Twins to unveil new road uniforms, 1961 throwbacks
Posted on November 16th, 2009 – 9:54 AMBy Joe Christensen
Today at noon, the Twins will unveil a major redesign of their road uniforms, and introduce a new alternate home uniform — 1961 throwbacks, commemorating their 50th season in Minnesota.
Scott Baker and Denard Span will be on hand at the IDS Crystal Court, as the team also unveils a subtle tweak to the main home uniform, a slight change with the script, I’ve been told. The team is being very secretive with details, but we will have more on this after the announcement.
Also, there is word that RHP Juan Morillo and 1B Justin Huber have indeed signed to play in Japan. The Twins would gain compensation for losing Morillo after placing him on the 40-man roster, but not for Huber, who was trimmed last week. Those transactions will be announced later today.
Update: Back from the unveiling. The 1961 throwbacks are outstanding — off-white, a real classic look. The road unis are a nice improvement — pinstripes are gone, TC hat, Minnesota written across front in script. Here’s a link to some images, but you need to see them on the players themselves. Hopefully we’ll have our photos up soon.

Are you going to have pictures, Joe?
Thanks.
Personally, I really hate seeing Morillo go. He’s one guy in the organization with the velocity to come in to sit hitters down in a tight spot. You can teach location and mechanics, but it’s tough to teach 98mph.
Interesting the Twins would tweak with the script on their home uniforms now that they have that giant Twins logo installed at Target Field.
any word on what financial compensation the Twins received in the Morillo transaction?
The giant Twins’ logo installed at Target Field reflects the script tweak. It’s not such a big secret.
Gosh I hope they go back to the old Jim Kaat white with blue pinstripes with the original script…
mlb photostore has a picture of Francisco Liriano available in the “former players” catagory. Those guys are mind readers…
Looking forward to the new road. Will be a purchase sometime after the holidays.
Interesting to see the usage of the M hat as an “alternate” hat now.
“mlb photostore has a picture of Francisco Liriano available in the “former players” catagory.”
Every player is a future “former player”.
i’d get more excited with a decent 3b or starting pitcher, not sure new uniforms will win us any more games.
Wouldn’t the Twins get something for Huber since they offered him a contract?
The script on the front of the jerseys doesn’t HAVE to be the same as the logo.
I really hope they aren’t ugly. That would really be a let down.
I hope the new uniforms make Punto look taller and Boof look slimmer.
Yawn. I don’t get the whole uniform thing at all. I mean, I don’t why people care all that much. It’s cool if you do, everyone has their things they are interested in that others aren’t, but I don’t get it.
While I don’t personally care all that much, teams introduce new uniforms in order to sell more replica merchandise. If the uniforms are popular, they will have more revenue which I hope can help at least a little in extending Mauer and signing free agents…something I do care about.
Pics of the new road jersey is up at mntwins.com.
Kinda sharp.
Jim: They obviously were unable to teach Morillo control/mechanics because he never surfaced the rest of the season. I don’t think he will be missed, he would not have been an option in the pen anyways with Bonser and Neshek coming back.
Boring. Dull. Missed a golden opportunity.
Dull and boring - like the 2009 Twins. Maybe they’ll unveil a more exciting uniform for the final three weeks of the 2010 season.
Actually, the throw-backs are nice.
Actually, the throw-backs are nice.
Can we get some throwback players to fill those throwback uniforms?
Screw the uni’s. They should get some cheerleaders. This will get our interest. Then we ask what are the cheerleaders gonna be wearin?
Mount a stripper pole on the top of each dugout.
Walter,
We need to get you on their BOD.
In all seriousness. I’ve been to some pretty bad T-wolves games. Where the cheerleaders were the hilight of the evening.
Paul
you go to watch the basketball…? ![]()
WJ… Foul poles become Stripper poles. ![]()
“WJ… Foul poles become Stripper poles.”
If you think they had base running problems before just wait untill they catch a glimpse of ole Candy out there.
matt,
I take it you’ve seen the aforementioned T-wolves ladies.
Sad to say there’s been a few times I thought I might see good b-ball.
WJ… Foul poles become Stripper poles.
That would make for some interesting ground rules, Dr. Don.
Maybe Alexi should stop playing in the DWL. He’s doing more harm than good. He’s at .172/.172/276. He does have a HR though.
If the Twins re-sign Mauer, they’ll only be able to afford the bargain-basement cheerleaders.
Even a bargain-basement cheerleader is way better than Reddog runnin round naked.
I shoulda said “for most people”
Sorry if I offended anyone.
National League Rookie-of-the-Year voting:
7th-place………..Garrett Jones, Pirates.
“I shoulda said “for most people”
Sorry if I offended anyone.”
Those who picked “Naked Red-Dog” over any gender of any species are richly deserving of being offended.
“National League Rookie-of-the-Year voting:
7th-place………..Garrett Jones, Pirates.”
I thought he would finish higher then that didn’t you?
BC of ND,
“I thought he would finish higher then that didn’t you?”
Those voting probaly knew it was nothing more than an anomaly.
^watch Morillo and Huber be rookie of the years in Japan.
ES16 good point. I doubt he will be able to repeat those numbers but you never know maybe he’s another Vinny Castilla.
“Those voting probaly knew it was nothing more than an anomaly”
Mr. Anomaly often gets a lot of ROY votes:
Ben Grieve
Angel Berroa
Jason Jennings
Scott Williamson
Kerry Wood
Kasahiro Sasaki
Marty Cordova
Joe Charbonneau
John Castino
What someone may or may not do int he future should have no bearing on the voting for an award in the present year. I think the fact that there were more deserving candidates (J.A. Happ and Tommy Hanson were 2nd and 3rd) probably had more to do with Jones’s 7th place finish. I could be wrong, though. I don’t vote.
I shoulda hit “refresh” before posting. Good posts, sane. Don’t forget Mark Fydrich and a bunch of Dodgers from the ’80’s whose names I can’t even remember now.
I hope the voters dont think Joe Mauers 28 hr’s were an anomaly, hell i hope they weren’t an anomaly.
Mea culpa. None of the guys I was thinking of actually won ROY. Some notable Dodgers, on the other hand, did (Valnzueal, Sax, Sutcliffe, Piazza). On the other hand, so did Todd Hollandsworth.
Pat Listach, Bobby Crosby…
“Sorry if I offended anyone.”
“Pat Listach”
Listach made me think of this. There’s a guy who posts on the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel Brewers website. At least the writing style indicates a guy. Who goes by the handle of…
RideBernie’sMustache
Hear Buscher is close to signing in Japan as well. vfptlkvopiut
I guess they hired the same guy who designed the National’s road unies. Sheesh. I agree with the guy who said screw the new unies, get us a decent 3b and a starting pitcher!
New uniforms = more jersey revenues.
^put that towards the 3B and Starting pitcher and we’re set ![]()
On the left field foul pole tonight: Candy.
On the right field foul pole tonight:
Fawn.
Thank goodness that one logo says “baseball club” on it. Otherwise I’m not sure people would know who/what the Twins are. Sheesh - that one is bad.
Love love love the Retro’s! Screw it, make them the official home uni after this season.
Lukewarm on our away’s. Will miss the pinstripes, and it looks eerily similar to the color scheme of the Nationals away jersey with only the script being a different color.
F’n hate the regular home unis…that “tweaked” logo needs to go the way of GO-GO…far, far away!
for the record, Milwaukee is about a 6 hour drive (5 if you’re speeding), so he’s not that far away.
Stippers on the foul poles? Well at least Phil Cuzzi would have an excuse for not paying attention to fair/foul balls this time.
I totally approve of the throw-up uniforms.
Throw-back?
Oh.
My bad.
I love the new home uniform. I can’t wait to put in my order for a Delaney, or a Slama jersey (I hate people who get mauer and morneau jerseys… no imagination)…
Those road uniforms at first glance are just horrible.
The twins should wear all wear number 4 and Favre on the back of the jersey. go twins! sign nick punto and let mauer go-empty stadium in 3 years, but sign punto, do it twins go for it!!!!!!!!
Expression-
I have Mauer and Morneau jerseys (and a Nathan) since if I am going to be spending $200+ on a customized authentic, it should be worth the money!
I hope yhe new uni’s win a lot of games
Sane:
You made a great point in the last post about the lack of a leader on this team. Cuddyer and Punto are our best bets, and that’s not saying, not a whole lot, but at least not enough.
Paul:
You’re either an idiot or a REALLY die hard fan to go to T-Wolves games these days…or rich with a Lot of time to kill. Either way, I think I applaud and stand in awe of you…sort of.
Lastly: I like the new uni’s.

Trade Joe Nathan
Stippers on the foul poles? Well at least Phil Cuzzi would have an excuse for not paying attention to fair/foul balls this time.
Hahahaha. Good one, T!
I love the new home uniform. I can’t wait to put in my order for a Delaney, or a Slama jersey (I hate people who get mauer and morneau jerseys… no imagination)…
You’re all a bunch of tools.
Ugly new uniforms and new logo. Go back to what they had last year…more of a classic style. Why mess with a good thing just because you are going to a new field?
Ironically E7 the main uniform change (road) won’t ever been seen at the new field, since the 1961 throwbacks are a 1 year uniform.
Strib needs to remove the Carlos Gomez picture from the top of the Twins page.
Replace it with a Roy Halladay photo please.
“Why mess with a good thing just because you are going to a new field?”
To make money on jersey sales.
I do like the TC logo on the road hats. The Twins should ditch that stupid “M” logo altogether.
are they doing anything with the hats
Shaun,
I actually think that the 61 throwbacks may become the permanent home uni in 2011 as the style of the logo is similar to the new road uni.
I’m indifferent about the new uni’s but Morillo leaving could come back to bite us if the pitching staff has another injury plagued season…probably not though as the Twins currently have how many pitchers who think they should be on the team this coming season? Lets count Baker, Slowey, Blackburn, Liriano, Perkins, Duensing, Bonser, Swarzak, Nathan, Guerrier, Rauch, Mayhay, Crain, Neshek, Mijares, plus they SAY that they are looking to sign 2 vet starters! And Manship, Slama ect are probably hopiong for a chance in the bigs this year.
Sweetone,
I saw something about that just now.
Of course there was talk last year the players might want to wear the 1982 throwbacks more often than on Saturdays, which wasn’t the case other than opening day and I think 4th of July (?).
If that is the case, they wasted a lot of money etching the updated Twins script into the stone on the Twins dugout and placing the updated script all over Target Field.
Keep it as a Saturday alternate only.
I think the Twins should package a couple of those pitchers with Ben Revere and try to land Halliday! I doubt that would be enough but the Twins need a #1 SP!
shazel
That’s almost identical to what the Mets gave up for Johan. The bigger problem with Doc is his no trade claus.
The deal with the Mets went through only because Santana agreed to an extension (a really big one at that). Hmmm, put that on the list of things that sound dirty but aren’t. Forgive the digression, but giving up three or four players makes sense only if Halladay is here for more than one year. The only way to make that happen is money. I just don’t think that will happen.
Shaun,
Even if the go to the 61 jersey full time, they still have the new script as the primary logo that will be worn on the sleeves.
Hmmm, that just made me think to myself the following question: Is there ANY player anywhere, that you - as a Twins fan - would forgo signing Mauer in order to offer your max contract $ to new player x instead?
Pujols is older. Any starter pitchers? Halladay? Greinke is young and holding some hardware today. I’m not sure there is a player I think makes the Twins better than Joe does in the long run.
to all those wanting to trade Revere - ask yourselves how much you like Span, because that’s basically who you are trading away.
Interesting question, heetcpa. Even though he’s older, I might (stress “might”) take Pujols over Mauer because of the fact that Mauer plays such a demanding position and is more likely to break down. Pitchers’ health is such a question mark that I don’t think I’d consider a pitcher ahead of Mauer unless it was someone like Lincecum who is under club control for several more years and, therefore, cheaper. That being said, I agree that there probably isn’t a player out there who makes the Twins better than Mauer. The grass is not always greener . . .
the twins should win 95 games next year with the new uniforms, that is of course, unless any other team has new uniforms which would cancel it out. i would still rather have a good full time 3b and a good starter. imo they would do more to win a few more games then this uniform bs.
for all the people that keep bringing up trading for halladay where is the 15.75 m to pay him coming from on top of all the great prospects we don’t have????? or maybe we trade mauer for him??
Why isnt anyone talking about the sweet new TC hats with the red bill? I think that hat is one of the best in the majors.
“the twins should win 95 games next year with the new uniforms,”
Actually, new uniforms are only good for an additional 2.5 wins per season. However, the Twins are still sticking with the alternative sleeveless jerseys, so it could result in a net loss of .5 games per season.
Agree with your 2:17 post, ggg. However, I’d be more concerned about where the money for an extension would come from as opposed to 2010’s $15.75 million. Either way, trading for Hallady is probably unrealistic, no matter how much I’d like to have Halladay in one the Twins spiffy new unis.
I love ES16’s 2:30 post. Good use of stats.
Sweet-
They would then have to add that patch to the 1961 jerseys since it’s not on there today.
Wouldn’t fit with the old school look and old Twins shaking hands patch.
Anyway keep in mind everyone the last time the Twins made any real changes to their unis (no counting adding alternates) they had a pretty good year.
The new uni’s look like the Cleveland Indians grey road uni’s. Except the blue Minnesota with red boarder is a red Indians with blue boarder.
Another thing, the Tribe wear a solid blue hat on the road and a red billed one at home. Also, just the opposite. I wonder if the designer also designed the Indians uni and just flipped the colors?
Wow, two feature articles about the Twins at the top of the online Strib home page.
Gettin’ ‘er done in the offseason. Somebody give me season tickets for a Christmas present.
Shaun,
The Twins shaking hands patch also incorporates the new Twins block logo, so we are good there as well.
Also, the could put the primary logo in place of the 50th Season patch on the retro jersey as well.
Any word on Erik Bedard? Is he staying with the M’s? He could be a poor man’s Roy Halladay and a solid top of the rotation rock in the Twins rotation. If we can work out a deal to extend Mauer and sign Bedard (and hopefully get a decent hitting 3rd bagger), I’d say go for it! Does this seem any bit realistic, or am I dreaming, based on this orgs unwillingness to spend on FA’s?
Bill Smith is far more likely to surprise us than Terry Ryan was. I think Bedard, Ben Sheets, and possibly Rich Harden (he’s younger but even more injury-prone than the aofrementioned) are very intriguing possibilities. Sheets has been really, really good and gone over 200 IP 3 times and his career K/BB ratio is darn near 4:1. Bedard doesn’t have those kinds of stats, but he’s a year younger and he hasn’t been real hittable when he’s been healthy. None of these guys are likely to fetch huge sums of money (by baseball standards) and they likely won’t get muti-year deals. Further, none are Type A FA’s. I think there’s a decent chance the club gets in the bidding for at least one of them.
On second thought, if the Yankees and Red Sox are in the mix, someone will offer one of these three more than a one-year deal, but I still think it would be incentive-laden and have club options. Either way, I think a contract with one of these guys would be within the reach of the Twins.
Grienke wins the Cy Young? Thank god! And we’ve got Blanco potentially signing to backup Pierzynski?
Nice.
Heetcpa,I’m not sure there is a player I think makes the Twins better than Joe does in the long run.
I was thinking Handley Ramirez would have been a decent exchange for Joe, at least before the Hardy trade. Catcher would have been less of a drop off, at least offensively, with Morales and Ramos than the gain at shortstop.
“On second thought, if the Yankees and Red Sox are in the mix…”
Are the Angels in the mix re Lackey. Thought I read that the Red Sox were. Why not the Yankees?
Maybe the Angels will be in the mix for 1 or more of Bedard, Harden, and Sheets.
Again, Washburn wants to play nearer to his home in Wisconsin.
Per mlbtraderumors.com, the Twins are apparently in the mix for Mark Derosa. This would be a huge upgrade at second/third base and would give us another potential 15-25 homers from a right handed bat and he is also good with the glove.
E7 says:
“Ugly new uniforms and new logo. Go back to what they had last year…more of a classic style.”
Aren’t throwback jersey’s classic enough for ya?
So the Twins are ‘interested’, whatever that really means, in Mark DeRosa. I have to say I’m not totally against it, but I wouldn’t sign him at any cost either. He had a decent year last year for the Indians/Cardinals, before he got hurt anyway. I think he could do no worse than Crede did last year- which was kind of good bad. All this being said, IF in fact Crede would put up similar numbers to Mark, then I’d take Crede ’cause he’d probably be cheaper. But if DeRosa can stay healthy, then maybe. Something to think about and discuss I guess.
Sheets is Great…when he pitches. I don’t know if I’d go after him or not, but I’d seriously think about it. Ultimately, I think BS has a few tricks up his sleeve and a few treats for Twins fans this offseason. We’ll see, but Please BS, prove me right.

Trade Joe Nathan
P.S.
Hardy was a Great start, but you shouldn’t be done. Not by a long shot.
I keep seeing people complaining that the Twins’ new road jerseys look like this team’s and that team’s road jerseys, only with different script. News flash, folks: ALL BASEBALL TEAMS HAVE THE SAME ROAD UNI, BUT WITH DIFFERENT SCTIPT!
SCRIPT! lol.
Also, someone said that what they wore last year looked “more classic”. Um. They wore 1982 throwbacks last year. In 2010 they will be wearing 1961 throwbacks. By my math, that is 21 extra years of delicious classicness.
A word of advice to anyone rushing out to buy one of those new jerseys with a player’s name on it: make sure the team has him under control for several more years and that he’s likely to be a good player for several more years. For example, wait to buy that Mauer jersey until he signs an extension. Don’t waste money on a Nathan or Hardy. Span is probably a safe bet, maybe Slowey.
I watch a lot of Brewers games, and the number of Sabathia jerseys in the stands is just sad.
On the other hand, I smile a little whenever I see someone in a Lew Ford.
