Straight Paint–Sand a Lot, Then Sand Some More

Saturday, February 23rd, 2008

The post below mentions some curious photo problems at a recent hot-rod-shop shoot. Here’s one that turned out. While the car is important–a rare Muntz Jet–it’s the reflection that matters here. See how clear the broom, lights, trash can and puddle are, and how straight? (The broom curves because the body side does.)

That’s what a high-quality paint job looks like and it comes from lots and lots and lots of block sanding–never with your fingers. After all the prep work that goes into the car before this stage, it’s easy to find yourself tired by this point. But the good shops sand on. As Stefan Gesterkamp, the pro who painted Jay Leno’s one-of-a-kind carbon fiber EcoJet show car, puts it: the devil’s in the detail. Yeah it is.

It’s all in the preparation. Good preparation takes a lot of really boring block sanding. That’s what makes a good paint job so expensive.

That’s a really nice job.

Man, I haven’t heard the name Muntz since I watched a Muntz TV at my buddy’s house waaaay back when I was a kid.

Kris, I am the president of Delta-Waseca, Inc., a medium duty truck body builder. We are proto-typing a retro-trailer [I can e-mail pictures if you give me an address] and would like some advice from you concerning features and marketing.
This trailer is designed to be pulled by a sedan, although it will fit a pick-up or an SUV just fine.
I haven’t found any other way to contact you. The StarTrib doesn’t know that you exist, so I’m trying this method. Thanks for your help, Bruce Bean

I hope I exist. We’ll all look a little silly blogging back and forth if I don’t–though it’ll get me out of some deadlines. :^)

Muntz, TV, huh Dave? I’d love to watch an episode of the Munsters on that!

Interesting the connections between appliance/home product makers and cars–Crosley, Nash-Kelvinator, Sears sold a Kaiser J knockoff. Here’s an article indicating China’s appliance makers are going to build cars:

Why not? They put refrigerators and TVs in vehicles; if you build the products, why not build the carriage?
