Gardenhire finishes 2nd; Washburn update

Posted on November 18th, 2009 – 1:25 PM
By Joe Christensen

(*) Twins manager Ron Gardenhire finished second to the Angels’ Mike Scioscia in AL Manager of the Year voting. Here’s how the voting went, according to the BBWAA web site:

Manager (1st-2nd-3rd-Points)
Mike Scioscia (15-10-1-106)
Ron Gardenhire (6-12-6-72)
Joe Girardi (4-3-5-34)
Ron Washington (1-1-11-19)
Jim Leyland (0-0-2-2)

(*) Also, FoxSports.com quotes free agent pitcher Jarrod Washburn as saying the Twins and Brewers are on his radar, with the Mariners in the mix, too.

This award has about as much credibility as a Nobel Prize or gold medal in ladies figure skating.

TK’s last 5 years:

‘97 68-94
‘98 70-92
‘99 63-97

Some coattails!

“gold medal in ladies figure skating”

“I don’t understand the figure skating ref. ????”

Were some of the previous ladies figure skating gold medal winners really cross-dressers?

Obviously none of the voters consulted with FV&G prior to voting.

I was hoping Ozzie G. would win for knowing when to throw in the towel.

Gardenhire is the Tara Lipinski of baseball.

MOY (and all awards) are voted on immediately after the season ends so the don’t take into account postseason success (or lack thereof).

No kidding Duane why dont the beat writers contact every MLB free agent to see if the Twins are on their radar.

That information is leaked to “placves like Fox sports”, because their readers can type and spell better than STRIB readers.

If gardy hadn’t played Punto every day he would have won this award.

Boneyard says:

November 18th, 2009 at 2:28 pm

Neither Washburn nor Pavano have #1 potential, which is why I hope the club goes after one of the Type B’s on the market with big upside or Sheets. Imo, even Duchscherer would be preferrable to Pavano or Washburn, and he’d probably even be cheaper. However, I don’t run the organization so my opinion counts for bubkis.

I think a bigger issue than Scioscia winning it over Gardenhire is the fact that Don Wakamatsu didn’t even get a vote. He took a 61-101 Mariners team and won 85 games this year. And he doesn’t even get a 3rd place vote? Come on…

sane says:

November 18th, 2009 at 2:42 pm

“Don Wakamatsu didn’t even get a vote. He took a 61-101 Mariners team and won 85 games this year.”

The East Coast Media are unaware of any team named the Mariners.

gobbledygookguy says:

November 18th, 2009 at 2:43 pm

Imo scioscia deserves the award just for getting his team thru the young pitching getting killed early in the season and maintaining a top quality team the entire season. gardy’s team played .500 for the first 130 games (at times looking real bad) and then made a run while they played some really crappy teams and the tigers were coughing up giant fur balls. The correct choice was made imo.

to correct an earlier post i always thought sane had a doctorate in bs-ing not in sh*t. wrong choice of words didn’t come out right.

Boneyard says:

November 18th, 2009 at 2:44 pm

Good point, Pete D. I think that illustrates why these awards really can be hard to give out.

November 20th is the date correct? that is when all the free agents can start signing with other teams I mean. think any of the Twins free agents may sign with them in the next 24 hours or so? I’m thinking Crede, Pavano or Cabrera especially…

jon says:

November 18th, 2009 at 2:53 pm

Being represented by Boras, I don’t think Crede would sign during the exclusive negotiating window. As for the other two you mentioned, Steve, maybe Pavano. Maybe.

I really don’t know if I’m related to Helen Keller or not, Duane (although I don’t think blindness and deafness are genetically passed on). I was adopted as an infant. For all I know, I could be related to you. Horrifying thought, isn’t it?

How did you come to that number?

Did you go week by week and see which team had the most wins in any particular 7 day stretch?

The baseball season IS 25 weeks long. At the end of those 25 weeks, Gardenhire’s squad had a better record than Leyland’s. How doesn’t his season rate higher?

Well, if you want to go by records, Gardenhire should have finished tied for fourth in MOY voting.

Detroit had injuries too, and Leyland had them alone at the top of the division most of the season. Minnesota hung around at or below .500 until mid September.

Clearly, Leyland and Gardenhire were judged by how their teams played the last few weeks, and after game 162, the Twins and Tigers were still tied.

Washburn Could help, but I’d really like the Twins to do something better. I like DeRosa for 3B, but as stated before, IF Crede’s healthy, he’ll put up better numbers than DeRosa, and he’ll be cheaper- plus a 1 year deal, and Valencia is still a hot/good prospect in the minors, so maybe we just need a 1 year stop gap…I hope anyway.

Any comments on Melvin Mora? He’s currently a free agent. Stats: He’s 37 and had a .260/.321/.358 line with 8 HR’s and 48 RBI last year. Not great. 2 years ago: 23 HR’s 104 RBI and a line of: .285/.342/.483 A lot better. Not saying sign him at any cost, he is 37, but he’s played in at least 125 games every year since 2004.So he’s durable.

Worth looking at? I don’t think it’s a terrible idea to consider him vs. our other options. Many players play reasonably well into their 40’s now, so don’t tell me it’s only age that scares you off. Hardy, like Mora, had a good year 2 years ago, and not last year, though he is a lot younger. Worth discussing anyway. Maybe could be had for 1-2 year deal.

Washburn…Ehh.

If the Twins are going to take a chance on a vet coming off surgury I’d rather see them make a run at Justin Deuchserer (sp). He has real up-side rather than a lefty who only really dominates when he pitches against the Twins.

AJ Pesh says:

November 19th, 2009 at 9:42 am

Hmmm….Pavano or Washburn….? Throw stats out. Throw injury history out. Who is the better clubhouse guy? That’s the most important thing. Twins baseball is good clubhouse guys first. Everything else (including winning), second.

mike wants wins says:

November 19th, 2009 at 9:42 am

The Twins were 5th in runs scored last year. They need to add more defense and pitching. I’d rather they see what they have internally for 3B, than spend more than a mill or so at this point (unless they can trade for a good/great young player).

I’d roll the dice on Sheets. If healthy, he’s the best pitcher available. Test him out, give him decent money with big incentives. Sign a 2nd tier guy.
