the dome tonight!

How Did Vavra Get a Job says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:46 pm

Good point E7, but Im still not impressed as that does nothing to explain why Rivera is still so dominant and OLDER than Nathan.

T says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Remember to bring him his ba ba, and blankey tonight.

Only if I’m first able to pry them away from you.

Rivera is still so dominant and OLDER than Nathan.

That’s because he’s Mariano Rivera. If you don’t consider anybody a “good” closer unless they play like Mariano Rivera…that’s a riddiculous standard to set.

While we’re at it, let’s just throw out Derek Lee, Mark Texeria, and Justin Morneau because none of them are as “good” as Albert Pujols.

GCOkemos says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:56 pm

Rivera’s cutter is one of the best in the history of the game. Its harsh to judge Nathan compared to the best closer ever.

GCOkemos says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:57 pm

T: took the words right out of my keyboard.

Fussface says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:57 pm

I do believe a shellacking is in store tonight.

popriveter says:

October 11th, 2009 at 5:59 pm

Dear HDVGaJ,
Rivera’s out pitch is a cutter. The movement on a cut fastball makes its success less dependent on velocity than a straight fastball. And, oh yeah, individuals age differently.

The TBS commercials are at least a change from the Casino commericials. It’s a good thing FSN BB is over … I’m so tired of that “Marry Me?” in the pancakes commercial. Sorry, it wasn’t that unusual … certainly not enough to warrant a commercial.

Right, Fuss. He’s got a funny chin. The Yankees have some players that are not handsome.

T says:

October 11th, 2009 at 7:04 pm

That is probably the most dramatic change in zones between hitters I have seen in a while.

I can see why Tex was frustrated. He got a pitch for a ball and one that was a bit more outside was the one he got rung up on.

Of coure then A-Rod comes in and gets two nearly identical pitches to the one that K’d Tex and both are balls.

I don’t mind bad zones, just as long as they are consistently bad.

Me Too says:

October 11th, 2009 at 8:09 pm

I am actually thinking that TBS would like to see an extended series out of one of these. So far, they are getting little bang for their bucks. Boston played in LA, so they didn’t get much East Coast viewership on that series. St. Louis didn’t put up a good fight, and that series was over quick too. Now, the Twins aren’t making it look too good for them with the other East Coast team. All they really have left is to hope for the Phillies and Rockies to pull their ad revenue out of the fire.
I am really hoping that the Twins can help TBS get more ad revenue. Chip Carey needs to get paid you know.

The Twins need to hang in there as we go to the bottom of the 7th. Very sad that Pavano could not do the simple thing of keeping the ball in the park on back-to-back batters — hurting much more because of one who in the past depended on Steroids. But, Pavano is human, as are all of us. At the same time, the bone-headed play of Gomez two nights ago, the Nathan choke, and poor baserunning of Mauer is taking its toll.

Hopefully the Twins — just like we must do as fans — is put it behind us — and go get ‘em in the 7th, 8th and 9th. Let’s do just that.

It’s nice having all that power on the bench like Redmond, Casilla, Tolbert/Buscher, Gomez etc. Before anyone sings Bill Smith’s praises, consider that the number one priority last winter was to get a right handed power hitter. Don’t gove me the .235 oft-injured Crede who we got for a couple of bats and bags of balls because no one else wanted him, I am talking about a right handed power hitter. Valencia? Seriously? The answer to our RH power hitter in a playoff push would be a rookie who’s first ABs would come in September?

If Span bunts, Cabrera pop to center does not score Punto. Instead posts would be wondering why Punto tried to score from 3rd on short fly. Odds of scoring from 2nd with nobody out are way better than odds of scoring from 3rd with one out. Twins only have a few hitters, absolutely no reason to have one of them give up an out to advance a runner to third.

Not watching Game 2? Not Gardy’s fault? One of Gardy’s biggest fault as a manager is when he gets the lead in a game he goes to sleep. We should have been running on the Yankee pitcher, catcher and outfield arms. Bunting (especially in Game 1 against tub of lard CC), hitting and running. Playing aggressive small ball because we have no power against the Yanks. Instead Gardy sat on his thumb and Nathan did the rest. Gardy is teflon, he never gets the blame he deserves

Sure it may end up being a sweep, but it still took a bit more effort than showing up for the Yankees to win this.

Joe Stebo says:

October 11th, 2009 at 9:01 pm

So why are the Yankees about to sweep our Twins? Well, assume for a minute that the two teams merged. How many Twins would make the starting lineup? Mauer, certainly. Morneau might be the DH. Span probably would play in the outfield. Do you see anyone else? No pitchers would ever start — maybe wouldn’t even pitch. We just have to admit that the Yankees are a heckuva team. The Twins have given us fun for the last month. Let’s respect their effort and hope we can fill the couple of weak spots in the lineup and have a better year next year.

Bob says:

October 11th, 2009 at 9:01 pm

We won’t have to worry about October baseball next year outdoors if Gardenhire and Punto and the gang are back. The Sox will make some major acquisitions and their pitching staff looks tough as nails with Peavey and Garcia joining Danks and Floyd, etc. The Tigers should be better with Porcello getting experience and they will get some good players over the winter. Maybe Parvano? KC should be better as should the Indians. I see the Twins 3rd next year with Gardy and Smith continuing to believe in Liriano, Perkins, Crain, etc. and Gomez taking a spot on the roster and maybe even Redmond. Makes you sick.

A)”I have such a good jump that if one of the game’s all-time greatest players ever makes a stupid throw to first trying to get a runner he has no chance on, I can score all the way from second on an infield hit.”

B)”If that chopper squeaks through the infield, I’m really gonna have to scoot to make it home on that one.”

There is just no rational explanation for that blunder. I am completely stupified at this point.

This is an organization that would not make an offer to Torii Hunter (3 run HR in Game 1 against the Red Sox), but would offer a multiyear contract to Nick Punto. Tonight we all saw the result. Gardenhire and his boys (pitching Nathan in the 9th inning of Game 2 against a lineup that was batting over .500 against him), batting Kubel against a nasty lefthander (Kubel 0 for 3 with 3 Ks–somebody tell me Gomez would have done worse than that), and his favorite, Nick Punto, running us out of an inning that could have decided the game and maybe the series. George “Sparky” Anderson was once quoted: “Managers don’t win games. Managers lose games.”

Sorry Nick, you ain’t never gonna recover from that one. You just salvaged your reputation in Minnesota 1 second and threw it all away forever the next.

Ullger had the stop sign up before Punto rounded the bases near as I can tell from the replays they showed. Nick was running with his head down and even looked back toward center field to try and pick up a ball he wrongly assumed would get through. He was the most important baserunner of 2009 and he failed miserably.

You can see Ullger’s reaction after Punto doesn’t stop, he throws his hands down in disbelief, as did the entire state of Minnesota.

mdillin says:

October 11th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Here’s what I think.

I pulled for the Twins all year, and this is what the fans get.

In Games 2 and 3:

Nathan looks like a college pitcher.

Gomez doesn’t know the rules of the game, as in being tagged out for no reason before the base runner could touch home plate.

Mauer, yes, is cheated by Cuzzi out of a double. But then he singles, refuses to go to 3B on a hit to right, plays station to station baseball, then only goes to third on a single, then takes a stroll home on the final force out of the inning — giving the Twins zero runs with the bases loaded and behind by one.

Nathan? Is this where I can use the word “impotent” in his choke in Game 2? Just want to know — without challenging his manhood.

Nothing better than Punto, though. He violates the cardinal rule of baseball — never make the first or last out at third base — oh, and he only represented the tying run in the bottom of the 8th.

Gardenhire — I like him — but he refuses to even argue the fair ball double in Game 2 — he sits his butt on the bench and does nothing.

The Twins not only deserve to lose == they should give an apology to the Detroit Tigers. The Tigers and Leyland actually may have actually tried to beat the Yankees.

Oh, and as part of the collapse, the Twins give up 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th and now it is 4-1.

The Twins used to stand for something, and I was so excited about the move to the outdoor ball park. These Twins need to be buried in the ruins of the Metrodome — bring back the Washington Senators — and let the Nationals return to be the Montreal Expos.

As in Apocalypse Now: “Nuke them, nuke ‘em all.”

Bride of Chucky says:

October 11th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

Ahhhh, the national humiliation. Don’t you just love it

Corey says:

October 11th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

I won’t mind if Joe Mauer signs with the Yankees and wins several World Series with them. The Twins have blown all their chances to do anything this decade, so it would be fitting.

shaun says:

October 11th, 2009 at 9:38 pm

jbiowa says:

Always remember that the 2 World Champions featured a nucleus of players scouted, drafted, and signed by the Griffith family. The relevant organization (i.e. scouts, etc.) have ties to the Griffiths, not the Pohlads. Since they purchased the team, the Pohlads paid the bills and signed the checks, and maintained a miserly budget. Imagine this team with Hunter and Santana. The Twins have won 2 post season games against the Yankees (2003 and 2004), both were started by Johan Santana, and were played in Yankee Stadium. Here’s hoping that Torii wins a ring this year. Hasta la vista, Lil’ Nicky.

Then they’ll make Mauer what sounds like a credible offer only to have the Yankees make an offer that tacks on two years and doubles the dollar amount. It’s called the Torii Hunter strategy.

Well they’ve only won 1 this decade and that was in 2000 and they are aging all the time. I’m not convinced they’ll beat the Angels this year.

Maybe Gardy shouldn’t always be so fixated on “having fun” and “go out and enjoy it” and try to take care of business. That ‘have fun’ attitude might work in 5th grade soccer, but it’s obviously not working in major league baseball. 2-16 in the last 18 playoff games is hideous!

Tough series for Kubel and Morneau and Crede could have made a big difference. Base running, situational hitting and 9th inning pitching was just horrid. I guess I’ll try and forget this series and just think about how great the Detroit game was and I was there to see it. I didn’t want to drive 670 miles today round trip and watch the Yankees celebrate. At least I saw the Twins final win at the Dome and the North Stars last win at the Met Center.

Some observations:
1. 2-16 IS deplorable in the last 18 playoff games.
2. Many faces we see on this year’s Twins will be gone next year.
3. We will miss the Dome much more than we imagine. It was built for a reason.
4. We have too many major sports attractions in this market. Someone has to move out to allow the remaining ones to thrive. Gopher football, Gopher basketball, Gopher hockey, Wild, Timberwolves, Twins, Vikings. Name a smaller market with all of those major programs competing for attention. Name any market.

Mighty Casey says:

I choose to believe that Bill Smith is coming into his own. As Walter said, he pulled out some good acquisitions in late summer.

The question is how much is ownership going to let him spend. Does anybody know what the revenues would be based on the % they’ve always applied?

On Gardenhire, I ranted much earlier. I will NEVER understand why he kept putting Morneau in the #4 spot from August 15-September 14 (except for the games Justin was out). But I’ve now accepted that they won’t take the move to Target Field away from him — they’ve made him the face of their advertising for Target.

Mauer has to be our trump card here. As many have pointed out, Cheap Carl running the team from the grave has no incentive to go out and spend money when people will come to Target Field anyway next year. Mauer needs to put the fear of God into the front office, and let them know that he is GONE if they dont do something to make this team competitive beyond just winning a weak division. Maybe we should feel content to win divisions many years. but Mauer and Morneau are in their prime NOW, and now is the only period i nour generation when we may have the chance to have a top team by adding just a couple of other pieces.

Sure we we were injured and alike, but Gardy made a lot of mistakes during the season and his players do some dumb things. Being the good guy and hustling is not always going to cut it excuse wise. Gardy is the constant on this team since 2002, players have come and gone.

Somewhere that has to fall on Gardy-whether he goes or shakes up his coaching staff.

filthy46 says:

In addition when healthy we have the M & M boys and if we add an infield piece and trade Nathan and Perkins we can get some depth. Maybe that Gibson kid could be a plus and that young kid who will eventually play short. We do not need to spend too much money but we need to get over this hump, there is no reason to constantly fail in the playoffs. Gardy needs to change the mentality of this team as well, we seem to accept losing to the BIG BOYS, these guys have to get pissed off, starting now…

Steve H says:

Sure increase the payroll some, I agree, but we have good young pitching and more depth coming back from injuries. We need to see Guerra in spring training, he throws bullets and WE NEED A POWER ARM THAT SCARES PEOPLE, Nathan is done in my book. The pressure is too much and he is a nibbler far too much, his greatness as an intimadator is done, his trade value would be fairly high and thrown in Perkins. As I said throw in one other solid piece and you are set. THE PLAYERS WE HAVE MUST STEP AND DEVELOP THEIR GAMES IN POST SEASON PLAY AND MANAGER AS WELL 2-16 AGAINST VARIOUS TEAMS IS DISGUSTING…

h2oface says:

October 11th, 2009 at 10:58 pm

Nathan sure wasn’t pitching well in the latter part of the season, I think he lost confidence in the fast ball. It didn’t have the zip and movement that it usually had. Seemed to not challenge the hitters as much and was nibbling.

I will end it here, the Twins need to make some adjustments to their philosophy and what they expect around here. Their goal should be to win a WS and the front office must decide realistically who can help us not only reach the post season but put a team and a coaching staff on the field that has the mentality and moxie to get after it and turn around our post season play. Yes we can spend some money but as I said the attitude they take to Target field must be different, after this series, they should be somewhat embarassed and pissed off at themselves and the Yankees. I want to see them play with a chip on their shoulder and talk about it as well. Soft is for ice cream boys, it is time to toughen up and expect more from yourselves, sometimes more than a good effort is required, see you next year….

This series was an embarassment, and when the Angels take out the Yankees quite easily it will be even more of one.

I think the Twins will be favorites in the division next year, with healthy Morny, Slowey, Neshy & Boofy, but we all know the team will not spend any real money. O-Cab had some good moments, but he’ll be offered more by somebody. Pavano did well enough to get a contract the Twins won’t match. No chance do we lock up Mauer this offseason. We may sign him eventually, but its gonna go down to the bitter end.
They gotta get rid of Nathan though while they can still get a decent trade package. He’s proven he cannot be relied on to ever get that big game pressure save, so what good is he?

The organization has to do something. We have shown(or Gardy has) that we are incapable of beatng the Yankees, Red Sox and Angels. Well, those 3 teams all spend the money and are not gonna be going anywhere. Year after year we can contend in the central, but if we can NEVER beat these teams, then what is the point? I know game 163 was exciting, but with the way this ended I’d have rather they lost that 4th game at Detroit and ended the dome era by sweeping KC. Instead the dome is closed out with the Yankees celebrating as we go down with a whimper. That’s almost as bad as the Tim Brewster masterpiece against Iowa!

Gardy will never be fired, but he simply has to change his approach to ever be a big time manager. His teams play scared against the marquee teams. The TK Twins relished the pressure, the Gardy Twins fold under it every single time.

Punto is a Great Player?! Did someone really post that in this blog. WOW, someone really had too much Twins Kool Aid! I suppose the person that posted that would rather have Punto then say someone like Robinson Cano?? The team has lost 9 consecutive playoff games and people are saying this was a great season. This team won the worst division in the MLB. This team lacks starting pitching, a middle infield a Left Fielder and a 3B. If Billy Smith can improve those areas this off-season they may be able to break their playoff slump.

The Twins got beat by a much better team - period. That being said, we could have done better. Never a fan of Gardy - don’t think he manages a game very well and his players do not appear to be baseball savvy. In his defense, he does not have a great roster to work with. He has a pretty good roster - not great. Needs a bona fide #1 pitcher. Need to sign Joe, O Cab. and Pavano. If those 4 things happen, good things will follow.
