Spring, Day 2, Minneapolis, MN

Saturday, March 22nd, 2008

The problem with spring in Minnesota is that it’s just so nice, all that winter-long car planning goes right out the window.

All you want to do is grab the golf clubs or the bicycle and spend the day basking in glorious warmth and sunshine.

This is why car collectors flock here and why every buyer likes to see in any description of a classic that universal badge of rust-free condition, “Minnesota car.”

Sam Barnes asks, what cars, if any, use an aluminum V-8 with rear wheel drive these days? Many years ago years ago I built a three wheeled motorcycle with a 215 Olds V-8 in it. It has long since been sold and I would like to build another one with a little more modern engine. Sometimes a person can find a crashed car cheap and start building from there. Any ideas?

How about a Rover V8? They’re very light, structurally improved from the old 215–better webbing and cross-bolted, and lots of parts and options available because of their widespread use throughout the UK. Most of the 215 stuff will still bolt up to them, but you’ve got 5-speed transmissions options, fuel injection, various headers, etc.

The Rovers are plentiful and not too expensive comparatively speaking.
