Bumper Suggestion?

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

It’s certainly possible to custom make a bumper in steel and have it chromed. Sleuthing can be more fun though.

Anybody got any suggestions on a donor car for a BMW 507 bumper?  (See this post for the point of this query.)

The bumper from a first generation Mustang has some similarities, but looks like the corner is a little more rounded on the BMW.

I’d say that’s a pretty decent looking one in that photo right there, Kris. You’ll just need to find the right “parts procurement agent.”

That’s not uncompletely like a bumper from an early 50’s Ford sedan. At least it would give you a good starting point. The nerf bars would be a problem, though I do remember seeing something similar on Chevy’s of the period.

Need a bumper for your 07? Well you do it the way BMW did, make up a form, cut out the pieces to duplicate the shape, weld all the pieces together without any visible seams inside or out, have it massively plated in copper and nickel,if it comes up perfect, then you can have it plated, hoping it will fit to the car-a bit more complicated than you expected? Why do you think doctors are in training their entire lives? Sure like to meet the guy building a 507 body, yeah right. A 507 owner of 42 years says it is a fake.

Sure you can make one, like any part for any car. Fabrication is certainly fun, yet so is gumshoeing the wrecking yards and classic car literature to see if another manufacturer has made something nearly identical–all of the car makers have borrowed items from their own lines and others’ over the years.

Since there are so few 507s on the road–lucky you to have one–the nuances of their appointments are not widely known or recognized. Main thing for this project is that it be quite close and serve the car’s overall appearance.

Funny you mention doctors. My friend is a radiologist also trained as an engineer. His fascination with fine machinery plays a role in this fun project.

Thanks for your post. If you have a snap of your car, I bet lots of readers–including me–would enjoy seeing it. Kris
